Nokia leads on mobile Internet traffic

GLOBAL – We are increasingly surfing the web on our mobile phones and, according to research by StatCounter, the brand of phone used most to access the Internet is Nokia.

In January 2011, the Web was reached on mobile phones by 4.3 per cent of us across the world. One year on, in 2012, that figure has doubled to 8.5 per cent.

Just three years ago, the percentage of people connecting to the Internet via their phone was only 0.7 per cent.

As well as charting this super-fast general growth, StatCounter also looked at which devices are being used to connect to the Net.

Nokia holds the top position, with 38.4 per cent of all the mobile Internet traffic generated by a Nokia phone, ahead of Apple with 27.6 per cent and RIM with 13.7 per cent.

The Internet has been available on your Nokia mobile phone for many years, but it’s only now that the technology  is capable of producing the same results and feel you’d expect from a computer

And there’s no reason to think Nokia won’t retain this No1 position on the Internet. The Next Web reports that Windows Phone 7 is performing really well, especially with social networking fans.

“One of the real positives for Microsoft Windows Phone 7 is how engaged its users appear to be with its devices,” says Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel. “Eighty one per cent of handset owners have used social networking on their device in the past month, higher than both iOS & Android. Meanwhile, three quarters have used GPS, indicating that its decision to include Nokia maps for free was a price worth paying to drive user engagement.”

I would defenitely use my mobile. Its always my first option to go online. Its a lot easier than my laptop because my phone is always handy. I dont have to wait for a long time for my laptop to boot up and then open up a browser and go online. Also the new Belle update on my N8 makes accessing internet a pleasure.

It would depend on where I am. Sitting here at my laptop reading this post, clearly the laptop.

But a lot of my RSS feeds, including Conversations, are delivered to my N9, so I have a better chance of reading it there.

Out and about, news, search, email – all done from my mobile.

Actually the Nokia traffic numbers should be even bigger, because Opera Mobile and MiniBrowser for Nokia using Desktop user agents, so they are not detected by servers as mobile devices.

Great! Now with that in mind, I hope Nokia provides us with the best mobile web browser experience in current and future Nseries and Lumia devices.

Let me tell you, that this is an incredible achievement considering that nokia browsers are almost as bad as RIM’s. Dont get me wrong, I love nookia phones, I have an N8, and in the past I have had X6, 5800, E73, and I am Planning no move to lumia 900 when it comes out, but at least symbian browsers, even in Belle, is not even close to for example opera mobile, and years of light of any android or IOs browser. Hope Windows Phone finally achieve this.

Its Microsoft that will provide that experience.

You are confusing the generic manufacturer (Nokia) with the technology creator and innovator (Microsoft).

I was referring more to the Nseries (if they ever continue it), but yeah, Microsoft, of course, for Lumia.

Yes of course Nokia leads but there is a slight complication for webmasters like me. I have been looking for a way to make adsense show on the very common Nokia devices. It shows perfectly on Higher versions of nokia but not on the lower ones.
