Nokia brings down the hau5 with deadmau5

See our exclusive video of Lumia Live 4D video show which stunned London crowds

Published by Trevor Davies on November 29, 2011

Nokia Lumia Live, LONDON - An earie bass pulsed across the river Thames as thousands lined its banks to hear the deadmau5 come to life.

Finding a viewpoint from wherever they could, one group sitting on a row of  ‘Boris hire Bikes’ and others scrambling up a boat sculpture on the South side of the river, the atmosphere and anticipation was building at street level.

On the North side the deadmau5 moshers gathered to get as close to the mau5tro as they could, craning their necks up to get a first glimpse of his signature mask.

Many enjoyed a beer as they waited. And everyone was curious to see the performer who has built a big reputation in this city after recently selling out a 17,000-capacity arena here, which is virtually unheard of for a techno artist.

A roar went up as the music started and the projectors were kick-started, flashing images from the London Fire Brigade HQ on the south side of the river, five hundred yards or so away from the 400-foot Millbank Tower on the north bank.

An animation of a Terminator-stye 3D metal jigsaw began to form into the shape of a chromium plated sphere, finally it sprouted two giant rodent ears, and the mau5 was up there, way above the hau5.

Fans pumped the air. Others, unfamiliar with his brand of techno looked on in bewilderment. But everyone was engaged by the sheer spectacle.

In the early part of the set, the projectors showed action from the stage, but as it reached its climax, the Drive Production video took over the whole building, at first making it appear to wobble, then firing shapes out of it.

Tiles with eyes swiveled to reveal more eyes, cubes crumbled and crashed to the floor, jaw-dropping the crowd on the way down.

One stunning sequence showed the giant figure of a woman behind glass who bent down and peeped through a hole in the building.

“That is sick,” said one onlooker. Even the haters had to love this part of the set.

And hundreds of tweets praised the amazing free visual feast laid on by Nokia as the crowd captured it on their phones.

Now global readers, who didn’t catch the oversubscribed Facebook stream, can also see it on the official video. And we’ll have more amazing pictures tomorrow, so keep your eyes on our home page.

More about the mau5 that roared.

yes, that was a 3am, 15-hour day slip up. Good spot and thanks. Let me know what you think of our video.

The event was a bit of a dead squib as is this site. This sites navigation is all over the place – it’s very poor.

The promotion and this site should have been better co-ordinated. Streams not working. As a promotion what was the point of it?

    Nokia still making mistakes.

did you go to the event? The website is different. We’ve tested it on people and found that it suits the more adventurous, curious people we want to interact with. I’d be interested in your constructive criticism as to how we could improve it. But I can’t guarantee we’ll change it to make it like every other site. We like the difference.

The website is some sort of maze? The adventurous will dare venture in? If you want to attract the adventurous then why? You are missing out on the majority. Not to sound pedantic but the navigation and website should be both simple and clear – there are many examples of this.

Trying to be different for differents sake is a bad decision as there is no point to it. Lets be clear here you have a clear role to play you are not doing this on a whim or for free.

The purpose of this site is to inform, excite and educate but if this becomes difficult to the average person then they will simply skip it by.

All I need to mention is Edward Tufte and information design. If that name is not familiar to you then there is your problem. Competitors like Apple have far better understanding of their customers than Nokia. Nokia in an effort to remain relevant and should I say “cool” try loads of things and they end up just showing just how much they dont understand their customers. This website is a prime example.

The layout is confusing – you want to attract people who can buy high end phones well you need to message to be understood by as many people as possible.

In politics the budget report is layed out simply even though there is a great amount of detail available for those that want further data. The man in the street can understand when taxes go up but if that is obscured in some sort of clever way then all you end up doing is alienating your customers.

What is the lasting effect of the event? You do know deadmau5 did an event in an Apple store in 2009 and that he also uses an Iphone.

You find this site confusing . . . then don’t read it. You have strong views about how the site should look and even appear to know it’s main function but I don’t remember seeing you at our last briefing. You seem to want this site to look like another site. That makes no sense to me. If you find this one too confusing, go to the other site.

You wrote the above. I dont need to be at the last briefing to know what the main function of this site is. If the main fucntion is not apparent by the people reading this site then it’s a massive fail. There seems to be more noise than signal from this website.

You work for a PR company and yet you define what this site is about and then go on and then dismiss what you yourself have written – mixed signal or what.

In my post I never mentioned or implied I wanted this site to mimic or mirror any other site I simply said this site fails when it comes to a well thought design based on the principles of information design laid out by Tufte. It seems Tufte name is lost on you and therein lies the problem.

Thanks for the lectures. I hope you aren’t going to charge for them.

I thought one aim of this site was to converse with Nokia consumers both past, present and future. Fine you disagree with my points however your tone shows just how much it cuts to the truth. The brutal facts are that Nokia is losing marketplace and just as importantly mindshare.

Here’s a video outlining the aims of our new site which is designed by award-winner Mark Porter. http://www.markporter.com/about/
It is not trying to be different for the sake of being different. It has solid design principles behind it. As I say, we welcome constructive criticism. Please forgive me if you don’t like my tone. But, as an individual, I don’t like it when people quote authority figures at me, in this case Tufte, as if they are the only way. I think it’s important to have choices and diversity in life.
