Nokia Public Transport goes commercial

Public Transport London

GLOBAL – Using Nokia Maps to explore cities and urban areas is a pleasure. With the integrated and free voice guided turn-by-turn walk navigation you can go anywhere on foot, with shortcuts and footpaths all considered. However, sometimes you just want to take a bus or the tube to reach your destination: it’s just faster. And it might be also essential for your daily commute.

This is why we have developed Nokia Public Transport. It’s an app (currently available for Nokia Belle), which is going to be your perfect commuter and traveller companion.

Nokia Public Transport provides the most convenient underground, trams, buses and suburban trains directions in almost 80 cities or urban areas across the world. All the details are available on your Nokia smartphone and always accessible. You won’t need to carry around travel cards, timetables or network maps anymore.

As a commuter, you will find being able to save destinations such as office, home, clients addresses and friends houses to the app start screen particularly useful. Each time you open Nokia Public Transport you’ll have a quick overview and one-tap access to the next departures for those favourite destinations.

You can search for any address in your city but also for point of interests like restaurants or hotels. Very useful when you are visiting a city you are not familiar with. Nokia Public Transport also helps you walking to the stop you have to board and guides you from the final stop to your destination with the free voice guided turn-by-turn walk navigation provided by Nokia Maps.

Some of you might be already familiar with Nokia Public Transport, which we introduced for the first time, as beta, on Nokia Beta Labs last October. In fact, we have been collecting all your feedback to perfect the app.

We have been also introducing more cities to our already impressive coverage. Such as Helsinki (our home base and World Design Capital 2012) and Austin, TX (useful for the upcoming SxSW) but also Baltimore, MD, Sacramento, CA and Philadelphia, PA.

Public Transport Philadelphia

Today we are highlighting the commercial release of Nokia Public Transport for Nokia Belle, and if you love this version you can already test the next version (with more coverage and features) which is part of Nokia Maps Suite beta.

We would also like to remind that public transport directions are also available on http://maps.nokia.com, useful to easily plan your route on your web browser. Android or iOS users can do exactly the same on http://m.maps.nokia.com.

Nokia Maps for Nokia N9 and Nokia Maps for Nokia Lumia also provide public transport directions.

Last but not least, we are working on Nokia Public Transport for Nokia Lumia too, so stay tuned for further news.

VERY HELPFUL APLICATION FOR SYMBIAN, THE KING! The new UI of Belle and the new apps built with Qt is just great!!! The Qt/Belle is way to go, not WP dumb UI !!!

    Hey Pino,

    great blog post :-)

I use public transport since the first beta release on beta labs.
Its a very useful app, especially when you are in a city which is supported by public transport. It makes much easier to handle the public transport situation in foreign cities. The combination of time table and routing to the nearest station is great.

I tried it several times in Berlin and it worked very well.

I hope the next step is to enlarge the database of supported cities but I think the team behind public transport will do all their best to offer more cities in public transport.

Are there any plans to bring public transport to Lumia phones? I want to buy a Lumia 800 in May :-)

  • Prasenjit Bist

This app is awesum but when will it come for indian metros and i want it on both belle and windows phone 7.5

“Last but not least, we are working on Nokia Public Transport for Nokia Lumia too, so stay tuned for further news.”

And for the N9 I hope?

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Public transportation directions are included in Nokia Maps for Nokia N9 ;-)

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

We are working on extending the coverage as soon as possible!

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hello @Rikibu:disqus, Nokia Public Transport for Nokia Lumia is being build right now. You will see it live very soon. And of course we will try to include Leipzig as soon as possible.

  • nick109

I think you are referring to METRO or TRAINS. It definitely does not include bus systems, etc. which is why Public Transport is very useful.

I’m assuming N9 is being left out on this, even though bringing it from Belle to N9 shouldn’t be too hard.

     Hi Pino

    sounds great :-)

  • Patrick Nun

    And Stuttgart?

  • Andy Hards

My local bus service is amazing. They have real time data available on most bus stops telling me how many minutes till the next bus and I have the stops I use bookmarked in my browser so I can straight to the page for that stop. Surely you could get that info linked into Nokia Transport. We have had this real time facility for about 10 years now and they are now putting QR codes at bus stops to make it easier to access the relevant info quicker.
I use my suite of Nokia maps apps and would love to see it extended to include places other than major cities, especially those places that have connected systems already in place.

  • hriday.

@Nokia If you guys don release this app for the N9.. I will be so mad.. And not only me but billiiiooonnssss of N9 users.. This is one of the most importand apps on a daily basis.. Since the first beta I was waiting for the N9 anouncement, and now you are tellin me its bein left out.. ?? Damn if you don support your own products, who will then.. ???? I kno your bit** Lumia is your first priority but how can you treat your most loyal customers like thiss.. ? Think bout it.. If the Lumia fails big time, you need us more than anythin or anyone else, but if you continue like this, you’ll lose us too, like rest of the world.

  • Fernando Hortellani

Please add St. Louis, MO, USA to Nokia Public Transport. All the buses and trains timetables are available online, but it would be great to have them integrated to the app.

    Hi Pino,

Please advise is this is also being dev’d for N9/950.

    Thank-you.

  • nick109

For some reason, the team here thinks that Public Transport functionality is already on the N9 in the Maps app…

I just don’t get it..why refuse to bring it to N9..it’s already in Qt, porting is easy

  • Anonymous

Yeah I saw that, they said it’s there for Maps on Lumia/N9.
But then later in the article they pronounce that the NPT is coming to Lumia.

    WTF???

There must be more functionality in the dedicated app.
Than what there is currently in Maps for Lumia/N9.

Pino please clarify, & please advise if N9′s getting equal treatment.
It is after all a higher end model than the L800, we paid big $ for it.

  • Anonymous

Pino can you please look into this more & answer my & nick’s posts?
It’s not acceptable that N9 users are left out of this…
Especially since the N9′s a higher-end model than the 800, & one we paid bucket-loads for.

    Thank-you!

    Hi @jalyst:disqus and @google-7880e92eeb1c9fd7fccb371d7b87fd62:disqus,
for a full overview of Nokia Maps on Nokia N9 you can refer to http://blog.maps.nokia.com/archive/be-a-local-anywhere-with-the-latest-nokia-maps-and-drive
Currently, we offer Public Transport directions within Nokia Maps on Nokia N9.
This is not exactly the same offering as Nokia Public Transport for Nokia Belle which is being outlined in my post, because Nokia Maps has been developed to help you orientate yourself and discover neighborhoods.
Exactly the same experience is available on Nokia Maps for Nokia Lumia.
Additionally, Windows Phone is our main smartphone platform, which is why, moving forward, our focus for mobile maps applications is also switching to this platform.

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @fjh11:disqus, thanks for your appreciation. We are working with many local partners to make sure our coverage is going to be extended anytime soon.

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @andyhards:disqus, in which city do you live?
We know that on a local level, many transport agencies are providing similar features. This is why we want to work with them to make sure that Nokia users have everything in one place, with no need to download an app for each area.

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Please refer to my answer in the thread above

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

The coverage is different in several areas. In some of them we have all the means of transports in others only trains and trams. But we are working on extending it very fast.
Where is the city you live in?

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @google-368d638b1314ec65cf2dd2955aba7fcf:disqus, Stuttgart is one of the city I visit very often ;-) Alas, I can’t say right now when it is going to be included, but we are working on extending our coverage anytime soon.

And this is why I will never buy into another product from Nokia ever again, and certainly not a Lumia/Windows Phone.

Well done Pino, I hope you felt good when typing that reply. To say it sucks and is a kick in the teeth to your existing non-Lumia smartphone customers is an understatement.

Since this is a Qt app, to not ship it for the N9 is just a petty bureaucratic decision and isn’t going to make any N9 (or even Symbian) owners automatically switch to Lumia – more thank likely they’ll now just walk away from Nokia in disgust.

have you ever used a WP?

WP is the future and you guys need to grow up and stop bashing WP.

Please use the theme look and feel  of this app on Symbian and NOT WP boring black background you see in a lot WP apps.

In all honesty Pino, that rings kinda hollow.
The N9 (even now) is your top-end device.
In many parts of the world it’s only becoming available for purchase right now.
The people that were able to get it 1st, have had it for 4.5mth at the most.
At the early stages of it’s roll-out last year…
We were assured countless times that (unlike N900) it’d be supported aggressively till 2015.
These assurances were extended from all levels of the co, including Elop at one point.

It also makes even less sense given your initial focus is a Qt app for S^60
It should be easier to migrate the work done there to Maemo6x.
Then it would be to create the same app from scratch in WP.
In fact, it wouldn’t be all that hard for a big co. like Nokia to do both at once.
Especially with MS no doubt helping with the Lumia app.

  • http://twitter.com/nixanbal Nikola Balov

Can not get it on Nokia C7 with Belle. :( It’s not available in Bulgaria obviously, which is kinda stupid as I could use it in other countries…

    This is insane.

Porting apps from Symbian to the N9 is relatively simple compared to the complete rewrite needed for Windows Phone yet Nokia aren’t even prepared to do that?

The N9 NEEDS support from it’s parent company. Messages like this aren’t exactly encouraging for Qt developers if Nokia aren’t even prepared to support their own platform.

Aren’t we supposed to be preparing for the next billion with Qt?

You’re not going to have any Qt developers left if you’re telling us all to ditch our Qt based phones for Windows models.

Are we at least going to get feature parity in Maps and Drive with the Lumia versions?

Go to Nokia Maps Suite 2.0 forum at Beta Labs.
In the suggestions section under general there’s a thread titled:

“Please make a similar suite for N9/Maemo6x (MeeGo)”

    And your voice there…
Also there’s a link to a enhancement report that’s been submitted to the Maemo6x bug-tracker.
Add your vote there, & be sure to add your email address.

    Cheers.

Why is my comment being removed???
It’s no inflammatory or abusive in anyway, & had no urls.

Why are you actively trying to prevent N9 users from mobilizing in order to get more support from Nokia?
This is terrible, that is not the editors of this site’s job.
You are not supposed to be taking sides or preferences.

     Hey Pino,

The Maps functionality on the N9 is extremely limited as is it, compared to Symbian. Yes, I know in PR1.2 there are improvements, but reading this I don’t get my hopes up anymore.

I’m disappointed to read that Nokia seems to discard the N9 like an used handkerchief. What happened to the “supported at least until 2015″-statements? Not only will I not trade MeeGo for a Windows Phone device anytime soon (or ever), but the possibility of buying a Nokia is even slimmer with this kind of news :(

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Fair feedback, @twitter-40432470:disqus, thanks. I will pass it over to the team.

  • Anonymous

When will this be on N9 the 4month old top of the line phone?
I can’t check trains and buses today on my N9.
Since i live in Sweden they only need to add support for resrobot api to “Public Transport directions” to cover the hole country.
So i really hope this is coming to the new N9.
Or more preferably adding ” Nokia Public Transport” application so it gets the same update for directions as Symbian and WP.

  • Anonymous

Because of N9 I’m back using Nokia. Been away for several years. If you do not release any more MeeGo phones I will have to leave Nokia again when my phone decides to give up or if you cripple the services/support for it. Can’t understand how you could develop such great OS and jump into the arms of MS.

Hope you re-think this approach at Nokia and let both OS’s co-exist. All you would be otherwise is another HW vendor in the end providing Maps as well. That is not Nokia to me and how fun is that?

  • Anonymous

They claim they have “special access” to the dev of WP (Apollo).
In reality they won’t be allowed to differentiate WP for Nokia greatly.
Other than to add apps that sit on top of the OS….
