Nokia Lumia 800 – light fantastic

Introducing the first Nokia smartphone in its new Lumia family

Published by Ian Delaney on October 26, 2011

LONDON, United Kingdom – Nokia today announces the Nokia Lumia 800, its first smartphone within the Lumia range running the Windows Phone operating system. This stunning new device combines a top-of-the-line feature set with a smooth single-piece body. The Nokia Lumia 800 offers the best Windows Phone experience to date, married with Nokia’s hardware know-how and software strengths.

Nokia Lumia 800

This is an amazing phone to hold in your hand. The polycarbonate body is all subtle curves topped with a bright AMOLED ClearBlack display with toughened glass stretching to the sides of the phone. The Back, Start and Search buttons on the front of the screen are set in the glass, so there are no interruptions to the smooth surface. The phone comes in three vivid colours: black, cyan and magenta. On the back, there’s an eight-megapixel auto-focus camera with Carl Zeiss optics. The camera also shoots HD video at 30 frames per second. Social sharing or online storage can happen automatically or with two taps on the interface.

Inside, there’s a 1.4GHz processor and graphics co-processor driving the operating system to deliver a silky-smooth user experience. There’s 16GB of internal user memory, with cloud computing integrated to offer 25GB of free SkyDrive storage for your music and pictures. Communications are handled by a quadband reception, up to HSDPA 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth. Talktime is rated at up to 13 hours, or standby for up to 335 hours. It measures 116.5 x 61.2 x 12.1mm and weighs 142g.

The Nokia Lumia 800 takes the best of Windows Phone and adds to it with Nokia enhancements including Nokia Drive, which offers free turn-by-turn navigation and a dedicated in-car interface. Nokia Drive turns the Nokia Lumia 800 into a fully-fledged personal navigation device. Nokia Music introduces MixRadio, bringing a free, global, mobile music-streaming service with hundreds of locally-relevant channels available.

Socialites will love the Nokia Lumia 800’s social creds, too. Every major network is covered, offering sleek integration through communications and contacts to deliver an unrivalled social experience. The browser, Internet Explorer 9, offers fast, smooth performance – as well as broad support for the latest standards such as HTML5 applications.

The Nokia Lumia 800 will be available from November in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK, across 31 operators. The estimated retail price is €420, before any local taxes or subsidies. Other territories including Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan will see the Nokia Lumia 800 before the end of the year, with even more markets following in early 2012.

        Hi Ian,

How does it’s compared to N9?

        • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

It seems very, very fast and personally, I really like the OS. They wouldn’t let me hold it long enough to answer your second question!

We expect to get more in-depth next week.

          • Cycnus

            great,

I’m looking forward for your article on how it’s compared to current Nokia’s of symbian/meego.

          • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

With all of them, I really recommend having a hands-on experience.

          • Cycnus

            Then, the next question is….
When nokia plan to release this in Indonesia :)

I’m very eager to try Nokia N9 and Nokia 800 side by side,

Totally second that! But seriously they should have included NFC in the 800. And a front facing camera! How can a flagship not have something like that?

      • Anonymous

Windows Phone isn’t exactly the front-runner in technology adoption. For one, it doesn’t support the NFC technology yet.

        • Anonymous

Microsoft has already stated that they fully back NFC in principle, ergo we can expect robust NFC support within the WP platform in the not too distant future. With the 800 however, if the chip itself doesn’t exist, the update isn’t going to do much good.

Nokia N9 looks exactly the same but is much better because has Meego inside.

    • http://twitter.com/trinnemaa Toni Rinnemaa

It’s more about UI style that fits perfectly to N9 curved screen. Yes there is things to improve about graphics design specially Menu needs some fixing there. But it’s getting there I hope.

Actually Nokia had better Menu design first but they changed it for some reason.

I see a very competitive price point. Same time makes me wonder why nokia set the price for the lower-spec’d n9 so high…

    • Anonymous

N9 isn’t exactly lower-spec’d – I think you’re concentrating too much on processor clock rate. It has a different type of processor, which is still faster in certain types of calculations (especially integer calculations).

The N9 has more RAM, a bigger display, a front facing camera, an NFC chip and better connectivity in pentaband 3G and a/b/g/n WLAN as opposed to quadband 3G and simply b/g/n WLAN in Lumia 800.

And last but not the least: N9′s got the Meego/Harmattan OS!

I can’t believe it! A Nokia device I like! It’s been such a long time.. bravo!

  • Vasilis

Not interested at all. And it was not very clever to make it the same as N9 externally. It enables us all see how much better MeeGo is.

  • Keke_

This is funny: Windows phone relase get me feel that N9 is very overprized, BUT i still pay rather 600€ to get N9 than 420€ to get WP n9..

    • Anonymous

I totally agree, I would also pay more and choose the N9 any day over L800.

    • http://twitter.com/trinnemaa Toni Rinnemaa

That does not even need any thinking. =)

Well only if you need phone for your xbox and office. Then 800 might be better choice.

  • Pasha811

Nokia has done a good work here. Even if I was and I am still skeptical on the Windows OS route I have to admit the 800 looks gorgeous and the hardware is so well crafted that even Windows Phone 7.5 plays it’s role. At that price point both phones have to be considered. The world is not going Apple vs Google again. Good luck Nokia! …. but the white N9…. stunning beauty.

  • Cod3rror

Nokia was singing their gaga songs about NFC in their symbian^3 devices….where is nfc support in new wp7 phones? and btw only fools would make transition from dead symbian os which has true multi-tasking and combustibility to about to be dead wp7 platform which doesnt have true multitasking, customization and other freedoms!

    • Cycnus

Having a step dad (elop) making a line between reality and imagination blurred.

In case of nokia, nokia can’t decide which the high end (symbian) and which the mid end (wp7), and got mixed up.

  • Diego Goding

Great Job Nokia! I’m looking forward to the US Lunch!

    From Wiki

”Lumia as conceived, was a self contained and silent art, not to be combined with music or dance.”

Dont mix Music with Lumia.. Keep it silent….

  • Marty

So the nokia n800 is only available through a carrier? Maps is not preloaded on the phone so you have to pay for data when you use navigation etc? Can you use the phone through at least 24 hours on one charge? Or is everything that you taught us is suddenly not true anymore?

  • Anonymous

Nokia (w/MS) did a fantastic job getting the Lumia 800 out in such a short period.  It’s a beautiful design with competitive specs at the stated price point.  However, Nokia really needs to launch a true flagship NLT 1Q2012.  Something  with a large HD CBD screen, 1080p/30fps video, a camera at least as good as on the N8 (to include Xenon…+ 1 LED?), NFC, dual core or better, with copious amounts a RAM and on board/expandable storage.  Nokia’s flagship needs to reset the discussion of tech leader away from Apple and Samsung.  The Lumia 800 does not do this.

    • Cycnus

      agree…

with android devices now starting to go with HD resolution and dual core, and soon quad core, nokia need MS Apolo fast

  • Anonymous

Nice physical design. Apart from that another run of the mill WP phone…

    I think i should buy a second N8 as backup, because i cant see a successor  :-(

Nokia Lumia will be the biggest flop ever !

      • Anonymous

No, the N97 was the biggest flop ever. I will be surprised if this fails. Lets wait and see rather than slag it off when it’s not yet in the shops. It’s like slating a movie when you’ve only seen the trailer.

        • http://aani.nokia.fi Heidi

Agree on the waiting and seeing bit! You really have to experience this baby first hand to understand what it’s all about. I am confident people will be impressed when they try it out – we in Conversations all all excited about it!

          • Anonymous

Impressed? It has nothing, no FM-transmitter, no HDMI, no MicroSD, no SwipeUI, small storage and no front facing camera.. how could get excited over that? Yeah I know, the Drive app.. really differentiating…

          • Anonymous

Yeah, ok, it may be missing a few bits but they are hardly touting it as the new N8 are they. I think they did well getting a WP phone out in 6 months. Give them another 6 months and let’s see what they can do now that the immediate pressure to produce something has eased. You can still buy an N8 if you want all those things, or wait for them to come out with something really special which will surprise and impress.

Nothing can beat N97 as biggest flop ever done. N97 made serious damage to Nokia brand that they still trying to fix.

Elop might done some bad mistakes how to introduce new strategy . But we are talking about device flops here =)

MeeGo with the full support of Nokia would have died the same way WebOS and RIM’s QNX has. You’re fooling yourself if you think other wise.

Serious Nokia conversations, when will you get rid of all these trolls?

Its been 6 months and every time I come here its the same old bunch of silly fool trolling. Get rid of Disqus, require some sort of Facebook or Google+ profile so we can put a face on all these fools.

    • Cycnus

If nokia take your consideration, then it would be a farewell to nokia for lot of us (nokia long timer), and it’s easier to retain current customer / loyal customer rather than getting a new one.

      And, btw,
unlike some other brand, nokia is open minded
to you, we’re troll, but if nokia smart, nokia can learn from our whining, and know how to develop their product/advertisement.

You sir are a troll not a customer. Normal people don’t spend all their time roaming from site to site trolling like you do.

        • Cycnus

          I used to have Nokia 3650, 6600, N70, E61i, N81, C3-00
I still have (still using it) E7 (silver) and N8 (orange).
not to mention a couple of nokia CDMA (last 2 type were 6265, 6275i)

I’m also the guy who were asked about when my family (mom, dad, wife) wanna buy new phone, and so far, I’ve recomended a total around 40 nokia for my family.

I’m a nokia customer, THE REAL nokia customer

Thanks both for your feedback! We’ve considered introducing Facebook sign in, but I guess the main concern there is what it would do to transparency. We’d appreciate hearing more of your thoughts here, so please let us know what you think. Would Facebook/Google/Disqus sign in be a good thing, or would it put you off?

        • incognito

There are people, like me, who don’t have a FB account and don’t want to be forced to create one. Yeah, I know, we’re bunch of weirdos, but we do exist…

        • Cycnus

          I use google & disqus
          but not facebook.

As long as it would be optional, it would be a great addition :)

Currently available options for posting comments are sufficient and of course any company should not ban their customers for posting negative comments on their blogs or sites because in reality actually these negative comments are in fact the real feedback about products

          • Anonymous

The real feedback? Do you truly belive that your constant crying about not having Anna in the US and the fact that Elop decided to go for WP7 mean you are listened to? Nice hardware – the software fails to impress. Before anyone tells me I don’t know what I’m talking about, I own an HTC HD7. I’ve used it as my primary phone. I even attended one of MS’s “phone camps” at Nokia here on Silicon Valley.

I get what MS is aiming for with their Metro design concept and panorama-style apps.

But I also own an N9. A far more powerful h/w and s/w combination. Yet, simple and elegant to use. The software could use some work.

But you were busy – making nice hardware.

Such a nice looking phone ruined by the fact it runs Windows Mobile.

Pun Android on it and you may just save Nokia. Elop needs to go! Meego would have been a better choice, anything but Windows Mobile.

Does the Lumia 800 have a front facing camera? What Bluetooth profiles
are supported? When will it be available in the US markets?

  • Helmuth

THIS is the announcement? The N9 has similar design, better hardware and a superior OS with all features I wan’t on a mobile device.

But I wan’t to buy it here at GERMANY with service network in case something is broken. NOKIA, WAKE UP! I have 1000€ here. Where is my N9 64GB?!

Nokia not have warranty for whole EU that it does not matter what country you buy it ?

Maybe that White N9 64GB will come to countries that did not get it at first time.

    • Esa1996

“The N9 has similar design, better hardware and a superior OS…” Except the N9 doesn’t have better hardware. It has twice the amount of RAM, but the processor of the Lumia 800 is 400 mhz faster (1.4 ghz), so the hardware is pretty equal (I value processor speed more than RAM). Also “…superior OS…” is a matter of taste. The only thing you can compare two UI’s is speed and the online store, in which WP7 sweeps the floor with Meego (Don’t get me wrong I’ve tried Meego, and liked it, but I also like WP7, and though I’d make a few points against your comment)

N9 and Meego is my choice. I have tried WF os and …sorry Nokia, I will go for Meego.

You are letting us down! It has nothing, no FM-transmitter, no HDMI, no MicroSD, no SwipeUI, small storage and no front facing camera.. how could get I excited over that? Yeah I know, the Drive app.. really differentiating…

Please make another Harmattan phone. You are all talking about UX, well it’s better on the N9 because Harmattan was made for that design.

WindowsP looks ugly on it. It suits the L710 more.

Can’t wait to learn a new proprietary programming language and IDE so I can code stuff for this baby.

I mean, seriously, who needs cross-platform, open-source toolkits when I could be painstakingly porting everything I’ve made in order to cater to a single OS instead of just implementing a new UI designed for the platform without touching the underlying code like I could do with Qt?

Indeed, it’s great they didn’t bother porting Qt for Windows Phone 7, although it’s already compatible with Windows CE which WP7 is based on.

Moreover, after you learn new language and IDE, you have to pay money to microsoft before install your first Helloworld test app on your own AMAZING SHINY NokiaWinPhone. Isn’t it wonderful? Bravo Elop!

Did Nokia name this after the finnish proverb “Menneen talven Lumia”.

It means literally “Snow of the past winter”, but it is used to describe useless things that have become irrelevant (like old snow). Since Nokia is finnish, I assume that it is the case and and congratulate Nokia for finding such a perfect name for a Microsoft product.

My first feeling is/was disappointment when I saw the new phones.
Drive, MixRadio and ESPN are very thin USPs over other WP7 phones, and 16GB is too little (for my usage).

Additionally I feel so sorry and somewhat angry for Nokia because my hesitations of going WP7 seemed to prove right since the company would be capable of doing so much more and so much greater products (N9: great HW _AND_ great SW) but is doomed to go a different path (towards OEM).

As I’ve said before here at Nokia Conversations, differentiation is key and with the N9 Nokia would have had the right product to be different from the rest but turned towards being another WP7 OEM headed by a strange-acting CEO (sorry to be so harsh).

I still don’t see the strategy working out of outsourcing the key USP of a smartphone (the OS and its apps-comunity) to a 3rd party US based company when the greatest European SW know-how is just around the corner (within Nokia).

I hope the market proves me wrong and I sincerely wish the best for Nokia.

    • Anonymous

Exactly my thoughts. Nokia has extensive knowledge in mobile OS development. They are capable of having relatively low-end hardware run OS like a breeze (e.g. 6630, E71, etc).

Now, Elop chose to ditch that in favor of Win Phone losing any chance of proper differentiation. Maps, Radio, Sports?! Come on! These aren’t hard to imitate at all! and the only reason left to buy a Nokia is hardware quality which is also not that difficult to imitate given the short life-cycle of mobiles.

When I think about the current market I feel sorry for what it’s heading towards. 3 mainstream OS. One exclusive (iOS) and 2 shared by all other OEM giving iOS a huge differentiation advantage. If you want an Android phone or a Win Phone, you have a sea of identical choices with different brands. Yes Android gives OEM room for differentiation but when was the last time you’ve seen one really different Android?

I have only owned Nokia phones ever and the N9 seems to be my last one (if it doesn’t run out of stock before Christmas that is).

Is it just a coincidence? In the name Nokia Lumia if I replace “L” for “N” and “u” for “9″ and remove the three last letters I get Nokia N9!?

Why do you say it takes the best of WP when it is lacking features that other WP handsets already have – bigger screen, front camera, etc. ? It is NOT a top-of-the-line feature set, so stop lying to your potential customers ! Do I have to mention features already present in current Nokia, never mind Android, handsets which are missing from this so called “top of the line” handset which clearly does NOT offer the best WP experience to date !

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

I really think you should hold it and competing phones in your hand before making a judgement. The industrial design is exemplary – absolutely best in class.

If the presence or absence of a front camera guides your decisions, then so be it. Everyone has their own priorities. For me, though, it’s an extremely niche feature.

      • incognito

Yes, but apparently there are a lot of niche users that are raving about the lack of FFC. You could’ve shut them up by including a FFC – I don’t think it would increase the price all that much – this way you’re giving them something to rant about.

Now, I’m quite sure that there were technical challenges to shoehorn Qualcomm’s SoC and add those mandatory buttons to the N9′s body, and that it is the reason for omitting the FFC, but surely there must have been a way.

While I will hardly jump to the WP7 bandwagon (and not because of Nokia, I just don’t like the UI and I hate restrictiveness, not to mention development options), there were plenty of WP7 fans who expected Nokia to dazzle them with their take on the WP7 story and they got disappointed because of what might seem a niche feature, but in this day and age it is a glaring omission. After all, almost every smartphone from Nokia in past 5 years or so had a FFC, why break the tradition?

As a Maemo fan, developer and (F)OSS affectionado, I don’t think that the WP7 is an answer to Nokia’s problems, and I do think it will ultimately fail, but if you’re going that way you should try harder and make no compromises. I want Maemo to kick WP7 on fair grounds, as that’s how you show ingenuity and quality – I don’t want Maemo to be successful strategy just because Nokia didn’t try hard enough on the WP7 front. So, give the WP7 fans what they want, and let us ‘fight’ on the same grounds.

There are some articles showing how someone who have phones with screen smaller than 4.X” manage to touch and interact with all screen, while those “luckily” ones who have 4.x” phones can’t handle without using two hands. Think twice befere criticize without arguments, just based on “I think”.

Big Eflop fail on the lumia 800.

Scrapping Symbian and MeeGo, for WP7 that does not sell anything (even with Samsung HTC and LG). And Nokia comes with a phone that has lower specifications than the newly announced samsung omnia W with WP7, how does Nokia expect to sell anything of this phone ?

Great design – just like N9 phone. But this is not going to shatter the sales records. No NFC, No front Cam, No card slot. There has to be at least one worthwhile new feature- there is none. What happened to Microsoft’s promise of voice controlled commands (Even mimicking Siri with maybe an avatar instead of just voice would have helped). I think Nokia should continue to make Qt/ Meego/S40 phones. Relying just on windows is too dangerous for Nokia’s future.

      1. NFC support by end of Year for windows Phone

      2. No Front Cam was a Nokia call…. Other Windows Phone OEM’s have Front cam’s for mango. (HTC)

      3. Yes no card slot but that has been said from the start.

Apple is compared to the ‘walled garden’.

Google is compared to the ‘open field’.

I think Microsoft is taking the middle of the road approach.

Closed source, but different hardware OEM partners.

Naturally, Microsoft would want to make use of the platform to promote its other products. I think if you want WP7, you’ll have to use IE9. There is no alternative, nope, not even Opera Mobile.

Somehow, in all of the 35K+ of apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace, there is not a single browser replacement for IE. Nor do I think there’ll ever be,

  • Aityusha

Nokia N9 body + touch buttons (smaller display screen) + Qualcomm chip + WP 7.5 = Nokia Lumia 800.

    In other words:

    1) No compelling reason for Symbian/Meego loyalists (especially those who got the N9) to get it.

    2) No unique selling point that will make someone choose a Nokia WP7 phone over WP7 offerings from Samsung and HTC.

    3) No killer features that will make Android/iOS users want to switch. No, the Metro UI, while certainly unique, is not a ‘killer feature’.

Considering that the Lumia 800 is the first virgin Windows phone, the fruit of a major shift in corporate direction, the effort seemed somewhat underwhelming, and dare I say it, rushed just for the holiday sales.

We shall see how the third ecosystem develops. Good luck.

Nevertheless, I think it is mediocre smart phone! From colors, body work to impersonal user interface.
For that reason and from my experience with Microsoft (whose I am user 30 years) it will fail because in phone there is no place for clumsy software and Microsoft is producer of that kind of software not to mention the hardware (bad “hi tech” mice which stop scrolling after 6 month etc).
So this silly Windows phones are short breath devices! Can you imagine Windows in your car with lot of “fatal errors and wowarnings massages?
It is a pity for Nokia!

Tjis wp7 mango is total crap…you cant use lumia 800 or 710 as wifi hotspot neither you can use them as modem on pc to access phone’s mobile internet on pc and also wp7 doesn’t have mass storage mode that means if you want to transfer songs or videos or any data from some one’s pc then you will need to install Zune software in that pc…haha….and btw newly release Nokia asha 303 supports both usb mass storage and also usb on the go features and you can use it as modem as well…..wp7 is still on its baby steps LOL

I dont think it is crap, It may not be aimed at you and I. My companys mobile phones are all Iphones. Non of the users have heard of USB on the go or know what tethering is. I have a relative who has an HTC desire since last Jan. he never knew he had quick office on it or what it was for .I have a driver who has a Blackberry and he does not know how to back it up or what the usb cable is for. The Loomy 800 ads seem to be aimed at Facebook and twitter users and not smartphone nuts like me. I think it is an object of desire but it is not for me. I wont be giving up my N8 yet for a WP they have a long way to go.

“This stunning new device combines a top-of-the-line feature set with a smooth single-piece body.”

Weird. All the non-Nokia reviews talk about N9 as a clearly superior device compared to Lumia. It must be really hard to make such marketing flip-flops.

This is such a beautiful Hardware, so sad it is only running Windows Phone. I would prefer to buy a real Smartphone, not such a simple Series40 like dumbphone with Zune. :-(

    • http://twitter.com/modysd Ahmed

S40 is better because it can download songs and applications from internet !!

If Windows phones were more like Symbian ones with Memory card slots ,usb ports an so easy to use Nokia Suite instead of Zune to transfer Music to phones it might have been better, all Nokia are doing is copying Apple an i bet soon there will court trouble again between Nokia an Apple using certain items on Windows phones that Apple created,to Overpriced the Lumia 800 so people will keep hold of there N8s or switch to a alternative phone instead,£400 to Over Valued again by Nokia

Zune is a nice piece of software, Loubie. I prefer it to Media Centre on Windows. A special plus is wireless synchronization of photos and playlists.

Don’t think there’s going to be any case filed between Nokia and Apple over WP7 because of the cross-licensing agreement between Microsoft’s WP and Apple’s iOS.

So the phone is beautiful, we all know :). What I don’t know for sure is:
    Is
the Nokia Lumia 800 hardware-wise able to tether it’s internet
connection to a laptop via WiFi (or USB if it has to)? I have seen it’s
not in the settings menu by default, but are the necessities there?

The phone is really pretty, I wish this phones get less expensive, and about the software I have been using one htc Mozart (3.7 super LCD display) since February and it never get’s boring for me like it happened after 6 months using my htc Desire with android 2.1. where I ended up making monthly updates with cooked roms from XDA, it’s fun but burns fast.

I am really excited the Lumia 800 coming to India. . and i want to be one of the first to get my hands on device upfront. But what really makes me sad, is that this amazing device gives its competitors a slight edge over this Device. . with no front facing cam, it really breaks the heart of many, including mine, why Nokia decided not to include this feature. I really hope when this device hits India, at least the price will be more competitive. I love Nokia, but I wish that they would jump right into the Ocean, instead of taking it step by step. It’s about time Nokia put all the competition behind them. I’d like to get a reply from a Nokia head.

The design is great – I hope you’ll not abandon this unibody construction in future phones. My concern though is you’ll be limited to some degree by Windows Phone but I wish you good luck. I like Nokia, you have great ideas, and hope you’ll regain the user base shortly.

Presently, I’m using Android 2.3.6 (Samsung) but can’t wait to get my hands on the Lumia 800 with WP7.5! Unfortunately, Nokia has not announced as yet when the phone is coming to the Philippines!

There is one great issue with this phone among many others. The back of the phone with steel that has Nokia printed on it, gets scratched easily after the use. I hope Nokia uses some kind of coating or redesign that part. The steel portion looks great but not great on the expense of having scratched steel. Something should be done in the future version of lumia 800.

I belived in Lumia 800, my problem no solved since 2 month –> Zune connection with windows 7 (it seems Microsoft is sleeping)..this is critical point.. and the fast discherged battery… The navigation sotfware “with car” has similar capability as a low end PNA.. (highway off etc.)
