WhatsApp on Nokia Lumia 800

WhatsApp on Nokia Lumia 800

GLOBAL – The Nokia Lumia 800 is a powerhouse when it comes to keeping you up-to-date with social networks. While the messaging features on the Nokia Lumia 800 are already very good, here’s another way to let you know what’s going on with your circle of friends, WhatsApp is a cross-platform messenger that enables you to communicate in one simple way, free for the first year.

WhatsApp FREE for a year, $1.99 thereafter

Sending messages seems to be the preferred way of communicating between mobile phones these days. Anything that makes that process easier, quicker or even cheaper is obviously going to attract a lot of attention.

WhatsApp uses your 3G or WiFi connection to send and receive text messages, pictures, audio notes, video messages and your location to anybody else who has the app installed.

How is this different from the normal SMS service on all mobile phones? I actually asked the same question. What this app does is take your existing data plan or your phone’s WiFi to send and receive everything. This proves very useful if you’ve got a tariff that’s not bundled with hundreds of free text messages.

When it comes to setting up WhatsApp on your phone, it’s really simple. Download WhatsApp from MarketPlace right from your Nokia Lumia 800. Once downloaded, you’ll be asked to enter your phone number to set up and that’s it. WhatsApp registration ties itself to your phone number, so there’s no long winded creation of usernames. This also means that as far as connecting you to your friends, there’s no searching for usernames, either. It’s all really simple.

Once you’ve got the app installed, you’ll automatically be shown which of your friends are using the app as it hunts out your contacts list for phone numbers stored in its database.

All the details: Nokia Lumia 800

All about our stunning new smartphone.

The specs; the price; the facts

On the Nokia Lumia 800, WhatsApp sits peacefully, running without you even noticing it until somebody sends you something. The push notifications mean that you receive the message in an instant, even if you’re not directly in the app.

WhatsApp is a good addition to WP and its simple and effective. It’s main drawbacks are that it’s not as functional as the IOS and Android versions. Also it’s quite slow on resuming after you switch away from it – I suspect they have not optimised the fast resume available in the Mango Update.

    • http://twitter.com/htarhini Hassan Tarhini

WhatsApp is new to WP so we have to give those people enough time.
for sure it supports fast application switching otherwise the app will fail in marketplace.

Why not WhatsApp on all series 40 mobile rather than only qwerty phones?

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

That’s something you’ll have to ask the people who made WhatsApp.

      • http://vikas-patidar.myopenid.com/ Vikas Patidar

Awww…. I thought Nokia has special deal with them that’s why they are targeting only a few great devices to cut the royalties.

        • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

It’s down to the developer to develop for other platforms.

          • http://twitter.com/htarhini Hassan Tarhini

why Nokia and Microsoft don’t acquire WhatsApp the same way they did to Skype? (just an idea)

          • http://reinnovate.asia Kit Yeung

They can include that feature with Skype.

Just add phone number discovery and everything’s fine.

No real need. But Nokia could write one for all S40 phones like Apple has done with iMessenger. However if most people who use S40 probably dont have a data contract.

In India the situation is different and mostly Series 40 users are youngster’s and internet data plans are very cheap here.

For 1 to 4GB of fair data usage per month, operators costs only for 50 to 100 RS (1 to 2 USD). So most of them uses data on the day or month basis.

And as being from a village I’m surprised to see that in villages people has started using internet on their Nokia mobiles. YouTube and Facebook, Opera Mini are latest buzz and off-course Google does everything in your own local language.

So it would be a great benifit to capture those emerging markets.

Whatsapp is currently available for all S40 that is newer than Nokia C3-00

      • http://vikas-patidar.myopenid.com/ Vikas Patidar

I have Nokia C2-03 and nothing at all. The phone was just launched back in August. And off-course it’s newer than C3-00

        • Anonymous

I believe Whatsapp should work on that device. It’s just that whatsapp didn’t update their compatibility list. You can try to install Whatsapp using the X3-02 version.

          • http://vikas-patidar.myopenid.com/ Vikas Patidar

Nope, i tried this trick changing the User agent of browser and downloaded both JAD and JAR files and installed them but phone says app is not compatible and ask for delete app.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

I’ve had it running for several days now. I only charge my phone at the end of each night, as I did before installing it.
