Nokia Drive adds amazing value to Lumia 800

Nokia Drive tile

LONDON, United Kingdom – Navigation is a key strength of the Nokia Lumia 800 so there’s no way I’m missing the last sat-nav software I used, loaded on my old phone.

Not only is Nokia Drive a good alternative to expensive apps and dedicated devices, but as with the versions on Symbian and MeeGo phones, I’m finding it easier to use.

For a start, the tile to activate it is much easier to hit than more fiddly icons on other phones.

And that’s important when you’re in a car. In fact, all the buttons are satisfyingly chunky so you can operate it at arm’s length in the car without having to break focus.

Nokia DriveParticularly impressive was the automatic zoom that moves in and out to show you the level of detail you need. The idea is that you don’t have to touch it once you’ve set your destination, so there’s no interruptions to your driving.

As with Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive only shows you the relevant details for the level of zoom you are at.

At low level zoom, you only get main roads named. And at high level, you get the names of tiny lanes appearing.

It means the screen is never cluttered and the beautiful vector maps are easy to read. And that’s got to be far safer than alternatives. Stations and car parks are also clearly displayed.

They’re also really quick to download and move around since they’re vectors rather than bitmaps.

It’s very simple to operate, with no scrolling through types of destination. You just input where you want to go on the set destination as an address or zip code and the voice guides you there. It really is that simple.

A great feature is that it remembers previous destinations, so you can easily get traffic updates on your regular commute.

I’d expect to pay at least £100, for a dedicated device giving this quality of sat-nav. But Nokia Drive is free on the Nokia Lumia 800.

All the details: Nokia Lumia 800

All about our stunning new smartphone.

The specs; the price; the facts

I recommend you try it for yourself, along with Nokia Maps.
It’s also very reliable and accurate. I haven’t been taken along a river bed or through a field once.

You can choose 2D or 3D display, night mode and satellite view. There’s also a good search history, allowing you to reinstate any previous destination easily.

Nokia Drive will also come preinstalled on Nokia Lumia 710, available in almost 50 languages and more than 100 countries. As on other Nokia smartphones, maps can be downloaded to the phone, saving on data costs.

Nokia Drive is also available for other Nokia smartphones with Symbian Belle, and for Nokia N9 which also support Nokia Car Mode and MirrorLink. Read more about our location-based apps on the Nokia Maps blog.

Agreed. For me, Nokia Maps is the best service when it comes to navigation and location-based activities.

One glaring omission from this post is that you still need a data connection for the Nokia Drive app to work (it won’t even launch without a data connection) even if the maps are already locally downloaded on your phone unlike the Symbian phones or the N9 where the Drive app functions offline. I find this to be a huge negative point, especially when I take my unlocked phone overseas and I want to use it as a GPS unit without buying data in that respective country.

Also for me it’s a great negative point the data connection requirement! I’m going to buy other products as one of the key advantage of Nokia smartphones has gone…

Lot’s of luck finding better products than Nokia Maps and Drive

  • http://twitter.com/fanel89 Stefan M.

Actually, that’s the absolute wrong way of looking at the issue at hand. There are plenty of offline nav apps for all platforms which are MUCH better than Nokia Drive. Sure they aren’t free but you didn’t mention in your post “finding better FREE products”. I’m not saying Nokia Maps is horrible but considering the Symbian/Meego versions function completely offline, it is a glaring omission. Personally, as it stands right now, I’d rather buy another smartphone (probably older and cheaper model) and pay for the offline nav app (even if it is for example a first-gen WP).

Very surprised by this author’s praise for Nokia Drive. Having used Nokia Maps for more than 2 years on previous Nokia [Symbian platform] smart phones, I was previously able to plan a route on my PC using Nokia/Ovi maps and then synchronise to my mobile. I could also use Nokia Maps in offline mode which was particularly useful overseas. It is no longer possible to save and/or sort routes as favourites. Also, when connected via Bluetooth in my car, voice directions do not work is I’m listening to the radio.

I find Nokia Drive to be a quantum leap BACKWARDS!

I’m not confused one little bit. I use Nokia Maps when I’m walking about and Nokia Drive when I’m in the car. I use Maps more, though.

The version of Nokia Maps available on the Lumia is nothing like the Nokia Maps available on previous Nokia smart phones.

Nokia drive works offline for browsing but won’t provide navigation. If you’re stuck in an area where with no data connection but GPS signal…whats the point with this useless piece of software. The could have easily added a walk feature but this Nokia and not Android or Apple…its expected.
