Nokia N9: top 8 time-saving tips

Three Nokia N9s

PORTLAND, OR, United States – I’ve had the luxury of having a Nokia N9 in my pocket for the last two weeks. The button-less interface, known as Swipe, has taken a little getting used to, but once you’ve adapted to it, it’s hard to imagine going back to any other phone.

After a fair amount of usage, some of my Twitter friends have asked me about top tips for the Nokia N9. Here’s a list with descriptions and time-savers.

Don’t fumble with the power button: To quickly unlock the Nokia N9, don’t bother reaching for the power button on the right hand side of the phone. Instead, tap the screen twice, then swipe in any direction to unlock the phone. Fast, simple, easy.

Navigating between emails: In the email application, what happens if you are reading a message and you want to swipe from message to message, without having to go back to the main message window? To do this, from within a message, swipe left or right to go back and forth between messages. This is a real time saver when you’re scanning email.

Launch the camera application: The Nokia N9 has a few minimal buttons. With this, getting to the camera to quickly snap a photo is a challenge. However, use this tip to get around the picture snapping dilema. From the standby screen, swipe from the bottom up, revealing 4 launchers, including the camera. You can then snap photos or shoot video easily.

Turn Bluetooth on, fast: Got in your car and want to turn your Bluetooth on fast? First, unlock the Nokia N9, then, tap once on the bar at the top and a status bar slides down. Tap on the Bluetooth menu and you can easily turn on Bluetooth and pair the N9 with a device at your will.

Customize the quick launch bar: If you want to customize the apps that are in the quick launch bar, this is accessible via an application. By default, the phone application, messaging, camera and web browser are set by default. However, with the Shortcuts application, you can customize this useful menu.

Quickly quit applications from the running apps screen: if you do a long press on the running applications screen, you can rearrange the open apps and also quit applications with one button press with no swiping involved at all.

Hiding Twitter or Facebook news items in the notification screen: Do a long press on an item from the feed you want to hide and choose “Clear <feedname>” (for example “Clear Facebook”). This removes currently displayed feed items from the screen and makes it easier to see what’s new in your various feeds.

Fastest way to access your calendar: From any screen, swipe to the right to reveal the notifications bar. Then, click on the date in the upper left and your calendar application is launched. Alternatively, click on the temperature reading in the upper right and Accuweather is revealed.

What are your favorite shortcuts or timesavers for the Nokia N9?

My pro tip for using the swipe interface is to swipe always from bottom with your thumb, it is so much easier than swiping from the side.

“you can rearrange the open apps” well this is not happening with me !! are you sure about this ?I really liked the N9 a lot (although still waiting PR1.1 – ME region), and we need this swipe gesture on Lumia devices as well.
    1) swipe down to close a running app
    2) double tape to wake up the device
    3) notifications on the lock screen
hopefully Apollo will take us there.

For Bluetooth, you first have to enable ‘Always show Bluetooth in status menu’ under setting.

“you can rearrange the open apps” – doesn’t happen for me either. I don’t think it’s supposed to.
Perhaps Jason was getting confused with moving icons in the icon grid?

I got it couple of days back, yup u are right. there are bugs have to be fixed and hopefully PR1.1 will.
3 days in use, 2 restart until now and Nokia drive application not launching (solved by changing language).

No, it does not… I’m using an N9 right now.

it is a bit better but still a total mess

Using Firefox handles the page the best, but still…. just barely

please change the design, it’s worthless now even on a PC ;/

So we’ve both managed to have a conversation using this website using N9s. Does that not indicate that it does work just fine including with Nokia phones?

there is big diffrence with “working just fine” and fighting for.minutes to get the page to load properly, having to rotate between landscape and portrait mode back and forth and wanting to trow the phone into a brick wall just trying to write a simple reply

and twitter was the only reason i found the page in the first place because navigating the page is nearly impossible

strangly it worked.just fine in all my Nokia devices before the redesign. …

The new site works fine on my Nokia Lumia 800 too

  • http://kjmackey.blogspot.com KjM

I use the RSS reader on my N9 to pick up new articles here.

The page shows well in the reader – and, should I wish, opening the site using the browser also works “just fine”.

And the feed new entries are shown on my notifications screen – so I get to see them (more or less) as they come in.

Which, I suppose, is another time saver with the N9 – feeds delivered to the notifications screen.

actually, the imagination of that “tap tap swipe” gesture somehow made me think of morse code… and guess what, “. . -” actually turns out to be the code for “U” (like unlock)!

probably this is even intentional!? anyway it reminds reminds me of the good old “connecting people” morse code alarm tone… =D

I would not be surprised if this was true.

Love this phone, but can’t understand why they didn’t equip nokia link to allow download of your contacts. The N9 replaced my 6 year old treo 680, and although it has some major improvements, drawbacks if you ask me are:
    1. in nokia drive can’t toggle any of the fields so you only have distance and speed, should be able to change it to time of arrival etc.2. ability to change the color of the headers of the various menu’s so that they become easily recognizable in the standby screen. When you have more then four I find it difficult to differentiate between mails and messages ( both have blue headers, one light blue the other just blue, but when they become small it’s hard to differentiate)3. no option in the email application just to down load the headers to speed it up in case you live in a part of te world where internet speeds aren’t something to write home about. And most off all really hope someone is quickly coming out with an office editor to work on worksheets and documents, then it would be a true improvement on the treo 680 and Palm OS
