Microsoft evangelist talks Nokia Lumia 800 and Windows Phone (video)

Published by Mike Cooper on October 27, 2011

Ben Rudolph is from Microsoft and he runs their evangelism program. He’s super passionate about Windows Phone and Microsoft’s partnership with Nokia, but not in a happy-clappy way. He’s an expert with great insight into the benefits of the partnership and what it really means for people using Nokia devices with Windows Phone. Hit play to see what he had to say at Nokia World 2011.

“intuitive”, “different”, “smarter”, “looks great”, “feels great” – that’s exactly about NOKIA N9 and MeeGo inside.

  • Cycnus

    agree.

N9 is great, looks different, fresh, intuitive.
WP7 phone… first things i got in mind is boring, ugly, intimidating, irritating

especially the life tiles, my eyes were hurt by the constant change of tiles…. it make me can’t focus well.

I DO feel the same! I think that WP7 will make me (actualy not, cause I will never buy one) feel tired after an hour of blink-blink tiles.

  • MobileStrongBOX

Too much touches to call a contact!! With Symbian I can call directly from the contact list!!

Thanks for nokia marketing for name “Lumia”  PERFECTO !

“Microsoft evangelist talks Nokia Lumia 800 and Windows Phone” – The title is a shade misleading. He mentioned the name of the phones – and didn’t mention Nokia again for the entire video.

This is the partnership you’ve chosen. Something to remember.

I really hope Nokia satisfied with their Nokia 710 & Nokia 800. As a nokia fan, I’m gonna give nokia a chance, I’m gonna try it in store, for maybe 1 hour or 2.

But, even before trying it, I don’t think I’m gonna buy it. I already try the other WP7 phone, and the only differentiation that nokia 800 & 710 have compared to other brand is the camera. Nothing really new. Same OS, Same CPU, I don’t think nokia can really make a differentiation.

I guess I’m gonna buy the cyan 64GB Nokia N9 to replace my N8. and maybe in 2012 I’m gonna buy Sony Ericsson ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) Android with HD resolution to replace my E7…. Unless nokia would introduce another Symbian^3 devices with 1.4GHz CPU (same as Nokia’s WP7 device) & autofocus carl zeis optic…. to lure me to stay with Nokia symbian (rather than go to android).

I agree. Metro is a nice UI but it’s start screen is way too restless and it has way too much stuff going on. Multi-tasking in Windows Phone 7 also is pretty stupid. Why it doesn’t scroll vertically? That is just a obvious design flaw. Meego variant in N9 does that same thing much better.

I think Nokia UI team did generally better job with their Meego “Harmattan” in N9 than what Microsoft has done with Windows Phone 7.5.

I would buy unsupported N9 rather than Lumia 800 if I already didn’t have an Android phone I am still stuck with at least 1 year from now on.

Only interesting feature in WP7 is the Zune integration but that is probably going to be huge let down since Microsoft doesn’t support Zune properly anywhere outside United States. Which is the actual reason it died.

I wish I could go back to the days of my Nokia N95 8gb with Nokia PC Suite. Does anyone else miss those days? (or whichever model you had combined with PC Suite.)

Why do you think Android Ice Cream Sandwich is moving closer to Windows Phone Metro design? The row of icons that MeeGo, iOS and Android use is archaic. Time to break this paradigm from the 80′s.

A row of static, dead icons is better than live tiles that actually convey information? Okay, we’ll have to disagree on that.

How about widget…. just like in symbian and android.

widget is better than annoying tiles.

  • Anonymous

Tiles are designed not to kill your battery life and take up resources.. can’t say the same for android widgets. The home screen shows about 8 tiles with your personal, real-time information. That’s valuable to me and not “annoying” at all.

I never said anything about battery life. :)

anyway @Truthhz:disqus , I really hope you will enjoy Nokia 800. and good luck with it :)

  • Cycnus

Well @Truthhz:disqus I really hope you will enjoy your Nokia 800. I will try it soon, and really hope I would like it too.

But that was just me trying to justify what nokia did, because deep down in my heart, I try other brand WP7 devices, and I really dislike it. You can call me old fashion, I still in love with my Meego and symbian. And the closest things to meego and symbian were only android.

Please @cycnus:disqus , I think we can both agree that Microsoft views Nokia with far greater respect than their other OEM partners.

Pretty much for the first time the Windows Phone platform is actually getting any press and a serious advertising campaign. Its going to be Nokia that gets this new OS onto the radar of the average consumer.
Microsoft cannot and will not ignore that.

As for differentiation, Elop was pretty clear that we now have a ‘war of ecosystems’ and not ‘a battle of devices’. That’s why Nokia is adding their proprietary Drive app, a music app that syncs with their backend, and Ovi maps with pulse (their own foursquare-esque service) all linked together with a Nokia account.

Its why hard specs don’t matter too much anymore. People want a solid experience. Apple gets that. The original iPhone was laughable from the spec point of view and yet it sold phenomenally.

Now with Microsoft doing the hard work of integrating Windows, Windows Phone, Xbox and the cloud, Nokia can reap the huge benefits of a unified experience and UI that every Windows Phone will enjoy once the new Dash and Windows 8 ships + they have their own services that will ensure brand loyalty and true differentiation.

I’m pretty sure that you’re a Nokia fan, and I honestly think that you should be really excited because finally Nokia ‘gets it’.

    Sincerely,
    A long time Nokia fan.

PS. The 800 and 710 really should have NFC though.

  • Cycnus

    Well,

    First of all,
Nokia dumping their OS for WP7, nokia dumping their entire ecosystem, which is have A LOT MORE user than WP7. Nokia deserve better than a footnote from Microsoft, Nokia deserve their name in the OS, it should be Microsoft-Nokia WP7, not Microsoft WP7. Just like the Nokia-Intel Meego, not Intel Meego.

    Second,
On iPhone. Steve were not a Consumer Electronic Salesman. If you had read his background now, you should know that at first he was trying to be a spiritual leader but than change his mind when he got to India (Ashram). He got what a talent of what a spiritual leader had, he know how to manipulate his (stupid) follower. Even Jonathan Ivy, said that he used to steal his idea, and there’s nothing he can do about it. He just silent and avoid being fired. So, don’t you think that microsoft can replicate the User Experience of Steve spiritual leader ability of manipulating people…. Microsoft doesn’t have this kind of ability. Or in Steve Jobs word, I rephrase…. “Microsoft were building third grade product, Bill gates really need to go to ashram in his early life to be able to build good product”.

    Third,
As the other part of “Battle of ecosystem”. First of all, I use LINUX… I use UBUNTU LINUX. I love ubuntu, because it’s more virus free compared to microsoft product. I’m not the only linux user around me. There were more and more CORPORATE in INDONESIA change their OS to Linux because the TCO of Linux is a lot lower…. And when Nokia switch their OS to Microsoft, and talk about battle of ecosystem means using WP7 Nokia might be forcing us to change desktop OS, in which a no-no.

    Fourth,
As iOS and WP7 were more like ?beautiful? closed garden, and meego/symbian and android were open field, user of symbian would feel android is the successor of symbian rather than WP7. To tell the truth, I’m a Nokia addict, but I have Android Tablet. I have samsung tablet. and I feel 80% at home (the only missing to me is the nokia look and feel).  I also tried iPad before I bought the android tablet, and I don’t like it, just about the same when I tried HTC/Samsung WP7 product. I don’t like it. And yes, Nokia 800 & 710 should have NFC, in fact it should also have HD resolution, FFC, removable memory, Nokia own store (or rename to Microsoft-Nokia Store), mass storage USB mode, and many more.

    Fifth,
The term Battle of Ecosystem only suitable if Nokia own the OS, otherwise nokia would be the OEM of battle of stupidnes.

    Sincerely,

    A confused Nokia fans/addict.

    First,
Microsoft develops the OS, not Nokia. Therefore it should be Microsoft WP7.

    Second,
Why are you getting Jobs into this? Did the iPhone sell well? Yes. Did it have all the bells and whistles of the time? No. Is iOS still popular? Yes.Enough said.

    Third,
You may use Linux and so does roughly 1% of all desktop and laptops out there. The remaining 99% use OSX and moreover Windows. I think its fair to say that Nokia is targetting the mainstream.

    Fourth,
Just imagine the exact same case once Windows 8 ARM tablets ship with the same Metro UI. People will be completely at home with a Nokia after that. That would position Nokia nicely to take the US market as well where they struggle.

    Fifth,
I did mention that core services like Mapping and Media will be handled directly by Nokia. That makes it their ecosystem.

    Sixth,
I don’t really won’t to get into a pointless fight when both of us just want the best for Nokia.
    Peace.

The success of iphone is directly correlated into Steve Jobs ability to bend reality. Thus I believe my point were valid.

I also don’t want to fight with you. We were on the same side. :) If you see all the rant here, especially on nokia big day, that Nokia N9 white color got more hits than the Nokia 710 / Nokia 800 news. and also, most comment on Nokia 710/800 were negative, it doesn’t seems good for elop/nokia.

BTW, I fell nokia could do better with symbian/meego rather than WP7. Well, time will tell. At least, I’m gonna get the Nokia N9. and maybe it would be my last nokia :( .

    Peace too :)
