Nokia 808 PureView – revolutionary camera technology; great smartphone

Published by Ian Delaney on February 27, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain – Today we announce the Nokia 808 PureView. This is our first smartphone to feature our exclusive new PureView technology, which completely blows away any prior expectations about the quality of camera phone photography.

The Nokia 808 PureView features a 41-megapixel sensor with our highest performance Carl Zeiss optics to date and Nokia’s brand-new pixel oversampling technology.

Sorry, did you just say 41-megapixels?

Yes, that’s right. But this combination isn’t about shooting pictures the size of billboards! Instead, it’s about creating amazing pictures at normal, manageable sizes. There’s a combination of benefits.

The technology means that taking typically sized shots (say, 5 megapixels) the camera can use oversampling to combine up to seven pixels into one “pure” pixel, eliminating the visual noise found on other mobile phone cameras. On top of that, you can zoom in up to 3X without losing any of the details in your shot – and there’s no artificially created pixels in your picture, either.

Otherwise, you can use ‘Creative Shooting Mode’ to capture images at high resolution – 38 megapixels; then reframe, crop and zoom to find the best “picture within the picture” after the image has been shot and before saving it at convenient sizes for sharing and storage.

a revolution in camera phones

The oversampling technology also allows for significantly improved low light performance than previous camera phones, Compared to a typical optical zoom camera used at full zoom, the Nokia 808 PureView captures over 5x more light. Under normal lighting conditions, performance is also enhanced, as this combination allows for faster shutter speeds, reducing the effects of camera shake.

Video star

The excellent camera performance also extends to video. The camera allows for 1080p recording at 30fps, with 4X lossless zoom thanks to the big sensor and powerful image processing which handles over 1 billion pixels per second. At lower resolutions, the capabilities of the zoom increase, with 6X at 720p and up to 12X lossless zoom in nHD (640 x 360) recordings. Of course great video is nothing without great audio.

Here the Nokia 808 PureView also sets a new standard. The Nokia 808 PureView is the world’s first video recording device to allow recording without distortion at audio levels beyond the capability of human hearing. This allows you to even in the harshest of environment capture stereo CD-like audio quality.

Nokia 808 PureView white

It’s also a smartphone

Outside the camera, it’s also a great smartphone, of course! Inside, it’s got the latest Nokia Belle operating system with Feature Pack 1 enhancements. These enhancements allow improved performance, personalisation and entertainment options, with a new browser, the latest Nokia Maps and an improved notifications bar. One other great new feature is that the phone can deliver content recorded in surround sound to any stereo headphones, using technology from Dolby.

The screen is a four-inch, ClearBlack AMOLED display underneath Gorilla Glass, allowing for a big clear view of what’s going on, under any lighting conditions. Inside, there’s a 1.3GHz processor to keep everything humming. There’s 16GB of internal user memory, with support for MicroSD cards up to 32GB to contain all the pictures and video you’ll be shooting.

The device is remarkably pocketable considering how much there is inside. It’s only slightly larger than the Nokia N8 while the total weight, including the battery, is 169g. Talk time (over a 3G network) is rated at 6.5 hours, with a standby time of up to 540 hours.

Yeah it’s CPU is poor compared to the N9′s.*
It video DSP however is likely to be much better.
      Possibly it’s GPU too….

*1Ghz Cortex-A8: which is poor compared to some CPU’s used in other top-end smartphones.

What is the battery capacity on this? What i found with the N8 is that the battery runs out too quickly if you are going out and about to use it like a camera AND a smartphone (facebook etc) at the same time, doesn’t last me a full day.  This looks to have a removable battery at least we could bring a spare?

What’s the equ.focal length of the lens? 28mm?
I’m glad to see that Nokia is still improving on the already good imaging and sound recording capabilities of the N8. Could be my next phone, all the other obvious issues aside. But I get it, this has been long on the works.

I wonder what material the 808 uses. It looks like plastic/polycarbonate? Or is it anodyzed aluminium like the N8? Noone seems to write about that.

Nokia want to transition its customers to windows phone and they release this on Symbian?

    • Erkki Ruohtula

Indeed interesting, but a plus in my book! WP7 has strange limitations in media transfers, like no support for just copying your pictures to a MicroSD card. Symbian is probably still the better OS for a high-end cameraphone.

      • http://twitter.com/oguching guchi guchi

I can see why they went with symbian, since they control both hw and sw they can finetune the experience.

Whatever happen to beautiful “industrial” design (N8)? Doesn’t look appealing at all. Congrats on amazing camera work, but I would like to see some real photos first (and no, not those made with tripod, I want to see regular users handheld images).

Thak you! Have to say though, the way the camera pops out like a bubble at the back is sadly very unflattering… I do get the functionality and ergonomic aspects of why it is like that though…Just wish the curve would be bigger, so that it is all smoother, more seamless. Congrats for the device.

      • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

I guess that to make an amazing camera like this in a smartphone means that you have to explore different designs in order to make it fit.

Congrats to the team who made it.

Nokia is the KING. Can any phone beat the quality of the Nokia 808 PureView. I just love the PUREVIEW!!!!

Best thing about the PureView apart from it’s 41MP sensor is that it has Nokia Belle (Symbian) and not Windows Phone 7.5.

Belle it’s much better than the lock down Lumia! If you want to backup so large size images and videos through Zune or SkyDrive, be my guest, but I think that will be a pain!

I sure hope the camera UI has improved. Still not saving settings when the camera app is closed? Still four taps to change sharpness? These are two of my frustrations with the N8. If I see something I want to shoot quickly, it takes 10-20 seconds to get all settings ready and often the moment is gone by the time I’m done getting ISO, sharpness, etc ready. Why not have the camera remember last used settings and make it easier to navigate options?

Shame that it doesn’t have an active camera lens cover, like on their classic models N95 and N82. But still an improvement compared to the N8 that the unprotected lens cover can be cleaned easier. On the N8 you need cotton buds or similar to clean properly as the lens cover is regressed but still easy enough to reach with oily fingertips.

    • Lenard Gunda

At least the N8 lens cover is protected even when you start sliding the phone on different surfaces! I wonder if the cover on the 808 is also Gorilla Glass?

Google “lens pen” – fantastic tool for cleaning small camera lenses such as N95, N82 and N8. I have three lens pens: at home, at office and one packed to my camera pack for travelling.

      • Anonymous

Thanks for a tip .. need to get me some of those :)

      • Zaki Jaaskelainen

I know no one is reading these old comments but still:
So why would I need a lens pen? Because there is no lens cover in the phone. If they want to skip the lens cover then the only option is a lens that is flush with the body. If the lens is slightly recessed in the body, it’s still close enough for your fingers to reach to apply grease but you can’t reach it to wipe it with a cloth. If it’s deeper so you can’t reach it with your fingers then it will instead collect dust.

I was positively supprised when I got Nokia E7 with Belle. UI is no more stubling block for a Symbian device. If Symbian would only get faster and more precisely working web browser 808 Belle camera phone might be my following phone…

    • Lenard Gunda

E7 has 680Mhz processor, 808 has 1.3Ghz one, so if they do not screw up bigtime, it should be faster :)

Haha people should really stop hoping that Symbian will be back. This will be the last Symbian Phone.

It has nothing to do with the software. It will be pure hardware related.

Belle OS is great. 20.000 views just in one day!. You are moving in the right direction, Nokia.

Has nothing to do with Belle OS buddy. Its all about the camera.

If it would have Windows Phone, the amount of view would be easily been 5 times higher.

LOL! Yes, try yourself a Windows Phone and compare it with Symbian. Even the otdated and slowly killed symbian supports a lot more hardware and solutions than the WP phones. The Hardware is great, but together with the software they are even not worth the money.

Currently they have to sell it for free in the U.S. – yes, with contract. But for a flagship device this is very, very poor.

My last Nokia with contract I spent more than 200€ for it. And the last device I bought was for 600€. Look at ebay what the Lumia devices are worth and what you have to pay for a more than a year old Symbian device or even the Nokia N9 superphone.

Has nothing to do with Belle OS buddy. Its all about the camera.

If it would have Windows Phone, the amount of view would be easily been 5 times higher.

Belle OS is great. 20.000 views just in one day!. You are moving in the right direction, Nokia.

Instead of having a flagship Windows Phone with the Lumia 900, Nokia could have had a flagship phone overall by sticking this camera tech onto a Windows Phone device rather than what is likely to be the last ever Symbian smartphone. A missed opportunity… again.

You can expect to see PureView technology also in our other smartphones going forward.

      • Anonymous

I understand that and I heard that same response in the Q&A but this buzz about a 41 MP sensor should really have been utilised in pushing Nokia’s WP smartphone strategy. This would have been a perfect opportunity to bring on board those Symbian users with an N8 to the WP platform.

How will Nokia cope with the current situation of bugs they are legally bound to fix on the current S^3 range without delivering at least Belle PR1?! Would really love to have A commitment for separate bugfix or B commitment for Belle PR1 or later. Otherwise legal action will be inevitable at some point…

It’s not zooming with the lens. The lens is 8.02 mm fixed focal length. It zoome via the 41 megapixels by using less and less of the 41 megapixels to create the final image.

Well doesn’t this seem like a little overkill, I mean where are all the 20 and 30 MP phones were just going staight to 41? doesn’t seem like good marketing theory to me. I thought my n-8 was nice, truly you would have to have one hell of a display set up to get the wow factor.  I wonder, how big is a 41MP jpeg anyway?

i dont think u actually read and understood the article….it says
“ The technology means that taking typically sized shots (say, 5 megapixels) the camera can use oversampling to combine up to seven pixels into one “pure” pixel, eliminating the visual noise found on other mobile phone cameras.”
that pretty much explains why the mp is 41 (7×5=35mp but you hope you prtty much understand the idea) and it also tells you that photos will be 5mp in size

I expected as much. They simply have a better understanding of Symbian considering that is their home own OS. Thanks for the insight none the less.

Nokias engineers were smart enough to learn an altogether new OS and port their apps like maps to windows in very less turnaround time.. Don’t blame Nokia for the limitations in Windows.

simple answer – Windows Phone is not mature enough to handle complicated tasks like Symbian can! Once Nokia gives away all its patents to Microsoft, then they can do it by copying….

      • Anonymous

I wouldn’t say it’s not mature enough. Simply put, I think it would be more in the task of Nokia just not having enough experience with wp series to be able to do such a feat there.

        • http://www.facebook.com/thegadgetfreak Ajit Jalady

A typical MS troll…. We all know how long it took MS to bring copy-paste to Windows…. Also that false multitasking view… Do you remember the Microsoft KIN? LOL! Don’t blame Nokia for the limitations in Windows!

        Who cares? I’m not!

I will never again spent only a single cent in one of those awful Lumia phones. So if Nokia want’s to make some money they have to release a smartphone with this PureView technology. And Symbian is outdated, I moreover prefer a modern system.

Tizen’s the closest thing to what we could’ve had with MeeGo.
(still some huge differences in terms of dev environment)
So you may want to consider being an early adopter of the 1st Tizen phone.
            There’s still many Qns, & it may end-up being a total farce…
But at least it’s truly open, allows us control over our phone, & doesn’t lock us into “ecosystems”.
Last I heard the 1st Samsung Tizen ph will have specs similar to the SGSII.
I’m sure the hardware will be a solid start for what is their 1st Tizen phone
(I dont think it’ll be bleeding edge like the Android phones, that’ll come later)
I just hope Samsung & partners get the software & development environment working nicely.
            That’s the most critical part…..

          • Anonymous

I’m not very interested in Tizen because I don’t belief we could get anything mature out of it because of the used HTML5 framework. It sounds like a Android remake to me and I prefer always native applications on mobile platforms.

But perhaps we are able to get Mer and nemo running fine on such kind of devices.

          • Anonymous

The question is, where to go after Nokia has shown their customers their backside?

            I had Nokia devices since 1995. :-(

        • Anonymous

Please, enough with the spamming already.
Your squeals of indignation won’t change anything.
I’m also very unhappy about the “WP-only” strategy.
But it is what it is….
If you don’t like it you can walk away from Nokia.
Which is probably what I’ll be doing after my N9.

      • Anonymous

        Who cares? I’m not!

I will never again spent only a single cent in one of those awful Lumia phones. So if Nokia want’s to make some money they have to release a smartphone with this PureView technology. And Symbian is outdated, I moreover prefer a modern system.

Oh yeah, now you have only to release the same with a hi-resolution Display, a dualcore system, 1GB Ram, the same OS like the Nokia N9 and a lense cover to protect my new baby.

The only thing you would need is to put a price label on it. For 1000€ I would buy it without thinking a second about it. 1500€ and I would have to think a little bit about it.

And Nokia, if you ever consider to put the same camera module in a Lumia device with Windows Phone ensure to put something below 50€ on the price tag. I will never again spent more than 50€ for a useless toy!

MeeGo with PureView 41MP, FM-Transmitter, HDMI, easy-to-swap-battery, 4″ screen 16:9 AMOLED, IR, BT4.0, NFC, 64GB, Xenon and LED, USB-Otg, LED-light notifications (I miss that so much since my N900 died) … but there you have it. The Nokia phone I’m waiting for.

Okay, worth 1000€ for me. 1500€ with Quertz Keyboard and a slider to protect the camera lense.
With symbian it’s worth to try it, to recomment it to friends and play with it at the store. 500€ should be okay for such a device. But with Windows Phone not even 50€. I would prefer to buy a new Lumix Digicam instead.
And hence the N9 has notifications directly on the amoled screen there is no need for a additional notification LED. :-)

      • Anonymous

The on-screen notifications on my N9 and N8 is cool, but the blue led-light was so damn cute!

I would prefer maemo, MeeGo Harmattan or something very similar to it.
And to fulfil your needs a Dalvik Emulator could do a good job on such a device.

Android? Have you tried Symbian? Personally I’ve always considered it superior, especially now we have belle. My galaxy ended up on ebay, and I know the iphone is somewhat lacking in multiple areas. Symbian is king, but the badge is not in fashion.

Android can’t record phonecalls nor has FM-transmitter.

Besides why Android when Nokia has Meego. Just clean that up a bit make it fully functional and bring on an N9-01.

As soon as the buttons on the frontpanel of the Lumia device are software made and easily replaceably by something different I will consider to buy again a Lumia device. But only if I’m officially able to replace this crappy Windows Phone system with something decent with full hardware support made by Nokia.

        Comparable to a 5D II? Hardly…
Maybe comparable to my old Rebel XT with a beat up kit lens, but still not quite there.  It’s great for a camera phone, but let’s not go crazy… still a little soft in optimal lighting conditions, especially with a lens that is supposed to be Zeiss?  I wonder if that’s a product of the oversampling? Maybe I’m asking for too much?

I have Canon Ixus SD880 and 5DMkII with several L-series lenses. I can see difference between pocket camera photo and good DSLR photo in a fraction of seconds. This is the same as with appreciation for great design vs. Chinese copycats or enjoying Michelin-star fine dining vs. coldish fast food – if you cannot tell the difference, then be happy that you can get kicks out of crappy stuff. For us who can clearly see/hear/taste the difference the differences between pro-level DSLR and pocket camera and PureView and any other mobile camera are just simply obvious. The PureView on 808 seems to take far better photos than my 8Mpx Ixus SD880. Great colors, impressive dynamic range, etc. Nokia hould show comparison photos taken with pocket camera or other mobile phone to demonstrate the difference. Looking forward to see PureView in Lumia!

My guess is this isn’t going to wind up in the U.S. due to it using Symbian instead of Android or Windows platforms.  Shame.  The camera tech looks incredible.  Nokia could make $$$ by licensing the tech out to the other OS devices, at least.  Maybe in 2-3 years this will filter down to other phones and platforms.

Ha, back in the day I used to think my N73 was “a camera with a phone attached.” The N8 surpassed obviously that, taking the mantle.

But this…all I can say is wow. Interestingly, I like the design. It flows, to my eye at least.

Very, very tempting. Well done to the design/imaging team.

      What’s wrong with Symbian?

      • Anonymous

What worng with symbian? Everything! No apps (which are everything in a smartphone), pretty clunky, no custimizability, and not very beautiful. Android or WP7 would have been much better

        • Anonymous

apps is really nothing to do with if a phone is a smartphone or not …rather the opposite … if the phone is “smart” all the functions you need are built in..

unlike some of the competitors where the devices is useless until you connect it to the internet and start downloading functions lacking from the start.

the idea of an application store is smart however .. you develop the basics ..and sometimes hardly that …then you let others spend time developing the rest …then people buying a phone for $700 have to spend even more money to get the function they want … and developers can make some money..and the owner of the store earns money without having to develop anything ..  …
and if the downloaded application has issues….you just wash your hands and blame the small developer..

a smartphone in the past was a phone that was a complete devices..from day one.

Today a smartphone can hardly even make a call, but you can download “apps” that fixes this. and sometimes you need to have a computer to activate it??

and the only smart is the manufacturer earning tons of money selling a product that is just a basic pretty shell with a system only half made.

and by the way .. you can customize the h*ll out of Symbian ..and always have. . have you ever used Symbian?

  • Martin Panzner

Amazing, I am still impressed by the performance of my N8. So if this one will be even better, especially in low light conditions – why having a “proper camera” anymore?

By the way: from my Experience Nokia Belle is not worse then the Android on my Galaxy Tab!

Will it be possible to add a raw format? :P It’s pretty much aimed at people doing photography, so a raw format (DNG which is open) would be nice. But I guess it’s too big. But how big would such a file be?

Also. How did they manage to get a phone to do so much processing that it can process 34 megapixels into 1080p/720p/nHD up to 30 times per second? That is amazing :O I know it has two CPUs, one for the resampling, but still, it’s amazing =)

How come a breakthrough phone is launched and no info on Nokia’s homepage or Nokia Belle’s homepage.
Too much burocracy to get it approved or no good management it seems.
Not a good move, what a pity.
I really like Nokia but it has to change to survive.

(And I do no comment about not using an OS that has few camera applications like instagram, tadaa, retrocamera et al)

Because he hates it from bottom of his heart, but who cares if Symbian still making money for Nokia?

      • Anonymous

Elop is absolutely out of mind with his childish windows phones. Even though Lumia is quiet a while on the market I haven’t heard barely anything good about them and even big newspapers don’t see them as a concurrence to Android, iOS, Symbian/Meego. Not because windows phone is bad or anything, but because its so limited and lacking tons of functions/apps – even Meego has now more useful apps (those which increase the user experience). Windows phone is good and I’m sure many people prefer them, but they are in many ways not real smartphones and don’t come with anything special – this way you can’t win against the big competitors. I
A phone like Nokia 808 with its camera, or a N9 with a revolutionary OS and functionality – those are phones you can win with and those are products you need to advertise and support (what Nokia fails to do). For example just think of how many people would love to have an N9 but its still not available in most important phone countries and just available with expensive imports or contract-less purchases. Or how many would have loved a new Symbian but switched to Android or iOS because Elop first killed any other platform than WP with his announcements.
Nobody talks bout Lumia except for Elop and his recruited fellows – open your eyes Nokia, please – it’s time!
I’m very happy to hear though bout this new Symbian phone and all the updates like Nokia Belle or Meego PR 1.2 – those products will keep Nokia alive :)

I appluad Nokia for having the foresight and courage to truly design something revolutionary – a camera in a cell phone with a big sensor (1/1.2″).

There is nothing on the market that can even compare. Finally a cell phone
that is worth carrying for its camera feature.I have a micro four-third
sensor-based Panasonic GF-1 since 2009and the photographic quality is
superb. That’s one reason I nevercared for any cell phone camera – they are
just bad. Though some times I wish for a cell phone that has a decent camera with a big sensor and quality lens.In general, the megapixel war is nothing but a marketing gimmick. (5~8MP is
all any point and shoot camera really need, most camera phones really only need 3MP because they cramp too many tiny photosites into a tiny sensor and result in bad photos). The
mostimportant elements are the sensor size and lens optical  characteristics. I was concerned reading about 41MP from this phone, but upon further reading I understood that Nokia does not actually make this phone output an absurdly noisy 41MP picture. It just captures a lot more pixels for substitute of optical zoom (which is very difficult to do on a cell phone without increasing its thickness). In this aspect, by keeping the image to 3 to 8MP, it achieved the equivalent of optical zoom without sacrificing quality like digital zoom usually does.

Nokia made something revolutionary by putting such a large
camera sensor into a cell phone (relatively speaking) and that will redefine
    the camera phone design.

    • http://www.arcticexposure.no/ Alexander Evensen

You can save the 34/38 megapixel image if you want. There is an option for this in the camera settings.

808 PureView is game changing technology, again Nokia deliver with what looks to be a superb camera. Very cleaver use of high megapixels to manage zoom features. Just Brilliant Nokia.

Now lets hope that this gets released world wide! Well at least in the UK :-)

What I’d like to know is does the camera interface remember your settings from one use to the next? It doesn’t on the N8 remember my flash settings, which is annoying as I grab the N8 to take a few quick snap shots indoors and need red-eye reduction on. Sometimes missing the moment.

The only thing missing on symbian or nokia belle, is a good social network integrated in the os app, with push notifications and messages, for example for facebook, twitter as windows phone’s have. Also it would be nice foursquare notifications and a goog integration with nokia maps chek-in app.

That is the only reason making me doubt to stay with symbian or move to windows phone.

Also, could any body post a hands on the 808, not the camera, but the operating system , It would be nice to see Belle working on the 1.3 Ghz processor

    808 pureview’s price is a bit hefty, i am afraid n9 16G cyan/magenta will be my next phone, australian dollar 389 for n9 16

Is there a front-facing camera on the Pureview 808?

On the ads, I can’t find one. Yet, on those live demonstration devices at MWC, I can see a small round (camera?) hole next to the Nokia logo. No mention of front-facing camera in the specs.

    I am confused.

Also, will it really inflate costs to include a capacitive touch display for ALL Asha phones? It about time to red rid of resistive touch displays, even for touch-and-type feature phones.

I love what you’re doing with the S40 platform, but I’m not pleased to see resistive touch display still around.

The oversampling technique behind Pureview sounds awesome! Any idea if it will be implemented for older phones like the N8 in a future camera firmware update? I could live with 3 MP sized stills if it means improved low light performance.

    • Anonymous

From what I understood the sensor really has 41 MP (and is gigantic, even most of the high end point & shoots don’t have a sensor this big!), so no update for you.

However you can always resize your photos yourself as long as you get them taken. I recommend Lightroom for denoising, it works amazing (you only have to/should remove color noise, that is the thing that is very distracting, the luminance noise makes it look like film grain, which can even be quite pleasant). Of course the camera should denoise as little as possible for it to work.

It would be great if Nokia phones would support RAW (preferably DNG, but anything that Lightroom is able to read would be great). Especially with point & shoot cameras the quality difference is unbelievable when you compare the camera JPEG output with what you can easily do with the RAW files.

    Hello,

what does “recording without distortion at audio levels beyond the capability of human hearing” refer to? “Level” typically refers to amplitude, and “capability of human hearing” measures between around 20 and 20 KHZ in terms of frequency, both of which have nothing to do with (digital or analogue) distortion.

I think Nokia should give this camera king a bomb to public. Preferably to have at least a dual-core 1Ghz to 1.5Ghz (to follow the trend), and use 768MB – 1GB Ram and a higher screen resolution. May be this will be the last Symbian phone :p

Ok, now how about a version with a proper smartphone OS? Meego or better yet WP7? Belle may be good now, but just being good isn’t enough anymore. WebOS was good. Meego was good. Bada was… ok, I won’t go that far. What people want nowadays is an ecosystem, and WP7 really is on the bottom end of what is acceptable, only the great UI makes it bearable.

Please, WP7, higher resolution screen and perhaps a faster CPU and this may very well be my next phone (currently using an old Android and a not working LG Optimus 7 (memory problems…), loved the Optimus 7, the Android not so much because it never works properly). So far it is either one of the many WP7 phones (the Lumia 800 is nice, but doesn’t really stand out from the crowd) or one of the 2 Chinese high end Android phones, Meizu MX or Xiaomi M1. But the 808 as a WP7 phone at a reasonable price…

I think this is a great offering and am really disappointed in all of the negative comments here.  Symbian is a great smartphone OS with enough processor speed.  Now we’re at a point where it can truly shine, and with the right hardware – which the clearview has (and could be slightly better, looking forward, say with a product life of 5-7 years), we have a GREAT device.  Ergonomics are of the utmost importance with devices.  Cables should not get in the way of holding the device comfortably in landscape mode but should also be  good in portrait – a problem with my N8 – but seemingly solved with the 808 (headphone jack was moved from left to right)

In an ideal world, there would be a second SD slot and microsoft’s ReadyBoost technology for flash memory could bump up the phone’s RAM for video/audio/photo editing and capture – and the USB port would be a 3.0.  If the HDMI out can send a video and audio feed real time, this product would make a great webcam, and of course…

If Nokia has been able to tweak its FM transmitter to improve audio fidelity and battery life and is working on developing new battery technology in general, then I would certainly side with Symbian in any smartphone battle royale.  The hardware is the weak point with most products and until recently, Nokia’s weak link was an OS that lagged with slow hardware.

Aside from these concerns, the 808 ClearView looks like a fantastic product.  Any OS glitches should be dealt with by now from a software AND hardware standpoint.
the 808 ClearView needs to have RAW image output if Nokia expects to have its product used by professionals and enthusiasts in the most exciting new ways.  37MP HDR imaging?  Come on, Nokia.  Spend a few more months on this product before you release it.  Improve battery life, work on integrating your other services with push functionality via web (maps/drive/transport, list widgets, calendar service compatible with office/google), and build wifi hotspot functionality into the device without needing to buy a 3rd party app and you’ll have a product far better than anything else on the market. People say they want android/windowsphone with this product, but if I wanted a tablet I’d use a tablet.  Interface this product with Windows 8, OSX, Ubuntu, Android, and Chromebook, and you’ll have a product that will be able to work for everyone.

That’s really the lynchpin with great products – they don’t always work for everyone.  Change the game with this one, folks – I emplor you.

the 808 ClearView needs to have RAW image output if Nokia expects to have its product used by professionals and enthusiasts in the most exciting new ways.

Many questions about price and availability.
At this stage we have announced only the following details:

Available from Q2, 450 euros exc local taxes and subsidies, local availability plans will be announced closer to availability.

As for development of this technology, you will see aspects of this technology used in future products but exactly the details of that and when are related to future roadmaps which we do not disclose ahead of official announcements of individual products.

So disappointed Nokia has not seen fit to keep a future for Maemo6x (MeeGo) in the high end.
Been disappointed in “so” many ways in the past 5yr, yet oddly enough I stood by Nokia.
      Not any more, the N9 & the 808 is it, good-bye Damien/Nokia…

Hi! I was wondering what is the maximum file size when recording videos with this device?  If it can record 25Mbps and the maximum filesize is fat32′s ~4,2GB, then it could record 168 seconds , less than 3 minutes that kind of video quality.  So It has 16GB internal memory + 32GB extension, right?

As an amateur photographer, this is incredibly interesting for me, perhaps as a sidekick for an APS-c cam or my SLR.  It’s a fascinating concept and I’d love to see if it could be a viable sidekick. or even primary, for low-light concert shooting.

I’m also glad that Nokia has put an end to the megapixel wars and started educating people on how more MP isn’t always better, but higher quality ones and pixel density is the most important thing.  I wish they could push this point further and make it a focal point because then it will drive the point how that Nokia is currently more advanced than most of the photo industry that is still chasing increasing megapixels of low-quality on ever-shrinking sensors and slower lenses.  Nokia essentially did the exact opposite of the industry trend, reducing MP (via downscaling) to a reasonable size, faster lenses, and larger sensors.

    Hi Nokia,

Can we expect any kind of Upgrade in the Hardware by the time 808 gets Launched like say the Resolution or the Battery since its in Proto form as of now ?

I’m curious about these supposedly unretouched photographs linked in “Update 2″… The EXIF data in the third picture, the one with the carabiner, shows it was created, generated and digitized at 3:04 AM, yet it’s clearly daylight.  And no, it wouldn’t be 3PM, aka 1500. Even at the poles, it’s much darker at 0300.  Unless these were taken close to the center of the south pole???  Then, I could see why it’s daylight at 0300.

Makes me wonder just how “unretouched” these pictures really are.

Hi, i request before pureview is launch, can you make sure the camera can start up fast, really fast, currently using N8, calling out the camera is a pain, it’s just slow compared to a lot of android phone out there, even with dedicated camera button (pls make sure it’s there as well), when press, it wait too long. (few seconds still too long for today standard). This make this wish come true ya. Make it really fast when we press the camera button.

Symbian is still the safest OS around with its signing system… And Belle has catched up a lot. Belle’s not that bad after all.
What Nokia can do is to introduce more Amazing and Free apps to the Market, such as Loop, etc. which they will just like they did after N8…

MP3 Cutter, RAR extractor, mp3 tag editor, etc. were some of the apps I wanted but couldn’t get from app store.

I request Nokia to keep Symbian (forget Android/ WM) and invest your money and efforts into Symbian and make it better than the competition. Make more free apps. Keep churning out updates bi-yearly should do it. That’s it…!
This is coming from a N8 owner.

Makes waaaay more sense to keep Maemo6x (M-H) which is what was planned* before Elop came along.

*Symbian was to be gradually phased-out or would occupy the mid-range.

True. It’s odd how so many people don’t realize how capable Symbian^3 really is.
Sure there’s been issues with the UI/UX over the years…
But even to this day, the built-in functionality is 2nd to none.
Maemo6x (MeeGo-Harmattan) often faces the same problem of “ignorance breeding contempt”.

        • Anonymous

With some marketing MeeGo Harmattan could easily dominate 20% Marketshare and not 2% like the simple and unpopular Windows Phone phones.
Look at all those unsatisfied Android customers. Nokia could gave those easily a alternative. But currently there is nothing compareable out there and they have to stick to android.

        …not within the next 4yrs?

It feels really strange to me for such a big company to step back from the growing smartphone market for at least 4 years. Thats a tooo long timeframe in such a fast growing and changing market!
Android is already taking over what Symbian and maemo/MeeGo was before. Why is Nokia sleeping?

          They don’t think they are…
WP (apparently) is the only solution needed for the top-end.
          Time will tell….

          One thing is certain….
If it’s a success there’ll be no Maemo derivatives in the future.
Despite their assurances that there may be…

          • Anonymous

            Yeah, sure. April, April!

If I compare the possible features Windows Phone is only able to replace some Featurephones. Not all, but some. Okay, there is a capable webbrowser built in. But the rest of the system?

It is a step backward before there were smart devices. It is like a iPhone 3 years before, but without the possiblity to make a Jailbreak. And nothing compareable to Symbian, WebOS, Bada, maemo, MeeGo, Android or even BB10.

So Nokia still need Smartphones to compete in the Smartphone Market. Very expensive featurephones are just able to attract only a few people. Or why are there in the best case only 3% WP’s out there?
If you produce a featurephone it must be as cheap as possible. If you produce a smartphone it should be able to compete with other smartphones in the market and should have the potential to replace a laptop and act totally independent from a desktop PC.

iOS has proven you don’t need to be heavily featured to be successful.
It only become decently featured in the last year or so.
Whatsmore WP8x will correct many of WP7x’s deficiencies.

Yes, but without Terminal and root access they can keep it. And moreover, do you really belive Microsoft will remove  zune and bing search from the Windows platform?

And moreover, I’m sure we will still be unable to capture screenshots, install native applications or add a new bluetooth profile if we need it. And if WP8x will add real multitasking I will belief it only after I checked it. WP7 is a big fail. And perhaps they are only in the US able to have a sucess. They are easily influenceable and have a big, not very intelligent crowd. Or which folk would vote for a George W. Bush a second time?

This is so stupid, why would you need a 41 mega pixel camera on your phone? Is everyone a scientist or something? What matters is the quality of the photograph. Anything more than 13 mega pixels is useless because you can barely tell the difference in pixels after that… Why don’t they just hype the quality instead of pixel size? It’s all about talk and I guess 41 mega pixels sounds amazing to the average consumer and will buy it just for that… They don’t think about the actual quality that is on a little bitty phone. It’s all about who has the most pixels on cameras these days and if you have more you’re bound to sell more phones! Get an DSLR camera or something, that will really hold the best pictures…

Sounds like you’ve failed to comprehend how they’ve marketed it.
MP count has been only a small part of that…..
Anyone who knows about camera tech (I mean really knows) appreciates the other elements of this tech.

      • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Exactly. A lot of people stopped reading at the headline. This is not about taking massive photos; it’s about taking better photos.

    • Samarth Singh

So you mean to say they should hide the fact that it is 41MP? Or underemphasize it?

Nokia’ve emphasized it enough that this megapixel count has more benefits like zoom, oversampling, pixel perfect picture, etc.
What more do you want them to do?

And Why are you generalizing that everyone needs a DSLR?… No, I don’t want to carry a DSLR no matter how good it is…Maybe I want all the quality that comes in the mobile size. And other features like music, clock, phone, etc, etc in one package.
So, should I buy a DSLR just because you said so?

check how does it zoom omg..i got a 14.1 MegaPixels camera cannon with great sensor, but it cant be compared to that 41 monster…its x4 optical zoom cant be compared to the 41 mp zoom neither…13 is just not enough for a really HD photos..

Try doing some research, then you’ll realize why it performs well.
Zilch to do with the MP count…..

I’m not absolutely sure that Connor read the article as opposed to just the title. This is a bold move by Nokia who will surely be looking to step back into the smartphone ring  after the failure of Symbian to do battle with the new “big market players”. This an innovative step towards lossless magnification whilst compromising for the device’s insufficient storage capacity. Further to this, I like that the move seems to reflect growing consumer demand for a smartphone capable of eliminating the need for a stand-alone camera.

This is not a gimmick, The Nokia Pureview 808 oversamples to get really nice quality images, 41MP resized to say 12MP or eve 5MP would virtually eliminate most lower ISO noise, additionally it will allow for a nice digital zoom akin to something optical and has a Zeiss ND8 3-Stop filter built into it that can be enabled or disabled (it is physical not some lame exposure compensation rubbish),So you can get nice long exposures for motion blur or creamy water or help out the bracketing recover bright areas for an HDR mode!
The Sensor is a little smaller than a Micro 4/3 @ 1/1.2″ and the lens aperture is f/2.4 I believe, which gives you the equiv DOF you get at f/5 on an APS-C DSLR and that is a huge advantage over other camera phones or even most Point and Shoot cameras which can only achieve decent DOF buy using some sort of multishot mode like sony or a digital bokeh filter like the Pentax Q has

It also helps with low light – the bane of most camera phones – there are so many more inputs to choose from.

Can anyone please link me with some Pureview Pics… not full resolutions, (I have them). Rather, I want to see some 8MP and some 5MP “oversampled” pics, and some zoomed pics if possible… I somehow can’t find them..
    Anyone?

No doubt that Nokia 808 will be the best cameraphone in the world.
I know that have dolby 5.1, but, how about the sound quality? Frequence response, noise level, dynamic range, THD, and Stereo Crosstalk? With and without headphones attached?

    Thank´s in advance.

    • Anonymous

Very similar to the N9 in those areas.
(cept N9 doesn’t do DD 5.1, only DH)
I saw all the data somewhere before.
I will try to dig-it-up and post it later.

    And btw for all:
You should know the 808′s sensor (1/1,2″) is bigger then Canon S100′s sensor(1/1,7″) – cost of the S100: about 400€ and you can’t call someone, surf in the internet and so on!!! ;)

Guys, can anyone tell me how can the 808 best process the content recorded in stereo (like ripped mp3′s, mp4 videos, etc.) in accordance with Dolby?

6.1 content is delivered in Stereo headsets, fine. But what about Stereo content?
What kind of processing does the Stereo-recorded content (2 channels) face due to Dolby’s involvement?

    • Anonymous

As i understand it nothing would need to happen, it’d just be standard stereo LPCM.

    What is DOF?

    • jalyst

It’s almost as bad as a inane comment posted in a article that’s almost 4mths old, that’s what it is.
A quick search of the article reveals no use of DOF anyway…

You can purchase the Nokia 808 in the USA on Amazon.

  • hs 67

Who knows, this smarthphone could have the same fate as the N9…. Why to buy it? To spend money for a dead OS?

    • jalyst

If the N900/N9 expereince is any indciation the dead os mantra is just that, a mantra.
I can tell you from expereince over the years that it means very little.

      • hs 67

Is your experience. For me, not worth to spend hundred euros for a Nokia abandoned OS.

        • jalyst

Well, as always it’s never as simple as that, depends on a users list of wants/needs & if it meets them.
And in reality, for the vast majority of users it will do just fine in that regard, as will Maemo5/6x.

  • Edison Togol

    wow,

  • Mario Galaxy

When it will be available in Canada?

    • jalyst

Maybe try looking/searching/asking in more logical places to get your answer.

Sorry about that, I’ve now found the correct link.
