Windows Phone game developer kit

GLOBAL - This time next year, you could be a millionaire game developer – with the right idea and a little help from a man called Aaron Reed.

The software engineer –  from at Neumont University near Salt Lake City, Utah –
has written a book on developing games for Windows Phones and he reckons the whole process is pretty easy.

Aaron ReedTo build games for Xbox 360 and Windows Phone, you need to learn Microsoft’s XNA 4.0 development framework. And this book claims you can achieve that—even if you have no experience of developing games. There’s also plenty of help from Microsoft at the Xbox developer site (above).

Says Aaron: “For the first time in history, developers can write games for PC, a next generation console like the Xbox 360 and a next generation smartphone like Windows Phone all with the same code base.

“The gaming industry is booming and continues to grow. With hardware advances being made daily and the push toward mobile devices becoming more powerful and interactive, the industry is as exciting as ever.”

Learning XNABeginners will find several XNA key concepts hard to grasp but the book, called  Learning XNA 4.0 (O’Reilly Media), walks you through each step.

Each chapter takes the form of a lesson, complete with diagrams, examples and exercises. There are also tests to check that you get each stage of the program.

You can learn development from 2D animation to 3D cameras and effects, have a look at high-level shader language (HLSL) and build three games using 2D, 3D, and multiplayer techniques.

OK, it might not make you a millionaire, but it could help you get a new job.

Please dont be part of this sinking ship that Microsoft is trying to push very hard!

I highly recommend jumping on this ever-increasing bandwagon now, despite what the trolls tell you.

trolls – do you mean Trolltech guys? Trolls says right, support Qt. In worse case jump to Android bandwagon.

Qt? Why Qt? XNA does just fine. If you really need low-level code for heavy optimization, WP8 will have C++ support.
Microsoft will never be able to compete in this space if they stop and try to allow for every obscure, proprietary framework in existence. All that would do is bloat the system and make a bad user experience, just so that a few more developers will be a bit happier.

they are more interest to get people develop applications for their platform whatever framework it is. Reason for C/C++ and Qt is simple: developers will to port their existing applications easily and will develop new ones using the tools they know.

+1. Also, I dont want to be a slave of this dictator – Microsoft! Developers deserve freedom!

I agree Microsoft is the future. If you want top of the line hardware and software its Nokia and Microsoft. Just bought the hp smarttouch computer and it kills my iMac. Never again will I waste money on outdated, overpriced Apple. Google’s gone insane with their no privacy policy. Is “reckon” a finnish term?

Without Qt and C/C++ no way! You can develop for your XNA platform yourself Aaron Reed. Instead of pushing books about yet another library, you better do support for existing technologies and developers will appreciate this.

Unfortunately it is a very low number, especially for Nokia. At the same 2 months time Apple sold 35 millions of iPhone 4S

      • Anonymous

No they didnt. The 4 and very old 3, for $1, outsold 4S.

Yes they did, read news papers more often, my frend. Apple sold over 4 million iPhone 4S units just 3 short days after launching it. It is written in official press release from apple October 17, 2011.

Don’t forget that Lumia is a new product. The iPhone has been around for a while now, so you can’t compare the figures. The first iPhone took a while to sell a million when it first came out, I seem to remember.

            Its 2012 now, not 2007!

The Nokia N8 had a better reception when it was new.

Even the N9 was sold out the moment it was released – eventhough people know it was a dead end, even though EElop tried to kill it and even though it was purposely released only in select minor markets.

Please dont remind me of the Ostrich!

“New product” – same new as any other phone. Form and hardware is known by N9, WP7 is known in other manufacturers phones. No difference. Just people not getting so excited by microsoft os inside. N9 sales much better. Check wikipedia Nokia N9 article: ”
Having no support from Nokia and with market restricions, the one and only N9 model has reached sales estimated to be between 1.5 and 2 million units. In a comparable period, 3 cheaper Lumia smartphones, sold in the most affluent markets, with the biggest marketing support by Nokia ever and with massive multi-hundred-million dollar marketing budget by Microsoft reached 600,000 unit sales combined. The N9 outsells Lumia in average 3 to 1 in sold units. Considering the higher price of N9 this means N9 model generates sagnificantly more income and revenue for Nokia than all 3 Lumia devices combined.”

Thats fanboy fever, but now correct your statement about the 35 million that you know I can take apart. People bought the 3, included in the numbers in force. Carriers told me the old 3 outsold the 4S.

The Lumia is at a very different stage in its product life to the iPhone, as you know. Noia is predicted to overtake Apple by 2015 http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2399940,00.asp

Saw the device in a store and my friend is using it for last two months. Amazed to see the features. Coming from a iPhone and Android background, this was a surprise from Microsoft. Love to hate MS but the UI is better than any other device I had seen. Very intutive !  Waiting for Lumia 900 preorder !
