Nokia’s CES Highlights

To say it's been a whirlwind week for Nokia and the Conversations team on the ground at CES 2012 is putting it mildly

Published by Ian Delaney on January 12, 2012

Plaudits for the Lumia 900

LAS VEGAS, NV, United States - Vegas is a rollercoaster ride at the best of times. Add in a major new device launch and the madness that is four days of CES… well, it’s been a blast.

Of course, the week kicked off with a bang with the launch of the Nokia Lumia 900. We knew it was a really strong product, but were absolutely thrilled by the level of attention it got both on blogs and the twittersphere. And on the show floor, of course.

It also lead to awards. It’s won CNet’s “Best of CES” smartphone. The Lumia 900 won a Popular Mechanics editor’s choice award for CES. It got a Popular Science “Product of the Future” award, and is one of LAPTOP magazine’s “Best of CES” finalists.

As we mentioned in the run up to the show, something like 20,000 new products are launched at CES. To receive such a level of recognition in the face of incredibly stiff competition is a great honour.

Our man Kasey Farrar picks up the award

Of course, announcing new products is one thing; actually delivering them to market is another. So we were delighted to be able to say that Nokia Lumia sales have started in the US and also in Canada this week. Showing that these products really offer something new and different, we also unveiled some of the brand new software exclusives that are coming to Lumia phones soon.

Also well worth noting this week was Trevor’s in-depth article on the design story behind the Nokia Lumia 900 and his coverage of the Microsoft press conference, revealing Steve Ballmer’s love for Nokia’s Lumia phones. If audio rocks your socks, then Dan McGrath’s been on sterling form, too, this week in the podcasts: make sure you don’t miss episodes one and two from our man with the golden mic.

Our video team has been as busy as the editorial folks, of course, with exclusive interviews with CEO Stephen Elop and with Nokia USA President Chris Weber keeping them on their toes. But of course, it was their hands-on with the Nokia Lumia 900 that proved a smash hit with smartphone fans – more than half a million views after three days isn’t too shabby, guys – keep it up.

But now it’s time for the team to pack their bags and get back to their various offices across the world: they’ve got a ton of unread emails waiting for them. We hope you enjoyed our coverage. However, CES might be over, but the news never stops. Check back tomorrow for the latest.

rumours says that lumia 800 does not sels so well as expected. Do you have any numbers in comparison with other phones sales? Maybe nokia should focus more on new belle models?

Rumours say, that Lumia 800 is selling way better than expected.

No need to focus on a dying Symbian. But with your username, I don’t expect you to understand.

Why only 512MB of RAM, I know you will say there is no need to add more But its not true.

I have Nokia N8 and i read that Symbain don’t consume much RAM, so 256MB in N8 is much BUT i face the problems when i installed HD games and various applications..the phone wil start hang and needed restart and also become very very slow ….256MB is good for blank phones but if you do much with your device i do not think this much RAM will work.

And same for Lumia devices they only have 256MB of RAM and if you install HD games and applications  they also become slow on top of that the OS is win 7 hufff which is quite heavier than symbian.

So i guess Nokia should think about the configurations again..many people do not use there phones for only texting & call purposes now…

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

I’ve got lots of HD games on my Nokia Lumia 800, with no impact whatsoever on the operating speed. Comparing to the configuration of a different phone OS is apples vs. oranges.

      • Luv Datta

So it means Symbian is more effected as compared to Win? I hard re-stetted my N8 almost 4 times just because after installing too many games & apps my phone become too slow and froze almost times.

This time i installed nothing except maps and few apps…and its working smooth & fast hufff…..

I like this phone very much but just because of this problem i dont like this, i wish i could increase the RAM from 256 to 512 atleast in my N8 :)

        • Shiju Samuel

I feel the same –  don’t feel like installing more apps, having said that I end up installing more and more apps over the period of time and it slows. Then I end up hard reset. But I still love my N8 and feel the grass is just looks greener in other side.

Lumia-devices have 512 MB RAM which is more than enough. WP7 is one of the most optimized mobile OS’s available on the market.

“WP7 is one of the most optimized mobile OS’s available on the market.”
WHAT?? It’s the worst and the most poor sale in the market..

        • http://twitter.com/capricotwi04 Caprico

Thats brainwash made by Elop ;-)

WP7 is just getting started anedb. The marketshare right now has nothing to do with the fact that it is one of the most optimized mobile OS in the market today. It doesn’t need dual cores or gigs of RAM to deliver a smooth and joyful user experience. Before you make comical judgement here, go and use it. The customer satisfaction from these phones is one of the highest in the industry. Marketshare will come over time. It’s inevitable.

            1. Yes it need at least 1,4 Ghz to run smooth and it doesn’t support up to 8MP camera.. Right? Symbian runs smooth even with 680mhz..
            2. Is it comical to say someone his opinion and give facts for this? I think not..!
            3. I use it for at least 1.5-2 days and  i couldn’t for anymore.. Joyful? The squares and the list..? Yeahh.., sure.. I prefer to use my old 5800 and not this..
            4. Almost all companies sell WP but people don’t buy it.. They prefer the laggy Android but not this..
            5. I’m a Nokia costumer and i will be as long as they give us proper Symbian devices..

          • Anonymous

Symbian is not a smartphone OS. Sure it will run just fine with a 680Mhz processor. I used to love the Nokia 8890 many many years ago. Symbian, unfortunately is now a dying OS/platform.

Who said no one buys a Windows Phone? WPs are just getting started. In its first year, WP has sold more than Android did in its first year of launch (and Adnroid only had iPhone as real competition). You can only appreciate the beauty and usefulness of the square LIVE tiles when you use the phone. Until then, any judgement from you is not going to be carrying much weight. Use the phone first for few weeks, and then see… you’ll be amazed.

            There’s great beauty in simplicity.

They made it die.. People like “CEO” and you who is buying what other want to buy.. But to answer about Symbian,
            1. It’s not a Smartphone OS..?? It’s the first OS who is true smart and customizable (themes, wallpapers, icons etc.), and to remind you until now (except N9 who is the best) it’s the only who have application manager.. As for the live tiles who did this first? Yep, Symbian.. (see weather,e-mail,news,etc.)
            2. Any judgement for me is not carrying much weight? Do you know me? Did i say something bad for you? Because you saw me disrespect like the current CEO to older – faith customers.., and to our loving OS.. So, if you are the CEO, OK, but if you not what i say..
            3. I will not reply to any other post of you cause i don’t want to argue with 15 years old with no knowledge at mobiles..
You want WP? Buy it and live us alone…-

Yes, but, why 1.4 GHz and not 1.5 GHz, like HTC Titan? And why 8 MP and not 12 MP, like N8 and Sony Xperia S?

i dont see any imp0ovement in nokia wp7 phones,
but i did see improvement in marketing like in conversations.nokia

they seem to cover every single things about nokia, they deserve my praise.

q4 result is just around the corner, just a reminder to conversations to POST an article to show off how great lumia phone perform globally

Thank you. The phones are still in their roll-out period, of course, though.

It helps Nokia when they designed a unique looking phone.. I notice most phones are black (some have white) and too big screens..4.6 or 4.7… I like the 4.3 size and CYAN colour is very stylist and unique since nobody has that colour or for that matter many colours to choose from.  I keep thinking about the 5 or 6 colours of the N8!
