Poll results: Best of Symbian Belle

Published by Adam Fraser on November 4, 2011

GLOBAL – Symbian Belle is the OS that follows Symbian Anna. While Symbian Anna is still in the roll-out stage, there are some Nokia phones being sold already with Symbian Belle pre-installed. With the new OS comes new features and functions, one being new homescreen widgets. We opened a poll to ask you what were your favorite new widgets. Let’s take a look at those results.

Poll results: Symbian Belle homescreen favorites, pie chart

Receiving most of the votes and with 24 per cent, was the pull down status panel. This is where you can swipe your finger down from the top of the screen to open up a notifications menu, useful for quick access to many functions. We don’t blame you for choosing this as your number one, we love it, too.

The second most liked feature is the redesigned tool bar at the bottom of the screen, taking just over 14 per cent. It seems the new transparent icons are more preferred than the opaque ones on Symbian Anna.

When it comes to homescreen real-estate, nearly 14 per cent look forward to the ability to add six screens. You probably want all your apps, contacts and shortcuts within easy swipeable-reach. Who can blame you?

In fourth place, is the new email widget. Its white background and extra large screen space mean it’s easier to read subject lines, while also being able to read more in general. Over ten per cent agree.

The other options received just over one per cent and was a wide mix of answers. Weather widget, RSS reader and video player were all among the few results. There was no real winner here in this category.

What do you make of the results? Let us know in the comments below.

I have a nokia N8 and have the updated version of the Symbian Anna installed on it. I really love the performance of the phone after recent version updated on Anna. However, i am desperately waiting to my hands on the Symbian Belle update.

Just wondering if i can get a official release date for Belle to be pushed on N8.

I’m using a 701 received through the Nokia Nielsen Smartphone project so don’t know if the firmware is the same as released models.  I agree that the pull down and tool bar are the best improvements – though could be improved further (“Music player paused” in the drop down doesn’t help me see what is paused – a track name when paused would be useful).
My biggest issue is with the new widgets themselves though and the lack of choice.  New music player is too big and wastes space at the sides, why can’t the old S3/Anna 1×4 music widget be included? Digital clock looks poor (why copy android?) and is too big, profiles wastes space too.  The old Clock/Date/Profile widget seemed much more space efficient.  These old widgets presumably should work on belle with not much tweaking.  Users should at least have the choice between new and old.

You can see through the tool bar at the bottom of the homescreen, showing the wallpaper behind it.

Adam, do you know if Belle will be available for N8 users? I haven’t seem any word about it.

  • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

It should become available for all devices currently running Symbian Anna, so yes that would include the Nokia N8.

I’ve included a link below pointing to an article we posted on Symbian Belle a couple of months ago that has lots of Symbian Belle details.

CEO likes to copy physical designs for wp7 as he copied N9 and 603′s designs for lumia series…well if he likes so much copy pasting then why not introduce full customization in that ugly boring tiles os? and why not copy pasting symbian^3 functionality NFC,usb-otg etc in wp7? and where is tethering support in wp7…which is there in symbian since last 2 years!  Oh may be he cant because microsoft is the main boss!……wp7 is poor ios wanna be but doesnt have quality apps and games like apple app store…and by the way currently available htc radar and samsung focus s and omnia w look far more impressive than that Lunatic series phones and not to mention new up coming 720p display powerful android phones .

there should be a poll for whether people liked the new conversations blog theme. it has stopped me from visiting the site almost completely. seriously, this has got to be the single most disastrous UI overhaul.

Thanks for your feedback! We keep a close eye on analytics, and our visitor numbers have actually gone up after the introduction of the new site. Which features of the site are you unhappy with?

  • Cod3rror

Increase in visitor numbers is mainly because of recent Nokia world event  and this site should have mobile version optimized for symbian^3,wp7,ios etc phones

  • http://aani.nokia.fi Heidi

We’ve taken Nokia World into account, and the figures are still higher than normally after these big events. We’re naturally very pleased. We’re still working on integrating the site on more mobile browsers; we know there’s still some work to do. BTW I think we may just have managed to create the most tablet-friendly website ever. The site looks brilliant when you view it on a tablet!

  • Cod3rror

Well thats great if mobile version of this site is already in development….but not sure what you meant by “ we may just have managed to create the most tablet-friendly website ever” !!! your team’s top priority should be optimal access of this site on pc web browsers like firefox etc

  • Anonymous

I really like it, Heidi. I think it has a wonderful, fresh new look, and I find myself coming back more than I did before. Thumbs up from me!

  • Facu87

I´m agree with the results. Special mention to new calendar!! Please allow sync for it again!

  • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

Actually, something I noticed only recently is that you can scroll through the latest 20 emails through the homescreen widget. That’s really cool.

the site is unusable from a mobile. the whole thing of looking for updates around like an application is beyond me. I’d rather like some links the conventional way. it’s not about being reluctant to change – its just that it makes good sense to stick to relevant ui standards. everything is now invisible. I am forced to click and see if there are some updates.

    * I am forced to see an ugly (being subjective) large background image that adds very little value to the site.I’d much rather see an image that is relevant to the news that’s being shown. so what style over substance ? it also makes much of the relevant content beaten down.
    * visual noise, no clean look, hard to find what you want, strain to search for relevant headers and content
    * the site is not a presentation – so this directional arrows and the + sign is like a mobile ui transplanted into a website. metro style notification for a website ? does appeal to me. sorry guys.
    * I want to see lots of content not plenty of design elements that look like an incoherent mess. there’s no grid that aligns itself nicely. it looks very edgy, maybe it appeals to a younger demography. Don’t know, can’t speak for others.

maybe its just me, and my preferences, but thanks for listening anyways. I will still drop in, maybe through rss for updates. thankfully there are other sites that give Nokia updates.

    Hi Heidi,

What i dislike the most is:
the comment section were only show small number of comment, thus in the long comment section, it’s really hard to navigate and follow the comment.

and the web looks like it’s optimize for small screen, so in large screen there’s too many waste (there’s empty space in left and right).

why still keep the bottom bar of the homescreen in belle?? that bottom bar is just ridiculously REDUNDANT!!! Why is there a need for a menu icon when there is already a physical menu key for it? and why is there an options icon to modify the homescreen when you can do the same by tapping and holding?? it is purely unnecessary… And as for the call button, is it crucial to have a virtual call button when there is a physical one that serves the same purpose and even has the advantage of being used anywhere around the interface? (excluding the n8, e7, and x7). Suggestion nokia, can you please, as you did with the pull-down notification screen, do a pull-up call (dialer) screen and thus removing that cumbersome bottom bar while also making available more homescreen space for better widgets.

Actually Belle can go completely button less with the bottom bar. Nokia should not put any buttons for next Belle, except one (may be) for checking the running apps only. Except that, there is no use of buttons at all on Belle Phones!

Also, It would be good, if we can choose the size of widget, e.g. I would like to see larger calendar and email client than music player.

But overall, Belle is such a refresh feeling! Good Job.

Actually, I’d love pull up a dialler with one minor customization. Nokia could add a small bar with virtual buttons for recent, contacts, email, and text messaging.

Better too if they could add an option to add an app drawer, multitasking window and consolidated messaging and social updates to the pages catering to those who want a more Meego style interface.

So the people in the U.S. who haven’t been able to get the Anna update yet are only not able to get it Over The Air because their Cellular providers aren’t allowing it through? So if I am in the U.S. and buy the phone, there is nothing preventing me from upgrading it to Anna immediately (i.e. I don’t have to wait until Nokia makes it available in the U.S.?) ?
Really need a good answer to this and it was my understanding that people in U.S. simply could not get the update AT ALL.
