Ovi Contacts website discontinued

Published by Ian Delaney on December 15, 2011

The Ovi Contacts website

GLOBAL – We will be discontinuing access to the Ovi Contacts website as of January 24, 2012. Contacts on your Nokia phone will not be affected, and you can continue syncing and backing up your data normally. In other words, you’ll still be able to use and back up your contacts on your Nokia phone: the only change will be that web access to your contacts on ovi.com will no longer be available.

We understand this is an inconvenience, but we are committed to helping you access your contacts whenever you need to, so you’ll be able to continue using the contacts on your device as normal.

First, if you are an Ovi Contacts user, you will have six weeks before the web service will be discontinued. But even after that date, you will still be able to easily export your synced Contacts data to a PC at any time.

Second, if you would like to continue using a web-based contacts service, here are the steps you need to follow so you can export your contacts to alternative services like Hotmail, Microsoft Outlook 2010, Yahoo! Mail, gMail or Apple Address Book (Lion OS):

  • Visit contactsui.ovi.com from your personal computer.
  • Login to your Ovi account.
  • Click the green button below the message text.
  • contacts export
  • Save the file to your local drive (take a note of the folder you put it in).
  • Click on the file to review and access your data file
  • Your contact data is in .csv format.
  • Once you have selected an alternate contact service, follow their import instructions.
  • When you asked to select a file for import, select to your Ovi Contact data file.
  • Further information on this transition is available on our support pages

Why this change? This was a business decision to help us focusing on our core service offerings with the new business unit Location & Commerce, established in July 2011 at the center of our revised services strategy. Thank you for using Ovi Contacts on the web. We look forward to bringing you new and exciting services from Nokia in the future so check back here periodically for more news. And feel free to provide your feedback on what you would like to see from Nokia in the comments below.

Further information on Support pages -link doesn’t work… Sad to hear this news. I guess I start to use gmail-contacts.

How can I export my N9s calender to gmail also?

the link does work for me and others… Please try now, are you still getting any error?
If you want to use contacts and calendar sync provided by Google, I would suggest you to use their Exchange server solution. It works perfectly on my Nokia N9.

Why is are you guys at Nokia discontinuing Ovi Contacts web access?!

I use it very often and it’s so useful when adding phone numbers/photos/ and such entries on the web. The thing is i use a Mac & then there’s no Nokia Suite for iMac, that’s when this web access comes to the rescue..

I hope you guys bring back Contacts web services soon..

    • Cycnus

I use Linux, that’s why I use the web interface :(….

      • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

I’m not a Linux user myself, but I’m sure there is a SyncML solution for it. Otherwise you can use any other service like Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo! to sync your contacts also with your computer.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

      Hi @twitter-18354369:disqus,
thanks for your support, however, closing the Ovi Contacts webiste helps us focusing on our core service offerings, e.g. Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive and all the other location based services I’m sure you love too.
You can use Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo! and others to edit your contacts online or on your computer.

  • http://www.welzl.info/ Oskar

So the services you mention (Hotmail, Yahoo!, gmail,…) support SyncML? Otherwise, how could they replace Ovi?

It’s funny how all things that diferenciate Nokia’s users are gone. It were very usefull to connect in to Ovi’s portal, that could be Nokia’s portal, whatever, and have there all you needed, calendar, contacts, music, app store… we were special. What we are now, same like others. Who knows Nokia’s people don’t get to transfom us just like Apple’s  kind people . Arghhh

So disappointed with NOKIA, honestly i don’t trust any other service available. I use so many different devices and keep changing my mobile every 6 months all from nokia. Have used C7, E7, 701, N8, currently using N9. Every time i log in to my Ovi/Nokia account all my contacts get downloaded. I dont need to so anything, this is such a disappointment. I feel like Nokia is not connecting people anymore as every service is important. gutted :-(

Ovi, a great concept, failed execution.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000307766844 Kaizer Allen

It’s really obvious what the Trojan Horse is trying to do. I feel really sorry about Nokia that they have to fully embrace the dark side. Somebody really is removing all the assets and features, and reasons to buy a Symbian/MeeGo device. One point of using Symbian is the Ovi service, but now it’s slowly crawling its way to the chopping block, one-by-one.

It’s like, “I tried destroying Symbian and MeeGo’s reputation. And it’s still successful? Dammit, be ready Nokia 600, you’re going to be cancelled.” Then the 600 was cancelled.

“Ah, these people are going to get the 603 and the N9 instead of Lumia! Let me discontinue the Ovi Contacts.” Then, the Ovi Contacts is getting discontinued.

Don’t lie! It’s obvious. What’s left of Nokia? Microsoft? In the next few years, or even months, who knows what’s it gonna be called, Nokiasoft, Microsoft-Nokia or whatever goes through your mind.

      Shame.

Anyway, the failure of Ovi is not because of Elop anyway. It’s their service implementation. The integration between service is really bad and very inconsistent across site and phone.

      • http://twitter.com/hmmJD1 JD!

Very well said… No stone unturned to make Symbian failure… But it is still selling!

Soon we won´t have to bother with Nokia at all if one is to believe the information of Eldar (I know this guy is hated among Nok fans…).

But if he´s right, the Nokia we like(d) will be gone by mid 2012..

@ Ovi Contacts: I found that this WAS one of the most helpful features…

Ah, so syncing should still work? I didn’t understand that from the way the article is written. (You flooded us with bad news so much that I always expect the worst.)
Google-based services are not an option (I would use Android if they were), but if I can still use Ovi as a hub for all of my SyncML capable devices, that’s just fine.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Yes, syncing will work. Only the website is not going to be available anymore.
I’m sorry this wasn’t clear in the post…

I found Ovi Contacts very useful as well as the Ovi calendar. Now the Trojan has decided to rid Nokia of this fantastic service along with the contacts. Next on the firing line is the Ovi Mail which I use quite a lot. When they announced that the Ovi name would be axed. It was said that only the Ovi name will be removed and nothing else will change. What a lie when the Calendar was axed and now the contacts.

And i guess i should not recommend another Nokia phone to any of my friends or family…”never in the recent future”.

    Thanks Nokia.

I’ve been a fan and loyal customer since the very beginning (the VERY VERY beginning).

The Ovi Contacts and Calendar Sync was one of the things one could brag out loud. It was a unique user experience. Not anymore.

Today was the day I switched to Android.

This is a sad sad day for Nokia. Farewell my dear.

  • http://twitter.com/chorathmy Prakash Arumugam

As I was a diehard fan of Nokia this is a bad news to me. First heart break when Ovi Calendar was discontinued. Few weeks ago it was so hard for me to even think about switching to Android. But today Nokia help me to make the final decision. Thank you Nokia/Ovi and bye bye…

  • http://www.facebook.com/gra1m666 Graham Martin

What sort of notice period is this for the withdrawal of a service? After much research I bought a Nokia phone for my ageing mother-in-law precisely because I would be able to help her manage her contacts list using Ovi Contacts. She is quite arthritic and scrolling down the contacts list and pressing the call button is about as much as she can manage. Now I am expected to go to the trouble of finding a SyncML provider and setting everything up again. That’s another black mark for you Nokia.
