Nokia Lumia Messaging: text has evolved

Get the message on the Lumia 800

GLOBAL – Does anybody care how a message is delivered? No, they just want to read it and know who it comes from.

So if you send an SMS text message and the answer comes back via Facebook, it’s far better to read it in the same thread between you and the messenger.

I’m used to being forced to quit text messaging and load up Facebook every time an email lands, telling me someone just sent me a message on Facebook.

None of that on the Nokia Lumia 800. It’s all there in one simple inbox – text and picture messages and Windows Live and Facebook chats – all intertwined on threads between you and your People.

To start the Windows Phone 7.5’s Messaging app, just tap the tile, 2nd down from top left on your home screen.

Straightaway you see the Threads screen, a display of all your messages in conversations which include texts, Windows Live chats and Facebook Conversations.

Tap on a contact to open the thread. You can reply right there or create a new text message by tapping the plus sign at the bottom of the screen.

You can either type a name or number or hit the plus sign top right to select someone from the People Hub.

Then input your text using the virtual keyboard or voice, via the mic icon, but be sure to speak very clearly.

You can add pics via the paperclip icon at the bottom, if you want.

From here, you can also find out who’s online for a chat via Facebook or Windows Live Messenger, by swiping to the left or right.

Once you see how the Windows Phone 7.5’s Messaging app organizes your conversations, you wonder why nobody has designed service exactly like it before.

By making it so fast, efficient and seamless there’s no danger of you wanting to shoot the messenger, because you are hardly aware of who it is.

Once again, the Nokia Lumia 800 succeeds where others are still struggling.

Hi Laura, there isn’t a Nokia Lottery, it’s a scam created by some people up to no good. We’ve written about it before and you can find that story here: http://conversations.nokia.com/2011/01/20/nokia-lottery-scammers-still-out-there-beware/

Feel free to check it out and post any details you have about it on that post.

I really hope no one falls prey to such devious tactics.

there are other similar projects from microsoft, bbc, and a lot of others who have been promising nothing short of the moon. If you believe in snake oil salesmen, I’ve got a bridge to sell you :)

All good, but my HTC HD7 does all that. I understand this is a Nokia site, but there’s nothing specific or unique to the Nokia Lumia 800 is anything that was written above.

One of the weaknesses of using software available on other manufacturer’s phones – the software stops being a point of differentiation.

Of course, my N900 did a lot of what you write about above, two years ago. :)

It is the best Windows Phone I have ever seen, and I’ve looked at them all, both in terms of the industrial design and the extra software. Mix Radio, in particular, on the software side is amazing.

Agreed – the extra software in the Lumia does make a difference. But the article was about the text/messaging application. Not such a difference (from other WP7 phones).

And best…depends on the criteria being applied. The HD7 has a larger screen – which might matter to some. And others might like the windshield wipers that appear on the HTC Hub when it’s raining – like it is now. :)

The best without front camera? The title of this article should be ‘Messaging on WP 7.5′

        • APai

the best phone is subjective to individual needs. I dont have a need for front facing cam, so i can live without it, but I would rather live with meego

Yes, the Nokia N900 method of handling messaging threads from all sources was one of its strongest features. It is frustrating that it was largely ignored by the world. Maemo was so strong in so many ways. If only it had received more development and support from Nokia. I would still prefer to be using that OS on modern hardware rather than anything else.

All messaging in one thread means no privacy LOL….in just few seconds other persons can glance at Timmy’s lumia phone and would find out Timmy’s all secrets! then it will imply Nokia divorcing people

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

I suggest Timmy installs a PIN code. In fact, I suggest everyone does.

      • APai

true. because , threaded messaging has been before , so if this one has a problem, likely the others too will

  • N9

no skype, no gtalk, no sip. You can found all these nicely integrated in Nokia N9.

  • N9 64GB

I can already do this (and much more) with my Nokia N9. I also have front camera and twice the central memory and four times the disk memory compared to Lumia. Not going to change.

    • MobileStrongBOX

You are right! I also have N9 and is f***ing great!! I can choose from what service I want to see messages, contacts, notification. I can choose very easy, it is better than WP7 messaging system !!!

How can I send messages to contacts who show offline in my messenger list?  This is a normal feature, whereby, when they go online they receive the message.  I can only see people who are available in my list in the Lumia 800.  thank you.
