Lumia 900 is a Porsche in your pocket

Rob Chandhok of Qualcomm

GLOBAL – The processor that drives the new Nokia Lumia family of phones is like having a Porsche engine in your handset, according to makers Qualcomm.

That’s reassuring, isn’t it? The premium motor which runs the Nokia Lumia 710, Lumia 800 and the media-hungry 4.3-inch screen Nokia Lumia 900 have a 1.4 GHZ single-core Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU.

And senior vice president Rob Chandhok explained why that’s the mobile equivalent of having the cream of German auto-engineering in your pocket.

Qualcomm focus on making chips providing the maximum computing capability while using the least battery power, he says.

He told Nokia Conversations: “What we did in our architecture of the processors in the chip we are talking about is focus on the performance of the CPU (central processing unit) relative to power and we also focus on being able to dial that up and down very efficiently so that we didn’t have to have architectures where you have a big and little core.

“It’s like the difference between having an engine that has a wide range and one that doesn’t have a wide range.

“Snapdragon processors have a very wide range so you can dial them down to low power or you can ramp them up. So if you are driving a car or motorcycle that has that kind of range you can do a lot more with it.”

So what sort of engine would it be? I ask.

“I think we would say something like a Porsche,” says Rob with a grin.

So it can tick over nicely letting me type out a text very slowly, at my own pace, and then when I put the pedal to the metal on the Nokia Lumia 900 to access a video on the Web, it can screech off the starting grid and hit 4G Web speeds on AT&T’s network in the blink of an eye.

Qualcomm has worked with Nokia and Microsoft to ensure its Snapdragon processor works as efficiently as possible to give people a great mobile experience. The Nokia Lumia phones are the product of teamwork at the highest level.

Snapdragon

“One of the things you see with windows phone is a level of maturity from Microsoft software products applied to the level of maturity in the Snapdragon processors and the combination of those two things gives you performance and power.

“And Nokia has a lot of knowledge about how people use phones. So we tend to go back and forth. All of us in Nokia, Microsoft and Qualcomm, think about this as a system.

“In mobile that is incredibly important. Because you may think you have the most efficient radio possible, but if the applications using it abuse the signaling or use it in the wrong way, that can kill my battery just as easily.

Rob says that talk of dual-core and quad-core can be a bit of a distraction because these type of processors aren’t really needed in mobiles if the software is sophisticated enough.

“Dual cores are not twice as fast. You only get to use the multicores when the software runs in parallel. But by and large, currently the majority of software presents a single thread of workload to the processor.

“So in the mobile space in particular you don’t gain much yet. That’s changing. People are starting retool their software to be more parallel.”

Besides, Snapdragon is perfectly capable of splitting tasks.

“We don’t just make the CPU,” explains Rob. “But really, especially in the mobile space, it’s the whole system. For example, on the Snapdragon, when you are scrolling in the web browser we actually use the GPU (graphics processing unit) sometimes to optimise it so that you are basically just moving pixels in memory.

“So we take advantage of every bit of processing power we have. And also programming on the most efficient algorithm possible.

“Snapdragon represents a product specifically designed for the mobile consumer and mobile device. The devices that use Snapdragon are going to perform better and their batteries will last longer. And you are going to be happier.”

Couldn’t agree more! Quad-core smartphones are currently only necessary due to convoluted software. Could I please have a 5000mAh battery with that? :) The others are doing it wrong. All it is is another bullet-point on the sales package.

@GreatLakesdan…They are a hateful and vile bunch, paid or not!  But try as they may,  it ain’t gonna work, especially not on me.  My mind is made up – This N8 is OK, but will definitely be retired to the drawer once I purchase my Lumia (haven’t decided yet on the 800 or 900).  Fun times ahead for me and my Windows Phone.

it actually improve battery life while giving u more perfomance. all modern os can run on single core.

thats doesnt mean tegra 3 kind of games sholdnt be made

I was reading an interview this week (I’m afraid I can’t remember the interviewee). They said it’s all about the experience test:

“When you pick the phone up and play with it, can you tell if it’s got one or two cores? No, you cannot.”

Samsung Galaxy S2 100 times better as it is like using a Symbian phone,as i can Customize it,send an recieve things using Bluetooth an put my 32gb Micro sd Card inside it,All i use to be able to do with the Nokia N8,but you can”t do that with the Lumia 900,plus i can change the battery myself with the Galaxy S2 but you can”t with the Lumia 900,Windows as been a really bad choice made by Mr Elop but all he was bothered about is helping is old employee out,an Microsoft paid Nokia over $250 million to switch to Windows,an now Nokia is really struggling because people have switched to Android phones as you can the same thing on these phones as you could with Symbian one

Your an idiot Nokia isn’t doing well because symbian failed to gain traction in the smartphone race it has nothing to do with Windows. Their sales have gone up since they partnered with Windows. They have sold over a million windows 7 handsets. Please check your facts you sound like a butt hurt symbian fan.

Dude, WP7 is way way way behind in technology. It can only handle single core processor and one screen resolution (800×480). Please stop telling us a dual core processor is less efficient. For example, if you compare an OMAP3 (single core processor used in N9) with a newer OMAP4 (dual core processor), it has more video and music play back time.
I just wish Nokia can upgrade their own OS to utilitise some newer hardware to compete with Samsung and Apple rather than waiting on MS.

Dude, WP7 provides way superior user experience and user satisfaction with that single core processor than most dual core Android phones. 800 x 480 and dual cores mean nothing to most common users and its the end experience that matters. WP7 is super optimized to run silky smooth on single core processors, providing longer lasting battery and providing a fun experience. At the end of the day, what’s more important, boasting numbers on paper or actual experience of using a beautiful device? The only thing I will agree to is that with that single core processor, WP7 is not providing 1080p video recording. Small setback compared to the big picture experience of using a WP.

Btw, the dual core is not less efficient, its the Android and other OSes that are not yet optimized to work well with dual core processors.

As i read the post and the comments i need to say 2 things.
    1. N9 then is a Bugatti Veyron.. (with 1Ghz not 1.4..)
    2. As i say and to my other posts people who likes MS OS buy it.., but don’t tell us that is futuristic and smooth and..etc. etc.. You speak like fanandroids that the OS is the best.. Either is bad..
The only OS who makes people speak about it and THIS is how the future OS’s must be is MeeGo.. Yes it needs some fixes (who doesn’t) but is the best by far.. Only swipe and Fantastic app manager.. That’s my friends is the future and not some “live” squares or laggy Android..
I don’t speak for Symbian customization and smoothnes because some people in Nokia are angry and furious about it.. They have sold their souls to “others”…

I have absolutely no problems with Bing search on my windows phone. In fact Bing is now my default on my PC as it works as well as google not to say better and also have fewer adds. I also stop trusting google with my data, microsoft is benign in this respect as they make their money from Software not adverts. Google needs my personal info to target me adverts, Microsoft not as much.

All smartphones have a weak battery life. Some lumias had an initial problem but software update fixed it. As for Android, they will never get a decent battery cause of Android design. Hope you don’t have android.

I worked some years for Porsche, but personally I would prefer a Ferrari from Nokia. Something with a decent system and endless possibilities. Not one of those restricted Windows Phone Featurephones.
Something like every freak and mobile fan is dreaming of exactly as every sports car fan is dreaming of a Ferrari.

Something like a N900 in a outstanding design, dualcore, Keyboard, the camera from the N8, 1GB RAM and at minimum 64GB storage.
And this in a shiny Ferrari RED. And for the buisness customers in black. Oh Yeah!

Your wish is granted. I think you’ll find the battery in the Lumia 900 has been enhanced as well. As Ian Delaney says here http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/01/09/nokia-lumia-900-born-for-the-usa/: Another big plus is the battery. Often, you’d expect a bigger screen means that your battery won’t last too long. That’s far from the case here. The souped-up 1830mAH battery in the Nokia Lumia 900 will last for about 7hrs talk-time and up to 300hrs on standby.
To give another measurement of that battery, if you switch to flight mode and use it just as an MP3 music player, it’ll keep going for more than two-and-a-half days.

They are boiling with water like everyone else. But you get more than only a car. You are feeling a lot more exclusive with a Ferrari compared to a porsche, even if the performance is the same.

Who would spin his head if a porsche drives along? It feels like everyone is able to get one. You see every day 5 of those. The demand to get such a thing asap is not as high as if you see a Ferrari in the wild.

Same as the N9 in my habitat. I got asked what cood device very often. Never happened to my girlfriend with her Lumia 800 because it is simply a boring Winodws Phone. Nothing special, nothing exclusive even if it would have the same number of features.
