The Nokia N9 software update you must have

Published by Adam Fraser on March 6, 2012

Nokia N9 group

GLOBAL – Power up your Nokia N9, turn on your WiFi and get ready to download the latest software update, known as PR1.2. Why should you update? To receive a huge array of added features, such as video calling, improved photography and enhancements to Nokia Drive, plus so much more.

Last week, the Nokia software update team began slowly rolling out this new update to just a handful of select countries. One week later, this update is now available to more than 70 per cent of all handsets, with more receiving the updates over the coming weeks. If you do not see an update notification, just wait a little while more, or contact your local operator to find out if it they have enabled it.

OK, that was the important business-y bit. Now, let’s get go into more detail on some of the main features* included in this update.

Keeping your apps and games organised is now really easy, as the Applications view now supports folders. Pressing and holding anywhere on the application screen will give you the option to add a new folder, where you can tuck things away into. Nice, neat and easy.

Nokia N9 Applications Nokia N9 continuous shutter

Here’s one for camera enthusiasts: you’ll be happy to hear that the Nokia N9’s 8-megapixel camera now supports continuous shooting. Even better – the zero lag shutter in continuous shooting mode means that the camera is so fast, what you see (in the screen when you snap the shot) is what you get (in the final image).

Once you’ve changed the settings in the camera, just hold your finger down on the capture button for a continual stream of photos – nine, to be precise. You’ll get three frames per second, and will never have to miss those fast moving scenes that just tend to whizz past your eyes.

When you’ve captured that perfect image of your friend, you can upload it straight to your social sites. While this isn’t new, the ability to tag your friends in that photo is, using the Nokia N9’s new face recognition technology for your photos.

This update also includes the ability to make video calls with Google Talk, using the full power of the front-facing camera. You can download the Google Talk Video Call app from Nokia Store – for free.

When in a video call, switching to the main camera on the back is a great way of showing other people in the call what’s going on around you. Even better if you’re shopping in a mall and want to get your friend’s opinion on a cool outfit right away, don’t you think?

Nokia Drive on your N9 got even better with a few nice touch-up features. It now includes routing options, so you can avoid that toll bridge or motorway, if you’d prefer. With the new Favourites feature, you can now sync, add and remove  locations with maps.nokia.com. Say you want to get to the new mall in your city but don’t know how to get there. You’re in front of your PC and you find the mall on Nokia Maps. Add it to your favourites, and the next time you sync your favourites folder on your N9, the saved location will appear there. Select it, and you’re ready to go.

And if you’re driving, your N9 will also help you keep to the speed limit thanks to the speed limit alerts. Very useful when in unfamiliar territory. Just think about it – the software update is free, but could save you some money in speeding tickets.

You can now share the media stored on your phone, via your TV and games console**. Let the rest of the people in the room see your holiday snaps, or that video of something hilarious you saw at the weekend. It’s all about sharing, without wires.

Other updates include software update notifications for 3rd party apps in Nokia Store, support for creating playlists and deleting songs in the music player, and also access to the global company address list in Mail for Exchange – something business professionals will appreciate.

Also there’s improved web browsing history, improved copy and paste features for web and documents. And as if it wasn’t smart enough, the Nokia N9 can now say hello in five new language scripts, including: Thai (ภาษาไทย); Hebrew (עִבְרִית); Persian (فارسی); Vietnamese (tiếng Việt); and Kazakh (Қазақтар).

As you can see, this update adds some significant improvements to your mobile experience. So, look out for the update notification on your Nokia N9, or check for it manually by finding the updates icon of your Nokia N9. Alternatively, head to swipe.nokia.com or the Nokia N9 page on your local Nokia site for more details.

Have you updated yet? Of course you have. Why wouldn’t you want all those great new features? What are you most excited about this update? Use the comments section below, to let us know.

* Some features not available in the China download
** Not all TV sets and game consoles support file sharing, or enable sharing of all media file types

I have nothing to add. You have said it all. PR1.2 has made a good phone even better. My favourites are folders and Drive updates.

The font is the same size. They just added space between the lines so that it worked better for some countries alphabets where they have umlauts, acutes etc which were overlapping on the previous line spacing.

Oh, this seems like a fantastic update. I did however get hooked on Windows Phone and my N9 is in a desk drawer for now. I’ll update should I get tired of my Lumia 710.

    • Anonymous

I have both an N9 and a Lumia 800. The N9 with PR1.2 is definitely the top dog at the moment. Update now and you might just find your 710 in a desk drawer. ;)

      • Francois Magny

The N9 is such a beautiful device and the UI is a winner. The music player, the gallery, the icons, everything works so well together. BUT, the lack of a back button, the Zune-less music experience and the issues with Global Address book were too much for me to handle. Like you said: I might get tired of the 710 plastics very quickly.

N9 web browser still not supporting flash players, no tabs-interface, does not have adblock filter, text re-flow on zoom is really poor quality. Disappointed as heavy mobile internet user, will stay on android device with more user friendly web-browsers until next upgrade…  :-)

Firefox mobile version “fennec” will soon have full flash support and also Opera released opera mobile browser for N9 so I guess we have 2 good web browsers already :)

Why do you need tabs when you have swipe interface? you can open pages in new windows and swipe between them, its much more MeeGo-like! The zoom is perfect, I find text reflow quite annoing sometimes on the Opera or Fennec. Compared to Opera and Fennec the Nokia browser is the most smooth and easy to use, but the other have some good options, too

All the things you say it doesn’t have are plus points in my opinion – ok, maybe not the lack of AdBlock. No Flash is a bonus. The one window per site instead of tabs is easier to navigate using the swipe UI and you get a very minimal interface. Text reflow – no thanks.

However, most of them are ‘fixed’ by simply installing Opera or Firefox, both of which are available from the store. In PR1.2 they also added the ability to set another browser other than the built in one as the default too.

You make it sound as though the N9 browser is rubbish when it’s simply not.

Had this on my N9 here in the UK (yes, the UK Nokia!) for a week now and the main benefit isn’t something you’ll see on the screen – it’s the power consumption. I get about another 4 hours out of my N9.

Lets hope these updates continue. There’s still a couple of niggles to iron out (no ETA in Drive for instance and Mail sometimes ‘stops responding’) but so far the N9 team have been doing some great work.

      Thanks Shaun.

It’s great to hear of some more improvements, other than the ones we’ve mentioned above and glad you’re enjoying the update.

Thanks for the suggestions, too, I’m sure the team are taking note.

I updated mine as soon as it became available. I think my phone is a bit snappier and has lost its chopines when switching between open apps/screens. I thought the FFC would work with Skype, but will try with Google Talk as it is my pref anyway. Love the folder option and definitely need to try the “hello” thing…LOL…Thank you Nokia.

Thanks to Team MeeGo Harmattan for this superb update. Now I can access the flash controls right in the camera’s viewfinder and not under settings – very useful – and I absolutely love being able to create my own playlists. I can’t seem to get the GTalk video app to work at all, not even with its recent update (it makes my N9 turn into a grumpy 85 year old woman, and I get a strange, blank 4TH homeview…) But I wouldn’t video chat anyway so no bother there. The homeviews snap back and forth and the scrolling is like…what’s the word everyone uses these days? Oh yes, BUTTER. I love it, I love my N9, I love the work the team have done, I love Nokia for producing this and shipping it while the Windows planet was imminently crashing into us… Thank you. My N9 just drank a six-pack of Red Bull.  :)

I’m happy to hear that you have liked the update! N9 team has done big effort, but it’s all with the passion and love for N9.

We have noticed some of our customer having similar problems as you after the Google Talk update. For some just having few reboots done helps to recover the Google Talk Video Call, but at least this should help, so uninstall first the older version
      and retry the installation:

      Go
to Settings > Applications > Manage applications. Select
Gtalk video call and select Uninstall.

      Install Gtalk video call application
      again from Nokia Store.

      I don’t believe you re-partitioned…
Even if you did that can causes all sorts of problems.
Please point to the steps you employed.

Also the “puny 4GB” you refer to is far from unique.
Android phones for e.g. use a similar partitioning scheme.
A large chunk is taken-up for uses other than apps.
      It perfectly normal….

If you didn’t correctly asses that you’d need a 64GB N9 before buying that’s your problem.

      I see the article now…
This approach is known to be flawed.
l’ll dig up the info soon if I can.

On PR1.2 some apps refuse to update using the built in updater. I hope Nokia fixes this. (bad move to close the bug tracker btw)

    • Anonymous

They closed the tracker because they’re no longer taking feature requests.
They had mount loads of such requests submitted…
They made “very clear” that they’ll still take bug reports.
So long as they’re well thought out, & the user is certain they’re real.
You submit them at the Nokia dev forum….

Hi there, im Benoit and im from Mauritius island…
Ive tried updating via wifi but it doesn’t work…Is there any other way to update my phone???  Because my update is cancelled after it says “Preparing device for new updates, please wait” Please help me…My Nokia sucks without those new updates…:(

It usually works, you have to give it time, it’s pretty slow.
Make sure you have a decent WiFi signal too…
If you’re absolutely sure OTA updating isn’t working…
      Go to the “N9 / N950″ sub-forum at talk[dot]maemo[dot]org.
Look for the thread that’s stuck to the top of that sub-forum.
      Read that thread…..

It also happens to be vastly more hackable than any other commercial OS in existence*…
So even though Maemo6 was butt-fucked by the Elop/MS deal, it’ll limp on like no other OS could.

*cept for WebOS which isn’t commercial in any true sense, & Tizen which is still an unproven quantity

Just wanted to write this email to thank the NOKIA N9 Developers Team. I bought my N9 last October in Switzerland. I haven’t receive the PR 1.2 update wet, but I love this phone anyway. I’m so tired on IPhones and all buzzes around them (people now look all the same – I guess the world turn back into Communism following extreme capitalism and narrow minded consumers behavior!)

To be precise, I actually received the last PR 1.1 update a week ago when connected to wifi in Germany (weird coincidence?). I know the Swiss have the reputation to be analytical and appreciate when things work well, so I guess I’ll have to wait another 6 months for PR 1.2… (!).

This previous update doesn’t have all improvements from the PR 1.2 version, but it makes some nice improvements though (among others, touch screen much more precise and sensitive + better battery management + improved music player).

The only frustration is to miss the “must to have apps” such as “whatsapp”; “SBB mobile” (specific to Switzerland but allows us to purchase virtual train tickets). I cannot use it for work either… since my employer is now requesting “Good”, a sort of encrypted Outlook app which is only available for IOS, Blackberry or Androids phones…

I’m eager to receive the last update, but please, SURVIVE and pursue these great improvements + better apps availability. MeeGo is a great OS. Hard to believe Nokia wants to dump it. PLEASE, pass it on to your Managers and Board of Directors!!!!

Your advice, about flashing, does not affect the phone warranty?

        • Anonymous

Not in the least, & esp. not for someone who’s in a country that the N9′s not officially supported.

The Nokia N9 has front facing camera and recently a Gtalk video call app has been released. The problem is, not everyone has their contacts on Gtalk. It is difficult to convince all your friends to make a new, different account just to interact with you. This would be hard on those who depend on video calls to keep in contact with their loved ones abroad. It would make life so much easier if Skype video call made it to the Nokia N9 (meego harmattan). This feature is already available on the predecessor, the N900. It should not be difficult to port it to meego. I guarantee that thousands of N9 users would gladly like to have this on their new piece of history.

    • Anonymous

You’re wasting your time. Elop’s cut the teams size hugely.
They don’t have the time/resources to implement this let alone many other features.
Even if they did I doubt they’d be allowed to, as Skype video’s reserved as a marquee feature for their Lumias, & “maybe” some Symbian handsets.
The main focus now, is on fixing the worst bugs…..

      • PunkyRevo

        Hi Jalyst…
i hope ur Ok? You answered me once abt the Nokia update…I wanted to ask you…Is there any possibility to get new themes on Nokia N9? im kinda bored…lol but its not a big issue…I wanted to know if there’ll be video talk on Skype??? it’d be so cool because ive got more contacts on Skype than Google…Please find out abt it and let me know…Thanks in advance…

        • jalyst

No idea about themes, have you tried HomeScreenSettings?
          I think he’s still actively developing it…
Then there’s that theme creation tool, I can’t recall the details.

I doubt we’ll ever get Skype, definitely not from Nokia, it’s MS’s bitch now.
The community may eventually work out how to hack Skype into Maemo6x.
          But that’s very unlikely….
It’s not hard to ask friends/family to to install google video-chat.
If they care about you they’ll make an effort to install & learn how to use it

          • PunkyRevo

            Hello jalyst,

thanks for the updates… i was really hoping for skype to have a video-call but its ok…it sucks but it will be fine…i’ve already got home screen settings…if you ever have new stuffs on your phone that i don’t have please let me know…:-)

            thanks a lot

When is pr 1.3 coming? It should have been available by the end of May.. they said

If delay means delivery of something more substantial than what’s been hinted, then I don’t mind waiting 5 more mths.
Hell, we know it’s probably going to be the last major release…
And they delivered all previous releases very quickly, too quickly in some ways.

how i can download Whats app

    • jalyst

Do some searching at talk[dot]maemo[dot]org for something called Wazapp.
You’ll find a thread about it, read the entire thread or as much as you can very carefully.

    whatsapp ???

    • jalyst

      Wazapp, Google it…

      • ip

been there done that…it is not working….and also it does not support media exchange, group chat and etc….how is this possible that this operating system is not supporting the best app ?

        • jalyst

Best app? Hardly… it’s the LAST sort of app I’d use, but that’s beside the point.
You obviously haven’t been following progress recently.
Try doing some research in the main thread & the main wiki, you’ll be surprised.
All the main features ARE supported, except for 1-2, the ones you list aren’t missing.
Plus it has some extras of it’s own, & a far better UI than most other platforms.
All this from an app that has to rely entirely on the community.

          • ip

Thank you for the info…but I work in phone company which means that for me all mobile phones are available and I been play with most of them…N9 is the best looking model that exist and I love him!! But whats app….free messaging system as well as media transfer and group chats and all those things that are free..I been to Barcelona MWC and yes whats app was voted to be best app in the world(google it). Anyhow i would love to use wazzap or what ever name is but I try to install that app for 7 days in a roll night and day…and no success…for now Im only looking and admiring my N9 while Im using Android…i would like to switch but all my contacts around the world will no longer exist and i would be confused( i did not use sms system for a looong tim) any advise or some specific date? And yes this is the only reason that I don t wear N9….

          • jalyst

Most popular maybe, but that’s a looong way from best app, that’s a “far more” subjective thing.
It literally take someone with more than a 5-min attention span to ensure they have a successful & working install of wazapp.
Give it another shot and you’ll surprise yourself…
Countless folks in the main thread have confirmed it’s working beautifully for them.
I will dig-up some more specific info if I have time, give me an email addy, links are a PIA here.
I really think you should make another effort yourself 1st though.

          • ip

Ok thank you, I will try again for sure. But could you please tell me what is the best app for you?

          • jalyst

            See my updated post above…
            I don’t have a “best app”, I have a suite that I like/enjoy, & whatsapp certainly isn’t one of them.
Whatsapp basically stole F/OSS sw & open protocols, & forked them into a closed/proprietary quagmire.

          • ip

but you love staff for free? specially messaging system with out limitations….i do..as well everybody else…i see here that you more likely have personally something against that app…but the fact is N9 is loosing that battle only because of one app…that is sad for such a good looking phone as this…I calculated ….so as much as im using now whats app …i would spend around 1000 euro weekly if I would use sms/mms…. so you tell me now what is better free or 1000 euro ?? don t be blind bro and don t take this personally ….Im fighting and visiting forums and singing petitions only in order to get that app on N9…only that app and Im becoming user of Nokia….but not now because most imported tool is missing……as for me yes this is personally because i love this N9 and I need reason to wear…i hope you understand me….and every whats app user will rather choose phone that contain whats app…..100 milion users with constant growth are proving difrent that you….

          • jalyst

    • jalyst

Post at talk[dot]maemo[dot]org, search 1st as all your answers are there…
But if you can’t find answers after a genuine attempt at searching, then start a thread.
There’s a few sub-forums you can post in, but the one called “MeeGo / Harmattan” is probably the most suitable.
I would post direct links, but spam filtering prevents me from doing that.

      Happy Research.
