Published by Adam Fraser on October 28, 2011

LONDON, UK – We’ve already given a overview of Xbox on your Nokia Lumia 710 and Nokia Lumia 800 using the Xbox Companion app. This enables you to perform a variety of functions on your Xbox using your Nokia Lumia phone. We caught up with Krissy from Microsoft again to record a hands-on demo so you can see exactly how you can connect your smartphone to your Xbox and find a wealth of content.

Do I understand correctly that lumia acts essentially as a remote control?

  • Anonymous

Yes, i would say that its a remote control through wireless lan…
    its a cool idea…

It’s that. But the possibilities are wide-open now. e.g. as a game controller, as a secondary controller, to show content that’s only on your phone, etc.etc.

    wow
Lumia is able to show game content during gaming?
I would say the new Nintendo Wii U platform has a problem :-D

I saw a demo a few months ago with Kinect and a Windows Phone together in action…

So, what I can read here is that all existing Symbian users are not considered?

  • Anonymous

its logic that a Microsoft platform features its own online gaming service
To make xbox live an exclusive feature for windows phone is the only way to offer some different things

  • http://twitter.com/hmmJD1 JD!

I think this is not a microsoft forum. This is Nokia forum.

But what I am reading into your comments is that Nokia doesnt exist in this it seems. It is now governed by MS…

    Thanks for clarifications anyways.

    What a bosh…
Nokia decided to create new phones with Windows Phone as the software base.

Whats wrong with that? its normal that all the informations around Lumia for example is all around the new platform wp7.5 mango… what is the problem?

We have Xbox with Kinect and the user interface is slow and annoying. I definitely don’t want that in my phone.

Neither I or my sons (8 and 11 year old) can understand the purpose of the Xbox avatar, which is like a cartoon character that represents you. In order to play, you first have to go through menus and options to make your avatar. Thereafter, your “cute”, animated avatar will show in the menus before you start your game, but not in any of the actual games. What’s the point? My sons and I all just use the same avatar.

I cant understand yout critical words.
Kinect is slow? Maybe your room setup is not optimized for kinect.

You are definatley wrong when you say that no game is supporting avatars. There are lots of games with avatar support.

    Kinect Sports
    Kinect Sports Season Two
    Hole in the wall (arcade)
    Leedmees (Arcade)

    Kinec Fun Labs

    Avatar Planking (Indie)
    Avatar Punch (Indie)
    Avatar Panic (Indie)
    Avatar Fighter Online (indie)
    Avatar Chess (Indie)
    Avatar Drop (Indie)

just an incomplete list, there are much more

    here are some more

No one wants to have avatars in Gears of War or other franchieses like Forza or others…

what is your final problem? cant understand the critics.

I meant the Xbox user interface (like the menus) is slow due to unnecessary animations, including animations of the avatars. I didn’t mean the games themselves are slow. I didn’t know that there are games that use the avatars. We play some of the most popular Kinect games such as Fighters Uncaged and Dance Central, and those games don’t use the avatars.

My point is that users should not be forced to make their own avatars in order to use the Xbox unless the user is going to play a game where an avatar is needed. The avatars are very annoying, similar to the much-hated Microsoft puppy and paperclip animations in Microsoft Office for Windows XP, and serve no purpose for 99% of Xbox users.

Let’s say I want to play a quick round of Angry Birds on my Windows Phone while waiting in line. From what I have seen so far in the videos here, the way it works is I have to first tap on the Xbox tile, which then loads on the screen my avatar, who waves its arms and smiles (what’s the point??). Only after that I’m allowed browse through the game titles I have on my phone. But even then, the boneheaded avatar takes up most of the screen area, so it’s hard to see the game titles.

it seems that you have too much free time to create such luxury problems :-)

if you dont want to use the avatars – so don’t use them…

  • MaskedMarvel

It is my understanding that you cannot use an Xbox console or the Xbox function on a Windows Phone without first creating an avatar. So I don’t have the choice of not to use them. The avatars cause the user interface to be slow and annoying, which is not  a “luxury problem”.

you only need to log into the main ‘xbox’ app once to view the games. Then you can pin the games you want to the main start screen, so you don’t have to open the xbox app everytime, thus avoiding the ‘annoying avatars’. Also, I don’t get any slowdown on my xbox with the avatars….. strange.

  • MaskedMarvel

I’m glad to hear that it’s possible to play a game without starting the Xbox app first.

Talk about an annoying voice. She made certain syllables way too long, and came across like she was reading enthusiastically from a teleprompter.

I can assure you she wasn’t reading from a teleprompter. She was really enthusiastic and clearly enjoyed her job.
