Nokia US President Chris Weber: Why Lumia’s a hit

Chief explains why the 710 is right for America and hints: you ain't seen nothing yet

PORTLAND, OR, United States – I got a few minutes with Chris Weber, President, Nokia North America, after the smartphone sales announcement last Wednesday. Without further ado, here’s what went down…

Chris, what excites you particularly about the Nokia Lumia 710 coming to the US on T-Mobile?

Chris WeberFirst of all, this is a world-class smartphone that is aimed at converting current feature-phone owners over to the exciting world of smartphone ownership. Our numbers show that more than 150 million Americans don’t have smartphones currently. Many are on the fence because of high phone costs or high monthly plan costs.

The Lumia 710, with T-Mobile, will cost only $49 and monthly plans will cost around $50 per month.

What sets the 710 apart from the competition?

The Lumia 710 has a great hardware offering with a 1.4 Ghz SnapDragon processor, a color-popping ClearBlack display, and Nokia’s exclusive Nokia Drive, which offers great point-to-navigation so you can leave your GPS behind when traveling. Not to mention, you get Nokia’s amazing industrial design all backed by the amazing usability of Windows Phone.

This is the first look for Nokia fans in the US at Windows Phone – what’s cool about it?

Windows Phone is amazingly fast and usable right out of box. Because Windows Phone integrates popular social networks like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter – users can easily sign in and utilize these without installing apps for them.

It’s known that first-time smartphone owners hate setting up their devices and installing loads of apps just to get started on their networks of choice. On Windows Phone, you do a simple set up process and you’re good to go.

My favorite uses for Windows Phone are the People Hub, Live Tiles and the amazing Open Table integration that helps you find reservations all within the Local Scout utility – this is very cool.

Tell me more about the custom offerings for the Lumia phones, specifically Nokia Drive and ESPN – what can we look forward to?

Nokia Drive and ESPN will come pre-loaded on the phones at purchase. And Nokia Maps is available as a download. Rest assured these are huge for us and we see a lot of potential. There will be exciting announcement and additions in the near future, but I can’t say more now.

As for ESPN, our partnership with them has yielded unique experiences and custom content to the Nokia Lumia 710. Again, we have some awesome features that sports fans will just eat up coming in the near future, we are iterating fast and news will be coming in the coming months.

So, this is the start of a set of Nokia phones, can you elaborate?

I can say that we have been talking to a number of carriers and we’ve been astounded at their overwhelming support. We will be launching more phones on other carriers. The Lumia 710 is the start of a portfolio of products aimed at the United States.

We like to call our Windows Phone Portfolio rollout “rolling thunder”. What this means is that we will have numerous announcements spread throughout the coming months that will offer something for everyone.  In our view, this is a marathon, not  a sprint, and we anticipate being a major player in the US market by this time next year.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed! I hope this phone gets the recognition and the sales that it deserves. I’m a Symbian fan, but I can see Nokia’s efforts to win back their consumers. My next phone would be Windows Phone, just to give it a try! Good luck everyone this coming 2012!

What do your expect him to say duh. The only way this will sell in USA is with cutting edge specs and killer hardware. The Lumia 710 is just the Samsung Focus.

interesting to see how it performs vs the  HTC radar which seems to me to have a similar spec sheet and target audience.  What T-Mobile lacks now is a higher end Windows Phone, especially with retirement of HD7.  As A t-Mo customer, i’d love to see a Nokia Windows Phone there with 16GB+ memory, 8MP+ camera and approx 4″ screen.  And if Nokia can sort it so Windows phone can make use of Amoled screens with clock/notifications always on, add NFC, TV out, and FM transmitter, that becomes a very nice option indeed – Oh, and sort out that multitasking view – show them an N9/N900 (does anything do multitasking UI better than these two)

I all seriousness, I hope there will be good Windows Phone and Nokia options on all the carriers, but (certainly in it’s present state) I don’t think Nokia Drive/Music/ESPN is a big enough difference to separate Nokia from it’s competition in vs other Windows Phones.  HTC Titan and Radar are very well built, Samsungs also have excellent Amoled screens.  I see it important that Nokia has at least 1 high and 1 mid/low end device on T-mo, sprint, AT&T and Verizon and than Nokia can offer something on each of these to differentiate from the other WP7 devices.

I guess the plan is to launch the high end WP7 devices on at&t and Verizon while Tmobile customers get the low end one. I can see this working out for the other two carriers but on Tmo the 710 is going to sink in the sea of android devices. Not a good move for a struggling OEM, struggling carrier and a struggling OS.

    Commercial Suggestion (my idea)

Here’s a suggestion Nokia, so listen good. Since you have that gorilla glass have a phone dropping commercial where an Apple user bumps into a Nokia Windows Phone user.

Apple phone shatters but it happens in front of an AT&T store. Apple user gets a new Nokia, and the Nokia user feels nice and foots the bill.

That was amusing read. Funny man this Weber, because he can’t be serious with that stuff.

And “rolling thunder”…Seriously?! Oh dear lord… One can already hear the wheels starting to come off. Year 2012 will be the year Nokia died.

I agree, it has a potential.
But how can it be “a hit” when it is “expected to be available on January 11, 2012″.
Does Chris Weber has his own private timetravel machine?

For one more time i must say this,
Nokia 603 (who is the same with 710) must have the same specs as: 3,7″ display, 5MP AUTOfocus with led flash..,but it’s not..!!

The forthcoming Symbian device (803 right?) must be at least 3,7″ display, autofocus camera and dual led or xenon flash..

And please think the chance to release a Symbian phone with the body of N9..

For the end i like to wish happy holidays and Xmass to all..!!

Different people, – different kind of needs.
For me, 3,5″ is too big, I’d like 3,2″
So, the best is to have different sizes anyway, such as each will get its own.

I don’t say that all phones must be small. But I don’t like the tendency that all phones become bigger and bigger. Freedom of choice, you know…

5Mp AF could be good. I actually accepted EDoF mainly because I have no choice (with Nokia/Symbian).
Dual led is appreciated. Xenon is not so good for phone, because you simply can’t use it as a flashlight.

    Anyway….
As a nokian, and wish nokia to succeed, I really hope nokia try every possible way of advertisement…. yours also :)

but as a real nokian, I also don’t want nokia die just because using all the money on advertising on something didn’t sell really well. I read that only 2% of nokian considered buy a Nokia WP7 devices in London… :(

    So,
I’m gonna get back into silent mode, and watch and learn.

I agree… Android is sold due to pure volume alone. When I go into Verizon all I see is Droid phones. Probability alone indicates someone will buy Droid due to pure saturation. Its not because the Droid is a bad or good phone, its just there are few choices.

Droid is NOT my cup of tea, but I am not going to trash them either. I own an iPhone 4, but once the higher end Lumia hits the streets I am going back to Windows Phone.

We need a HIGH END WP to represent the platform. I personally can afford to drop 800 dollars on a phone, so I want higher end hardware. The only reason I bought an iPhone was the previous Windows Mobile devices couldn’t compare.

Now I am OK with WP7 (see room for improvement). Since Microsoft and Nokia seem committed I plan to pick up their flagship phone, but they better come dressed to impress so to speak, otherwise it hurts their plans.

Nokia, you guy’s need to bring bleeding edge devices into the U.S. because we desire the best. Agreed, some items like dual core phones aren’t optimized, but the average JOE does not understand that issue.

Once they hear dual core, dual camera, mega pixel XYZ, and looks sexy they jump on it and talk trash to their friends. Many of us on forums are technical, but the majority of phone buyers tend to be sheep. They follow the masses, and if their spending money, they buy what impresses.

Droid has advertising that impresses. Make your advertising blow us away, or forget about selling in the U.S. market.

Volume of devices is clearly important as well. Also, consider making it mandatory for LIVE demo devices. Too many kiosks have dumb devices, and that’s just a bad idea IMHO… Would never buy a phone I didn’t see working.

My two cents for what they are worth.

  • Cycnus

    Hi Kris,

What I like from 3.2″ devices like Nokia 700 is their lightness. I really hope that nokia would introduce 3.5″ and 4″ that were only around 75-100 gram.

3,2 is enough for my usage. Calling, texting, taking pictures, sending pictures.
The size is important, don’t need to be huge. N8, N9 are definitely too big for me. Nokia 600 was perfect. Size does matter.

If you want to sell in the US you need to bring competitive hardware.  These puny, underpowered devices are not going to cut it! I currently have a 4.3″ display and I want something BIGGER!  The HTC TITAN has a nice sized display and an FFC but still underpowered.  I pay a premium price for 5 data lines on T-Mobile now I want a Windows Phone that will give me the Maximum Speed on their 42Mbps HSPA+.  Yes LTE will be nice for AT&T and VZW sometime in 2013…  But T-Mobile has SUPERFAST 4G HERE AND NOW!  No need to wait!
