Nokia N9 gets a new colour and a software update

The white N9 and software update

LONDON, United Kingdom – Nokia is happy to announce a new addition to the Nokia N9 family with the arrival of the white version of the highly acclaimed device. Current Nokia N9 users will also be pleased to hear that they will soon be getting a software update for their phone.

White devices are all the rave at the moment. So why was the Nokia N9 not available in white from the start? Frank Zillikens, who heads up the product marketing for Nokia N9, explains: “The manufacturing process for beautiful white products is quite complex and we wanted to make sure we deliver the best possible quality for our consumers.”

The white Nokia N9 sports a glossy finish, so it looks slightly different from its matte sisters in black, magenta and cyan. It will be available during the fourth quarter of 2011, starting with the 64GB version.

The other Nokia N9 news today is the software update, which people will be able to download during the fourth quarter of 2011. The update includes usability improvements, like music controls keys from the lock screen or closing apps by swiping them down by default and NFC tag reading is also added.

    You really think? I like both. I find myself rooting for Meego, because it’s such a shame it didn’t get chance to shine, but WP brings so much more – apps and services that’re light years ahead of Meego. I also think it looks different enough to capture attention. Meego looks a lot like Android app menus/iPhone homescreen. At least WP7 looks different.

      “Meego looks a lot like Android[...]” – Definitely a no no, especially when you consider the fluidity and simplicity of Swipe. I can even sacrifice those services on WP7 just to experience the awesomeness of Nokia N9 with MeeGo.
      
      I’m sure Nokia and other devs can catch up and make these unavailable apps in MeeGo. It is just sad that Nokia (Elop) abandoned the Nokia N9 and MeeGo without giving it a chance to shine.And too bad for Nokia 800 because it just didn’t get the boom that Nokia N9 had when it was unveiled many months ago.

        Oh, I didn’t mean all of Meego looks like Android – just the app lists… they look a lot like Android app menus. And that’s the publicity shot I see used all the time for the N9.

      It’s one thing being different, and completely another being better. Most things in Windows Phone which are different fall flat on their face on the latter aspect.
      
      The grid-less app drawer, for one, always results in much scrolling. If you pin apps to the home screen, the large tiles also result in much scrolling: there’s no way around it. iPhone popularity has pretty much proven that UI elements of certain size are more than enough for general public, that’s why you see them on Android, and that’s why they are also used in Meego.
      
      What about animating things for animation’s sake? I hate it. It’s like an annoying child constantly begging for attention for no reason. Imagine your desktop icons rolling around and blinking and moving around—just because they could.

  you could always get it from expansys? Im not sure about the UK but here in Canada we have shops that sell unlocked devices and offer them @ contract pricing if you sign up to a plan (even though its not officially offered by the provider)

    Knowing expansys they’ll never get any stock – they’re always the first to put a just announced device up for pre-order, and the last to actually sell it (and then at an inflated price).

This is the one I’ve been craving from the start, yessss!!! My husband has been developing N9 with many others and this was the first version of N9 that I saw. It looks real classy and elegant and has that awesomeness about it that makes you want to have it, no matter what the cost. Great work, Nokia!

  yes its all white poly they have mixed in the colors when the made the cover so if u buy a blue, red , black or white the colors are “inside” the plastic so if u get a scratch on the surface or rather deep it wont be so visible for the eye…. sorry for my poor english

to be released in every country! Nokia and Elop are being very unfair
to N9 and the hardwork/innovation that was put in by so many people!

So I have alot of questions about the colour.
First and most importantly: is the white colour inherent? So is it coloured troughout?

If it stratches will it still be white?
Why’d you make it glossy and not matte? (I know there’s non-glossy white N9 prototypes)

I’m in Canada, and found a way to get the 16GB black version for C$700 (including 13% sales tax, making it about C$620 before tax, which seems VERY cheap compared to other places, even here many other places wanted C$740 or even C$800, and it was DKK4400+ in Denmark which is over C$800, I also didn’t pay shipping as it was a local store). I had planned on buying the cyan colour, but after seeing it in person, the colour was right, but wasn’t fond of the finish, while it looked high quality, it also looked like a toy, so I went with the black, and the silicone case they gave me for free is very thin, but fits great. I’m very impressed by MeeGo coming from an N97mini (and only Nokia’s before that), although I get performance issues at about 6 or 7 open apps, but I’m used to closing apps anyways so this isn’t a problem for me to keep apps closed, and even so, if I have 7+ apps open and playing a game or video, the live app doesn’t have performance issues.
I’m looking forward to the software update.
Nokia, please reconsider not continuing with MeeGo, be like Samsung or HTC and provide multiple OSes. I wanted MeeGo and sought it out. My friends with ‘droids, BB’s, and fruity phones are quite impressed by the simplicity and performance, and it’s deceptivly light and thin (it’s not that thin but it sure looks thin, and is very comparable to Samsung Galaxy and Nesus S phones). I love showing off the phone. It’s nice to have the best phone at the table again!!! (when I had my N95 I could say that, not since)
With the right marketing and app support, MeeGo could easily compete with Android and Iphone in North America, those platforms are a successes because of marketing, not product.

Keep up the great work with MeeGo!

  It is clear that NOKIA is headed by Microsoft, N8 is what people want, but they try to focus us on WP7. What phone manufacturer would do that, in the end the N9 is a NOKIA product, too. So, they should give it the same attention like WP7!! But this is not what Microsoft wants.

I bought my N9 about 3 weeks ago and every time I use it I enjoy it more. I have an E7 and an iPhone that I’ve stopped using since buying the N9. Its hard to explain, but after using the N9 you reject the old looks and OS of other phones. I like my E7 but now it’s not the same. The N9 is totally new and I love everything about it. I have the black from expansys USA and will buy the white in time as these are imports from EU. The white will be for family just so I can see it and touch it. They are fantastic.

the biggest bummer is that the led flash cannot be used during video recording..i bought it… :(
now tell me its not a xenon its a dual led flash but i cant use it…whats the deal nokia?
luckily enough ive found a led flashlight app that i run in the background then i open camera to shoot videos and it helps..otherwise the n9 videos rec is a letdown by not allowing the led light….
and sometimes the still camera doesnt focus on objects itself..not even when i touch to focus… :/ quite slow…
anybody got same issues????
comments???one more thing..no skype video calls(whats the front camera for?)no swype preinstalled… some prototype videos showed that it had it..no portrait alphanumeric keypad although nokia product info shows that it has(but its only in the phone dialer app..where alphabets are not even needed much..) can anyone shed some light on both issues?

Question for Ian: Is the white on this a coating? So if scratched would it expose the next layer? Or is it like the B C M models where the material is entirely the same colour?

      It was mentioned in a developer dot nokia dot com blog post.
      I can’t find it now….
      But the dev seemed confident it’d be rolled out in roughly that time-frame.

  They simply want to force the 800 & 710 WP’s down their throats.
  
  To answer your Qn, look into importing it from a neighbouring country.
  Read their Nokia site & you should be able to tell by reading it, whether it’s come or coming.

  But unfortunately I don’t think that’s what’s happening in reality.
  
  There’s a massive advertising blitz in the UK for the Lumia 800/710.
  Plus they’re both available on very aggressively priced telco contracts.
  
  The N9 will “finally”/gradually become more accessible in the UK.
  But supply will never be loosened enough for prices to become optimally competitive.
  And Nokia will never allow it to be buy-able via a telco contract.
  
  Such a sad state of affairs…

  It’s clear that they’re deliberately limiting distribution…
  Many EU countries will be lucky, & some countries outside the EU.
  But most countries that got the other colors, won’t be getting it. :-(
