Behind the scenes at the Salo factory – A Nokia Lumia 800 photo story

Published by Adam Fraser on November 18, 2011

SALO, Finland - This week, people across the globe are getting their first hands-on experience of the new Nokia Lumia 800 as it hits the stores. So far, stores and operators in France, Germany and the UK have been selling the Nokia Lumia 800 like hotcakes. We were given exclusive access to the factory in Salo for a sneak-peak of what goes on behind the scenes when launching a phone like the Nokia Lumia 800.

Row upon row of the Nokia Lumia 800 being produced, at various stages.

I thought Compal is making Lumia 800′s. Is it Compal and Salo both now or just Lumia 710 made by Compal?

I like the atmosphere is Salo…the workers look happy. Not like the maltreated ones in FOXCONN China chunning-out iphones.

Great story! I love the pic of the pile of boxes ready to ship. Here’s hoping to the Lumia 800 selling in the millions – it deserves to!! Good luck, Nokians. Now the waiting game here in the States continues. I really hope you guys can knock Android and iPhone off their smug pedestals. It’s SO boring over here!!  :)

Nokia Lumia is a sexy piece of kit. Cant wait to get my hands on one. Am in New York.

Me too! New York is a classy enough city to warrant something as cool as the Lumia 800, instead of all this Samsung/HTC/LG Android plastic crappola. NYC – let’s see some quality!!

You forgot to add that Nokia stops manufacturing phones in Finland early next year. Most of the people in the pictures will loose their jobs and remaining will just place phones in localized sales boxes.

Then again, who cares where generic hardware by Microsoft OEMs is made? All of it is made in Chinese sweat shops. Logical for this new Nokia to move into that direction as well.

But please do shamelessly take all the possible PR-propaganda out of manufacturing in Europe while you still can.

    • Anonymous

Well that has really been the case for years already. They put the parts together while most of the manufacturing will be made elsewhere. Also it’s around 250 that will lose jobs in Salo from the +1600 workers there now.

At least Nokia still has 4 factories in Europe. That’s more you can say from any of the other cell phone manufacturers.

      • Anonymous

No, it hasn’t been the case for years. They have still been manufacturing phones from components. They are now stopping the manufacturing all together completly. No more manufacturing. Only packaging of finished products.

The factory in Romania is being closed at the very moment, Salo and Hungary will have their role “redifined” in January/February, which is corporate newspeak for huge cutbacks. I don’t know what the 4th factory is, unless you mean Vertu factory in UK. Those 250 jobs were just the start. Most people will lose their early next year.

And this piece and the way Salo workers were used in Nokia World keynote are both completly tasteless, just like the whole Nokia is these days.

Im curious.. Are all Lumia 800′s made in Finland. if so, i am definently buying. Even willing to pay more for one that is. Does anyone know?

I wrote Nokia to ask for a confirmation on that. Cuz i want my next phone to come from a country near me. No more of that China stuff, its ridiculous… Which is also the reason i dont own one single apple product. Bring it Nokia! Tell me i can get a Scandinavian made phone… PLZZZZ

If build quality is your concern then I’ve heard that the quality of Nokia stuff made in China is 2nd to none.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=708677298 Alf Lenni Erlandsen

Its not build quality. I just dont wanna support exportation of labour and favouring slave regimes in countries like China that have no scrupples what so ever. Im tired of supporting this. Also its the reason why i never would buy an apple product: Why give apple more profit when they dont treat their workers well and when they dont seek the forefront when it comes to being environmentally conscious.

You lie they are closing factory in Romania okay and Romanian factory makes cheap s40 mobile devices not smart phones. Salo factory will remain operational and play major role. read the statements properly and do not create false news and rumours.
    u r really weird.

Just like I wrote two months ago. Not so “never-ending hive of activity”.

It was well known already at the time that most of these people would lose their jobs. It didn’t stop you from posting this sickening piece of filthiest kind of corporate propaganda.

Better get your malaria vaccinations ready. You are going to need those for that piece about 15 year old Vietnamese peasant girls labouring for pennies and making generic Microsoft products instead of sitting in school and getting a decent education.
