Nokia Drive on your Nokia Lumia: a turn-by-turn-guide

Published by Adam Fraser on January 23, 2012

GLOBAL – When it comes to mobile mapping services, Nokia is king. Nokia Maps has been Nokia’s killer location based service for years now and together with Nokia Drive is offering free navigation for everyone. Our video of Nokia Drive shot in Las Vegas (above)shows how effective it is in finding locations and getting you there. Today we show you how easy it is to use with our screen-by-screen guide. Nokia Drive is available on your Nokia Lumia 710, Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 900 (when the phone is released).

Nokia Lumia 710 Nokia Drive

Nokia Drive TileNokia Drive comes preinstalled, so head over to the applications list in your phone to find the app. If you want it to sit on your homescreen, press the Nokia Drive icon and press the “pin to start” option that pops up. Otherwise, just press the icon to load up the app.

The first screen you’ll see is a street map of your immediate area. Providing you’re not underground, that is, otherwise you’ll need to wait until you are out in the open. The blue arrow in the centre of the screen shows where you are and the direction your phone thinks you’re facing. Along the bottom of the screen is the name of the street you are on. If you’re holding the phone in portrait a speedometer, distance gauge and menu button will appear at the bottom also, otherwise, if you’re holding it in landscape position, it’ll appear on the left.

Nokia Drive: starting journey

If you’re thinking of traveling to a different country or just want to save local maps to reduce data costs, you can download additional maps from the settings section, under manage maps.

Nokia Drive: managing maps Nokia Drive: adding maps

To start navigating, you’ll need to press the menu button, followed by set destination. Type in the postcode/zip code or address into the address bar at the top. Below, you’ll see a list of results matching what you searched for with the nearest location first.

Nokia Drive: finding destination

If your desired destination is on the list, once you’ve selected it you’ll be shown a mini map of the location. It’s here you’ll decide to drive to your destination.

Nokia Drive: destination details

The mini map will expand further to show you the route from where you are, to where you want to go. There’s the added details of the journey listed below, such as distance you’ll need to travel and how long it will take you to get there. Hit the big blue start button to get going.

Nokia Drive: start driving

The on-screen directions now appear and you’ll see arrows telling you to turn left, or right at the appropriate junction. Once you’ve popped your phone into your mobile phone cradle, you’ll probably want to place the phone in the landscape position for optimised viewing. The whole UI has been designed with drivers in mind, for easy use.

Nokia Drive: on the move

If you want a better look of the road and local area, pressing the screen once will enlarge the map, hiding the on-screen heads up display (HUD).

Nokia Drive: enlarged map

As well as the audio turn-by-turn commands, you’ll see arrows in the mini dashboard on the left of the screen, showing added information to make your driving experience easier.

Soon available worldwide

On your journey, you’ll be presented with various icons that appear along your route. These points of interest let you know of any nearby gas stations, car parks and local train stations.

When you see the black and white checker flag on your screen and hear the voice telling you’ve reached your destination, you’ll know it’s time to turn off the engine.

is 710 coming to Finland at all? only 800 arrives next week..

  • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Hi there. The folks on the Finnish blog http://aani.nokia.com are better placed to answer this question.

  • http://aegisdesign.co.uk Shaun Murray

Are we going to see all the features on Symbian back in Drive?

    ie.

Clicking on the distance remaining to get the ETA?

    Voice with Streetnames?

Live traffic conditions that update the maps with colour coded routes and re-route for bad traffic?

    Safety camera warnings?

    Speed limit warnings?

It’s just a bit basic on the Lumia and even on the N9 (which seems to be almost identical an app except for multi tasking – the WP version stops downloading data if you don’t have it in the foreground) also compared to Symbian currently.

When it comes to mobile mapping services, Symbian is king

Totally agree, i mis a lot of functionality from the Symbian version and would also like to see this soon, at this stage it is unusable for my needs.

Quite sure I read a comment on the maps blog that they are busy adding missing symbian features to the Windows version.

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Thank you @aegisdesign:disqus for appreciating Nokia Maps on Symbian so much.

@C334S:disqus is right: introducing all the features currently available on Symbian is definitively what we are working on. Plus, of course, new ones ;-)

We are anyway proud of the current Nokia Drive for Nokia Lumia which we developed in record time.
Btw, @twitter-66517521:disqus, why is it for you so unusable? Care to share more details? We could prioritize the development of specific features.

  • http://aegisdesign.co.uk Shaun Murray

The ETA feature is perhaps something quite minor on the surface but so important if you’re driving somewhere for a meeting and need to work out if you’re going to be on time. It’s why I still use my C7 in the car instead of my N9 or my Lumia 800.

I also miss ‘Favourites’. I put clients addresses in as favourites. My partner is a nurse who visits patients in their homes. She has all her patients in her phone.

Those two are the main pain points that keep me using the Symbian version.

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

    This is all very legitimate.
You will see all these features asap in Nokia Drive for Nokia Lumia too.

I have used Nokia Maps on Nokia N97 Mini (downloaded the India map) to drive from Coorg to the heart of Bangalore. The Maps app was brilliant and took us through an amazing route to reach our destination about 2 hours earlier than planned – and this was in rush hour. We smoothly negotiated one-ways, detours, and felt pleased with ourselves. And this took place in a city that is known for impromptu re-routes, changed one-ways, and so on. It felt good on Symbian. And, surprisingly most people don’t even realize that it is free and that you don’t incur any expensive roaming data download charges if you have the maps downloaded and installed using your home network. Good work on Maps Nokia, and yes, I hope you will have an offering for folks like me who are looking for a Belle Upgrade of the E7 – is there one in the offing? Will there be an E8? Just wishful thinking but why not. Till then, still with my brilliant Nokia E62. Cheers to the developers who made such a feature rich phone that is not a memory hog and that can multitask – 6 year-old phone, original battery, battered body, but still very good – a tad slow yes, but very, very Nokia engineering.

Great news Pino. Glad to see they were just missed out of what must have been some pretty rapid coding to get the WP/N9 version ported rather than being forever gone.

Oopps..  I thought it will be better than one on my N8?? No Fluorites? may be they will add it in next version.

Nokia Drive on Windows phone works really good, but there is one big negative point… Please add a new option in windows phone to disable the A-GPS! I can’t use Nokia Drive abroad without roaming costs. Because A-GPS needs some data volume for the location. In Symbian I had a option to disable the A-GPS.

Have been told to turn into a one way street the wrong way TWICE, told to exit the motorway at services as there used to be a link road to my destination…not anymore so had to take a 30 mile detour….no speed camera warnings, no option for quickest/shortest route etc….wish i had stayed with Android!

I understand that Drive was produced in record time, and considering this it does a good job – but can anyone from Nokia officially say that Drive will be improved in future updates?

Specifically, the option to turn A-GPS off, which would allow for the much desired offline navigation feature. Although I’d appreciate any input, I’m really hoping for someone from Nokia who actually knows development plans for the app.

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @worldgoingmad:disqus, I would like to answer to you and @facebook-100000190621828:disqus too.
First of all. Yes, this is official, Nokia Drive will be improved in the near future. We, at Nokia, are committing to develop great location based services. This is part of our alliance with Microsoft for Windows Phone.
And yes, since a complete offline experience is one of our strengths on other platforms like Symbian and MeeGo you can bet that we are going to introduce it.

However, the A-GPS switch is a bit outside of our control right now. We actually believe that Windows Phone does a great job with GPS fixes and this is made possible by using A-GPS too. A typical A-GPS connection is around 8-10Kb, we believe that this is a fair trade-ff to provide a fast GPS fix.

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @Septeluna247:disqus, I’m really sorry for your negative experience with Nokia Drive. Would you mind letting us know where exactly this has happened?
No maps are perfect, but we can say to have high quality one provided by NAVTEQ that are continuously updated.
Of course, sometimes, some changes slip under our radar which is why we ask help of users like you. For example, you can report a mistake very conveniently at http://mapreporter.navteq.com/

More options for your route and camera warnings are some of the feature we have on other platforms like Symbian that will be ported as soon as possible also to our Nokia Lumia series.

Wow, fast reply – thanks! You do mention a “Complete offline experience”, which was what I loved on my ol’ N97, but having A-GPS as a requirement means having to have a data connection before navigation is started – or am I misunderstanding? Is this something MS are calling a “requirement”, or is it a Nokia decision?

Roaming data costs are still way too much, despite the best efforts of the EU ombudsman, and if I were to activate data roaming in order to activate A-GPS in – say France – then my device would of course download my latest emails, status updates, etc as well as the necessary A-GPS data, which could easily amount to 3-4 MB combined, before I switch the roaming option off. This would cost me about €12 on current data rates, and would also mean I’d be toggling roaming switches on and off whilst driving. Is there likely to be any flexibility on this issue?

Other than on Symbian, the current release of Nokia Drive for Nokia Lumia requires an initial network connection to calculate the route. When the complete offline experience will be introduced, you won’t need that connection anymore.

When this happens and if you want to avoid roaming costs for emails etc I suggest you to go under Settings > Cellular > Data roaming options > don’t roam.

I’m glad the maps team are still working hard to keep the software up-to-date, for all of Nokia’s platforms. I do worry a little though, that MeeGo map updates will not be as frequent as the golden children, the Lumias. The N9 is *SO* amazing, and it is such a masterpiece of brilliance, it would be a real shame if, as 2012 plods on, the crucial map updates go to the Lumias, the Symbians, even the S40s and bypass the N9. It’s no secret that the Nokia top brass squirm in their seats when asked about MeeGo/N9 and they’d rather not talk about it, but there are a LOT of peeps in the world who plumped up the cashola for that beauty, and I think there should be more mentioned about its development from Nokia, whether it’s on Conversations, or in the interviews in general.

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @alexben:disqus, which Nokia smartphone are you using right now?
Although this blog post is about our Nokia Lumia series, with Windows Phone, let me remind you that the latest Symbian improvements (Symbian Anna and, soon, Nokia Belle) are going to be available to all those smartphones we introduced one year ago like the Nokia N8.
At the same time we have update Nokia Maps for Symbian last November: http://conversations.nokia.com/2011/11/22/nokia-maps-arrives-on-your-symbian-homescreen/

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

    Hi @Stephens_Eloped:disqus, funny name ;-)
The Nokia N9 is amazing. We are very proud of it.
And Nokia Maps on Nokia N9 is about as great: we put all our experience we matured on Symbian into this product.
With Windows Phone becoming our main smartphone platform, however, it is clear that moving forward our focus for our mobile maps application will also switch to Windows Phone.

Hi @alexben:disqus, in fact, there are some hardware restrictions that make some upgrades impossible on some smartphones. Your Nokia C6-00 can get, for instance, Maps v3.06 which is the second last release.

Hi @google-d93fffa537dff5c303f5ef215c0dbe3c:disqus, as @worldgoingmad:disqus already mentioned, I’m also assuming you wanted to say ‘favourites’.
We are working on it. As a rule of thumb, if a feature is available on our Symbian application, it will be available on Nokia Lumia too. Of course, sometimes they will look slightly different, some other features might be removed if test and feedback show that they are superfluous and completely new features will be added too.

Nokai really need to push their excellent Navigation more.  I had recent bad experiences with both Tom Tom and Navigon, in particular the price they want for maps and updates and the impossible task of installing maps for different countries. Bought a Nokia C7 and I couldn’t be happier.  All the maps I want when I want them,  FREE.  The point though.  Nokia really needs to push this a lot especially on GPS forums.  Many GPS buyers think incorrectly that they can simply install maps for any country and it will be a snap. It isn’t! Compared to Nokia, Apple is nothing more than a glorified toy. iPhonet has no real working ability. (also looks primitive and lousy call quality.)

Just done a trial run with Nokia Drive. Beautifully clear but I do miss some things which I had on the Google maps – completely up-to-date maps (and the ones on my new Lumia 800 are a long way out of date) and the ability to choose a different route.  Missing as compared to my Co Pilot (not compatible with Windows) is the speed limit information.
Are there any plans to improve this basic excellent product?

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @yrretlanc:disqus, we are indeed continuously updating the app, Nokia Drive, and the country maps.
For instance, speed limit information is coming with the next release which is going to be automatically sent to you in the next days. You can read here what other features are included: http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/03/01/new-maps-drive-and-transport-in-depth/.

Hi. Ive been nokia consumer for these past 10 years, perhaps..and i always was a symbian fan, for its stability and reliance. One app which it’s highly required for me is its offline gps, with voice and turn by turn, with downloadable maps. The gps i still own in my E71 works even on out of service mobile phone area.  Ive spoke with nokia brazil about this function in lumia’s, and those guys told me that the GPS wich can work offline, and not-data required as well is not available in new lumia yet. Is this right? the lumia’s doesn’t have offline gps?

The gps i still own in my E71 works even on out of service mobile phone area.  Ive spoke with nokia brazil about this function in lumia’s, and those guys told me that the GPS wich can work offline, and not-data required as well is not available in new lumia yet. Is this right? the lumia’s doesn’t have offline gps?

I works well, but I miss the options that are available in the symbian version.  It’s just more refined on the C7 Belle.  One particular annoyance is that the app will not run in the background.  If I switch to google maps to see traffic and return to Drive, navigation has stopped and I have to reselect a destination.
