Nokia Lumia and SkyDrive puts you in the cloud

Published by Adam Fraser on November 11, 2011

The cloud

The Nokia Lumia 800 comes with free access to Microsoft SkyDrive, a cloud-based vault for all your documents, photos, videos and music.

Why’s that a good thing? Well, there’s a few really big benefits.

Keeping your stuff here means you can access it from anywhere on any device via an Internet connection. For phone users, it’s especially valuable since you can store thousands of pictures without filling up your phone. Sharing is fully customizable – anything on your SkyDrive can be shared publically, with specific people or kept completely private.

You could also use Windows Live SkyDrive to back-up your phone content, so that even if you lose your handset, you’ll still have everything that was on it.

Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820

Our first Windows Phone 8 smartphones.

Be a part of it.

On the other side, SkyDrive is useful for work, as a place to upload Word, PowerPoint presentations or Excel spreadsheets. So you can be productive away from the office or at meetings and always have access to the documents you need.

To access SkyDrive you’ll need to have a Windows Live account, which takes only a few moments to create. Chances are, if you’ve ever used MSN, you’ll already have an account.

On your computer, point your browser to https://skydrive.live.com. If you already have a Windows Live login, enter that, otherwise you can sign up for one.

SkyDrive folders

Once you’re logged in, you’re in your very own online cloud-space. It’s here that you can begin to create your individual folders. There are some default ones to get you started. But you can create as many as you like and call them anything.

It’s from within the Web browser view that you can make changes to the permission of each folder, meaning you can allow selected people to view the contents of any of the folders.

By default, whenever you create a new folder, it’s set to private, only available to you. So there’s no need to worry about privacy or sharing things by mistake. You control who can see your content.

SkyDrive on Nokia Lumia 800

On the Nokia Lumia 800, you can find SkyDrive in the Office Hub as one of the Live Tiles or in the Applications list. Once you’ve pressed that icon you’re taken to your own SkyDrive where you’re offered a range of different options.

By gliding your finger from left to right across the screen you’ll come across the locations section, which is where you’ll find SkyDrive, a default My Documents folder along with any other folders you might’ve created. Here you can browse the content.

It’s super easy to upload photos or video. Once you’ve captured that beautiful sunset, or a lonely dog standing outside a store waiting for its owner to return, you can send the image straight to the SkyDrive, provided you have Internet access.

When you get back to your desk, you can access the image or video on your PC for editing or to look at again.

There’s also the option to have every image or video you take sent to the SkyDrive automatically, making it even easier to remember those important moments – and avoid having to remember to plug it in and synchronize every week or so.

Are you looking forward to cloud-storage with SkyDrive? How would you best use this service? Let us know using the comments below.

Will we get SkyDrive for Symbian Belle as well?

If not, get BullGuard Mobile Backup, it does the same thing.

I don’t think so, as SkyDrive isn’t a Nokia product. However, there is something called Microsoft Apps that are coming to Symbian users.

      • Jukka

        Microsoft® OneNote™ – rich note taking with images. Syncs with Microsoft® SkyDrive®.
so we can wait some functionality anyway…

Skydrive has api’s so no reason an app couldnt be done for Symbian

I didn’t know that, that’s good to know. So something for developers..?

          • http://www.garymoncrieff.co.uk garymoncrieff

Yeah but unfortantately I doubt any developer will take it on with the push to WP now.

I love WP but it’s kinda funny how developers are being courted to WP which will only weaken Symbian more, and be harder for it support you guys until WP gains a foothole in the market.

??? the point I was trying to make is there are still a few key apps missing from Symbian for example Audible and Kindle to name two. Nokia should be pushing hard to get these as well as pushing to get WP developers.

I will buy the Lumia as soon as I can, but looks like I might have to wait till the New Year to get it sim free at a reasonable price.

An app is not needed to access Skydrive for non WP devices.

Yeah you can access it through the browser but a native app is a better experience.

@Jukka…You don’t need Symbian Belle, or any specific version of any mobile OS to access Skydrive.  Anyone can access Skydrive from their mobile phones web browser – all you need is a Windows Live account.  I just accessed my Skydrive account on my N8, using the Opera Browser.

Sorry brother but Symbian is dead.. It should be clear by now, with Microsofts takeover of Nokia, that going forward WP7 is all you will get.

The good news is that Nokia is really standing out from the crowd.  No other phone can even come close to the price they are charging for a Compal reference design :(

I would rather prefer to use my mobile phone’s 16gb or 64gb memory in mass storage as usb pen drive device to store or fetch data than wasting my time in first uploading GBs of data in Sky drive and then download it from cloud again! waste of data bandwidth

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

Are you against cloud-services in general? Because they all require you to connect through a data connection of some sort. Most smartphones now come with WiFi functionality, so there’s no need to eat into your mobile data-allowance.

The good thing with SkyDrive is that you don’t have to connect your phone to the computer, or even have the phone anywhere near it. The two can be miles apart and you can still access the information you need.

Cloud storage is not new to Nokia users….Nokia already implemented it as ovi file sharing cloud service in 2008 and later in 2010 killed it with their both hands….same thing will happen to wp7 and its cloud storage service trust me.

@Cod3rror…Skydrive is not new either!  Skydrive was implemented in 2007, and you don’t need a Windows Phone device to use it.

Great point LWSJR, I forgot about access through the Web browser. You could connect to your SkyDrive through a friend’s phone’s browser to download something. Could be quite useful.

The bad thing about Skydrive-only access is you need a fast network, and the MS services must be up and running… On my existing Symbian phone, I don’t need either a computer or a  network to back up my photos. A MicroSD card is enough. It can be also used to swap photos and other documents with another person, without involving any other infrastructure or organizations. With complete privacy.
This is how it should be.

There is still one thing that I can’t understand about Nokia Lumia 800 and Skydrive:

Why Skydrive adds compression to your awesome 8MP Zeiss photos while you store them from the Nokia Lumia 800 to the cloud than when you look at what you expect to see everywhere as 8MP Zeiss photo you get as result a shame pixalted photo? (I haven’t tested myself this issue but this is what who get the phone in hands told me).
There is something wrong in this, isn’t it?
I guess why no one talks about this? Everyone scared about?
Microsoft and Nokia have to put the cloud integration a step ahead. Both can! Otherwise there is no reason why offering 25 GB of Skydrive for photos as shotted with phone because must be said: compressed from the phone whatever it is whatever kind of photocamera it plugs.

The most important feature for me would be to have my music on skydrive to access it on the phone.
