Nokia Lumia 800 vs. N9 vs. N8: Comparison pictures

Published by Paul Coombes on October 28, 2011

Stealthy black is the colour of the day, says me. So we rounded up three stealthy black Nokia phones to compare their shapes, sizes, curves and differences. Our eyes are attracted to one particular black beauty though, which is the new Nokia Lumia 800. Put side-to-side with an N9, there’s not much that sets them apart aside from a few details. Lets go…

Stealthy Black Nokia Phones
Left to right we have the Nokia N9, Lumia 800 and N8. In the photograph it looks like the N8 is taller but I assure you it’s not. The N9 and Lumia 800 both have a couple of millimetres on the imaging king there. In the centre you can see the Lumia 800′s back key, home button and search button. This means the 3.7″ display size is slightly smaller than the N9′s 3.9″.

Nokia Lumia 800
On the the centre handset here (Nokia Lumia 800) the extra button is a dedicated camera key. This is a welcome addition for photography focused users.

Nokia Phones
Here is a good example of just how sleek the Lumia 800 is in comparison to the N8. Although the N8 has a huge 12MP Carl Zeiss camera, it takes up a lot of room on the exterior of the phone with that large sensor and Xenon flash. Also we can see another difference in the N9 and Lumia 800 – the duel LED flash is positioned parallel to the camera lens instead of above. (Aha you see, the Lumia 800 is on the left this time, did you notice?)

Nokia 800

So there you have it. There’s our stealthy black comparison of the Nokia Lumia 800, Nokia N9 and Nokia N8. You can check out the rest of our pictures on our flickr(new) stream below. Also, what are your thoughts on the Lumia 800? Do you dig the subtle differences between it and the N9? How do you think it would look and feel with the camera from the N8 attached? Let us know!

    N9 is the best …

On one hand, I’m excited and interested in Nokia’s Lumia range. Looks slick and services look promising.

But on the other hand, I can’t seem to leave my year old N8. The camera on the N8 is beyond amazing for a mobile device. And overall N8 still performs quite well (could be better, but I’m not complaining).

And as for putting them together, ooohhhh… I WANT!!!

I am holding out for a Nokia Windows Phone that matches the N8 (amazing camera -don’t mind it sticking out in the back-, usb-on-the-go, hdmi-out, front facing camera, expandable memory)
ánd adds NFC, Amoled Clear Black screen.

Furthermore for me to leave Symbian I need for the Windows Phone services offering in my country (NL) to match that of the US market. Or at least an indication that it is coming soon.

    Good post, Paul!

Still a Nokia N9 fan and believer…maybe these emotions will be gone once I’ve tried the Nokia Lumia 800. :)

  • Valts

Those are three (and i assure you different) great and epic phones. Speaking about the look of these phones – in my oppinion almost all touch screen phones look the same because they are with square shape. The thing that make them look different for me is the UI when they are turned on, and probably display collor quality too. I don’t know why, but it has allways been just like that for me (since touch phones appeared in the market).
”How do you think it would look and feel with the camera from the N8 attached? Let us know!”
I have N8 (and since i am a man and like large phones) it’s camera size doesent bother me at all. So you can built in n8 type camera in next nokia phones surely. The only painfull part is, when yo buy the best phone with some kind of super extra, after a month there is already announced new phone with the same or better extras (I bought N8 and then N9 ceme out). :D But it’s normal :)

  • Maximilian1st

Where did you get this N8 from?!? I have never, ever, seen a Nokia N8 with a circle camera, they are always squares or squircles ;-p

  • smover

The Lumia 800 is definitly great for a start, but I was more impressed by the Nokia software inside than the outside. Don’t get me wrong : i LOVE the way the 800 is designed and build, it is outstanding and I would cry AWESOME too when I recieve my, but it’s nothing else than an N9 with Windows Phone 7 standard buttons.

What Nokia needs to provide is the same AWESOMENESS (you know how much this phone is awesome, don’t you ?) with :
    - a 4,3 screen,
    - 1ghz of RAM (so Mango should provide more open apps in the multitasking screen)
    - a MicroSD slot like the Samsung Focus. Why the MicroSD ? Because lot of people needs more than 16Mb of storage on their phone (cloud isn’t available everywhere for everyone !), but not everyone. So this MicroSD slot cost almost nothing to add and the right option to fully satisfy this population !
    - a bigger battery : with a larger screen there’s more room to hide a larger, bigger battery ! Nokia usually provide phones with better battery life than competition and this has to continue ! 1450mA is truly not much.

  • PaulC

@Maximilian – That is an after market lens that one of our guys in the office uses. I’m not sure of the details but I can find out for you.

@Valts – Thanks for your feedback; in some ways I agree with you about the size and shape, but we did get quite a few questions about what is the difference between them on Twitter, this is part of the reason we focused on that here.

@Jade – Thanks! Ooh time will tell I’m sure :)

  • Jakkel

N9 all the way. Just waiting for the updates? Nokia needs to follow through on this software.

  • Matt

    What’s with N8′s camera?

  • Gilles

The N9 is the winner. So why the hell didn’t you allow a dedicated camera button to the N9? It’s the only model which missed one. Was it somehow reserved to your mediocre yet still expensive Windows phone? And why is the N9 overpriced and restricted from market? To help selling your loose Windows range? Windows 8 might bring you some sales, but not this Lumia range. Expected better homework.

  • Hardrock1a

Mmmm… I like the subtle differences in the N9 and 800.
Now I am thinking a 900 series hero device for the US market launch. Same polycarb unibody, with a N8 camera, 4.3in display, in at least 16gb and 32gb flavors, FFC.

FYI Nokia, PLEASE set the minmum memory levels of your phones at 16Gb. 8Gb is just too small today and 16 is bare minimum.

  • Amidamaru

I still love my n8 although there are phones coming out in the market… because of its features(The HDMI, USB OTG, 12mp Cam). Maybe if they have put 1GH processor, higher RAM, and a higher resolution screen… it would be the ultimate phone for me… =)

  • Bill Baird

Honestly, I can’t wait until the Lumia 800 his the USA. I checked out the Samsung Galaxy IIS at AT&T as a replacement for my N8 and didn’t come away with that WOW feeling, esppecially after finding out the battery is a 1-1.5 day deal at best. I generally get 3 days from my N8 so that’s where I want to be. Now the next issue is: will I have to buy it from Nokia or will it be availabe from AT&T?

  • Tom Messett

Maximilian1st: Good question! I believe that particular N8 belongs to a certain Tim (writer @ Nokia Connects) who has attached a round magnetic strip to his N8 lense so he can attach a Fish Eye Lens… Under that there is a Squircle!

  • alguien

    N8 D UNA

  • cyril

i like the n9 better..and im buying it next month, my friend have it and im dying to have one too..

  • http://jayson.panti@facebook.com jayson panti

which is better? For me All of them are better because of their unique capabilities. N8 has a powerful camera with big internal memory. N9 a homekey less smartphone with the use of one simple gesture (a swipe) everything is incredibly easy to use specially the multitasking view. Lumia 800 a smartphone loaded with a power of microsoft windows phone 7.5 mango which is very new that can fight head to head to other smartphone these days. Great work nokia! n_n

  • resh

Nokia has set milestone in their smartphone category with N8, what they should’ve done after that is move further from that benchmark. N9 or Lumia, with 8mp camera, no memory card slot, lack of app support, its like stepping back. What Nokia should have done is upgrade N8 with better CPU, RAM, increase screen size and pack it with Belle… There you go… you have the best smartphone in the market.

  • juwelrana

    N9 still best in the world. It’s not only a set..it’s a atom booms.guys u can’t think what we going to lost..meeGo+Qt=wow

  • ahtizaz

Nokia n8 is dream phone of nokia corporation…..

  • Stronginhim

They all look truly amazing. What about the battery life how long does it last. I like the N9 with the new software, the Lumia 800 with Windows Mobile, well, linking up with Microsoft what a smart idea. Nokia make an incredible camera I am not sure which one is the best way to go.

  • sushanthmanya

    my hero N73 is best

  • sushanthmanya

N8 is my hero it is very best

  • Thekappe

N8′s camera is’nt circle, but in that pictures, on the camera is little magnet. You cat put there a fisheye lense. That’s it.

  • asad

    awsome

  • asad khan

    add price of these sets

  • Khaja Rouf

N9 and Lumia 800 is cool and awesome !!! jus don lyk the N8 :D

  • Waqas

Please change the designs of your phone nokia! the three are alike. And come out of 4 inch screen size and give us a bigger but thinner phone.

I love Nokia but HTC and Dell Streak are attracting me due to there screen size and thickness.

Also please include acessories like Nokia BH 905,play 360 and MD-11 with the box worldwide.

Please bring some change in box contents, phone designs and screen size.

I have never admired a phone before but this time round,I can’t wait to have these amazing phone.Nokia Lumia 800 do have features that are of great help but recently i do not have a phone to use.If i can be the luckiest man in the all world sincerely i don’t no what i will do or i will have to die of joy.

looks smart give it me for free of cost

  • Jino

I’m wondering why mobile phones are becoming bigger and bigger instead of being smaller. These phones can’t fit in any pocket

  • Prasenjit Singh Bist

A symbian man since the days of NOKIA 6600. I love my N8 lots of conspiracy and a team of jealous donkeys led by many so called crappy pundits tried to malign the device, but any one tell me what does symbain or symbian 3 lacks any one functionality UI ofcourse can be better s60 v5 was a crap who knows better than me one of those unlucky N97 customer but apart from it symbian 3 was a new breath complete to take on the touch generation look at belle its awesome man. but ppl conspire against this successful champion OS. I love my N8 and although i will buy and i do love the Nokia lumia 800 and other NOKIA phones as I am also a nokia man i breath this brand never ever touched anythin else. I have a spiritual connection with my NOKIA n8. May be I will some day die with it but no other phone can ever have this relation. Salutes to Symbian and NOKIA n8

  • Boolaboo

N9 all the way! Followed by N8 and the Lumia 800

  • Gilles

The N9 is the winner. So why didn’t you allow a dedicated camera button to the N9? It’s the only model which missed one. And why is the N9 overpriced and restricted from market? Windows 8 might bring you some sales, but not this Lumia range. Expected better homework.

  • MONSOUR

am a die hard nokia fan, from 3210 and a lot of models i got, my latest is c7, and planning to buy n9. but my friends were buying iphone 4, am now puzzled. tell me
which is better? iphone 4, 4s,galaxy s,SII or nokia n9,i kept on telling to my friends Nokia is the unbeatable brand, and no. 1 forever!
I wanted to prove them that nobody beat Nokia.

  • MONSOUR

with regards to design all are winners, I love N8, I love N9, I love Lumia 800, but I need high pixel camera for nokia, and a water proof so that i can bring it to beaches worry free of getting wet.

  • simon wilson

I’m a little confused. Is the Lumia 800 meant to replace the N8? There’s so much missing from the 800, for roughly the same price as an N8 – I wondered who would buy it? Is there another phone following hard on the heels of the 800 that has the same capabilities? Should N8 users hold out for something more than a capability downgrade with a new OS? The Nokia strategy isn’t particularly clear.

I have just bought the N9. It looks amazing, far better then its competitors, and the OS is great. It also has a forward view camera for Skype so I will stay with the N9 for now!
Good work Nokia. Now lets see more WP :)

  • Francis Suan

N8 is still the best camera phone. If only the N8 had a faster processor, NFC and clear black display, i’d surely upgrade to it. Symbian is great on the battery. I can go for 2 days without having to recharge the phone.

which is more better nokia lumia800 or nokia n8 leaving the quality of camera.

  • DHANASEKAR M

if you make n9 to work in windows platform it will be great….. if u do that then n8 ll be the the best competitor to other phones….

  • Arvydas

Nokia Lumia 800 is the best phone that Nokia offers. It has decent OS (the best of all), it has good camera, good speakers, nice design and screen. But I am waiting for Nokia Lumia 900 to show up :) I hope, that Nokia will release it soon

  • Cristian Trohin

Somehow, the phone that catches my eye from the three is still the N8. I keep dreaming of one for myself. It’s been the best device I ever used. The N8 camera still has no rival on the market, and it’s built to last. Even if Symbian will die, the N8 will still shine. It’s one of those phones that once you’ve gotten used to, it’s hard to let go.

  • ahmed abdelhamid

    good company

  • Michael Lococo

So ALL your phones are puny??? Those are ALL too SMALL!

  • paul

    n8 the besttttt

  • Rajesh Rai

N8 wins, even a year later, without a doubt.

    • PaulC

It certainly has got a lot of great assets to it. Are you a big photography fan Rajesh?

  • sammy

We need Nokia + Windows + Qwerty , this will be the best BB substitute

Great suggestion Sammy. I think it’s fair to say we are just at the beginning of this story!

  • mohmed el atpany

the difrant betwen N8 and N9
    is …(1) one nuber
    hhhhhhhhh

  • SSharma

Nokia will keep coming out with advanced phones always, but I am sure they never expected the N8 to be such a big success story. In India, it is the only phone which got a price hike after 2 months of launch; further, even today, it is the buzz at any Mobile shop and a thing to flaunt by its owner

    • PaulC

Hi SSharma, great insight, thanks for sharing! :)

  • Sherif

why do you care about camera ???? if you are a photography fan ,buy a camera , its a cell phone so great they put cameras like those now an 8MP is much much for a mobile PHONE ,its a phone!

  • Cristian Trohin

@Sherif You don’t have kids do you man? When you’ll have one, you’ll understand how important it is to capture memorable moments on camera and how handy a phone like the N8 is in such moments. You can’t carry a camera when you go out with your kid, but you always carry your phone. I too did not see the advantage in having a good cameraphone until my kid was born.

  • Dano222

    i love my N8

  • Toni Fuller

I have not been happy with my N8 as a phone, maybe I got a dud!

  • sir jed

Please post some comments, about the front facing camera, thanks

  • Yip, N8

I have had the galaxy s2 since June 2011 and N8 since November 2010.

I just can’t use any other phone after the N8, it’s just too good at what it’s built for – Camera, GPS, quality, size, sound, hdmi, USB otg, fm transmitter, multiple charging options, lasting battery, new updates, 16gb, cables included, easy sharing, etc etc etc…. etc

Why the hell would you buy a cheaply built Samsung or overrated Apple which both have big flaws?

    Nokia you Rock!

  • Archie_

Feeling kinda old school right now. My N8 is about to be outclassed in a big way by the Pureview 808. Still an awesome device, everything that’s on it has been much appreciated. And there’s a new (Alpha) Gravity that’s taken it’s awesome even higher!
