Nokia Lumia 900 – Born for the USA (update)

Watch the first hands-on video and see full specs of Nokia's big new Windows phone

Published by Ian Delaney on January 9, 2012

LAS VEGAS, NV, United States – Nokia announces its biggest yet thinnest Windows Phone to date with the Nokia Lumia 900, its first phone to support high-speed LTE data transfers.

UPDATE: The Nokia Lumia 900 has picked up CNET’s best of CES smartphone award. We’re so proud to be picking up awards like this so soon. Check it out on CNET.

As our exclusive video shows, this powerhouse was built exclusively for AT&T and promises a bigger, faster, stronger smartphone experience thanks to larger screen, faster processor and support for the fastest mobile data transfers available to date.

Nokia Lumia 900

The Nokia Lumia 900 allows data downloads up to 50Mbps on AT&T’s 4G LTE network. What does that mean? It means that you’ll be able to view videos as fast as you can click on them, and never wait. It means your email arrives on time and you’re not sitting looking at an hourglass. It means the Web is totally fun to use on your mobile.

If you don’t have LTE, then the next step down is HSPA for a mere (cough!) 21Mbps download speed. How will you cope, USA?

Starting with the screen, the Nokia Lumia 900 puts an end to squinting at your smartphone display. It boasts a large, 4.3-inch AMOLED ClearBlack display to offer a big, crystal clear and super-colorful screen indoors and out. The resolution is 800 by 480 pixels.

Nokia Lumia 900

Inside, there’s a 1.4GHz processor, running on an updated chipset, to support LTE. It’ll keep the phone running smooth and make sure everything happens now. For the tech aficionados, it’s a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8055 + MDM9200.

But not everything is totally new. We’ve recreated the popular polycarbonate unibody design pioneered by the Nokia N9 and the Nokia Lumia 800 for this new, bigger model. It looks amazing, fits the hand superbly – and it’s really hard to do it any damage from our experience here on Conversations.

Tech Specs

Networks: GSM/EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/1900/2100, LTE Band 4 (1700/2100) & 17 (700)

OS: Windows Phone Release 7.5 – Mango Commercial Release 2 (Mango + LTE)

Memory: 512MB RAM

Storage: 16 GB internal memory (14.5GB user memory) + SkyDrive cloud storage

Volume: 90cc

Weight: 160g (5.6 ounces)

Dimensions: (max): 127.8 x 68.5 x 11.5 mm (5 x 2.7 x .45 inches)

A-GPS

USB 2.0 high-speed

Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

Another big plus is the battery. Often, you’d expect a bigger screen means that your battery won’t last too long. That’s far from the case here. The souped-up 1830mAH battery in the Nokia Lumia 900 will last for about 7hrs talk-time and up to 300hrs on standby.

To give another measurement of that battery, if you switch to flight mode and use it just as an MP3 music player, it’ll keep going for more than two-and-a-half days.

Fully integrated into the totally intuitive Windows Phone ease-of-use experience, the Nokia Lumia 900 offers Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive through the Windows Phone Marketplace. Nokia Drive offers free, turn-by-turn, voice-guided navigation everywhere.

Social networking is embedded to the core with all your Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn contacts available from the start. The built-in Games and Music hubs ably handle music and entertainment – including Xbox and Zune integration.

This phone will also please users wanting to ditch their compact camera. On the back, there’s an 8-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens and a dual LED flash. This model has a larger, f2.2/28mm aperture, allowing more light into the camera for faster performance, lower chance of motion blur and better low-light shots.

It also supports hi-res video capture for 720p/30fps action footage. In addition, there’s a second, front-facing camera to give support for video calls (1-megapixel with an f2.4 lens and 30fps capture).

We’ll be giving you more in-depth detail on the new Nokia Lumia 900 during the course of the week and onwards. But what questions do you want us to answer about this great new smartphone?

This device with MeeGo-Harmattan would be a great device. With Windows Phone you can keep it, Nokia. I prefer Symbian or Android over Windows Phone.

Have you ever used Windows Phone?

      • Anonymous

Yes, I had a Windows Phone from HTC and we have a Lumia 800 at the office to check again if it suits to our IT infrastructure or not. And I must say for simple stuff it works.
But the Multitasking is a bad joke (the apps are getting freezed), we would be forced to install zune on our desktops, the updates are not OTA and offline backups are impossible. Not to mention the missing massstoragemode and outlook sync is only possible over the cloud. And this is a absolute blocker to gave internal data to a external company.

What’s a joke is the N9, where apps that don’t need to be kept running are kept running and hence it lags with 2-3 basic applications open.

Offline backups are in fact possible, and Windows Phone is a consumer product. Does your company also hand out Blackberries?

          • Anonymous

You unmasked yorself as a uninformed troll!

I’m using a N9 since several months and have never seen such manner using standard software.

I suggest you to stop trolling, buy a Device that fits your needs and refresh your IT knowledge. If a application is waiting IDLE for input it doesn’t consum CPU cycles. And this is in the most cases. If there is still something to do the app will keep consuming power in the background. Thats right. But at Windows Phone the user has to wait and watch at the application until it is finished. So checking emails while compressing a big zip file is not possible. For some it is okay, others want 2012 more.

The only scenario where the N9 is beginning to get slow is while playing a video in a minimized window and surfing the web the same time. But this works anyway only if the user really wants to do so. The build in video player pauses automatically while multitasking. At windows phone playing a video in the background is in comparsion impossible.

So please stop trolling if someone asks because of his own reasons for more features. If a mass market windows phone fits your needs buy one yourself.

          • http://fandroids.tumblr.com chadaddy

I have tried three separate demo units and all of them run at low FPS when two to three basic applications are open in the background. In a true “multitasking” scenario, an application in the background is not frozen. Unless it has a completely static UI after initial load, it will run processes. Sorry, but a smartphone is not a full-blown computer. Why do you need to compress a ZIP file on it? I can listen to music, load a webpage and be using a separate app at the same time.

You just can’t deal with the fact that “true” multitasking only brings about incredibly specific use cases and ends up as a boasting point that instead inconveniences you on a daily basis. You have unmasked yourself as a rabid fanboy, please sit down and stop lying to yourself.

          • Anonymous

ah, and btw. compare the time the battery leasts at the multitasking N9 and the Windows Phone Lumia 800.

Is this time the USB Plug working properly?

The Mass Storage Mode was not supported at my last Windows Phone. I was even unable to browse my files using bluetooth or connect it to my car stereo.

The user interface was great. But apart from that it was nearly useless. My 6230i ages ago had far less connection issues. :(

    • http://twitter.com/frenkiesmart Besir Kasami

Maybe it was your region or operator. I’m runing WP7 on my 2 year old HTC HD2
and never had any problems with connections or anything else… As far as
browsing the files, this is not posible since there is no direct access to the
file system. But you could do it with a custom application. You can search on
Xda Developers for File Browser for WP7

      • Anonymous

But the File Browser for WP7 is a application to browse the Files at the Device. How could this help?

I want to access my files via USB. And I’m unable to install at my Car Stereo a WP7 software.

    Complete agreement, love my N9…

WP7 is not popular in the states but they will likely get some market share with this device.  Might consider wp7 next year when its time to get a new phone – the Titan II though has a 16MP Camera.  The 900 will have a hard time competing with HTC on this one and its only going to get tougher!

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Once people pick it up, it won’t. Nokia design and build is a winner.

16MP camera which doesnt make better pics then an 8MP.

The Nokia will wine, cause the HTC is just a brick compared to these lovely designed nokia.

I agree. HTC is battle tested in android land and are now getting beat by Samsung for sales of android smartphones. I bet they shift their focus and try to make up ground with WP7, but can Nokia compete?

SkyDrive is really something. Takes a while to get used to a new way of thinking about things, but after that it’s plain sailing.

      • Anonymous

yes, if you feel comfortable to put your personal data on remote location you have no control over (but a lot of people do that using ex. gmail everyday)

I would prefer mass storage mode and offline sync with outlook though.  But SkyDrive is a great feature, but there should be an option for people who do not trust and want to to leave personal data on a server in a country with very shade democratic rules.

N9 will always be better than WinPhone crap. Very sad that Nokia takes wrong decisions.

      • Anonymous

Nokia almost went bankrupt pushing N9. How did that work out for Nokia??

At least with WP they have a future on one of the most supported platforms in the world. Xbox, Live and Windows 8 and Windows Phone all live/work/play seamlessly.

        • http://makesyouhappy.org/ Ricardo

Sure but “most supported” means 50% android, 45% iOS, 2% WP, 3% MeeGo and others.
So this market is no third big eco system. it’s just one of the smaller ones. No noticable change to MeeGo or Maemo + Symbian. The market share with Maemo + Symbian was even higher than WP now.

          • Anonymous

I’m not talking market share as that will come with time. Ecosystem and the fact that code between Xbox/Windows 8 and WIndows Phone is about 90% similar so porting and developing apps for ALL 3 platform, some of the biggest in the world, is as easy as pie lol…. THAT is the deciding factor. On top of that, Windows Phone has the fastest growing market of any OS. Almost 70K apps with only 13 months in the market…..

Maemo can’t compete with that in the long run.

I’d also like to see a not only a 16GB but 32GB and 64GB version for this phone. Sky drive is great, but with limited data plans not really the best option for all.

Plus there are parts of the country still running EDGE and Skydrive would not be feasible at all.

Lots!! I have a 32gb card in my N8 above and beyond the 16gb internal.  Plus I am already running out of space on my 16Gb N9…Makes me wish I bought the 64GB. If there was a 32Gb choice on the N9 I would have gotten that one.

If you aren’t going to make the memory easily expandable to the consumer you have to give a larger storage option.

Pics, music, games, movies, home video’s they all take up space and I don’t want to limit my phone by having limited memory.

Looks great, I understand the technical limitations but will this phone be built by Nokia now or by Compal again? Just want to note that the Lumia 800 doesn’t have the same unibody polycarbonate body as the N9 for example. Different manufacturers and techniques. Probably the phone pushing WP7.5/Mango as far as it goes. Like that it has the front facing camera Mango first supported. Interesting to see Lync, Skype or whatever supported there. We will see NFC and other hardware once Microsoft and I guess partly you as your partnered with ST-E adds those bits and parts.

i think they have kept the price of N9 deliberately high, to discourage sales(may be to kill meego on low number sales) and make way for the design of n9 on windows phones (hardware wise)..i still went and got a N9 though

This is much better than anything else you have but it would be nice to have a bigger display like the Titan II and a better camera.  Why the exclusive with AT&T?  They are a TERRIBLE carrier!  You should bring a decent phone to T-Mobile.   And don’t say Lumia 710 or 800 they are WAY too small to use!  I pay a premium price for my data plan so I would like to be able to get the full benefit of the HSPA+ 42.

    • http://twitter.com/akseX akse

Bigger display? You need a tablet or a phone? Nokias cameras are high quality no matter what megapixels.. I bet HTC keeps producing crappy images even with 16mpix.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Heidi

Right we are focused on launching the Lumia 900 with AT&T in the US, and we don’t have further statements/information about availability on other markets.

      • mamadondada papadondada

why take the better of  the lumia family to the US and compel us here in Europe to make do with the dumb 800, i thought they said Charity begins at home, or we in Europe have become Nokia’s guinea pig

  • http://twitter.com/veljharig VelJharig

Looks like a really nice phone… kudos, Nokia.  I would seriously consider it if it had at least 32GB of storage.  I will not consider something less than that, as I have a Samsung Focus now with 24GB, and I am constantly running out of space and having to manage what is on the device.  16GB is not sufficient for anyone that uses their phone as a serious media device (music/video), and with data plans in many countries being quite limited, Skydrive isn’t a reasonable option, especially for video. Please release a 32GB and 64GB version of this device to stay current with the competition (or better yet, leapfrog them and put out a 128GB device). ;)

cool the nokia N9 giant version

    • Rob Compton

Only a N9 Giant Version if it had 64Gb, NFC, and ran Meego/Harmattan. This is just another piece of MS running junk waiting to be infected by Windoze virii and then have anti-virus apps running on it that cripple it’s processor speed down to 1980′s proportions. The user interface looks like “My First Smartphone”, horrible. There is no replacement for the “swipe”.

Well i think its a given they have to go with the N9 device. It is nice. That being said, lets see where they go from here in 2012. Can they motivate their designers to do something just as good for a windows phone?

Problem is my n95 is falling apart. I need this 900 asap. Please release for sale tomorrow. I’m in LA on a business trip, if you have any CES floor models you could let me take home shout I’ll make the trip.

Serious question: does the 900 use SIM cards? I have always loved the ability to swap out a SIM card as I enjoy travelling internationally when I can afford it.

      Yes it does.

Why no 64G version?  Why only 512MB and not 1G of memory?  Although the 8MP camera on my N9 works really well, why not improve this to 10MP on the Lumia 900?  Why only available with AT&T and not also with T-Mobile’s 4G network?

It looks to be a nice phone and I will probably buy it, but the trouble is if Nokia really intends to challenge the competition here in the US, it needs to be one step AHEAD of Apple and the Android phone manufacturers and not one step behind or lock-step with the competition.

In Europe, where Nokia has the home player advantage, it really needs to bring something out to challenge the erosion of its market share to Apple and Android phones there as well – as I commented on the Lumia strategy map, releasing this phone only in the US will likely not do the company much good as their sales are not likely to erode much of the present market leader’s market share here.

Also, I don’t see any NFC mentioned in the tech specs – anyone have any details about this?

    • Anonymous

Windows Phone supports NFC. Not sure why it wasn’t included. Though most likely it was to keep costs down. Especially since they are spending a ton on marketing.

Where is the so-called ‘metallic body’ or the Lumia 900?

Seems to me it’s just a beefed up cousin of the Lumia 800.

This is loaded with Tango (Mango Commercial Release 2) right? What are the differences between it and Mango?

Lastly, I doubt this thing can fit into a pocket.

Put MeeGo on it and I will buy it. N9 is better tha this, it has NFC, it has USB host, it has 1 GB of RAM and it is more secure than Windows Phone which can get infected by Windows viruses.

      >it is more secure than Windows Phone which can get infected by Windows viruses.

Just to let you know Windows phone 7 and Windows are two different operating systems. Most viruses that are written for Windows are for x86 based software, something which Windows Phone 7 doesn’t run. Another point, all of the apps that are in the Marketplace are screened and tested, so the odds of getting a virus by downloading an app from the marketplace are very slim.

To the second point you made about the HTC Titan II having a bigger megapixel camera, more megapixels doesn’t always mean better quality picture. The type of sensor does. Sometimes lower megapixel count on the same size sensor (lets say on the Lumia 900 compared to the Titan II) will mean bigger pixels which leads to more light to each pixel, which leads to better geometric accuracy, better color saturation, better dynamic range, lower noise, which leads to a better overall picture( or video). So More megapixels doesn’t always mean better picture (or video).

Is this phone really comfortable to use with a single hand of an average guy (not the big guys only)? Doesn’t look like so looking at the size given. Does this camera perform far better than lumia 800 that uses the same Carl Zeiss lens, since same lens same megapixel? Is this phone comfortably pocketable? These are the questions I want to be answered before I could make a decision whether I should buy this one when becomes available or wait for different one or grab a different one. Device may look great and feel great but if not comfortable physically while playing and using with hand, whats the point of being just large and eye candy. Personally, 4inch would be the best for every size of hands, 4.3inch is a bit larger for normal sized hand.

Looks very nice, but the size appears to be more like a tablet than a phone. Cannot keep that in my trousers pocket all the time, like my current phone, and that is for me a very important criterion.

This one, you might consider moving from N9 to Lumia 900, because in the previous 800 it has same size as the N9, but this one has bigger screen, front cam, more Ram, as well as faster processor, also better battery. So yes, this will make a better step in Nokia products, and will take a lot of market share, but the only disadvantage is, if it come exclusive only for an ISP or any other company like AT&T, please Nokia, dont be stupide and let your first successful WP device be for all the world, because Nokia always saying connecting people, means everywhere not only in US, so please consider Asia as well as ME, and specially Dubai.

they are up todate  whats the point of throwing in a dual-core processor when it’s not needed?  Just because Android devices need dual-core to handle basic UI functions does not mean everyone else does.

It’s like throwing in 12GB of RAM in a computer mostly used for surfing the web, it’s total waste and will just sit there even though it might impress very ignorant and nontechnical friends.

First WP phone from Nokia that seems to be worthy of the name Nokia. Getting LTE out this quickly (assuming it actually ships in the next few months) when you were behind the curve is somewhat impressive. Now the REALLY big questions.
    Does it have NFC?
When will it be available for purchase?
    How much will it cost?
Until these 3 things are answered and implemented, not sure if it will be a game changer for Nokia or not.
    Good Luck!

Lumia 900 is not even recording 1080 full HD like iPhone 4 and 4S and all new Android phones.
Lumia 900 resolution is the same like MeeGo had on N9, where others use bigger resolutions. Lumia 900 does not have NFC, SD memory card, USB host, and even HTC Titan II LTE WP7 has more powerful processor and it has a camera of 16 Megpixel, plus a 4.7″ screen. Nokia was innovative with N8 and N9. The Elop effect destroyed Nokia, the board needs to realize this.

    • Anonymous

No one uses 1080p dude..180 mb/min thats almost 2GB for a 10min video…you’ll be out of memory fast for just video if you don’t know this then am guessing you don’t have a phone that shoots in 1080p  and its not better than shooting with a DSLR. Obviously you don’t know WP OS if your talking about 0.1 GH speed difference….and if you know anything about Nokia’s history you’ll know that Elop was brought because the company already in a very bad situation.

Think about it if they were so successful why did they changed their management?

“stupid restriction like ios?” Hardly”less apps and games than iphone?” Sorry you can’t have your fart apps.
“ugly and boring and not user friendly user interface?” Idiot. Windows Phone 7 is the BEST mobile OS currently available. Speedy, pretty, modern, and easy to use.

I dnt understand the bluetooth function of Lumia 710/800. Two of my friends bought both handsets, but the bluetooth function didn’t work with any handsets, not even sync with each other via bluetooth.

    • http://twitter.com/capricotwi04 Caprico

That’s because of Windows Phone. You need to buy a Symbian or Meego phone if you want to share files over bluetooth (maybe Android offers it too, idk). Windows Phone is a very restricted system where that function is missing. But you can use it’s bluetooth f.e with headsets with are made for that.

I had the same problem with an iPhone, very annoying.

Why didn”t Nokia think about before choosing Windows,as Bluetooth Sending an Recieving between Symbian an others phones as been the Top selling application, but with Windows it is not,an thats why people are switching to Android phones instead, plus you can put micro sd cards in these phones but not Windows,so instead an gaining buyers they are losing buyers now

As many have written, the Lumia 900 looks a fine phone.  While the specs are not up there iPhone and high-end Android phones they don’t necessarily need to be at this stage.  I do think that there are areas for a leading phone to be in, such as NFC, top-rank camera/software, adequate on-phone storage (for content and business work) vs cloud storage (consider potential attendant costs), etc….

What is less clear is the Nokia distribution strategy for this phone and the future specs.  Here in the UK I can pay my £400+ for Lumia 800 but it won’t have the bigger screen size or the FFC, but there is no plan for a Lumia 900 to be released here.  So, do I look to import a Samsung Focus S (same issue with their WP7 distribution strategy) or perhaps move to Android which has all bases covered.

Phone manufacturers and the operators need to realise that we can’t all spend £300-£600+ every six months on the next phone, especially when phone contract norm is 24-36 months these days.  But what we want, and here in the UK, is ample choice of WP phones, especially from Nokia.

    • Anonymous

Nokia messed badly up in the UK. First not selling the superior N9 and 2nd a simple, overpriced copy of the N9 with Windows – which isn’t a N9 nor a real Windows Phone. I would feel cheated with a Lumia 800 in my hands.

Even though I’m a Nokia-Fan, it might be best for you to switch to another brand. Especially if you want everything to be covered (future releases, good price/value, support, clear strategy etc.) you might be happier with another brand.

Everyone has it’s favorite phone, which can also be the Lumia. That’s why it’s great to have a choice, to be able to choose between different phones. Unfortunately Nokia tries to take that choice away from us, with a one-sided phone-strategy.

Come April and I’m getting a new phone. Would love to have the Lumia 800/900, just can’t overlook the fact that it doesn’t support USB mass storage mode! And since the N9 is available here in South Africa, I’m guessing the Lumia twins won’t be seen here anytime soon. Personally I love the N9 to bits, only thing holding me back is the lack of apps (especially Whatsapp). I’ve got some difficult decisions ahead of me :)

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Very personally speaking, I’m fine with the screen size of the Lumia 800 and N9. The N9 is a more traditional icons & apps interface, while the Lumia Windows Phones are all about integration and glanceability.

It’s a very hard choice – I am still switching between the two on a weekly basis. Sorry – wish I could give a definitive answer, but there you are.

      • http://twitter.com/wynandvs Wynand van Staden

Thanks Ian, my dilemma continues… :) Although I’ll probably go for the N9 in the end! Appreciate the reply!

        • Anonymous

Given the choice, go for the N9, what that beautiful body was really built for. I know your concerns over apps, but I was just as worried. Now I’m totally happy. Whatsapp would be nice, but it ain’t coming according to the developers. There are other options though, and for me, it’s not a deal breaker. MeeGo is just so *wonderful* to use, you can’t imagine using anything else. Swiping is so natural and easy, it’s a wonder no one else thought of it first! And my battery just won’t die! Ok, it will, but it takes over 2 days! I love it love it love it. You will too, I’m sure.

          • http://twitter.com/wynandvs Wynand van Staden

I’ve made up my mind…N9 it is! Thanks for convincing me!

          • Anonymous

You won’t regret it, Wynand! Just to help you even more, I took my N9 out on the town last night, took some of the best photos I’ve ever taken with a phone in the clubs we went to, got the routes we needed on Maps, and kept the world up-to-date with check-ins and Facebook updates. And all of this still left me with 60% battery at 3am! I love this phone, so will you!  :)

I’m getting the 900.  I would not consider an Android phone because I like the looks of Windows OS and how it works.  Android products are too cluttered or they just seem meant for kids in some way.  I want an adult phone that works great for family and dating.  Takes good pictures and videos, works with my life but doesn’t take over my time I should be telling those around me how much I love them and spending time with them.  Nokia Pulse is great for that and the camera and video helps me save those times together.  Plus, with Nokia Play 360 my music is my soul and it sounds better than it ever has and I can take it anywhere.  Love the company Nokia because it seems to help people around the world with their lives and doesn’t always do it at a price like Apple’s endless money pit and Androids “we control you” mentality.  My take, I want the good people to win and that’s Nokia people.  Yes, I own a N9 but Windows Mango topped it….and IOS and Android.

Funny comment. “Android…seem meant for kids in some way” and then you praise WP? hmm

“Nokia Play 360 my music is my soul and it sounds better than it ever has and I can take it anywhere” – sounds like a copy/paste of an advertising slogan

“Love the company Nokia because it seems to help people around the world with their lives” ehm…yes of course, advertising slogan part two.

“Yes, I own a N9 but Windows Mango topped it….and IOS and Android.” – No you def. don’t own a N9 – although I understand that everyone prefers another system.

Sorry to much fake in that comment to believe anything.

      • J A

What they are simply trying to say is that, just like any other open source technology, Android is just too cluttered, fragmented, un-smooth, and really for geeks who want to tinker. There is really nothing good to wrtie about Android and we quickly discovered that with attempts at delivering tablets with it. Next is the demise of the phones over time esepcially with the emergence of Windows Phones from Nokia and other sensible OEMs that decide to actually put efforts into their WP hardware. The partnership between MS and Nokia is great and really shows that they do not need other OEMs who decide to act stupidly instead of putting their all into hardware by simply duplicating their Android hardware for WP, given that WP does not even need any dual-core garbage to run super-fast and buttery smooth. However, Android is still so choppy even with all of that hardware processing power with its clunky UI/UX.

I’ll be happy to move to WP once it supports 1) USB OTG, 2) Micro SD expansion, 3) HDMI out, 4) FM transmitter, 5) NFC, 6) multiple video codex compatibility.  Once there…I will be happy to make the switch.  Let’s hope Apollo delivers on these rather mundane goals.  In the meantime, the new devices are absolutely beautiful and it looks like the future is pretty bright…as long as the alliance continues to execute and deliver.

    • J A

Which mobile device supports your laundry list? I’m not aware of one at all, you might as well switch already.

      • incognito

The Nokia N8, all apart from the NFC which is a hardware deficiency but is perfectly well supported by the OS (Symbian Anna/Belle…) and demonstrated on the Nokia C7 as well as some of the latest Symbian-based models.

Given that Stoli89 was talking about deficiencies of the WP as an OS, not any device in particular, one should not ask about the devices out there but about the OSes, and Symbian feature-wise blows them all out of the water, especially the severely lacking WP.

I’m not a fan of the Symbian OS, mind you, I cannot go back to it after the fabulous (but also quite lacking feature-wise) Maemo, but one has to give credit where credit is due.

Smartphones are nothing without apps. Why put your weight behind an OS that nobody programs for??? Nokia saw the light and that’s why they made the choice… You cannot compete in the US without all the popular apps that are on iOS and Android.

The good news this still includes a 1700/2100 band, so it should still have 3G on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network. I’ll make sure to purchase one off-contract and promptly unlock it.

The last thing I am going to do is switch to AT&T for the sake of using an “exclusive” phone (subsidy or not, this is one of the dumbest features of the United States’ cell phone market, it forces consumers to bundle a device with a network, rather than choose them individually based on their individual merits).  In comparison to T-Mobile, the only other major GSM provider in the country, AT&T offers no better service, but is still anywhere from 40% to 80% more expensive.  An extra $300 spent on “exclusive” hardware to avoid using AT&T’s network pays off in mere months.

    • Anonymous

Totally agree. My at&t bill used to be around $105 with limited talk, texts and (really) limited data. Now on T-Mobile I have unlimited everything for $55. I wouldn’t go near at&t ever again. RIP OFF MERCHANTS.

Looks like a really cool phone. What I can’t read is if there is hdmi or other ways of connecting to a screen/projector for running powerpoints or using the phone as a small computer connecting a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. It would be obvious to use the office package for this. Is there ways to connect to screens?
The lumia 800 seems only to have a miniusb, I haven’t seen the 900 yet.
Had the L800 in my hand today and was very impressed, very smooth.
On the Nokia webpage there is currently only two pieces of accessories, a bluetooth speaker and some headphones. Honestly, can’t I even connect a keyboard?

I think the Lumia 900 would be a better phone if you put a 12MP camera and mirco sd slot.  I can live with the removable battery since most flagship phones are heading in that path.  No card slot..I guess that is ok since added to the memory is the Skydrive cloud service. Love the 4.3 screen, Cyan colour and is built for the LTE network. BUT the 8MP is what turning me off.. My brother has an N8 and it has the best camera to date.  So why did the Lumia 900 step backwards on the camera?  I have enjoyed and still love my N900, but it is becoming slow and that maemo is sadly no more.. I want to upgrade, but it seems that Sony and Samsung are giving me what I want. I will wait and see what MWC 2012 will bring…

Mark, I’m with you.. I have the N8 and can not believe they went down on the cameral… makes no sense…

does anyone believe the at&t version will include nokia free turn by turn when they have an app for nav you have to pay for ? Now really….

    • Anonymous

Yes it will because that is a part of the OS. ATT does however sell their own turn by turn that cost $10 US

I don’t see why not. Especially since the majority of the world runs on GSM. And considering it is going to AT&T it will probably be a world phone anyways like the vast majority of theirs are.

No. You can blame the carriers for that. Verizon has only 1, Sprint too. It seems only ATT was selling them from the start. Even they push the iPhone at every chance they get.

i still hope that you release an updated X7 (with specs of 701 or more) BUT with an auto focus cam… that will be the best mid range model or high end i should say with the design, 4″ display, auto focus and other valuable specs of 701 like nfc, fm transmitter and many more… that will be enough for us… :) …

Can someone please tell me if the Nokia Lumia 900 works only with AT&T or not? If the other countries have LTE provider (4G), can they use the phone as well? For example, can one use the phone with its all capabiliy in Armenia or in United Arab Emirates?

March 18 is considered the launch date for the 900 in the U.S by media and your potential customers.  NOK has let others set this expectation in the market and you’re vulnerable to looking very bad if March 18 comes and goes with no 900.   Doesnt NOK realize how important launch dates have been for Apple products?  NOK needs to get ahead of this now and confirm or deny whether March 18 is the launch date…if it’s not too late already.  We’re less than 3 weeks out!

  • http://www.facebook.com/paul.a.katz2 Paul Aldige Katz

I’m sure atangoair’s comments are made out of love and excitement for the Lumia 900 :)

I actually pre-ordered one at a Microsoft Store, and am also wondering about its launch date. I’d very much like to know it specifically, as my phone plans are now tied up until it launches.

    • atangoair

Paul, yes it is made out of love!  I plan on saying adios to my Iphone and hola the Lumia 900; but my Iphone is on its very last leg.  I’m hoping it makes it to the 18th.  If NOK pushes the date beyond the 18th, I may end up back with the latest Iphone or perhaps a Focus out of neccessity.

But that’s not even the issue at this point; NOK needs to control the  expectations for its important products.  By standing aside and letting others set expectations, NOK almost looks disinterested and will look even worse if this 3/18 date turns out to be a mirage that they helped generate by malfeasant omission.

It’s being reported as fact by the majority of press that it launches on the 18th and NOK has nothing to say about the subject.  Hopefully the launch is the 18th and all of this turns out to be extra-hype for the product.  But if it goes beyond the 18th?  Then it’s a bit of a buzzkill.  Come on NOK, take control with a statement on this important issue…

Breaking absolutely no new grounds… how boring. Even the design is so haven’t-we-seen-that-before?.  I have an unlocked 800 and I do love it, but I always wonder how come nobody outside of Apple can actually innovate and come up with something that most people would say “wow!”. Come on Nokia (and also Msft), offer us something that’s different, other than the Metro UI. (Which BTW should have customizable tile sizes and app folders!!! Way too much scrolling needed at this point.) How about a clamshell WinPhone? How about one with a mini-HDMI output port? How about optical zoom on the camera (via internal vertical lens elements a la Sony’s slim offerings)?? Ok, how about more Nokia-centric apps and games?

your Iphone converts like me are offically frustrated.  We watch aapl launch a product today and get it to the consumer in 10 days.  Meanwhile, NOK doesnt seem to care at all about the consumer launch of it’s-supposedly-most-important-product-in-years.  This isnt good business and it is alienating your would-be early adopters.  Socan we please cut the crap already; is it March 18th or not???   P.S. btw, it needs to be 18 March at this point.

    • http://www.facebook.com/paul.a.katz2 Paul Aldige Katz

I stopped by the Tysons Corner Microsoft Store on Saturday, and one of their employees told me a Nokia rep stopped by on Friday to let them know the Lumia 900 would probably be coming out in April (no firm guarantee, but a strong likelihood). So, yeah, its likely gonna launch in the April time-frame. I didn’t press for a specific date or anything. I’m disappointed (especially because I have a preorder slip), but I will say the Lumia 800s they had on display convinced me to wait; they were far beyond any other Windows Phone on display.

Lumina Vaporware.. The 18th came and went and No Lumina 900
from Nokia… Just another way to tick off potential customers and loose
    market.

Several commercial entities are reported to have waited
until March 18th and when the phone did not produce itself, (Surprise.. Isn’t
this how Nokia blew it sales several years ago with other vaporphones)  have re-up’d their two year contracts with
different models. Leaking a date to hype up marketing and failing to follow
through with that date is the best way to lose loyalty and potential customers.
You would have thought Nokia would have learned its lesson by now but obviously
it did not…. Now all these geeks *me included) that had to have a new phone
and held out with superglue, duct tape, or older models snagged up from ebay as
temp devices were left with no other choice but to re-up their contracts with
different phones. Way to lose customer loyalty and a potential comeback in to
the market Nokia…. Fail. SO Nokia, at the least before you cause yourself
more damage and humiliation, push an official press release to announce launch
date before you push away more potential customers..

What should have been your reclaim to fame is not in the IT
world being looked at as how will Nokia handle this damage control from this
    new disaster….

The glory is over, and the vaporware phone damage for the
phone that did not release on reported dates falters and damage control begins…
Nokia, listen, You have completely turned off a large group of potential
customers, and the longer you hold private, the real release date (if there is
even a Lumina 900 to be sold, who knows at this point) the more customers and
    potential buyers you will lose…..

Not following through with touted release dates, does not
make smartphone users WANT to wait longer. It makes them resentful and makes
them want to immediately switch product brands.. Apparently Nokia still hasn’t
    figured that out…

why aren’t you mentioning CNETS headline April 9th ”"Nokia Lumina irks users by not connecting to the web”
    I’d say that’s rather important

  • X Sokolov

Should not say it because nobody cares but  for the record:

Windows Phone OS 7.5 installed on Nokia 900 does not allow to write applications using C++ and Java programming languages what is the standard for other platforms. Consider it as a big NO for new applications. MacOS and Android both allow to deliver applications written in C++ and Java. It is easy, it is simple, it is performing. Microsoft SilverLight is a dog. It is not a programming language that would supply a steady stream of applications for this phone. Nokia should fight  its way against Microsoft denial. C++ is must or platform will not have support from developers community. Unless Microsoft allows to developers to write applications in C++ and Java it will be very few good applications available.

really love the lumia 900 and the windows OS. im a bit dissapointed though, that they didnt bring the most eye catching feature of the lumia 800, which was the smooth transition between the body and the screen, and replaced that with a slight bump, which i think took away the raw beauty of the phone
