Nokia Lumia 800: in-depth video documentary

Exclusive short film tells the design collaboration story behind Nokia's first Windows Phone

Published by Mike Cooper on November 10, 2011

LONDON, United Kingdom – Since the launch of the Nokia Lumia 800 two weeks ago at Nokia World 2011 I’ve been lucky enough to spend time with some of the key designers responsible for its creation, in order to bring you this exclusive in-depth video documentary. It’s as much a story about collaboration and taking risks as it is about design. At 8-minutes long, it’s not your ordinary bite-size online video, but it is packed with heaps of fascinating insights and exclusive access to never-before-seen materials. So it’s worth setting aside a little time if you’re interested in discovering how the Nokia Lumia 800 was born.

Stefan Pannenbecker

VP of Industrial Design: “You know what’s most rewarding? People are looking at Nokia with fresh eyes again”

The Nokia Lumia 800 builds on Nokia’s “fabula” design language, a visual style that has been created to be used across a range of products, including the Nokia N9. But in creating Nokia’s first Windows Phone there was a whole lot more to the process than simply blending together Nokia hardware and Microsoft software. There was an amazing amount of collaboration and a brave new approach to design that was applied to enable this product to come to life. This process was underpinned by a shared vision and determination from both Nokia and Microsoft, passionately articulated by Stefan Pannenbecker, VP of Industrial Design at Nokia:

“We had one simple goal…
to build a better phone. Something that seamlessly fuses the best industrial design with the best software and user experience.”

Fast forward to key moments in the video >>

    Let us be honest,
it’s just a N9 with slightly another hardware and other OS, that’s it.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

As it says in the piece, the design language was always intended for more than one device – just like last year’s devices like the N8, E7, C7 all have a family resemblance.

      • Anonymous

Ian, was the design intended for WP phones? That answer does not change the fact that the 800 is more or less exact copy of N9. Giving a name to the design language does not change the facts.

If the design was not intended for WP based phones (and the design work started maybe a year ago) the phare by Stefan: “something
that seamlessly and naturally fuses together beautiful industrial design with the best software and user experience” is close to a lie.The industrial design and UX are not made hand in hand as at least implied in the video.Only things changed from N9 was a camera and Wp buttons on the cover and new colors on WP tiles. Of course the internals are different and a big part of those are designed by Compal. Why arent they present in the video?

It was intended basically for a Meego. The swipe UI needs that glass shape. MS’s OS doesn’t need it. You need a break, I guess.

I still can’t understand in which way Lumia is better than any other WP7 unit?

    • Tarhini Hassan

so you are saying that Lumia800 is the same as htc radar …
      well have a look again!
as the software side is considered, what do u expect to be done in 8 months ??
it’s a great start and hopefully nokia will keep doing a better product one after the other …

      • Jukka

Well, almost the same, yes. Design is different. Camera is better in 800, but Radar has front-facing cam. Radar is a bit cheaper (nokia tax, right?) Build quality is the same, I guess (both comes from Foxxcon, right?)
So, tell me, what is the _BIG_ difference?

I don’t think anyone really has anything *against* the first Nokia-WP7 phone being the N9 design, but I for one resent Nokia for treating us like idiots by not even mentioning ONCE the N9 in this video, it’s just an insult. I also hope Nokia do well, I also think chucking WP in the N9′s great design was a good move to get something quality out in such a short time, JUST DON’T TALK ABOUT THE 800 AS IF THE N9 NEVER HAPPENED!!!

The first video-guy Stephan Pannebecker says: “it takes courage to try something new, it can be scary.   …courage comes easy and the risk pays off”  — yes, wright! you has no courage with Nokia Lumina 800 to try something new, you just copied existing design from Nokia N9 and now post every second article about WP7 phones as like you are invented rocket science.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

As it says in the article, the design language of the two phones and initially implemented on the Nokia N9, was always planned for more than one device. So effectively, both devices were being designed at the same time.

      • Jukka

Then why the post named: ”
Nokia Lumia 800: in-depth video documentary” and not “Nokia N9 and Lumia 800: in-depth video documentary” ?

And, by the way, I don’t believe that “both devices were being designed at the same time”. No way!

        if both N9 & 800 share the same design, what makes 800 _so_special_, when N9 is _not_so_special_

And what is that big-BIG difference between Lumia and other WP7 devices (except design / camera / maps )?

Do you mean this: “ a visual style that has been created to be used across a range of products, including the Nokia N9″?  This guy talking only like “we,we and Lumina, we, Lumina bla bla Microsoft bla bla” – whole video sounds like they invented the design specially for Lumina and it came first on track. …and seems like N9 it just got it body afterwards. Liars.

    Funny thing is…

I always watch the GSMArena statistic, and Nokia N9 were one of the phone that have a very high hits.

When Nokia introduce the Nokia 800, nokia 800 take leads for a couple of days, then, Nokia N9 hits were more than Nokia 800 again… by almost double.

So, why 800 this, 800 that, when N9 is clearly the winner? Common nokia, both were your product (kid), why taking favorite with the 800?

    • MobileStrongBOX

Same with Youtube: when write Nokia in search bar, the first option is “Nokia N9″. When Lumia was launched, it appeared in 2nd or 3rd position, but now is GONE :)

I was wondering if anyone at nokia conversations heard the news that nokia maps and nokia drive were hacked, at available at others WP7 brand?
    (source: phonearena dot com)

    • Anonymous

Actually, this might be good for Nokia in the short term.  It’s akin to Marlboro being counterfeited in China when Altria really couldn’t get the product into the market before establishing a venture with the Chinese monopoly.  The brand recognition was already in the country by the time the product was being produced legitimately.  As long as the service quality is OK on other OEM platforms, it’s good for Nokia that the user base for its exclusive service is expanding.  However, when Nokia has the full hardware portfolio for MS ready by early next year, I suspect those hackers are going to have to work a lot harder.

          • MobileStrongBOX

It’s not about new technology! You don’t get it! It’s because Nokia dont give users what the want! This is the first time in history (I guess) when a manufacturer refuze to sell (globaly) a product, even if the users want to buy it. It is “user: Please NOKIA, give me your N9, please make MeeGO even better, please, please!!. Nokia: No,no,no! We give you WP7!”. And all this because NOKIA CEO is a former Microsoft boss! That makes me angry!

UX Design? Are you kidding? It’s just another Windows Phone with identical UX on it. Which part of the UX did Nokia designed?

You are strange Nokia! Why you don’t just say: Yes the N9 has such a great Design, we use it for the Nokia 800 as well. They are twins, basta! This “we all made new bla bla bla Microsoft bla bla lumia” is such a joke!

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

As the article says: “The Nokia Lumia 800 builds on Nokia’s “fabula” design language, a visual style that has been created to be used across a range of products, including the Nokia N9.”

As a designer I see two identical products. When you say design language “xyz” I agree with you when you are talking about the N8 and the E7 for example. I guess the N9/Lumia 800 is the first product of the fabula familiy and hopefully there are other family members to come, because the design is beautiful!

You have a tough sell on your hands, Ian.

In videos that speak of the design of the N9 you get a focus on the N9, and how the effort was to build an “all screen phone” – no buttons, the removal of the last vestige of the “mouse click”.

In videos speaking of the Lumia 800 design, you get a focus on the Lumia 800. How the design encourages the swipe gesture, hence the curve to the glass.

It’s as if, when speaking of one phone, the other doesn’t exist (and I understand why, a given video is about a particular phone).

But one line in an article speaking of a design language is unlikely to be able to redirect attention that’s been focused by many minutes of video.

If I may say, my personal opinion is that the N9 is a more true expression of your design language. It’s cleaner, more spare, and you’ve the advantage of being able to have the software more closely conform to the design language. Metro is a design language of its own – it shares many of the principles of yours, but there are areas where it diverges – and you will have to compromise your language to conform to theirs (Microsoft’s).

You’ve made your choice and I’m not (any longer) going to argue. Anyway, I’ve made my choice and bought the N9, so I’m already winning, yes? :)

      • http://www.vkvraju.com vkvraju

What do you mean by “including”? Including what? It is only & only the N9 where this lumia got its light/life from.

Efectivamente!!!

“We managed to put vanilla Windows Phone inside a ready phone in just 6 months.”

    Oh, wow, the speed!

“It’s not vanilla, they have custom coloured live tiles!!11″ There’s nothing subtle about changing their colour, and as it’s about the only customization a Windows Phone OEM (Windows Phone OEM like Nokia!) can do, it’s present on all Windows Phone devices from any manufacturer. You want subtle? How about double tap to wake or sleep screen clock? Or any of the hundreds of subtle design elements in MeeGo Harmattan?

Oh, but Nokia is now working in the sandbox, the little sandbox that Microsoft likes to keep its w***es in. It couldn’t manage to copy even just one of the software subtleties that the N9 was praised for since the Day 1.

Nokia, yes, the phone is beautyful.
And I wish you great success with W7.

And the documentry is well shot, too.

But that not one word was lost that most of the creative process of creating this device was focused on the N9 is really disappointing. The design is great, why do you see it necessary to lie about its heritage? The N8 isn’t mentioned as well…Fact is, that flat display wasn’t made for WP7 but for meego.

This isn’t a documentary, this is pure marketing.

As it says in the article, the fabula design language was always intended for more than one device – just like last year’s devices like N8, E7, C7 and C6 all have a family resemblance. We think fabula is a great design and a perfect match for the Lumia experience!

Design Language , fabula blah blah blah, seriously how can you make comment like that and still have any respect for yourself.
This video very clearly make no mention of the N9 at all, it very clearly implies the design was made from scratch with the Lumia in mind. This is a flat out lie and we all know it. The N9 was the reason this design was born and we all know it was in development long before the windows announcement was made.
I can think of any other Nokia phone ever to use an Identical design as a past phone, yes variations  but never identical(and no the addition of a single button and removal of front camera do not count as variation in design).

      • anon

Design language? Come on, drop that. The strength of the N9 is to fuse industrial design together with an exciting UX. IF you want to stick with your design language paradigm, then you’ve gotta admit that WP7 is missing quite a bit vocabulary.

The N9′s UX focuses on elegant minimalism, whereas the WP7 is just minimalistically … dull.

With the end of MeeGo, Nokia is giving up the best chance we ever had to surpass iOS. It will not happen with the design philosophy behind WP.

This is more of an emotional video rather than a technical design video.

I’m just quite confused, the Nokia N9 was first conceptualized to perfectly combine hardware and software. The lumia 800 only added 3 buttons on the screen, a camera key, and altered the positioning of the flash. Even Stephen Elop mentioned that they have taken this design from the N9 and refined it.

Why is there no mention of the N9 in this video? Maybe they could have just focused on the fabula design process rather than focusing on the nokia and microsoft collaboration. Acknowledging the lumia’s heritage (N9) and then explaining the “refinements” done to the lumia 800 would have been more believable and real.

Props to the videomakers though, nice composition as always.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

I think that your observation that this is an ‘emotional’ video is spot-on. Creating the design language that shapes both the Lumia 800 and Nokia N9 was about *love* for what people want from a phone, as well as the technical capabilities and specs.

      • APai

missing the point. wouldn’t blame you.

This video very clearly make no mention of the N9 at all, it very
clearly implies the design was made from scratch with the Lumia in mind, as if the N9 never existed.
This is a flat out lie and we all know it. The N9 was the reason this
design was born and we all know it was in development long before the
windows announcement was made. Continuously repeating “fabula” isnt goign to change the fact that you are flat out lying.

But seriously now @nokia:twitter why are you treating your viewers as if they were so un-intelligent not to realise that the design and hardware had nothing to do with WP7. The hardware of this phone has been perfected for Meego in the form of the N9.
A more honest video would have been how to leverage an iconic design for an alternative operating system.
A bit more honesty and clarity would be appreciated.

      I could not agree more.

In this video 5:15 “Then we
asked ourselves, how do you make the software experience and the physical design
become one so that the Windows phone software feels utterly natural in it’s
integration with no distraction. Part of this meant making the WP panorama … as
instinctive as possible. We felt we could achieve that by creating a soft rounded
object with curved glass edges that would naturally encourage…”

      –> That sounds as the
industrial design was based on WP.

      Here in Finnish on N9:
“physical desing and software are made to support each other”
      Youtube: “Nokia
      N9 – Saumatonta yhteistyötä”

      Here Anton Fahlgren tells
the story of N9 design (by Phil): “during the summer of 2009, and that’s
where it began… I wanted to define what high-end means today and take a more
software-driven approach, and show people it’s not just the hardware that makes
a great phone: it’s the UI and platform and how it all works together… we did
a couple different sizes, but they were all based on the same design family.
But the one that made it to the market was the Nokia N9…The basic concept is
that seamless continuity of the form, and I think it was something we refined
      with the UI.”
      Conversations: “nokia-n9-the-designers-story/”

      Again Mr Elop showing L800
and saying (9:05):”refined version of the N9s industrial design”
      Gigaom: “gigaom-interview-nokia-ceo-stephen-elop”

Either Swipe and WP UX are
almost identical or Nokia is trying to sell Lumia 800 based on disruptive design
      story.

      • APai

did they know they were going to go the windows way back in 2009 ? I doubt that very much. thanks for the evidence on the contrary to the current round of marketing BS

I´ve to agree on that, Ian, jiipee is right:

Your “like” is just a try to stem against the tide of frustrated and diehard NOKIA users and customers…. As a Nokia employee, “defending” the “new and glorious” WinPhone strategy is demanded from you…but it shouldn´t be expressed with a “like” in EVERY pro Winphone post…that´s kind of weird on a very low level

      Hi @iandelaney:disqus ,

It’s really heart breaking for me that you press LIKE in reply like this.

We’re NOT TROLLS and you know it. We’re the reason that Nokia exist and strong.

I really want to warn nokia, please don’t fall like RIM. If you go to GSMArena, PhoneArena, Gizmodo, etc, you will see that everytime there’s a thread about RIM, and some say RIM is dead, no one defend it anymore. ALL agree that RIM is dead. PERIOD.

At least, Nokia, is still loved by their user. Therefore, I really hope NOKIA KEEP listening, or may I say…. Start listening to their user.

Please READ around the web. If your Nokia 800 is really great, your current symbian user will flock into Nokia 800 and smile about it. But if your user still think Nokia 800 still short of something, DON’T shot our feet if we’re yell here. We’re yell here because we LOVE nokia.

As of now…. I still don’t really like the way Nokia+Microsoft, because I still think symbian is better, meego is better, and Microsoft with ZUNE is a step back. AGAIN….. DON’T SHOOT ME. Learn from what I said/write here…. Improve that…. fix that step back, and make me droll about Nokia WP7 devices. After all, we’re all human, if we (NOKIA USER) really think Nokia 800 is better than Nokia Symbian/Meego, we won’t hesitant to buy it.

They created a design language. A bit like how the E7 and N8 share the same design language – and the C6-01 and C7, for that matter.

You don’t blow that amount of work on just one device. I personally hope there will be a few more variations. The N9/Lumia 800 designs are amazing.

      • Jack Wang

I hope there’s an Android variant, because Microsoft and Nokia Stores suck at international app availability. Apps would be “Not Available for Your Country” because Nokia encourages fragmentation. This is evident in regional variants that cannot input another language, or even view it.

      • Anonymous

You should have just said N9 design. The 800 design is just a prototype of the original. N9 & 800 don’t stand together.

My God, MeeGo is  lovely!! It is far better than WP7! It has beautiful controls(soft buttons, lists) not just text and pictures like WP7! And integrates perfectly all of internet messaging services (facebook, skype, feeds) with contacts on the phone! The notification desktop is great!

As many others have already stated here, I think it’s ridiculous how those Windows Phone-Nokia folks speak of the Lumia 800′s design as if the N9 never existed.  Ridiculous, we’re not all dumb idiots y’know! Sure it’s nice and pretty, sure you made some design changes, but to talk about making the curved glass etc. with WP7 in mind is ignoring the Meego design team’s efforts as if they never did a thing. The Lumia 800 is THANKS TO the N9. Period.

I know it’s been said many times, but I had to say it for you Nokia because you need to understand the magnitude of this Mistake, this video is full of lies. N9 physical design was never intended for WP. one is round and the other is full of squares. Why the sudden you think your fans are so naive?  this is the kind of marketing that has been keeping me away from Apple for many years. nothing personal here but your true fans are insulted. just my 0.02

Ok, this video is really sad. It is one thing to be dishonest to your audience (as if the N9 never existed), but to take away credit from your own staff (who actually designed the N9) and talk about their work like if they never existed on the Lumia is a new low point for Nokia.

Just look at the “DAILY Interest Top 5″ list on GSM Arena:

There you have your answer black on white WHAT PEOPLE (your customers by the way) WANT TO BUY and ARE INTERESTED AT!

It´s NOT the Lumia – which leads the list, it´s the N9!

By making such a video in which the legacy of the N9 is omitted completely and telling a story about how the design was made for the Microsoft Lumia 800 you declare us readers and customers as sheep who aren´t able to read the truth out of in between the lines.

Regarding the design language BS: If that was true, then why the split to only market the N9 in certain countries which exclusively promote the Nokia 800 instead? If it was a “design language” strategy from the ground up, similar as to last year’s models, then why the artificial limitation of consumer choice?  I could get the E7 and the N8 just fine here in Germany. Nokia thinks it can copy Apple’s hollow marketing strategy, but ultimately forgets it is still a European company (we’ll see for how long). Trying to treat us the same as US consumers will fail.

What a blatant fail. Consumers only need to see the N9 once to realize what a humbug this is. Why aren’t Nokia admitting the real facts here. The curved display was optimized for the Swipe interface in the MeeGo N9. It was the real purpose of it. And the colors! They’re suggesting Microsoft actually made changes to the UI for Nokia! Please Nokia you think we are so stupid? Even stupid people use Facebook and YouTube. Own up.

the marketing video is clearly inspired by the Apple video … but the content is miles way. It is full of marking FUD and inaccuracies. The Lumia did not get designed in 6 months. Are you mad woman? The design got it’s first release 6 months ago. All you guys did is jimmy a new OS onto an old phone design.

It is unbelievable that a VP would come out and say that rewards follow risks when the only risk Nokia took was to introduce an old phone design with a cut down set of features and try to pass it off as something innovative. Hum no offence but at least Apple was honest about the fact that the design is identical to their old model … get a clue Nokia.

I mean I had a mobile phone when no one in my estate had a mobile at all, I moved on to note books and laptops, as why have something less than that? but to sort of join in the tech age I have coming on Monday my new Lumia 800, and I’m looking forward to seeing what it has to offer, let the Iphonet’s have their day peddling how great their phone is, whilst every day I listen to everything bad about it, whilst I discover my new Lumia!!

the marketing video is clearly inspired by the Apple video … but the content is miles way.

Pity that Lumia 800 doesn’t have Bluetooth data transfer feature available :/

The fact that you have windows on a lumia really makes bluetooth a thing of the past! why bluetooth, when you can email what ever you want to whom ever you want ?!

I just got a message from my friend working at Nokia that every editor that writes a pro-Microsoft post gets 100 Euros and for every “like” they give to pro-Microsoft/Elop comments, they get 5 Euros.

    Now, I understand!

just like the others, I’m really confused with your latest videos & communications regarding the lumia 800. especially when it comes to design. particularly the curved display you’re telling here. you did them all already with N9, like Ashwin Saval said that it’s clearly from the design optimized for N9′s swipe gesture. see 5:41. how come you say it’s designed to integrate with WP7 now? 5:41 is totally N9! It’s a great video for those early adopters of Nokia, but for us it’s a total nonsense. I love the design, I love N9, I love lumia 800, or maybe roughly; N9 with WP7. I just don’t expect to see this overlapping communication.

I think Nokia did a big mistake in launching N9 before Lumia 800, if they have launched Lumia 800 first than the world would be more interested in New design with a New operating system, and secondly they have to launch it all over the world in same time. That’s how iPhone do

Lumia 800 must be launched in a size what Lumia 900 is released. or if Nokia is planning another set in 2012 with WMP, than please Put Dual Core in it with a better camera and than see how quick you will touch the 10 million sale mark
