Search – a powerful tool on your Nokia Lumia

Search options

GLOBAL – What do you do if you want to translate foreign text, find the name of that song playing in the background, decipher that QR code or find details on that book you’re holding? The search function on your Nokia Lumia takes care of all of that. Here’s how.

At the bottom of your Nokia Lumia 710, Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 900 you’ll find the search icon – represented by a magnifying glass. This opens up a large range of searching options and the Bing homepage that features a new interesting image every day.

Of course, the usual way to search is to type your keywords into the search bar. Alternatively, try using your voice to search for something. Press the microphone icon and say what you want to look for. Bing will use Microsoft Tellme to understand what you’ve just said and deliver you a list of results.

Normal web searching aside, the really interesting features of search is the ability to use the phone’s camera to interact with items around you.

URL
Here’s a QR code. Have you scanned it?

Vision can scan 2D barcodes, QR codes, Microsoft Tags, book covers, CD covers and DVD covers. In reality, this means that if you’re in store and see a DVD that you want to buy, scan it first using vision. Within seconds you’ll see customer reviews and if you can find it cheaper anywhere else so you know if you’re being ripped-off, or not.

Scan text Translate text

There’s also a handy scan text option in here, too. With this you can scan the text on a piece of paper and copy it into an email, or somewhere similar. You could also use this as a translation tool that turns the text that your camera is looking at into 30 different languages. This could prove very useful when travelling abroad where languages are often a communication barrier.

Music search

Album song list Playing song on Zune

If there’s a tune playing in the background and you’d love to know the artist or track name, music search will listen to that song and provide you with the results. You can then download that song, or other songs on the same album right to your phone from Zune Marketplace.

If you’re searching for something local to you, local scout uses your GPS to find out where you are and provide you with lots of relevant information. From places to eat and drink, things to see and do or places to shop.

NEWS JUST IN [17 Feb]: We’ve learned today that Bing, in March, will introduce Image Matching for Newspapers. This means you’ll be able to find a digital version of a print magazine or newspaper article, just by selecting Bing Vision from your Nokia Lumia smartphone and aiming the camera at the article.

This will  give you global access to content from over 3,000 publications.

These excellent features are all built-in by default on all Nokia Lumia smartphones, so there’s no need to download any additional apps.

Have you tried any of them out yet on your Nokia Lumia 710, Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 900? Let us know, in the comments section below.

The bit I like the most is the visual search. I love pointing the camera at things and having the phone work out what it is.

To be honest, it took me a while to understand why the Lumia has a dedicated search button, thinking it was just for web searches. But once you get your head round its versatility, you find yourself using it more and more.

Bing is very good but it would be great when Nokia will add Google, Yahoo and other services and integrate them with search button.

I like everything in Windows Phone except the Start and Menu screens.

Great article, and super awesome features!  Wish you guys could have done a video demo, but I guess we can go to YouTube for that :)

I love how, through Bing, you can literally avoid having to load any apps to get the same functionality!  No need for Shazam, no need for a QR code reader app: I’m not even sure if there is an equivalent app on ANY app store that will give you the functionality of Bing Vision or Bing Voice search.  This is just a really great feature for Windows Phone.

Windows Phone truly is about integration and making using your smartphone not only super fun and amazing, but also efficiently.

I am so looking forward to purchasing a Nokia Lumia, and the Lumia 900 can’t get released soon enough!

Music, scout and voice does not work in Norway. I hope they’re working hard to get all features working worldwide. Bing! is quite amputated here.

Its absolutly USELESS tool! Why? Because its not supported by our country localization. I can use only stupid BING shorcut, thats all it does! Thank you NOKIA for doing nothing for foreign customers. I dont have NOKIA MUSIC -i can get this, its caused by copyright laws, but at least you could try to find a way, you did nothing to deliver us anything. I cant use voice recognition tools -not even in ENGLISH! its just blocked for us!; There is no predicted dictionary in my language (very difficult to upload words to the phone dictionary, hm?!) and by the way as ive already said, the search tool only opens bing in the browser. So you know what, JUST SHUT UP!

Hi Johny, I hear your pain but you didn’t mention which country you’re from. Can you tell us so someone can pass on the information to Microsoft to get it fixed? Cheers

I moved from UK to work in Germany and the Translate tool on the Search button have been invaluable for me, to translate menus at restaurants, product information on packages in supermarkets, signs and notices at public transport stations and letters and emails that I get sent in German. The translation is not 100% accurate but most of the time, I’m able to get the meaning of the text within a few taps on the keys of my Lumia 800.
