It’s antenna man Sam

Lab is secret to Nokia's immaculate reception

Published by Trevor Davies on November 22, 2011

HELSINKI, Finland – Two floors below ground level at Nokia Research Center’s Ruoholahti HQ sits Sam. He’s very dedicated and doesn’t get out much.

Surrounded by walls of rubbery spikes worth €3,000 a square metre, the yellow-headed dummy sits inside a circle clutching his handset to his head in the anechoic (echo-free) chamber which eliminates any interference or stray signals.

He spins around so that the reception can be monitored from every angle.

I can’t resist asking Nokia antenna engineer Petri Sinisalo, who monitors the results in the control room, which is the best phone he has tested.

“N9,” he says straight away.

“What about the new Lumia?” I ask.

“I didn’t get to work on that one,” he says. “But I’m really looking forward to trying it.”

Good listener: Sam tests another phone

Does that testing also involve wireless lan? Because my N9′s wireless reception is pretty bad.

Both N9 and Lumia800 have same polycarbonet body but Lumia800 doesn’t support 3G 850 and 900 bands so N9 is currently best Nokia phone in terms of signal reception

    N9 and 800 is 2 different beast.

N9 using Nokia own chipset that have pentaband HSPA + quadband GSM,

Where 800 have qualcom chipset that only have quad HSPA + quad GSM.

    and…
guess who can make better chip???

Articles from Conversations by Nokia became pretty bland after they have announced the Nokia Lumia series. Is it just me? But I honestly feel like it. It’s not the same anymore.

all chip in smarphone is SOC (system on chip), so you can’t add band to any existing chip, it must designed from the ground up.

and nokia design their own penta band + quad band chip. it’s one of the best SOC solution for 2G + 3G + Wifi.

It’s even better than Qualcom chip.

That’s why Nokia signal quality is always the best, especially when compared to qualcom chip or iphone.

I don’t think that Nokia 800 Lumia will be a hit here in India. Because the first thing is it’s price is high compared to other phones in the market. In the same price you can buy a Samsung Galaxy S-2.

More ever the phone lacks the very basic features like -

    1) Hindi Language Support.

    2) No removable memory card for mass storage,

    3) No front camera.

    4) Bluetooth file transfer is not available.

    5) No option to connect phone to internet from your computer.

    6) No option to divert a call.

    7) Zune to PC connectivity is very limited. You can just transfer Music and Pictures.

8.) No option for backup/ restore.

    9) No option to sync contacts and messages between PC and mobile like we do with Nokia suite.

    10) No file system. So you can’t download any file from internet explorer to you phone. I have tried it but it only saves pictures. When you click on music then it just starts to play song in music player without downloading to your collection.

I’m using Lumia 800 since Nokia world event and it seems my series 40 phone does better job when you only want’s for very basic features like i have mentioned above.

Considering those points i think this is very ironic thing that still Nokia is going to hang on only a single smartphone OS which has something good but not best compared to it’s own and others products.

Can you still imagine that this will be a big hit here in India where Nokia is still most trusted mobile brand and the features I have mentioned above are very essential for everyone at such high price points. Otherwise people will complain about those after getting it and will loose their remaining faith in Nokia.

Despite the phone looks beautiful and works fast but it looks it’s meant for naive.

Oh come on….dont write essay about info which has been posted so many times……Remember that normal customers dont care about presence  of XYZ features or lack of ABC features….they do only care about smooth operating of phone and easy to use ui …..Lumia800 is somewhat perfect phone for normal users who only care about some essential social networking features and smooth operations

I think this gets to the heart of the argument about N9 and Lumia 800. You say this is a phone for “naive”. But in my experience most phone users want usability at a price that suits them. It’s very similar to the car market. People who understand cars on the same level that a lot of the guys who post here in favour of the N9 are people who like to know what is under the bonnet of the car they drive. Most phone users just want a phone that works really well and does all the things they want it to. We have news today of another update for the N9, so surely as long as support exists for anyone who has bought a Nokia phone, everyone should be happy.I personally want Nokia to continue to succeed. And if that means them producing the first People’s smartphone in the shape of the Lumia 800, that’s great news.

But this strategy not work here in India. Just look at the iPhone market for the same you will be surprised to see that highly overpriced products fails to attracts despite they are fast fluid and works smoothly.

You mean that all those who buy the 800 is because they lack of knowledge on why 800 is not the best devices they should get?

Even though the N950 is not for public, it clearly was not tested as its antenna is worst I have ever experienced on a phone.  No signal anywhere in my house and local area when all other phones have.

However having said this….Nokia do make the best antenna….I just wish they have not cut corners on the N950

Because i feel Nokia N9 is more simple than simpler…. because I can only change the wallpaper… no theme, no color change (my dad hate the blue background of SMS in N9).

    Dear Vikas and others,

Yes I wud beg to differ I have been a NOKIA user since I was teenager and I observe people around me and their phones and I think the stuffs u listed dont matter for 90 % yes 90 %.

1.why NOKIA lumia 800 will be hit is first and most important the industrial design it makes you stand out in millions. For any device its must.

    2. Nokia Brand strength and marketing aggressiveness.

    3. Nokia Drive supports turn by turn navigation in HIndi and that is more meaning ful for me.

    4. Nokia can add Hindi language font support no deal but NOKIA supports Hindi only on s40 mostly tell me N95, N96, N73, 6600, 3230 , N8 all big hits in India which one had hindi font, even ur galaxy doesn’t have. this langu gimmicks and ovi tools are for s40 bro.

    5. BT sharing is possible u can share songs and pics and contacts that it who shares any thing else with a BT other than video songs pics or contacts come on … dude

    6. Zune to PC is awesome i use zune on a daily basis from where u got that idea???

    7. Nokia will ofcourse come out with enhanced PC suite syncing and others come on its only 6 months the deal was signed and just admire wat they did there’s still plenty of time and nokia will do wonders.

    8. NOKIA with NOKIA MUSIC and DIVE has now a brilliant plan strategy that fully utilises the vast power of NOKIA’s services offering.
on N8 u have a player a NOKIA store client but with NOKIA music I just want to kiss the guy who came with the idea awesome offering awesome app man gig finder mix radio mp3 store integration its awesome. It just kicks ass of the competition.

9 windows Phone 7.5 gives a fresh UI that NOKIA needed after N97 debacle and NOKIA will capitalise on it.

    10. NOKIA can ask for that premium price which is Rs 28000 for lumia 800 which is justified and not over priced for a decent spec, awesome design, great OS, awesome camera, NOKIA mapping and music solutions and other nokia goodies.

    11. NOKIA updates for camera and battery are on their way so is the capacity for internet teethering and if I am not wrong its already there i think Clinton Jeff said the same in his tweet.

    12. u say no option to back up wats the 2 gigs of sky dive for boss???
device comes with 16 GB, u can restore device to factory settings and get contents synced in cloud all music all video.

    13. No front facing camera u are pretending as if india is USA even in USA ppl donot use video call feature in huge numbers its not a big issue here in india where 3G is yet to take off… hardly matters and then there is NOKIA lumia 9xx series to come.

    14. utalk abt expandable storage with 16 gigs onboard a few will complain

Finally NOKIA has always been abt great devices why thay failed at times was marketing where samsung will tell lies and rumours to sell their crap u know samsung products make me puke i can not simply stand samsung lg SE and all craps ….. for me and millions of indians mobile means NOKIA if we have big dollars we go for NOKIA if we have few dollars we go for NOKIA .

This time NOKIA marketing has also kicked in and I believe with a great device in NOKIA lumia 800 and a great price of Rs 28000/- its destined to be a smashing hit in india.

one more point do not compare symbian features with windows, symbian is feature rich no doubts all fail short includin ios android all
but windows phone will be developed by microsoft and nokia its only a young baby OS out there and still its fightin a good fight iOS too was a idiot when launced atleast mango is miles ahead of iOS.

Thanks all and sorry for such a big rant!!!

    8. NOKIA with NOKIA MUSIC and DIVE has now a brilliant plan strategy that fully utilises the vast power of NOKIA’s services offering.

well i think ur still teenager who doesn’t know anything about Indian mobile market. First this year not is not the most trusted brand in India and price of lumia 800 is too high. Today i went to a mobile shop in Noida sector -18 market, the shop owner is my friend , 2 years and 7 months back when i bought my Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic from him that time he was having 90 Nokia phones of total stock in the shop, now he’s have not more than 10-15%. when i ask him specifically about Nokia Lumia series, he told that one of is staff just got the training about nokia lumia series but he’s not so optimistic about the success of Nokia Lumia 800.

What I mean is, if you are happy with the N9 stick with it. Other people will like the Nokia Lumia 800. Many people worshipped the Lancia motor car. More people bought the VW Golf. People who bought the Lancia tended to be more motor enthusiasts than people who bought the Golf. Both were happy with their cars.

How many Indians are willing to pay € 3,00 for Angry Birds whereas on other platforms it costs less than € 1,00.
(nokia asks € 2,00 on symbian platform which is also ridiculous, iOS and android don’t even ask more than € 1,00)
€1,00= 69,974 Indian roepie. The microsoft platform costs alot of money for an enduser.A simple costumer would rather have an iphone (or an android for that matter) for one hundred more and save money in the long run than getting a cheap deal and be cheated in to buying expensive apps (and not even having all the apps for that matter).

     It’s a better investment.

Look at the big picture. People love to talk ecosystem (hate that word), well let’s talk. Talk isn’t cheap, apps aren’t either on the windows phone platform.

Hmmm. I’ve both an N9 and a C7. The C7 always gets better reception than my N9.

Here in the office I usually get no signal or 1 bar where my C7 gets 1-3 bars. Obviously that’s not a very scientific way of measuring signal but to me it’s meant I’ve missed calls on the N9 where they get through on the C7.

I hope the problem is a software problem if the antenna is as good as the Nokia engineer says it is.

    Hello justforthethirdone,

do u have any idea how popular NOKIA store is in india its a hit. Symbian rules in india and latest belle devices are selling well.

Look a device’s popularity can not be measured by angry bird that may be true in the US in india people are not crazy for such phony stuffs.
Howmany times do iphone pro people need to be reminded that iphone is the biggest flop in india.

wats popular in india is actually mp3 songs videos and games like nfs etc etc ………. i will tell u the actual price of angry birds i am sure it ofcourse doesn’t costs 69 X 2/3 INR- NO OFCOURSE NOT :)
India is a unique market the matrics u apply in US or UK do not apply to india. In india those who really love angry birds can download it in many versions some of which come for free i myself downloaded a free version on my Nokai N8. Interms of device NOKIA is god no one matches the NOKIA brand but due to coding complexity etc etc the ecosytem never had the fancy as with iOS but thats a thing of past with Qt SDK look at the quantum leap in apps for symbian and the download rates.
also the store offers thousands of S40 apps a great thing awesome.

more over u said ppl speak ecosystem, its diluting brand identity today ppl buy android not samsung or LG their brand has diluted. its abt who makes the best looking oiled and polished box :)

But even with windows phone NOKIA is unique u have to come to india met real indians not one shop of ur friend but many shops to understand wat this brand is in india even if u have a 32K INR samsung phone u will have a second NOKIA phone. android ios are app stages
NOKIA phones are wat u need powerful camera, amazing audio, great call quality, high speed connectivity, reliable build quality, affordable price, extensive netwok of care centers and a name u can trust NOKIA.

by the way FYI NOKIA LUMIA 800 will cost Rs 28,000 INR in india which we are happy and willing to pay. the prices might come down after a few months.

    Thanks,
    Prasenjit

Kris, hi. A SAR of 1.43 is not “very high”. All Nokia products operate within international exposure guidelines; the ICNIRP guidelines is 2.0 watts per kilogram. For phones operating below the guidelines, there is no scientific basis to suggest that a difference in SAR implies a difference in relative safety.

The World Health Organization’s factsheet states that “A large number of studies have been performed over the last two decades to assess whether mobile phones pose a potential health risk. To date, no adverse health effects have been established for mobile phone use.”

    Dear Prasenjit

no BT file transfer, no mass storage, no file manager, if you know so many things about Indian marketing then you should know that without these feature no phone will succeed in India and any price about 22k will be very high price for Lumia 800 in India. well i don’t like android, iJunk or any other brand, i always used nokia phones and now i m waiting for N8 successor. so i m waiting till MWC 2012 if nokia announce it, i’ll got for it otherwise 701 is there for me. i m hoping nokia will include BT file transfer, mass storage and file manager in their WP phone only then i can buy a Lumia phone otherwise NOOOOOOOOOOOO.

    Mark, thank you.
1.43 looks good in comparison to 2.0
however, if you take limits set by FCC (US) which is 1.6 , then 1.43 looks not so good.
When I compare to units from other manufacturers, most of them are under 1.0 Even Nokia 603 has SAR of 0.98
So, what is the reason that 700 performs this “bad” in comparison to others?

  • Anonymous

     Kris, hi.

The FCC and ICNIRP guidelines have different measurement methodologies, which is potentially confusing. ICNIRP’s limit is 2.0 watts/kg measured over 10 grams of tissue, FCC is 1.6 watts/kg over 1g of tissue, so you can’t compare the numbers under each.

Nokia products operate within whichever guidelines are applicable in each country. So, taking your example of the Nokia 700, the ICNIRP SAR is 1.43, the FCC SAR is 1.32.

As said above, there is no scientific basis to suggest that, for products operating under the guideline, differences in SAR imply differences in safety. SAR may very between products for a variety of reasons; form factor, construction materials, components, frequency bands used and so on, but it would be inaccurate to described this performance as “bad”.

Mark, thank You for explanations. Things are more clear for me now.
As for Nokia 700, I assume that small size of the unit affected the receiver/transmitter in a bad way. For example, if I compare it to other Nokia phones it has poor reception (let say I compare 2 units in the same place using same network operator). It’s not so efficient and needs to use more power to achieve acceptable signal level.

Kris, all phones operate at the lowest possible transmission power at any particular moment needed to maintain connection with a base station. This is different from the SAR value, which is measured at the maximum transmission power on all radios and all frequency bands.

Mark. Thank you for your comments.
If I will try to analyse how effective the transmitter in the phone is, let say I’ll take a battery capacity in mAh and divide it by talk-time in minutes (or seconds). It will give me a kind of  coefficient like how much energy this particular unit will use when calling. Will this (approximately) show how effective the phones transmitter / antenna is ?

    Kris, hi.

I suspect that the answer is not as simple as you suggest, though. There are a lot of processes in the phone that consume power that are not transmitting – for example receiving signals over FM or GPS, taking photos or video, playback of music, running apps etc.

However, as we’ve strayed from the original topic, the difference between FCC and ICNIRP exposure standards, I’m going to bow out of this and see if we have any engineers who want to address your question.

What I’m talking about is that empirical talk-time provided for the particular phone. I assume that, when you measure max talk-time, you turn off all other stuff like FM or GPS, even screen is turned off, I guess. So, in theory, battery capacity divided by max talk time should give us how effective this particular transmitter is. Off course, it’s just an approximation, but it can be used to compare units.

Kris, even if we assumed that the battery power consumption would be totally dictated by the power consumption of the RF transmitters of the device, this wouldn’t be so straight forward. The power consumed by the RF transmitters of the device is dictated by the time-averaged transmit power level of the device. For cellular 2G and 3G radio systems like GSM and WCDMA, the actual momentary power level is always adjusted to minimum needed to maintain the connection to basestation. Therefore, the max talk time is depended on how, where and when you use your device – it’s doesn’t really reflect the efficiency of the transmitter. Anssi Toropainen/Nokia CTO.

Then we come to question, how the maximum talk time is measured. Personally, I never managed to achieve close to any numbers of talk time / standby time you advertising for your phones. And I understand that. If measures made in ideal conditions in lab environment.
However, if we say that 2 different units tested in the same lab shows up different results, then we can, probably say, which one has better transmitter.
My assumption here is that max talk time is measured in lab environment, probably the same environment for all Nokia units. If we remove all that 2G/3G switching, changing basestations and so on.
Can we introduce some kind of _efficiency_ measure, based on how much energy the phone use per minit/second of pure (ideal) talk-time.
Will nokia beat others on this measure!?

    Nope!

There are far too many confounders which would make such an empitical “study” useless. Here some examples: Tx Power Level is set by the network – not chosen by the phone. The period between two location area updates is also given by the network. Even smallest deviations in positioning a phone on a table migth have a significant effect on the Tx power level asked by the base station.
Not sure what was the initial question, but ANY given SAR level of a phone is only a sign of compliance and not a criteria of quality.
It’s like passing underneath a bridge with a 2m high car: it doesn’t matter if the bridge has a clearance of 2,5m, 5m or 10m … BR

Again, I am trying to compare results from lab, compare 2 units in similar lab environment. Even if data is not precise, it makes some sense anyway.
