Nokia N9 PR1.2 camera improvements in detail

Face recognition, continuous shutter and video editing are just some of the N9 enhancements

GLOBAL – When the Nokia N9 PR1.2 software update started rolling out last week, we saw a heap of improvements and features delivered to the Nokia N9. Part of the enhancements concentrated on the camera. Today, we’re taking a closer look at those,  with some help from Camera Program Manager at Nokia, Jens Wilke.

We asked Jens why so much time was spent on the N9 camera software?

“These improvements have been in the works for a while and the whole team is really passionate about the Nokia N9. We wanted people to have a great camera experience, and while there were many challenges, we overcame them and are confident people will enjoy these updates.”

After you’ve updated your Nokia N9 to PR1.2, head over to the application settings and look for the gallery. There you’ll see the option to switch on a breakthrough feature – yes, the Nokia N9 is the first smartphone with integrated automated face recognition.

Now, once you’ve take a photo of somebody, you’ll see a little question mark on the person’s face. When pressed, you can search through your contacts list to tag them. After a couple of times tagging the same person, your phone will suggest their name to you the next time they get papped by you. Double tap to confirm their name.

Face recognition suggestion

Not only does this help you find your favourite people quicker in your gallery, it also provides a seamless uploading experience when you post these photos on Facebook. Your friends will automatically be tagged, saving you time doing it later.

Facebook sharing with face tags enabled

When it comes to taking photos of non-static subjects, like people or animals, for example, it can be tricky to get that perfect shot – without ending up with a blurred image. That’s why Nokia enabled continuous shutter, so you’ll always get the shot.

Taking a series of three frames per second at 5.5-megapixels with zero shutter lag, your phone will capture every single moment in an instant. Holding down the capture key will take a total of nine images in three seconds, more than enough to flick through later.

Continuous shutter images in gallery

Sometimes, things can look great if you take a photo at a unique angle. But most of the time having everything lined up and in shot is the best way to capture a scene. That’s where the camera grid comes in handy.

Open the camera, line up the horizon up with the horizontal lines on your viewfinder and you know you’ve got the perfectly straight shot. Also, if you’ve got a building in the view, you can line up the edge of the building with a vertical line. Keeping everything square and straight.

Camera grid

Once you’ve taken all those perfectly straight, tagged, non-blurry photos, over time your gallery will start to fill up, which is why it now supports fast scrolling to allow you to jump to certain points in time, shown in months and years.

The improvements aren’t just reserved for photos, there’s something for video too. If you want to make any edits, like cutting out the end or the beginning of a film just trim them, from the phone itself. And why not add a tune to the video, for extra effect. This makes filming and editing much faster than before.

If all those camera improvements weren’t enough, then stay tuned. We’ve received word that FCam with HDR is coming and that the FCam library is already available on the Nokia N9. That means that if you’re a developer, you can start using that library to create new apps already. Plus, a Panorama app is coming very soon, via the Nokia Store. We’ll bring you an update hen we have it.

Have you enjoyed using the new Nokia N9 camera updates PR1.2 has brought? Let us know, below.

I waited on Nokia N9 for months to realize that its never going to launch in India. I wanted to be a Maemo user but, Nokia wanted me to look for something else I guess so here I am a Galaxy Note Owner now.

A panorama app coming our way? Nice!
One thing less that I miss from my N8. Now if just Shazam or Midomi would announce that they’re bringing their sound recognition app to the N9 and if there was a way to receive (and send) files via Skype, the N9 would be perfect for me in terms of software. ;)

HDR apps for Meego are not like symbian’s quality so I hope with Fcam drivers finally someone would able to make a good camera app with lots of features and I think video recording seems to be updated as well as now recorded videos play slightly smooth

‘HDRCam’ for N9 and its predecessor on the N900, ‘BlessN900′ and others (Frankencamera based) are much better than the offerings on any other mobile platform, including symbian. Also, FCam was mostly developed with the N900 as the platform.

Do what we did in the UK – buy one from a country that does have it. Today an N9 is also about £200 less than it was at launch too – bargain.

Thanks for the info on the camera update – I hadn’t found everything. I like the continuous capture and the grid is marvelous.

The fact that a panorama app is coming is great news – I loved the one on my N900.

    hmm hi guys.
personally N9 is a great phone and I love its UI as well as the hardware.  When it comes to the camera its something else and I must admit I’m quite disappointed :( been using my N82 for 3 years and can’t find the N9 match the N82 pictures when it comes to picture quality even in a sunny day with settings set to auto :( i’m getting a pinkish hue in the blue sky when compared to the N82 and the pics looks more pixelated too :( is there any software improvement that can be made ? furthermore I would be grateful if there’s a way to suppress this annoying shutter sound when taking pictures as I work in a control tower and its kind of embarrassing when taking pics with the shutter sound on :(

Turning the device profile to Silent, will also silence the camera. As an exception, some variants like the Chinese have a forced shutter sound.

But is it correct for this user to assert that the Android ph’s FF cam/app in this comparo is better?

[Search YouTube for a vid called: "Nokia N9 video call (Android to N9)"]

I’m skeptical that one can come to that conclusion based only on this comparo.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jens-Wilke/589243343 Jens Wilke

Firstly, I’m no expert in video call quality. After seeing the YT video and a first hand N9 HTC Android GTalk video call, I would say that front camera quality is not the bottle neck. After panning with the devices side by side (both using the main camera), It seems as if N9 has opted for faster framerate but lesser image detail. With limited bandwidth, this tradeoff between framerate and image detail I consider a matter of taste. Everybody can pick their favorite, but there seems to be no clearcut winner.

          • Anonymous

Ah, so you have an Android phone at hand to test!
I don’t right now (will soon) so I’ve no way to compare.
            Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!
Looking only at YT videos, my conclusion was similar to yours.

It’d be good if we can choose between frame-rate or IQ in subsequent updates.
As there’s to be no 3G or Skype video calling support. Hopefully the team can focus on ensuring this GTalk implementation’s more sophisticated than any Android handset for quite some time.

Yes, I’m enjoing it every day. :-)

Thanks for making the best produkt, you’re currently able to import to my country, even better. It’s simply great. And all the features are stunning compared what the Lumia series provides.

I hope we are able to buy a N9 like device with the outstanding PureView technology later this year or perhaps next year. Preferential with a lense cover to protect it agains fingerprints and dust. It would be outstanding and a great alternative to Android.

Hi, will you be able to have a native apps within contact for us to easily sync contact to gmail ? and also make available the option to list only contact with phone, like what Android did. Hope this can option will be available in future update of Belle. Thanks.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Hi there. If you synchronise with Gmail using Mail for Exchange, you can do exactly this.

  • http://twitter.com/DiscoverYellow Discoveryellow

Why camera app doesn’t support front
    facing camera now?

Also focus takes very long time in many
usage scenarios. It would also be great to make self portrait more doable, as
well as some sort of half shutter button press sulation for AE and AF locking.
Still ways to go with basic stuff.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jens-Wilke/589243343 Jens Wilke

Front camera is good for video calls, but in terms of quality it’s not on the same level as the main camera. Thus we purposefully left out the front camera support in the native camera application.

Self-timer is handy for self portraits. Self-timer was also introduced in the PR1.2 release. It has 2 and 10 sec option.

Keeping the shutter key pressed and getting lock (reticle turns
blue), locks AE (exposure) and AF (focus).

Hi thanks for the update it’s really nice to see that the development of the phone still continues and not is restricted to minor changes. The face recognition is really a boon as well as the continuous shutter. I hadn’t noticed the grid until now so i will give it a good try. Really it’s just like searching for Easter eggs with so many changes that i still find new one. Granted i didn’t read release notes. Anyway would it be possible to add to a new version the ability to use one of the buttons as a shutter button? There is a solution in the ovi store but it lags a bit. One last question though is it correct that the sharpness isn’t as good as it should be?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jens-Wilke/589243343 Jens Wilke

The use of volume keys was discussed with our interaction design. In the cameras, capture key is practically always on the right hand side. In our case, the volume keys are on the left hand side when device is held landscape mode. Design considered the left hand triggering awkward for the users, and didn’t want to go ahead with this option.

      • Anonymous

Thanks for the response. I can imagine that it wouldn’t feel good.I’m left handed and to me it feels quite ok. Even with the lag I’m still using it as i still can use the screen for the faster shots. Maybe rearranging the button layout to use the top right corner of the screen in landscape and middle right in landscape could improve it as well. Those two places are natural places to be used with the thumb. The current place is aesthetically ok but not ergonomic. For every shot I’m fidgeting to place my finger above the button losing attention for the shot itself.

        • Anonymous

          Interesting, I’m left-handed too, I can’t say I’ve noticed the same issue.
I guess it depends on how strongly left-hand biased you are…
I’m sometimes comfortable using my right hand for tasks that left-handed folk wouldn’t always be.

Fascinating! I discovered the new face tagging and rather like it. It would be nice if I could just tag a face with a name, though; I believe I’m forced to choose an entry from my contacts list, and it seems overkill to create a contact just to name people who I don’t know that well…

    • Anonymous

      Good point…..
Shame the public cant lodge enhancement requests in the tracker any more :(

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jens-Wilke/589243343 Jens Wilke

Correct, face tag needs to match a contact. Contact name is then written to the file itself using XMP metadata (according to metadata working group guidance). Generally people apply face tags to people they know, i.e. they’re already found in the contacts. There are exceptions, e.g. children. I needed to add 2 contacts for my kids in order to apply the tags. This you need to do only once.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jens-Wilke/589243343 Jens Wilke

If the person is not in the Contacts, you can “Add new contact” at the end of the contact picker list. Thus you can add the contact as part of the standard flow, without invoking “Conctacts” app separately.

Having a great camera on a phone is one of my pain stipulations. The iPhones camera is just about ‘good enough’ but still way behind what they could do.

    Hi,

the updates to the camera are great, but I seem to be having trouble with the face tagging. I can manually tag people in the photos fine, but the phone isn’t offering me suggestions of who to tag (as in the image above with Arno? as a suggestion). Some of my contacts have been tagged in almost 100 photos in my gallery (manually tagged that is), and the phone doesn’t seem to be learning who they are! Any solutions?

         Hi Jens,

yes, Face recognition is enabled in settings. I’m having to manually add the
face tags by selecting from the contacts list, rather than having the phone
automatically suggest tags. It’s still quicker than uploading and tagging to
Facebook, but it would be great if I could get in on the auto tagging fun as
        well!

Looking only at YT videos, my conclusion was similar to yours.
It'd be good if we can choose between frame-rate or IQ in subsequent updates.

As there's to be no 3G or Skype video calling support...

Hopefully the team will focus on making this GTalk implementation more sophisticated than any Android handset."]

I follow & read “heaps” of maemo/meego/nokia related forums, mail-lists etc.
Never have I seen anyone complain about such an issue* & I’ve never had it myself.
It’s either a hardware fault or a dogy flash, not a sw issue.
So no, I’d say they dont need to get their act together for this “issue”.

I’ve relayed your wish regarding the video call quality/frame-rate configuration to the video call folks. As there has been tendency to minimize the number of settings, I suspect that the chances of it happening are probably pretty slim … unless somebody would be able to produce a hack outside the official releases.

      @facebook-589243343:disqus

Thank-you for taking some time to help, it’s very much appreciated.

How long ago did you relay that?
N.B. I’ve been asking you about this for 2mth.

Would you be able to find out what the bug report no. is?
I want to look-it-up in the public bug-tracker & subscribe to it.
If it’s not in the public tracker, can you please ask them to clone it to the public one?

      Thanks again.

For now I’ve left Nokia, and have zero visibility on the proceedings. If this didn’t happen in PR1.3, it’s likely not to happen.

Thanks for at least responding, would’ve been more useful when you were still there, but, better late then never… I guess.

Also, see more recent comments from some users here, 1.3 apparently didn’t fix auto facial tagging for them.

The improvement for 1.2 is nice so for 1.3, I suggest that the gallery should be organized separating pics from cam, pics that are received & pics created by the music album. The sound should also be modified & increase it from the setting other than being tweak. The keypad display should have an optional key size.

      It’s a bug-fix release, feature-adds will be tiny compared to 1.2.
It’s also likely to be the last major update….
      There’ll be minor updates till 2015, but they’ll be perf/sec/stab/etc bug-fix updates.

  • anwarsillo

well… it seems that after this new PR 1.3 update that I downloaded and install… still not fix the problem of automatic facial tagging  … I hope that an upcoming update fix this issue because I love my N9…I am looking for a solution or help at TALK MAEMO..hope that…

In another thread here (or it may have been this one, search for yourself) one of the Nokia devs was looking into this issue.
It didn’t affect everyone, but some people were getting it IIRC.
He started troubleshooting it with one end-user, & eventually gave the guy his email addy.
This is his email address: jens[dot]wilke[at]nokia[dot]com
He may no longer work for Nokia, so he may not respond…
Lately Nokia’s been firing lots of people that don’t have anything to do with WP.
