Nokia Car Mode now available for download

Published by Adam Fraser on January 4, 2012

GLOBAL – People with a car and a smartphone running Nokia Belle will be glad to hear that Nokia Car Mode is now available for download from Nokia Store. This lets you connect your phone to your car’s infotainment system (if you’ve got one) and control your phone through the car, rather than touching the phone itself.

There’s two versions of this piece of software. One is called Nokia Car Mode that offers Nokia’s leading turn-by-turn navigation, as well as the overall smartphone experience into the car environment, while also bringing Nokia Drive, traffic updates, Nokia Music and voice calls while driving.

The other is called Nokia Car Mode with MirrorLink that gives additional MirrorLink support and the seamless connectivity of the smartphone within the car at a cost of £17.99 (€19.99).

Here’s some screenshots from the app on a Nokia 701.

While this is currently available for Nokia Belle phones, support for the Nokia N9 will be added at a later date.

Update: Nokia Car Mode with MirrorLink support is now available for Nokia Belle smartphones and Nokia N9.

If you’ve got a compatible phone and car system, download Nokia Car Mode today and let us know what you think of it.

I’ve installed on my 701 and it seems to me to still be at beta stage rather than a complete app.  Surprised they haven’t done more through betalabs with this one rather than releasing through the store.

User interface is nice, big buttons etc do the job intended and the screen stays on all the time (don’t forget to plug in the car charger).  Portrait and landscape mode as well (though I can only really use portrait mode as my ebay special car holder is fixed this way – no official car holder from Nokia for C7 / 701).

    Developments needed
Podcast support – at the moment it only seems to pick up music from the music library and there is no way to select podcasts, as a workaround if a podcast is “Now Playing” then car mode will recognise this and play the podcast – but this doesn’t help if a podcast finishes whilst on the road as another can’t be selected from within car mode.
FM transmitter toggle requires 2 clicks to start – this should only be one click with frequency selection restricted to options.
Car Mode automatically turns on bluetooth – but the car mode custom status bar (extra bold battery & signal bars) doesn’t show bluetooth icon (or other connectivity icons). My car doesn’t have bluetooth so this setting should be optional.
It beeps on every button press in general profile – even though my general profile has key tones off, in silent mode it doesn’t beep – Why?
When calling a contact it doesn’t display the phone number of the active call (possibilities of selecting an incorrect number for a contact by accident).

All in all a good start but I was hoping for more and hopefully the next version will be improved.

    Hi, it looks nice,

    BUT it misses functionality
there is no navigation over Bluetooth to the car handsfreeset
as well as no music over Bluetooth.

How many customers has to go away
to make programmers implement useful functions.

It is way to much just for simple big icons whatsoever.

The functionality you are looking for is provided by the version with MirrorLink support. You need however a car or a dashboard with MirrorLink too.

Music over Bluetooth is supported by Nokia smartphones, independently from the Nokia Drive or Nokia Car Mode.

Nice! Very excited to hear about upcoming version for N9!

On incoming calls only the phone number is shown, not the contact name.

No shuffle play for playlist in music player.

    Nice app.
But missing the option to dim, or totally disconect the screen after a short time of unused. The screen shoul go off after some time and “wake up” again with a touch.

In call the bulit-in loudspeaker is not activated. So it’s useless without BT device or headset.

If you played music and exit the program the status bar of Nokia Belle still informs about the player. Select it brings you to the homescreen. Why is the player even linked in the status bar?

Bluetooth is automatically activated even if not selected in first screen.

I have bought this Nokia Car Mode with MirrorLink application for Nokia 701,and I also have a MirrorLink client for Nokia N97 mini.
With N97 mini,if I want to use Mirrorlink mode, I should set the phone with IP Passthrough mode.
How can I set Nokia 701 for Mirrorlink?

Its kind of funny that alpine adverts has N9 in the picture but this is yet only for belle phones. I really do hope that this will come to N9 too and isnt only empty promise

       @haikus:disqus

Has claimed it’s coming, in this thread IIRC…
In a N9 Nokia Public Transport thread at Betalabs I asked again & he confirmed.

So far they still won’t say when though….
Which is extremely frustrating given that Belle users have had access to a beta version since Jan!

Firstly, a big thank you for releasing
Nokia car mode. It’s a great idea way of making user’s lives safer.

However, like many thousands of others I use
Spotify on a mobile whilst driving and since
updating my N8 to Symbian Belle this has become too unsafe to use. This is
because the maximum ‘screen / keylock time-out’ duration has been reduced to 5
    minutes from 30.

Attempting to skip a track is now pretty
much impossible in traffic as the buttons required to deactivate the key lock
can’t be reached when easily whilst driving or when the phone is mounted in the
    Nokia car mount.

I’m sure that the thousands of Spotify
users out there would be much safer if at the very least the ‘screen / keylock time-out’
duration was extended or the ability
for the 3rd party apps to prevent locking was implemented (in a
similar manner to the ‘video’ and ‘maps’ apps).

An even better improvement would be an
option to switch to Spotify from the ‘car mode’ app which bypasses the ‘keylock
    time-out’ during this run.

Access to a ‘car safe’ version of Spotify for
Symbian would be even better. I wouldn’t be surprised if Spotify would be
    interested in collaborating on this.

Lastly, had more api’s for the N8’s fm
transmitter been available to the public I would have attempt to develop something
similar to car mode myself ;)

    Simon,

post any reply NokiaBetaLabs user nomism

It’d make WAY MORE sense to provide such detailed feedback in the the Betalabs thread for Nokia Car Mode.

  • fjh11

Please make it available for 808 PureView (I was using it on my N8 without a problem, so it should be compatible with the 808)

  • SteveC

This is one of my most used apps.Eventually I’ll have to move to WP8,are you planning on a WP version?

  • fred

when will it be available on lumia 920

    • jalyst

Why hijack a thread about Symbian/Harmattan, esp. when you’re necro-posting in a ancient one. There’s better ways to get in touch with the Nokia Conversation writers…
