2011 – what a ride!

Published by Heidi Lemmetyinen on December 23, 2011

ESPOO, Finland – Oh boy, what a year it has been for Nokia! Those of you who have been following us for a long time know exactly what I’m talking about, so I won’t bore you with details.

When you work in Communications, you obsessively follow what the media are saying about your company. At times, that has been about as much fun as stabbing yourself in the liver with a sharp object. The great thing is that towards the end of the year things really started improving, and now we can finally see the fruits of our labour.

Here, I am of course talking about the climactic point with Nokia World and the Lumia launches. The reception of our new range of Windows Phones smartphones has been really positive.

We at Nokia are thrilled, and we can’t wait to tell you what we have in store for 2012. What we have showed you until now is just the beginning!

The year in highlights

For me personally, the year 2011 held a couple of highlights. The first one of them was the Nokia N9 launch in Singapore in June. It was simply great to launch a product that everyone loved so much.

The second highlight was of course Nokia World in London in October. Bringing the Lumia smartphones to the market in just eight months was a tremendous achievement. When I first tried out my Nokia Lumia 800 I breathed a huge sigh of relief: the phone was everything I had hoped for it to be, and I knew that was going to make my job a heck of a lot easier going forward.

Product-wise, Nokia World was a huge success, but it also nearly caused me a heart-attack – we had just launched the new Conversations site, and when we made the Lumia announcement we had such a massive spike on the visitor numbers that our servers crashed and the site was down for a couple of hours.

While a large number of readers is certainly a positive problem to have, we’ve learned from it and carried out some extensive testing to prevent the same thing from happening again at CES at the beginning of January.

And onwards to 2012

After Nokia World, I got the opportunity to start leading Nokia Conversations. As a result of that the last couple of months have been really hectic, trying to learn the ropes.  I quickly found out that our readers are very passionate about Nokia and keen to voice their opinions.

This blog is a priceless channel for getting immediate consumer feedback and I thank you all for being so active in telling us what you think.

As a token of my gratitude, I will now give away some free stuff! Please tell us what have been your own highlights in 2011 in the comments below. They can be Nokia or mobility related, or something entirely personal – the choice is yours!

Three of the nicest comments (based on my own, entirely biased opinion!) will get a parcel containing a Nokia-branded backpack, lanyard, mobile pouch, cap and an Angry Birds keyring.

Remember to submit your email address with your comment, so we’ll know how to contact you (it won’t be displayed on the site). I’ll be going on holiday after today, so I’ll inform the winners and send the presents after New Year.

Finally, I hope you will all have wonderful holidays before the year 2012 kicks in! Switch off your computers, tablets and mobile phones and spend some quality time with your loved ones.

Hyvää joulua! Happy Holidays!

While I love my Nokia E7,N9,Nokia Play 360(thanks for bringing music back into my life),Nokia 950i and ordered the 710, the best thing about Nokia this year was the expanse of Nokia blogs and their bringing together people from around the globe to communicate with each other about our sameness.  Whether we wear East, West, North or South, we all respond to Nokia as the juman race.  Sharing, helping, supporting each other in our love of our Nokia lives.

Thank you, Nokia Conversations, MyNokiaBlog,Nokia Connects,Nokia News and the rest for your work and help for us all in 2011.  We all look forward to our global family meetings in 2012.

Everyday I am taking snaps of my family, pictures of nature, various scenes, all with my N8. It is my one and only device. I am a stisfied costumer. For many years more to come! Happy new year Nokia!

2011 has been evolutionary year for a nokia fan like me! I bought C7 in January and felt like using very advanced device as my previous phone was N97 mini a resistive screen *slow*  s60v5 phone…I really liked the design of C7….C7 was very much ahead of other smartphones at that time in terms of both physical design and number of unique features like NFC,fm transmitter,8mp camera
In July I got Nokia X7…X7 in hands for first time almost felt like operating a phone made out of this world! Stylish phone with superb 4″ display and awesome audio quality through 2 speakers
but features wise speaking it was two steps backwards from C7 because of missing front cam(no video calls) and also fm transmitter(no music in car through phone)
then in November I got the N9!
If X7 was made out of this world cause of it’s design then I’d say N9 is like an advanced alien technology lol ….the swiping ui,beautiful screen, sexy unibody design, powerful multitasking….I just love it!
This year’s smartphone journey from C7,X7 to N9 for me is like watching the Lord of the rings trilogy where every part is like the legend to previous one

Got my N8 last October 2010. Still rockin’ it this 2011. This year will end still having my N8, along with 4 other phones – Lumia 800, N9, 700, and 500! 2011 is indeed a great year for Nokia! Looking forward to 2012! Bring it on. :)

Among the highlights of the year was the moment when I finally, finally, got hands-on time with the N9 at Nokia flagship store in Helsinki late fall. At that moment I knew it was the design I wanted from my next phone. Kept waiting though, if, luckily, the upcoming Windows phones would feature the same gorgeous design.

    And oh yes, they did!

Lumia 800 with Windows Phone. My next phone it shall be, I said to myself. It was quite a leap of faith for a pro-Apple Mac user since 1991 (iPhone since ’08). But seeing the elegance of the device and operating system itself, I felt Nokia was back big time.

All that makes me happy, seeing it all become reality. It’s been a rough year for Nokia (especially the investors), but I think this is the right path and hope great success for the journey we’ve all just stepped into!

Merry Christmas eller hyvää joulua! =)

    Yes, what a ride !!

This year I started  playing with Qt, and built my first Qt
application in record time to submit it to the CAI 10M competition.  That was a great experience: I was building
an app for Symbian^3 devices, but I didn’t have a S^3 device to test it. The RDA service came to rescue me, and as a result I won a shiny engraved X7. I also was accepted as a Qt ambassador.

This year I was one of those people that got very angry when
we heard about the Nokia-Microsoft deal, but this same year I changed my mind and am now looking at it as a great new opportunity, and after looking at the Lumias I’m feeling very proud to be on the Nokia side.

This year I built my first Java ME app to submit it to the
Create4Millions contest, and although I finished it on time, some external circumstances prevented me from submitting it to the competition.  Nevertheless, I learned a lot, and it was really interesting having to optimize code to the limit to be able to build a fast and nice looking app that would run without issues on very
resource-constrained devices such as those from the Series 40.

So, this was a very exciting year for me as well.

    Happy Holidays !

Highlight of the year definitely has to be the huge success in turning Nokia around…from first partnering with Microsoft to launching the Lumia handsets.  This is definitely putting Nokia back on the map against fierce competitors as Apple and Google! I must admit that at first I was a little skeptical about the partnership but as time passed, I got more and more excited abt it and Nokia didn’t disappoint at all! I’m definitely looking forward to 2012 and what Nokia has to offer to the world of smartphones!

Attracting new customers is one thing. Satisfying existing customers is another. Different they might seem, but both have a equation/relation. On those lines, the release of Symbian Anna and announcement of Symbian/Nokia Belle (to be launched for few older devices in Feb 12) is the best (according to me) from Nokia in this year 2011.

just want to commend Nokia for the hardware quality of their phones, heck, im still using your 6680 model XD im planning to replace it with a Lumia with at least 4″+ screen. please bring it to the philippines ASAP XD
merry christmas and happy new year  Nokia! God bless you always

Sorry, no nice comment from me.

I’ve seen the N9 during my vacation this autumn and loved the hardware but otherwise it looked a bit like Android… not very impressive for me. Several weeks later the Lumia 800 was released here in germany just in the Month I was able to extend my contract.

    Fantastic!

I used this chance to get a Device with such a great Design and the superior, new Windows Phone. I liked it very much from the videos and the advertisements.

The Hardware feels just great. Compact, heavy, durable… just valuable and worth the money. Only a small slider to protect the camera lens is missing…
But the rest? Has Nokia dismissed the quality department?!

You should be ashamed to release such a Device and name it smartphone!

I never ever had such a horrible experience. It is a immense step backwards compared to my former Nokia devices. And I had Nokia the past 16 years. The Nokia support is unfriendly and asking online for solutions I get mostly the answer it is the best device ever and I simply using it the wrong way. Are they paid to spread positive responses?! It feels just like that.
I’m forced to use bing search, I’m unable to access my files except from a single desktop PC, the maps stopped working offline, I can’t access my images using bluetooth, USB port is not working, I’m unable to transfer my communications (SMS) to my new device, if I answer a email I’m only able to attach images not a file I want to, the voice commands are a bad joke, the TV out is not working and the back and windows buttons are very confusing. It was the first time I had to send a Device back to T-Mobile!

T-Mobile germany refuses to change the Lumia 800 and won’t gave me a Device I would like to have instead. And now I have trouble to get out of the contract or get the money a Lumia 800 costs currently at Amazon to buy myself a device that fits my needs.

2011 was my worst Nokia expirience I ever had!

Well It all started with a near Heart attack with the Feb 11 stuff so much of anti Nokia stuff all around and crashing Nokia share prices. But Trust is not build in a day we have Trusted Nokia for years and We believe we will be back in a stronger and better way. still in this roller coater year I wud mention the following 3 events as huge highlights:
    1. Nokia Connection’2011: The awesome Nokia N9: A great industrial design and awesome UX design. The New strategy  that Qt connects next billion is a big winner for Nokia.

2 Nokia World ’2011:The launch of Nokia Lumia, live feed from SAlo factory, new Asha raange of phones. So, Nokia is not lazy and the giant can move quickly from partnership to a production device in 8 months. Global roll out in strong Nokia markets … great Nokia needs this sense of urgency. aweosme.

    3. Symbain ^ 3 still developing and developing for better the new incarnation of Nokia Belle UI is awesome. new Nokia NFC devices are simply best value for money. Will help Nokia get rid of a lot of ambiguity around symbian in months and years to come. Nokia has not deserted the symbian lovers ;)

Finally, Merry X-Mas and a gr8 new year Team Nokia. Write a new History of the biggest comeback and a new era of world domination starting 2012 :)

    Regards,
    Prasenjit Bist

Have to say the highlight of the year from Nokia was the unveiling of the N9. Regardless of availability in ‘X’ country, the whole internet tech world stopped and took notice of the multi-coloured marvel.

It reminded people just how good Nokia are at design (not that they should have had to be reminded but you know how fickle people are) and I honestly believe it paved the way properly for the Lumia 800.

Whatever your opinion on the N9/800 situation was, you can’t deny that the extremely positive reaction to the N9 paved the way perfectly for the 800. If it hadn’t been, I really doubt the Lumia would have got as fair a shot if it had just emerged out of nowhere (mainly due to many people writing Nokia off).

It’ll be very interesting to see how 2012 pans out for Nokia, other companies have re-invented themselves with varying levels of success, I just hope the building blocks put into place this year by Nokia prove people wrong.

    Dear Nokia Software Manager

Due to a critical bug I found in Nokia N8 which causes company get deceived and change the phone, as a loyal user, I wanted to contact with you so that I can tell you about it and stop the company being deceived. It’s very important because everybody can change his phone using this bug. You know I could share this as a trick on the net but as I said I’m a loyal user and have had only Nokia phones in my life.
I live in Iran. Unfortunately when I told the NCC in Tehran about the bug, they asked me for the details and I gave them a cue to prove that I’m not joking and in result the changing support is stopped in Iran.

There‘s two possibilities now. First is that they’ve found the bug and reported which is not fare since I am the one who found it and let them know. The second is that they still don’t know and just stopped the changing support. If so, I’d like to let you know about it to stop my dear company losing his money. I also would like to know how you thank such loyal users as me.

If you are willing to know about it you can contact me via my Email: Saeidsadeghiyan@ovi.com
I hope to hear from you soon.

    Yours Faithfully,

    Merry Christmas Nokia… :)

  • http://twitter.com/hmmJD1 JD!

Nokia has sold the phone! Why blame MS for all the problems? Nokia has partnered with them! It is Nokia’s responsibility to get things sorted out with them. Customer has purchased a NOKIA Phone and not a MS Phone!!!
So, If Nokia has not sorted out things with MS or MS not producing software better than others, It is still NOKIA’s responsibility. Nokia is supplying product with sub-standard MS software again.
    It is repeat of history.
Nokia has handed over their neck in MS hands.. which will cut it as soon as it gets more hungry.
The announcement of Feb 2011 will be written as worst Management learning for all…
Hope Nokia will wake up early!

Even I’m sporting a BlackBerry right now (as it fullfills my 200 emails per day needs) I was always a bit of a Nokia fanboy.

So, my 2011 highlights were related to Nokia, of course:
    - Nokia Lumia 800 launch ( I don’t own this device, so I am talking about the huge marketing and PR effort from Nokia)
    - the colourful and beautiful Nokia accesories launched this year (what a smart change of the portofolio).
    - the new Conversations site (yeah that’s a design and journalism lesson from Nokia HQ).

Hope 2012 will be a MUCH better year for the big N!
Thanks Phil for your work and congrats Heidi!

Yeah, it was quite a ride:-).
    Happy New Yeat!

    My highlight in 2011 was:
IMHO the Windows Phone platform is the best mobile platform around, but it is struggling. Nokia is the best hope for Windows Phone to succeed. And watching Nokia making its first steps in this new ecosystem, I am inclined to believe that they will deliver on that hope.
    I wish you a wonderful 2012!

    To Nokia,

2011 is certainly a memorable year for mobile phone lovers.
On one hand, it faces the toughest challenges from rivals. On the other hand, the product portfolio of Nokia is one of the strongest in years with exciting innovative products such as N9 and Lumia 800. From my point of view, the Harmattan swipe interface design for N9 as well as the polycarbon finish for N9 and Lumia 800 is simply unrivaled in the market, not only in 2011, but perhaps for months and years to come.

Apart from the products,I always appreciate the Nokia as a corporate citizen. I once read a touching story that the Nokia team spent effort on developing education delivery software system to enable the less privileged part of our world to receive schooling material despite they cannot afford computers. I am also aware that Nokia has been paying high priorities in protecting the environment when developing their products. Nokia is not a mere business for making money, but a responsible corporate bringing technology affordably, envirnomental-friendly to people in the world. (Unlike the fruity company which sell overpriced smartphones, ripping off billions of dollars without paying the slightest attention to charity and deprived people =P)

2011 is tough for Nokia, but Nokia came out with a handful of excellent products. I wish Nokia a strong 2012. The world is better with a strong Nokia. Nokia makes technology accessible and affordable to all people and do cool innovations from time to time.

I am trying a Lumia 800 and it is really slick and smooth. I am also finding way to get hold of a N9 as it is not yet distributed here…but it is simply to beuatiful to be missed.

To me the highlight of my personal phone year was the purchase of my N9.

To own the first and last MeeGo phone ever, coupled with the fact that it is the last of the flagship N series made this phone a must have for a Nokia geek like me!

One of the highlights of my non phone year was also Nokia related when I got an invite to NokiaUnfenced for the weekend. A great time was had by all and it allowed me to make some VERY important contacts (now friends) in the blogging world.  Which lead me to point of where I am now working with a team at Nokia Innovation.

So Nokia thanks for a great 2011 and I can’t wait to see what 2012 has in store.

Making it to Nokia’s Nseries wall of Fame, is the best thing that ever happened to me this year.
I rarely win things in my life. As far as I can remember, I never won any lucky draw or something like that. So the thoughts of winning something with just taking photos with a phone, is just unbelievable. Not to mention having your name on the wall-of-fame.

I put all the credit to the phone itself, my trustworthy N8. The best multipurposed compact-digital-camera-phone on the planet.

For 2012 I hope to see the N8 successor on the market. Can’t wait!
