Stephen Elop wins prestigious award

LONDON, United Kingdom – Nokia CEO Stephen Elop was last night awarded Mobile Personality of the Year at the Know Your Mobile awards at Vanilla in London.

In a double win for Nokia’s new direction, Windows Phone 7 scooped the prize for Operating System of the Year.

The awards were decided by a panel comprised of Jonathan Morris, senior editor at Steel Media; Susi Weaser, freelance journalist; Harriet Rhodes, editor of dialaphone.co.uk; Comedian and host Steve Furst; and Know Your Mobile’s features editor Richard Goodwin.

Group editor Clare Hopping pronounced 2011 “a great year for mobile”. We’re inclined to agree, although we think 2012 could be even better!

Personaly I have just checked WP in a store and looks awfull to me : to much text flying around, white text on white images, the calendar is infantile, TIC TAC TOE style and the animations are too disturbing, can not actually see what the animation does!

that is not true. i don’t like this comment but I’m not deleting it. I especially don’t like your groundless insinuation. But if you want to expose yourself as yet another conspiracy theorist with ugly prejudices against Nokia, that’s your problem.

Doesn’t matter what MeeGo/Harmattan is. The point is N9 is the last of that kind of phone. The future is about Windows phones. Say what you want to, but WP7 is a great OS with amazing features when it comes to user experience and getting things done quickly.

    • Cycnus

Wait until you got 200-300 tiles (application) on Nokia 800 screen, and you will hate the phone so much because it’s blink2 all the time and it’s hard to find the apps you want.

(compared to a great looking icon on Nokia N9…. because picture/icon means a thousand word)

This Award is a big Joke! No-one is buying Nokia MS phones, Lumia 800 looks nice, but the os does not interest masses. Meego based phones wd be a huge succes for Nokia in the future.. and I bet they have to make the N10 someday soon cause MS OS wont sell well. I am a happy N9 owner in Finland and going to buy N10, otherwise N9 will be my last Nokia phone.

Nasty joke. Total absurd of the year 2011

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4C6HTA2K5ARCWZXCMTGODHSOQQ Jura

Check on discussions nokia europe com web side about battery problems of Lumia 800. My phone can last only 15 hours within regular use. This phone is mistake of nokia for now until new updates comming in January next year, hopefully. How this person could be a winner of anything?

    • Anonymous

what is your agenda? you say your phone can last “only 15 hours”. Which phone are you talking about? 15 hours is very good, depending on use, for a smart phone. I have tested some of the most praised phones on the planet that barely last 8 hours. You strike me as someone who just wants to spread propaganda against Nokia.

      • http://twitter.com/dabbu101 Dabbu

Try LG Optimus 3D, gives you an unbelievable 4 hours on full charge ;)

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4C6HTA2K5ARCWZXCMTGODHSOQQ Jura

I am talking about Nokia Lumia 800 phone. It is not good, definitely not good when I have to put my phone in to charger every 15 hours after receiving 30 min calls (summary), read and reply to few sms and use music player for 1 hour. I can use N8 with the same amount of activity for more than 3 days! Feel the difference.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

“patches incoming” would be good news, wouldn’t it?

As for the “analyst” story, his “analysis” is incorrect - http://in.reuters.com/article/2011/11/23/idINIndia-60686120111123.

    • http://twitter.com/htarhini Hassan Tarhini

try SGSII and it will be a nightmare … sometimes with no use at all it stands only 8 hours due to unstable background applications / services which you can’t stop at all … (waiting to get Lumia 900)

I love it man wats ur problem many ppl i find want 24 hrs music 24 hrs web 24 hrs wifi widgets all stuffs and then they say battery sud last 3 days are u nuts??? the more we go for a PC kind of experience we will have to sacrifice battery although companies like NOKIA will keep innovating in battery domain and anythin 15 hrs is awesome so if u want 3 days go get a s40 od s60 3rd edition

I have on my desk Lumia 800, N9 and N8. Phones runs on the same condition. receive during the day 15 sms (screen lights on to read them), reply to phone call for 30 minutes, play audio in headphones for 1 hour. Lumia last only 15 hours, N9 – 2.5 days, N8 – 3.5 days. What PC like performance are you talking about that I have to sacrifice battery? All 3 are smartphones, all 3 has same amount of abilities to make calls, make photos, play audio and video, browse internet. What has Lumia so special so it can last only 15 hours? I think it has just a software fail inside OS, hopefully it can be fixed on high level and come as an update soon. If this is a mistake of windows architecture that battery draining cannot be fixed so easily at all.

a few ppl have very biased out look just because u love meego does not mean NOKIA lumia 800 that runs mango OS does not excites masses rather its the opposite. windows phone 7.5 is a fresh UI and is really exciting masses.
its always gud to have choices mango and maemo 6 are two different excellent choices.

also plz note that N9 runs maemo 6 aka harmattan OS with swipe UI built on Qt  framework and is not meego. maemo is alive healhy at NOKIA alongwith Qt but meego is dead yes NOKIA has rightly done so . hence maemo and qt continues in NOKIA labs and stay tuned as the CEO said.

Finally getting bak to original topic congratulations !!! Mr. Stephen Elop and Team NOKIA who have delivered awesome results now its tym to work more harder with new confidence and bring back the might NOKIA to the greatness it so rightly deserves.

WP7.5 is a freash UI all right, but then it is UI ONLY! The Metro tiles are a hit or a miss things, then the second page of application listing is downright ugly!

There is nothing it can do for me that an Android or an iOS or Meego or even Bada cannot do.

yah u r right wp7.5 boring UI its like some small box only front and back buttons, but meego UI swipe we can play with it and enjy even small kid can control d mob.symbain anna luks old no health but if nokia supports more and renovate dan it proves usefull

i personally think symbain os must have dual core processor,gr8 camera like n8,1gb ram,1gb rom, n9 body,4-4.5 screen, drop down menu like belle, and most imp wen we swipe we will go to multitasking view.

if nokia include  my idea i think it gonna roXxXx

With do all respect to my favour Nokia,
CEO is horror for all of us (Symbian – MeeGo users)…
Man of the year because he brings MS OS to Nokia??
The most out to date OS??
The most ugly and without feature UI..??
    OR
-Because he brings the best by far OS (MeeGo) and he say’s that is the first and last phone (by Nokia) with it..??
-Because he’s the only one who speaks with disrespect and for ‘death’ to Symbian OS..??

I have to admit a certain surprise at the “Operating System of the Year” award for Windows Phone 7 – but awards are notoriously precarious. That said, iOS 5 is hardly the head-turner iOS once was, though will still sell well.

Android, in its newest incarnation, is acquiring impressive functionality and still is top dog.

No award will go to Symbian, no matter how capable it is (and it is – and is even pretty in its Belle incarnation) – Nokia has declared it’s not the direction in which it will be taking smartphones.

MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan (or Maemo 6), however capable and impressive its functionality and user experience may be, will not receive a UK-based award. The phone (and thus operating system) was not released in the UK.

Bada is unlikely to be making inroads in the UK.

This leaves Windows Phone 7. I’m not suggesting it won the award by default.  I suspect it is something to do with am operating system that steers a different path than iOS or Android (and has the likelihood of scaling in terms of numbers). So, the award might be, perhaps, styled the “best newcomer”.

But, then, I’m never (successfully) pretended to be a mobile guru. But I do have some experience with a wide range of phones and mobile operating systems.

I think that we should give the Nokia/Microsoft merger a chance.. Too many people that I have blogged with are too harsh… Yes it was a surprise when I heard the news, but we should give them the chance.  It is nice to hear that Nokia CEO and WIndows phone were awarded. Which means that the merger is working.
