Nokia introduces Nokia Pulse beta: the new way to check-in

Published by Pino Bonetti on October 27, 2011

LONDON, United Kingdom – Where you are matters. A lot. It naturally matters to you. It also matters to the people you care about the most – your family and close friends. Based on this simple observation, we created Nokia Pulse to address some of the most commonly asked questions on mobile phones: “where are you?”, “how do I get there?”, “where should we meet?”

Nokia Pulse helps you answer these questions with one tap by adding where you are to every conversation. From pickups and drop-offs to meet-ups, Pulse is as instant, private, and simple as sending a text, but far more useful and engaging. Oh, and did I mention fun!

Nokia Pulse is a mobile application that enables you to check in with the people you care about most – your family and close friends. You can also experience Nokia Pulse on the web and mobile web as a part of maps.nokia.com

Nokia Pulse

So, how does it work exactly? Imagine, you have just arrived at the airport. What do you typically do? Call/SMS someone close, say from your family to coordinate a pickup. Several SMS/calls are exchanged before the pickup happens successfully. With Nokia Pulse, all you need to do is type “Here!”or simply check-in and an instant notification of your update is sent to everyone in your family group tagged with your current location. You receive a response, “On my way” with a location tagged that shows you exactly where you ride is on the map. In addition, Nokia Pulse allows you to discover and post nearby places with recommendations, ratings, directions and even direct access to a phone number for a quick phone call. So while you wait, you can enjoy your favorite coffee at a nearby Café and inform your ride where you are with just one tap.

Have as many such groups as you like. Family, Friends, Soccer Club, Neighborhood Watch, High School PTA Club. With Nokia Pulse you can have the right conversations with the right people, all enhanced with location and always private.

All the details: Nokia Lumia 800

All about our stunning new smartphone.

The specs; the price; the facts

Nokia Pulse is launching in beta. That means we’re ready to hear from you. You should expect things to change frequently as we hone and improve the service further based on your feedback.

We are very excited about Nokia Pulse and think you will be too. We are also very eager to hear your feedback, suggestions and critique. We want to hear the good, the bad and the ugly. Our mission is to make it one-tap-easy to share where you are and what you are doing / thinking / seeing all in one. Please tell us how we’re doing by clicking on the “feedback” link on our landing page.

another great project by Nokia, connecting people. But may I point out of some inherent flaw of all these projects kicked off by Nokia during a product launch and then dies off silently due to lack of support or low take up rate? Nokia Pulse for instance require all parties involved to have a Nokia Lumia devices in the first place if there is no plans to include other older or existing devices. Notice the small pool of targetted user here? It is going to be really difficult to enjoy the real benefit of this service in full if the take up rate is not high.

I hope this service really takes off and proves me wrong as I have seen too many nokia projects being cut off after it has been implemented with low participation rate.

Sounds like you are talking about iOS too.  Exactly the same issue exists with iMessage and Facetime.

At Nokia World I was told there is a MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan version in development (and they were able to demo it). Hopefully Nokia will release such lab projects (the same with the Public Transportation app) rather than burying them under Windows-Phone-must-succeed politics.

    This is GREAT
    BETTER THAN FACEBOOK.
I’ve been reluctant to use facebook on personal space, because I don’t want to share the whole world on my daily activity. But this NOKIA PULSE is great.

    Thanks nokia.
I hope this one available for symbian and meego as well.

Actually, with Nokia Pulse it’s exactly the contrary. This is really cross platform: it’s available on Windows Phone (not only Lumia), it’s available on Symbian, it’s available on web and on mobile web.
    It’s for everyone!

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

There is no Nokia Pulse app available for Nokia N9 yet. But you can always use it on the mobile web site.

There seems to be no native client for the N9, even though there is one for symbian. What happened to the QT love?

  • Cycnus

    You’re right.
    I just notice that…
The SMS interface when he write SMS is DEFINITELY NOT WP7.
And the box next to him when he use the phone, it’s Nokia N9 box.

    WOW…..

you can also find it by looking that camera flash placement. :)

I would just like to say I love the new website.  The creative work that the staff of Nokia Conversations has done is great.  This site is exactly what I believe is the answer to a boring web experience.  The colors, mix of text fonts and layouts are fantastic.  I believe that MyNokiaBlog said it best with his visit to Nokia World as he looked at the displays that mixed Microsoft with Nokia, he said the staff of Nokia and their special creative  flair that seems to wrap around the viewer is one of Nokia’s greatest assets.

    …no you can’t have a raise.

  • Cycnus

The only things that were unique compared to other WP7 is only Nokia pulse…

but it’s available for other WP7 devices too…
    but not for N9….

I really don’t understand the way nokia think.
They would prefer someone buy another WP7 devices from another manufacture, rather than buying their own Nokia N9???

Thanks for the replies! I wrote the comment before checking out nokia pulse
website and was surprised that it is crossed platform! Too late for me to amend
    my reply though.

I am referring to ovi chat, ovi contacts, ovi share which is virtually
    useless.

I really love the idea of pulse and the entire Nokia Maps Suite…
    great work to the team…

    Thank you, Don.

“Only things?” Don’t forget Nokia Drive and Maps and Nokia MixRadio and Contacts Transfer and some new apps coming shortly. Also that the design is utterly stunning.

  • Cycnus

    @iandelaney:disqus

As a long time nokia user…. and using nokia drive and maps on daily basis….. I forgot that :)

BTW, I think that Nokia pulse could be nokia next big things. Why on earth it’s available on windows marketplace for other WP7 devices (I read it somewhere on the net), but not available for symbian and meego user?

The mix radio is also cool. Is it the same as nokia internet radio in symbian?

[...] Nokia Pulse lets you tell your friends and family exactly where you are, using the GPS built into your smartphone. this is different to other check-in services, you can target the check-ins to specific people rather than the whole planet. Not everybody wants to know where you are, so tell only the people who do.  Importantly, it will also protect your privacy, after all you don’t want anyone and everyone to know where you are. Especially burglars, when you are away from home. [...]

Not available on the N9???? Looks like Nokia folks are going all out to really screw over their OWN product. It’s all well and good if they want to do that but has it ever occured to them that some of us actually bought this phone?? This is one monumental eff up if there ever was one. As much as I love my device, I am starting to regret the decision, if ever people at Nokia wanted to turn customers off their products, well, they are doing an excellent job of it. WELL DONE, it’s really sad what they have done, they shouldn’t have brought it out in the 1st place if they weren’t going to be bothered to at east make decent go of it.
    Saddened….
