Nokia N9 apps – the readers’ choice

 Nokia N9

PORTLAND, OR, United States – Last month, I posted my favorite applications for the very popular Nokia N9 handset. The comments were ripe with suggestions and tips that were very useful and entertaining.

Today, let’s take a look at the choice applications from beyond my limited point of view. This is the must-have list, according to our N9-toting commenters.

cuteTube – having YouTube on your mobile is the perfect way to watch music videos or any other YouTube content. cuteTube brings YouTube to your Nokia N9 and allows you to browse, search, play, upload and download videos. You can also manage your uploads, favorites, playlists and subscriptions.

Nokia Live ViewLive View shows you points of interest in a heads-up display type view. This augmented reality application lets you filter out specific types of businesses including restaurants, banks and so forth. You can even read restaurant reviews and pull up walking directions to business in your viscinity.

Clipman – Ever want more than simple copy/paste functionality on your N9? Clipman helps you manage your text-based clipboard by keeping the data in s small data. You can run Clipman and see your copy/paste history and paste large blocks of text into documents, SMS, IM or command line. This is a geeky yet useful application.

Tag Center – Everyone knows the Nokia N9 has an NFC chip inside, but the useful applications for it are sometimes hard to find. Tag Center exposes discount coupons, content and applications from brands at participating locations where the posters exist.

fMobi – I can’t believe I left this off the original must-have list. fMobi is the best Facebook client for my Nokia N8 and because it’s a Qt application, it’s a strong contender on the N9 as well. fMobi keeps you ‘in the loop’ with all your Facebook friends including place check-ins, notifications and more.

Calendar Feed – The notification screen on the N9 shows recent Tweets, missed SMS and email messagex; but wouldn’t it be useful to see what’s coming up on your calendar too? Calendar Feed solves this issue by showing you your next appointment on your calendar for easy access. You’ll never miss an appointment again.

TwimGo – The onboard Twitter application on the N9 is sufficient for my use, but another popular client is available in the Nokia Store as well. TwimGo offers a unique user interface. One facet I like about TwimGo is that this application shows a grid view in landscape mode and a list view in portrait mode.

PhoneTorch – Sometimes you’re in the dark and you just need a flashlight. The Nokia N9 features an LED camera flash, when enabled, can be a very effective flashlight in a pinch. PhoneTorch N9 LED Flashlight enables the bright white LEDs to light your way when you need to find something in the dark or use your keys to open your car at night.

Nokia City SceneCity Scene presents a much needed addition to any maps application. Once you find a point of interest inside this application, you can see a picture of the front of the business. By integrating with NAVTEQ street imagery, you can see the building fronts for cities such as London and about a dozen US cities.

There is a definitive problem with the phone torch: it produces a battery drain and only reboot of device solves it.

  • incognito

Personally, I find The Flashlight N9 from picoBrothers far better torch app than the PhoneTorch, tho I haven’t experienced any battery drains with either, apart from the usual increase of power consumption while either of them being active, due to the bright LEDs of course.

Try also Home Screen Settings, SciCalc and Filebox. For all you who did some new year resolutions about losing weight or gaining muscles try of course SportsTracker and Barbell Gym Tracker and after January all you Finnish users should try Viiniopas :)

Please make a list with the best games for N9 too :) Take a look at the EmuMaster

Thank you for your article Jason, but why you didn’t put any screen-shot in the article (like Adam did for his article on Lumia apps)?

We all want to see how the applications look like on N9, some screen shots would be more than explanatory for what the app is doing and so on – like people say: “an image is worth more than 1000 words”.
Other than that hopefully Nokia will do the analysis now after a Q4 quarter of having Microsoft’s WP7 in Lumia (3.7″), Meego on N9 (3.9″), Nokia Belle in 603 (3.5″), 700 (3.2″) and 701 (3.5″) and Nokia Asha Touch and see which one performed better. I think N9 and Belle devices performed better then MS’ WP7 even if N9 and Belle were forced out by Nokia from providers and stores. We need some numbers, to see what people want. Nobody can be buried alive !

Nice post, Jason. Really useful for people like me who are super new to the N9, and this is a great point in the right direction. I hope there will be plenty more offerings in Conversations on this stunning Nokia device. Cheers!  :)

Two posts are published on the same day on Conversations by Nkoia. One is about Lumia, the other is about N9. The post related to Nokia N9 received twice the reader count of that of Lumia. It is evidence that people interested in Nokia is simply like N9 more. Lumia 800 is a good phone that I have recommended to several people and there is nothing wrong pushing it into the market. However, please give N9 a fair chance by making it available to more markets. That would be very appreciated.

Could be related to the fact that we accidentally switched commenting off on the Lumia post ;-)

I have been looking in vain for the Nokia N9. I tried the Lumia 800 here in India but was not too excited by the OS, the tiles, and the UI. I wish Nokia would make the N9 phone available and provide an Office Suite and full-fledged productivity apps as well. This could be a rich, live, alternate ecosystem… it has so many users in awe but right now, without the N9. I can’t understand why you would kill a product that appears so refreshing. Please give it a fair chance and sell it everywhere not just in 14 countries. And, India is the 3rd largest market for mobiles in the world – and it is not being made available. Sad.

Can Android applications be run on Nokia N9 MeeGo?

I understood it is possible, using a software that allows this to happen.

Does anybody try it out, has anybody details on this?

And how would switching off commenting explain the readercount exactly sir?Last time I checked you don’t need to comment when reading an article.

I was thinking for the very long time between N9 and Lumia 800. And I’ve bought N9. I really fell in love in swipe interface. I understand that MeeGo as OS has no future, but it’s really good feeling, that you hold in your arm unique model with unique interface, which will never use in other models. For now Ovi Store has more than enough apps for N9 – there are system, office, sports, health apps, games, pics, ringtones, etc. Some people complaints that N9 hasn’t app for editing office files – only view – I used Nokia phones, such as N82, C6, which has an editing apps. It’s inconvenient for me. Better use laptop :)

No WhatsApp and Viber for N9.
I’ve bought N9 and I love it so much but the three main screen not enough, if there a screen for gadgets and shortcuts which the user can control it like belle it will be perfect.
The internet browser lack of copy/paste function, i can’t take a sentence to make a search of it, i should write it and this is boring.
I read the device ready with FM radio and Fm transmitter, are you putting these hardware just to block some gabs on the phone?!!!!!
will you update a software for it?!!!!!!
And finally the front camera it’s work nice with mirror application but i don’t need it as a mirror i want to use it for video calls and Skype video calls, i hope you develop the next update considering what costumer need.
Really Nokia N9 is a big SHOCK.

Try eBuddy, you’ll be surprised how good it is.
    Add this…

“Organiser Feed” as actually better than “Calendar Feed”.

["provide an Office Suite and full-fledged productivity apps"]

Add talk *dot* maemo *dot* org/ to the front of this:
    showthread.php?t=80765

  • Anonymous

No, there are lengthy threads explaining why this won’t happen.
    Search forum*dot*meego*com* AND talk*dot*maemo*dot*org

The only chance would be for the community to come up w/a F/OSS version of OpenACL or AlienDalvik.

[" if there a screen for gadgets and shortcuts which the user can control it like belle it will be perfect"]

    Google: “widget canvas meego”

["The internet browser lack of copy/paste function, i can't take a
sentence to make a search of it, i should write it and this is boring."]

There’s apps to get around this…
And IIRC system-wide copy/paste is coming with 1.2.
Search konttori’s blog post to confirm.

["I read the device ready with FM radio and Fm transmitter,"]

    Read this thread
    showthread.php?t=3902&page=3
Add forum*dot*meego*dot*com in front of it.

FM-RX/RDS is working via a hack, but a slicker version’s coming.
FM-TX may still be possible, but it’s a very low priority for now.
If you read the entire thread, you’ll know the status of everything.

OR… we don’t really care about the Lumia :)

  • http://twitter.com/jGRite GhaV jGRite

To bad this phone wasn’t LTE ready :/

  • Anonymous

    Why?
Current LTE chipsets are shocking when it comes to consumption.
The gen. that’s efficient whilst using it arrives this year.

The few places in the world where it’s common, the reception’s often poor.
To the point where you don’t see a huge advantage over hspa+ etc.

LTE is hugely overrated… it’s “still” early days…

N9 is the best Nokia phone, even after the launch of Lumia 900.

N9 has USB host – Lumia 900 does not.
N9 has 1 GB RAMemory – Lumia has only half
N9 has NFC – Lumia 900 does not
N9 has a beautiful OS with Swipe, the most innovative OS
    - Lumia 900 does not

N9 is available – Lumia 900 will be available in 2-3 months – not worth waiting

N9 has a chance to run all the Android applications with a F/OSS version of OpenACL or AlienDalvik – Lumia cannot run anything else than Windows marketplace, where are few apps for big $$$

  • Anonymous

USB-host is not ready yet last I checked.

There’s a thread at FMC for the latest developments. Try searching…

    2)
Doubtful, but no idea, & who cares…
That’s a far more specialised app, that has zilch broad appeal
The N9 was/is about appealing to a much wider audience

  • Anonymous

You forgot to mention the Lumia 900 is carrier-locked to AT&T, which IMHO is utter BS. Nokia phones have always been loved for being able to be used on a wide range of networks. Having a locked phone (on a carrier famous for overcharging and ripping off customers) is not good. That’s another reason for me to love my N9. I can use it on any sim-using carrier I want. I hate that carrier-dictating BS. It puts the customer back in the corner facing a 2-year contract rifle barrel. Check AT&T’s monthly prices on their site if you think I’m exaggerating. T-Mobile offers much better value, but the Lumia 900 is not available to T-Mobile, so therefore, BS. And also therefore, N9 rocks. Period.
