Nokia N9 software update v1.1 rolls out

Published by Adam Fraser on November 21, 2011

Three Nokia N9s

GLOBAL – This week, the Nokia N9 software update v1.1 has started to make its way to people’s smartphones, bringing new features and improvements. Some of you will have already received this update; others will receive it over the coming days or weeks. Here’s what’s improved in the latest 1.1 update.

Nokia N9 music controls

The standby screen will show you more of what’s important to you, such as charging and calendar notifications. Music controls have been added to the lock screen, making it easier to control what’s being played without having to navigate to the music player.

For photographers, extra filters have been added and now include: black & white, sepia, vivid, negative and solarize. So now you can be even more creative when trying to capture that perfect shot.

Instant NFC tag reading is now supported, supporting wide range of NFC tags. And Swype keyboard typing is available as part of the software, making messaging even easier. Also, the Twitter application now also supports image sharing.

Other updates also include:

  • Chinese language support.
  • More powerful multitasking with improved memory handling.
  • Faster Mail for Exchange synch, synchronizing only active folders.
  • Noise cancellation, reducing background noise so that callers can hear you better.
  • Swipe down to close apps easily; now on by default.
  • PLUS multiple improvements to the operating system.

If you’ve received the update or are still waiting for it, let us know what new features you’re enjoying or are looking forward to in the comments below.

I hope Twitter Photo Sharing uses Twitter’s official photo service instead of a 3rd party service like TwitPic.

I am a bit confused here about the timeline. I have PR1.1 already since at least two weeks on an unbranded N9?

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

I believe this is true. Most people won’t have had it yet, though.

Update PR1.1 is great. The small bug I notice is that when music player is running I cannot check the clock on the stand-by screen. There is music player controls instead of clock. It is nice to have both.
The swipe up->down for closing the app is a perfect idea. The GUI navigation experience is amazing. Because of specific of my work I am using Mango, Android, Symbian and MeeGo phones on daily basis. In comparison with others platforms the Swipe navigation is the best ever invention of mobile software engineers I even seen. Great work Nokia.

The clock is still on the standby screen, so before to see the lock screen, you actually see the clock, hence there is no need to see it again in the lock screen if music player is running…

I’m not waiting for update, I’m still waiting for a device! Update is coming out, but Nokia N9 still not arrived in Croatia, despite it’s announced it will be available in mid October. That’s very embarrassing, Nokia.

Even from these pictures you can see that MeeGo fits better in the phone’s hardware design, better than WP. Round UI components, not square ones.

Swype sideways to get Swype keyboard is a genius idea, never seen anything as slick and easy as that on any phone I’ve used before. Noise cancellation was there even before Pr1.1. Nokia engineers have done an excellent job with this update, well done, N9 is even better to use now. Hoping for timely updates for this great phone.

How many operators carry the N9 in Europe?
In Australia Vodafone has it on contract. Also in New Zeeland N9 is on contract.
Is it available on contract anywhere else (Singapore, China, Europe) ?

Tis on contract in many countries…
Singapore, several countries in the EU, can’t recall with China.
A dozen or so other countries around the world.
      Why do you ask?

Why is so hard 4 @nokia 2 release global Upd8 of #NokiaN9 ? the fact that 8s been rolling out almost a month now. They should learn from iOS5 when they fairly released their update. Meego is a better OS but worse support.

My N9 is even better now with PR1.1. Looking forward to PR1.2

     Wish list for PR1.2
    - Folders support
    - Univeral cut & paste
    - FM Radio with RDS
    - DLNA or port Nokia Play to to N9
    - Video Call for Skype

    • Anonymous

Folders and universal cut and paste are indeed coming in 1.2
As for Skype video calling, Nokia has no control over that. skype does and I really doubt they will make it now they are under Microsoft.

      • Anonymous

I think Microsoft should spread their services to as many platforms and devices as possible in order to stay relevant. In fact they should add Windows live support in n9 as well.

          Is it?
All movements of Nokia together with microsoft were favorable only to the WP.
Apparently there is a sabotage Nokia’s own (read Elop) compared to the N9 and Meego. Reason simple, the fact of ignore the products (Meego and N9).
So imagine that Microsoft will not spend any effort on their applications (MSN, Skype and integrations) for Meego.
Much will come from the community, as is already happening.
I really hope to be wrong.
I have the N9 is the best smartphone until now. The One.

The push notifications is better with this up? Cuz my phone doesn’t show to me the new e-mails. To see, I’ve to enter in the aplication and click in sync buttom.
    How can I solve this?

Maybe, you need change your settings.
      Eg.: Disable the economic mode.
      See: Setting -> Notification -> Notification -> E-mail.: Enable

i agree with most of the comments here, like having the universal cut/copy & past throw out the whole UI, using the front facing camera to take photos & making video calls on 3G network.. etc

but what i would like to add is that i would love to see the whole UI work in Landscape too. i think it annoying that the phones UI doesn’t work in Landscape!!
so i’d love to see that happen in the next update.
i also want to point out that the web browser was kinda a let down for me.
i want my phones browser to be able to handle flash based sites & HTML5 too.
and i really want the web browser to open sites in there full desktop
page by default.i really hope nokia listen to all the feedback in the comments & also to
Not kill meego, because i think this is an extraordinary OS, & if there is any OS that have a chance to overtake IOS place in the phone market, it will be meego.

    - top tools bar on sight while on landscape mode
    - possibility to select text in the browser
    - possibility to store text messages. Very important.

I hope some of these will be made for use. Thanks.

    hello !

    This N9 is a great phone !

    Some remarks :

    - improve roaming support, with mail for exchange the phone always try to connect and the battery life is reduced.
    - add vpn support (vpn / ipsec)
    - add more keyboards and languages (swiss french by example)

Still waiting – Virgin Mobile version in Australia. Checking via Navifirm, there do not seem to have been any additional variants released since Friday (5 days ago), and there are very few carrier branded versions released. When can we expect to see this? I am in desperate need of the WiFi fixes that I think went into PR 1.1.

    - You can do more: the multitasking can be more improved expecially when it try to refresh feed on the screen or in the applications.
    - The shortcuts when you hold the screen can be of 2 row and at least the possibility to change the shortcuts.
    - Is necessary the possibility to organize the icons in folders
    - You must support this the device as you are staying with Nokia WinPhone, because nokia n9 is better!

      Meltemi => Qt5 + SwipeUX + stripped-down Maemo6x.
Still a twinkle in Elop’s eye, may never get beyond that.
      Remains to be seen….

No company throws out what they can make money on.  The response to the N9 , I think, really suprised Elop and that’s why Meego is headed to the labs not the pasture.  Personally I think when we see the rollout of the Windows Apollo complete we will see more use of Meego/Maemo6x as another line of products.

“The response to the N9 , I think, really suprised Elop and that’s why Meego is headed to the labs not the pasture.”

In all the announcements round mid-Feb, it was made clear that meego would be heading to the “lab”.
Nothing to do with Elop being “surprised” by the N9′s reception, & changing his mind.

“Personally I think when we see the rollout of the Windows Apollo
complete we will see more use of Meego/Maemo6x as another line of
          products.”

          We’ll see, I have massive doubts…
But no one can see that far ahead, so lets wait till we get closer to WP8x.

    Thanks for an Update.

Better if we can have some of the followings

    - Can have close button like N900
    - or can we have more flexibility select which side swipe to close the application
    - Better if there is a way we can work with the phone after we disable the swipe functionality – may be like a N900 enable a main button. :)
    - Browser with tabs instead opening new app each time.

    Thanks User from Singapore.

The point of the N9 is its swipe interface. Disabling the swipe functionality, adding a main button and having a close button for apps defeats the purpose of the UI. The way the UI works right now is very intuitive and the above points you mentioned in regards to swipe will only move the UI backwards.

Flexibility for side swipe: there’s an app that allows you to select what swiping up/down/right/left should do

Folders: from what I heard, this feature is coming in the 1.2 update

Tab browsing: personally, I prefer the current N9 implementation of having a thumbnail for each page open but I guess tabs wouldn’t hurt. You can try using Fennec (Firefox for mobile) if you really insist on having tabs.

Yes I agree, but I felt uneasy when the
app is moved to multitasking view by mistake when I swipe from outside
of the screen especially while playing games.. :( wanna play like i m
really playing game. but… always a problem.. :(

Where in having disable/enable functionality also won’t hurt would increase the range of people.

If a game follows the SwipeUX guidelines, it locks swipe from the edge functionality.
There’s at least one game I know of that does that….
You have to pause the game 1st, and only then can you swipe it away.

I believe there are some games that don’t follow the guidelines.

Have been running version 1.1 few weeks. Overall performance got much much better especially on heavy multitasking.

    - I would like to see video calls for Skype
    - Gapless playback for media player is also high on my wish list
    - WiFi connection has been dropped few times for me, so some WiFI bugfixes for next version please.
    - It would be nice to have 2 next appointments from the calendar on the feed
    - Facebook and Twitter apps needs some love, both are bit slow to use. Twitter app got better after v.1.1 but it’s not perfect yet.

And most important thing for last. I want to buy new high end Linux phone from Nokia in the future. I don’t like WP (UI is ugly, it is missing features, did I say that UI is ugly?) and I’m almost 100% sure that I will never buy phone with WP OS inside. Make one flagship Linux phone every two years and I will stick with Nokia phones forever :-)

you can use proxy or VPN…. if your router can use a proxy or VPN function, find someone OZ VPN or proxy, set the router with that IP, and your phone would look like from OZ instead of USA.

Keep the Meego/ Maemo 6 OS alive and release a new phone with the system each year in all major markets. The swipe ui is a winner in my book. The update went very well and made a great phone even better!

    PS.
The new web-site design and functionality of Nokia conversations is very annoying.

    • Cycnus

Yeah, the new web site is annoying. Although, I’m already got used to this new layout, I really think the old organizational paradigm of article is better.

I wonder why nokia didn’t try to mimic the BBC new website. It’s looks like WP7 metro, but have better UX than this nokia conversations.

No update for my nokia yet, im with vodafone australia. when will i get the update.

Usually takes waaaaay longer when you’re with a carrier.
As you have to wait for them to approve the update etc.
Sometimes if the carrier’s really lazy, it never comes…
If you get sick of waiting you could looking into manually update/flashing yourself.

I am from USA.I recently bought Nokia N9.How to get the PR 1.1 update for my phone.Any luck??

    • Anonymous

Seen folks in the US claim they’ve received the OTA notice, & then updated.
Not sure why you haven’t…. is it a carrier branded N9?

If it is, you’ll want to look into manually updating.
Unless you’re prepared to wait, but you may/may-not be waiting forever.

There’s a couple of different approaches you can take.
For some pointers see the threads at talk dot maemo dot org.
OR forum dot meego dot com.

Still waiting for update, got a branded mobile, I’m from México.
could be great if music player support option for repeat just one song, another feature is be able to modify the stand-by screen brightness and change color I found useless install an app like “bedside” when could be a default option for standby screen, change to analog clock display in this screen would be interesting,
a SMS counter is needed and Would be very useful a “programed reset” in the counters, set up a especific day every month

    Hi all,

I’m trying to ascertain if the PR 1.1 update also includes support for the PBAP bluetooth protocol?  Been looking at the maemo and meego forums, but no answer there…

As I’m in the car for long periods of time and communicate frequently, this support is quite important to me.

    thnx for your feedback

File a bug report or enhancement request here:

Eventually they’ll spell out the exact nature of support.

From what I recall, it is working for some, & not for others.
But on-the-whole it doesn’t seem to be working very well.
I haven’t been following it all closely, as it’s not an interest, yet.

well I still don’t have 1.1, I live in the UK, and have a Mac computer which seems to mean I can’t use other solutions like Nokia Software Updater.

You don’t have visualization sw like Parallels or Fusion?

Sometimes there’s something in Windows, that doesn’t work as well in OSX.

Well, still nothing. When is this thing going to be available? Is it such a draw on your hardware to make it available to everyone yet? Seriously? Why isn’t it available yet? I prefer the old way of updating, when you choose to, like on my N8. I’m in Norway with Telenor.

      What are you taking about?
Anna took forever to reach Symbian phones…
And it “still” isn’t available on many Symbian phones around the world.
It took “way” longer than PR1.1 is taking to get to N9 users.

I mean that on my N8 and 5800 I could check which version I had, then get the update when i wanted it if one was available. But then I didn’t know when big updates were comming and I just updated when I noticed they were available, so not like now actually.

I have checked in “settings > applications > manage applications”, and it says everything is up to date, which it isn’t. I have searched for ways to update it manually, but found nothing, so if you’re assuming I haven’t, you’re wrong.

If there is a way, can you tell me?

        • Anonymous

I believe you just have to keep manually checking until it’s actually pushed out to you.
When it is pushed out to you, you will see it show ready for an OTA update.

Or you can do a manual update….
Got to everythingn9 *dot* com & search for the guide called:
“How to update to PR 1.1 on the Nokia N9″
There’s other permutations, but that’s a pretty good guide.

If you need further help after following that guide, post at TMO or FMC.
Or search for existing threads to post in, rather than starting another one.

      Also if it’s a locked/branded phone (i.e. it’s on a contract with your carrier).
You have to wait until the carrier’s ready to release it to you.
This can often add “very” lengthy delays….

I always by my phones off-contract/unlocked partly because of that.

If it’s locked & you dont want to wait, there’s plenty of ways to manually update.
      Just do some research…..

If you’d been following closely, you’d know it’s not likely that’ll  come with 1.2.
If we’re lucky it might finally come with 1.4…
Nokia doesn’t want the N9 to be competitive with the 900.

There’s a 3rd-party app that’ll be ready by the time 1.2′s released (roughly).
It’s called peregrine communicator, & looks pretty good.
Approach them & ask Qns, they’ll need beta testers very soon.

GOt problems with syncing my N9 calendar withNokia calendars

  • http://ssrikanth.blogspot.com Srikanth SESH

After OTA with latest PR1.1.1 (22.2011.44-2.333.13_PR_333) the WLAN problem started, doesn’t work for any internet related stuff. Also the email client, doesn’t sync properly with POP and SMTP,but only works with IMAP configuration. I’m currently using Yahoo, when I create a new profile, it downloads for first time & after that never!!!

Can this be addressed in PR1.2 scheduled to release. When’s PR1.2 expected OTA…

    • Anonymous

      Try a reinstall via NokiaSuite.
      Also search TMO & FMC…
If you can’t find any useful info, “then” post in those forums.
      Way smarter than posting here.

Is there any news about WhatsApp on N9???  Or running Android Apps on N9??  I bought this phone and they told me it could run Android Apps and smartly didn´t mentioned that WhatsApp wasnt running either so i would like some answers from the Developers to know if i keep it or sell it and buy a Smarterphone cause this one without Apps its kind of a Dummie

    • Anonymous

Nokia never said it’d run Android apps, NEVER.
That’s never been part of the sales pitch…

      Do some research at talk*maemo*org & forum*meego*com
Countless threads explaining why it’ll probably never happen.
A F/OSS community derived one eventually “maybe”.
But nothing from vendors like OpenACL or AlienDalvik.

There’s a Whatsapp alternative called eBuddyXMS.
Similar-sized user base, multi-platform (more so actually), same feature-set etc.
Very proactive with Beta testers too….

If those two things are your definition of it not being sophisticated enough.
Well, perhaps you are best-off selling-up & moving to iOS or Android.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ESKBDPQZM4MS7XI3WTGVX73OXM Sebastian

jalyst already gave you the answer. I also suggest that you use ebuddyXMS. It’s only beta so far (on N9), but it will be the first and only multiplatform messenger. You can even text from your computer! Plus it’s made by a company in a country where you can trust your datas to much more than Whatsapp where you don’t know if you phone number might end up at the FBI or CIA ;-)

    • Anonymous

There’s a FOSS alternative to AlienDalvik & OpenACL called IcedRobot.
If you’re community-minded you may want to offer your services.
They’ve made good progress, but they still have a long way to go.
The end goal is to have something that works like OpenACL.
i.e. the ability to ran Android apps as if they’re native…

I’d link to the relevant URLs but the filtering system on this site blows.
      So instead Google: “IcedRobot”

I think she asks if there is an app where you can use the front-camera.
@petranikol:disqus : There is a mirror app on Nokia Store, but that’s all.

Nokia should finally do something about that… What other company sells a phone whith a front camera but no support for it, what company sells a phone with FM-Radio but no software for it?

And for what reason is there still no P.R 1.1 in my country?? Why are all other phone companies so much faster?

          Regarding vid-chat read this thread:
          showthread.php?t=81043
          Add “talk*dot*maemo*dot*org” in front.
Post any further questions in there.

          Regarding FMRX/RDS read this thread:
          showthread.php?t=3902
          Add “forum*dot*meego*dot*com” in front.
Try to read the whole thread…
At the very least read the last 10-pages.
Once you have you’ll know the status of FMRX/RDS & FMTX.

Regarding no 1.1 in your country, who knows.
Different countries have different regulatory processes.
If it’s an unlocked/unbranded ph* you’ll get it quicker than a branded/locked ph.
Branded/locked phones are it the mercy of the carrier, it’ll take much longer, or you may never get it.

*i.e. you’re not in a contract with the telco.

How to facebook in NOKIA N9?
We have a wifi but i can’t open my facebook,i have a load to!

Try some 3rd-party Facebook clients, the one built-in isn’t very good.
Plus it sounds like you’re experiencing a bug that doesn’t always affect ‘only’ the Facebook client.
Apparently it’ll be fixed with the next major update: PR1.2.

      MohammadAG is releasing Sociality soon..*.
He can usually be found at the following forum:
      talk*dot*maemo*dot*org
There’s also fMobi & at least one other, but I forget it’s name.
      The 1st and 3rd one I mentioned are free…
But try them all, fMobi doesn’t cost that much.
It might be much cheaper in your country…

If you believe that, do you think that every game/app dev’d for Maemo6x appears on iOS?
      Of course not…..

        Dear Mr Jalyst,

In response to your email I would like to tell yuo that paying at nokia store isn always possible,in my case it wasnt. I bought my phone in the US because my line carrier doesnt sell latest NOKIA phones, so I bought unlocked and place my old SIM on it. Just for your information I tried dozens of times appling credit cards for paying such application ( including one card from bank of America USA) but never got this done. After several tries I decided to call NOKIA customer services and after many many waiting time they told me I wasnt able to buy because phone is in service in a country different where I bought the phone and NOKIA was not able to help me. I also send an email to software developer trying to get an alternative option of purchase but not answer is received. I you are in a situation like this where you need such application what should you do ? Now I expect you understand why I am looking thru. the ” green paths” to a simple purchasing action but still I havent solve and NOKIA is not able to help me……

Search talk[dot]maemo[dot]org for “developer mode” or enabling developer mode”.

That’ll get you terminal acess, then you can use the right cmd.
What you’ve pasted there doesn’t look like what he’s told you.

            Good luck.

Why? The main camera is far better…
There’s an app that enables you to use the volume + button as the shutter.
      Then you can take self-portraits….
The name of the app in the Nokia Store is: “Volume+ as Camera Button”

PR1.2 made it easier for 3rd-parties to use the FFC…
So there may be an app that lets users use the FFC to take pictures eventually.
But in the meantime the main camera’s far better anyway.
