 Nokia Lumia 800 on sale

LONDON, United Kingdom – The Nokia Lumia 800 hit the shops in the UK today and Conversations was there to see the first phones sold.

At Westfield mall, Stratford City, leading UK phone seller The Carphone Warehouse was the first store to open its doors to us.

One satisfied customer Alexander Bernadine said: “It’s a very nice phone. It’s light and easy to use.”

Alexander saw the Nokia Lumia 800 for the first time in the shop today and got it free on a £26 a month contract with Orange.

“I’m going to get a blue headset with it,” he added, looking at the Monster headphones on display at the Nokia Arch where team member Simon Hall helped Alexander set up his phone.

“He’s delighted with it,” said Simon. “He said it’s a wicked phone.”

Earlier, Carphone Sales assistant Gordon Helies told Conversations he thought the new phones would do really well.

“I didn’t like Nokia until I tried this phone. I’ve been learning all about it and it really is a great phone,” he said.

“I think we are going to sell a lot of these.”

The flagship store in London’s East End, close to the 2012 Olympic stadium, has up to 10,000 visitors a week and is now the busiest Carphone Warehouse outlet in Britain.

Preorders for the Nokia Lumia 800 have been going very well. The phone has generated more buzz than any Nokia handset in recent times.

And top Lumia deals, including a free Xbox from UK service provider Orange, are attracting thousands of customers.

Nokia arch manageress Cherish Meade said yesterday: “There is a real buzz here today, we’re all very excited about the first sales. From reactions so far, we know a lot of people are going to buy this phone.”

    Good job, Nokia.

Clearly the people buying the phone disagree with you. They like the Nokia Lumia 800 just the way it is.

I doubt it.  I’m bored with iOS and Android is ugly.  This looks smooth and elegant by comparison.

I had an Android phone.  The base UI is crap and needs modded skins and launchers to look acceptable.  The fact that it has to be customised at all to make it even vaguely bearable means it’s rubbish.

“The fact that it has to be customised at all to make it even vaguely bearable means it’s rubbish.” thats the point…..in android or belle…..you can change look of your phone by installing different launchers or themes but for wp os….it is all about those ugly square tiles!….worst thing is you cant get rid of them

No they wouldn’t because the N9 is laggy and can’t even play high quality You Tube clips without jumping around.

It’s a fail that no-one but a few nerds cares about.

          • MaskedMarvel

I don’t know if Youtube is laggy on the N9. But you can’t even play Youtube videos on a Windows Mango phone, as Flash is not supported.

It’s expected the video won’t work because the hardware doesn’t support it.

          • http://aegisdesign.co.uk Shaun Murray

The hardware does support it. The N9 supports up to 720p baseline H.264 in hardware. You only really get any issues in high profile 720p+

Did you tried N9?? I have N9 and is playing youtube videos just great! An it can play them offline, too. This is great, I don’t know any phone to do that. So, I can download videos from YouTube on my PC and play them on my N9 on the go!! Very good!!!

          • http://aegisdesign.co.uk Shaun Murray

They play fine for me on my N9 – 720p H.264 works just fine. 1080p is a bit jerky but then you’d expect that – it’s jerky on my iMac even.

Have you actually tried an N9 or just repeating what you’ve read on the internet?

          • Anonymous

Nope.  No interest in a dead phone with a dead OS.  That’s why I don’t go into topics about it slagging it off.

I am not interested in a copy of N9. N9 which is 10 times better than 800.
We all want to see how many people got in the trap to buy the result of putting fire on Nokia platforms and forcing people in icy waters:

What if it does not work with the end-users? People are not stupid to fall for buggy, closed and jailed WP7.

N9 got indeed the crown in all the biggest mobile site around the world. But the king of smart-phones, the N9, was shot in the foot by some ex-Microsoft executive, and we know why. He bets all Nokia money on one limping horse named WP. WP who is slowing dying, no matter how much advertising they put into it. Because WP is closed and ugly.

Unlike some competitors, our phones go through 1000s of different outlets, so it’s really hard to track or measure in the short term, I’m afraid.

      • Iphonn9

if that’s the case, we will never hear this kind of news,

        like
“nokia windows phone sell millions in the first day of launching”

        • Trevor Davies

You obviously don’t follow tech news very closely. Nobody releases these kind of figures on Day One. Show me an example of another report  about another device launch with verified figures you somehow expect us to come up with for the Nokia Lumia 800.

    • http://aani.nokia.fi Heidi

Sales figures are material information, ie. information that could affect Nokia’s stock price. As a stock-listed company we have certain rules about disclosing information like this, and us lowly Conversations editors are not in the list of people who are allowed to disclose any new numbers! But we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we hear something official.

      • Jukka

it means you don’t have good news (or you just don’t want your stock to go up?)
Dropping stock with “burning platform memo” was just ok, I assume.
By the way what stock are we talking about, NOK or MSFT?

        • http://aani.nokia.fi Heidi

Media and consumer response has been great, so the first signs are certainly very positive! Check out a couple of examples here: http://conversations.nokia.com/2011/11/17/nokia-lumia-800-reviews-back-new-windows-phone/

Media and consumer response has been great, so the first signs are certainly very positive! Check out a couple of examples here: http://conversations.nokia.com/2011/11/17/nokia-lumia-800-reviews-back-new-windows-phone/

Nokia didn’t hype up a queue of people waiting to buy the Nokia Lumia 800. If you talk to people at the front of these queues, as I have done, you will often find they have theatrical agents. Or they have some other self-publicity agenda. We did go to a mall and talk to genuine Nokia customers though, and we reported that.

In the main photo I see Nokia Lumia 800 green, it will be possible to get that colour of phone? Maybe Yellow later?

Green? I can’t see a green Nokia Lumia 800 there. All I can see is a black one.

Ah, that one. That’s just a protective case he’s got on the phone. There is no green Nokia Lumia 800. Only black, cyan and magenta.

Windows phone is the best looking is out there, in not a fan that’s just the way it is. Its very smooth and although there arnt too many apps… There’s all the main ones and the apps there are a high quality. Xbox is nice, and its just user friendly. I chose my windows phone over android and an iPhone. All the people critisising it havnt used one, try it!

I think that Nokia phones all are junk. I tested Nokia Lumia phone and was not able to figure out how to navigate in the menus and even the camera is far too difficult to use. I would not buy this phone even though Nokia would give a free calls for 10 years. Lumia sucks.

An iFanBoy detected! I guess you’re too wasted by the Old-Fashioned iCon grid of the iJunks.

I’m waiting for the magenta version.  Would love to have brought it for the wife for Christmas, but Nokia have not mentioned when this colour variant will become available.  Hopefully it will be released this year.

Sad to see no marketing being done for Nokia N9. It’s pretty much selling on it’s  own and is either being bought by people who were following the project for some time or who who can test the meego and some other OEM’s wp7 side by side.
