Nokia Maps, Drive and Transport updated for Lumia

Nokia Lumia 800 in white

GLOBAL – If you are a Nokia Lumia user, some applications are exclusive to you. Among those, we’re proud to list Nokia Transport, Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive, which we recently updated with new features.

To get them, look no further than the Windows Phone Marketplace on your Nokia Lumia over the next few hours: you’ll be automatically notified when the updates are available for download.

We mentioned some of the new features included in these releases about two weeks ago but if you want to know more and discover what else is there, just keep reading.

Nokia Drive

You’re driving on an unknown road and you suddenly wonder whether you’re still respecting the speed limits. Or the road ahead is almost empty and you instinctively speed up a bit. Do any of these examples sound familiar? The new Nokia Drive can help you in those circumstances.

Nokia Drive navigation Nokia Drive Speed Limits settings

You can drive more safely because speed limits and relevant notifications are clearly visible in the app dashboard. Warnings are fully customizable with audio alerts and specific triggers.

Additionally, we introduced your most requested feature in this update: a complete offline experience. When you open Nokia Drive, under Settings > Manage maps you can download country maps for offline access. You can now rely on Nokia Drive in areas with poor network coverage or cut your data costs when you’re visiting foreign countries.

Nokia Maps

If you like to create a list of all the places you want to visit in a city, you’ll enjoy using the new feature of Nokia Maps that allows you to add places to favourites. And because you are most likely to share your new findings with friends, we made it easier to share place details and how to get there via SMS, email or social networks.

Nokia Maps Favourites Nokia Maps share a route

But this isn’t everything. On Nokia Maps you can also see the traffic situation in USA, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Belgium, Russia, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, UK, France, Spain, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden, India and UAE. Just use the live traffic view, which is available next to the map, satellite and public transport views.

By the way, when you plan a journey with trains and buses, you can now tap on each waypoint shown on the map to get immediately more information.

However, if you use public transport to commute or when visiting a foreign city, we suggest you to download the newest Nokia Transport app.

Nokia Transport

Available in more than 510 cities in 46 countries, Nokia Transport has received a lot of attention since we first introduced it at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Nokia Transport journey planner Nokia Transport Map integration

The app provides an overview of how to get, within city limits, from A to B using public transportation. Walk directions are displayed to help you get to the next stop and from the last stop to your destination. In 86 cities we also include timetable information.

You don’t need to download specific apps for each city you visit, you have everything in one place. Conveniently enough, you can also pin a favourite destination to start and always know how to get there from anywhere in the city.

Just download Nokia Transport for your Nokia Lumia from the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Note: if you participated to the beta phase of Nokia Transport we would like to thank you for your precious contribution, which is helping us shape the app for future releases. However, the app you now have on your Nokia Lumia (clearly marked as beta release) won’t get automatically updated to the version available on Marketplace. Please uninstall it before downloading Nokia Transport from Marketplace.

45km/h over Westminster Bridge? It must have been the dead of night!

Nice new shinies for us to play with – thanks L&C team!

Please explain why Madrid used to have basic subway coverage in the Nokia Transport beta and has ZERO coverage in the final version. Is this city not important at all?

Drive and Maps are awesome, though ;)

Hi @dondeloechan:disqus, this sounds quite odd. We do have coverage in Madrid, which is also one of my favourite cities ;-) I have tested yesterday a journey from Atocha Renfe to Chueca and it worked perfectly. Are you still having problems?

Sure am seeing some great apps posted by conversations, mynokiablog and wmpoweruser. Really like the mix of Nokia’s apps and Microsoft ‘s, especially their concept business apps. Would be great for gamers if there is the combo of Microsoft xbox glasses and the new Nokia 900.

I don’t seem to get it from my marketplace (India). Had been using the beta and would really love to have the released version available.

    • Rahul Sinha

@ Ganesh / Mike, Try the alternate way >> Open Marketplace >> Click Apps from Nokia >> Select any one app (Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive etc) >> You would see something as “More from Nokia Corporation” in the description, just below the version info >> Clicking on the text would take you to a New List where you would find “Nokia Transport” in the end of list..

Hope it helps. Let us know how it works for you….

This worked for me. The update wasn’t showing for me but when I opened the app info in marketplace, I had the option to update my Nokia Maps. Real offline Maps is a must-have for me.

Don’t worry, it’s the exact same app, just has a different name depending on where you are in the world. It’s called Nokia Transit in the US, for example.

Absolutely love the update to Nokia Drive, it really is now pretty feature complete (for me and what I use it for).

I was always going to get the Lumia 800 after seeing it announced, but when they also announced Nokia Drive for it, that sealed the deal which is why I had it pre-order for it’s launch day back in November (UK). Just glad Nokia didn’t take a “well it gets people from A to B so let’s just leave it alone” approach and instead have continued to make improvements and feature additions.

Where can I find the list of cities Nokia Transport is available?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

We are working on a way to publish the list in a smart way. You have to consider, in fact, that this list is expanding very quickly. We had a list for the beta phase on Nokia Beta Labs, but in two weeks we have been able to add more than 200 cities to our coverage, making that list already obsolete ;-)

  • http://twitter.com/toninikkanen Toni Nikkanen

I like the update to Nokia Drive, and the official release of Nokia Transport. Works fine in Berlin, as was expected :) However the continuing lack of offline support and compass in Nokia Maps is a disappointment, I would liked to see those added first before the new features that were released now.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-81125086:disqus, we have designed Nokia Maps for a urban case when you need to find the best, most up to date and coolest places of the city. For this you would need to be online anyway. But thanks for your feedback!

      • http://twitter.com/toninikkanen Toni Nikkanen

Well the offline data is there, why not use it? I never enable data connection when abroad, which is when I need the maps most.
As for compass.. it makes it a really bad experience, when I’m getting out of a U-bahn station and don’t know which direction I’m walking or facing until I’ve moved a hundred meters or so, to let the GPS warm up and pick up my direction accurately enough. Almost makes me throw the phone sometimes..

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-81125086:disqus, we are working on all these features: they are part of our Symbian based products and of our expertise.
As you can see, we are updating Nokia Maps for Nokia Lumia on a regular basis, so please expect an even better and more advanced experience in the next releases.

Great stuff. I’ve been using Drive since I got my Lumia 800 back in December, and the clear display and speed of routing has relegated my old TomTom ONE to the car’s door pocket. I do have a few items on the wishlist, though:

    * Tap/hold on the map to choose a destination
    * Organise/rename previous destinations
    * Use the live traffic data from Maps
    * Option “No-map” display, with just the next turn/ETA/current speed/etc shown in big text
    * Option to reduce the map size to show more info, such as ETA, distance and arrival time simultaneously

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1397012500 Peter Whysall

        Another one:
Be able to route to a contact’s address. That would be *super* cool.

    • http://www.facebook.com/lars.in.the.snow Lars Lindstrøm

      >>> Tap/hold on the map to choose a destination
Would be super nice. It’s offen that I don’t know the adress of my destination, but locate it via the map. This feature already exist on many other navigation devices, but unfortunately lack on the Lumia… :-(

Good Job with drive 2.0 but have some issues with New Maps and Transit/Transport app
    1. Maps still has no Compass support or downloadable Maps, it should really share maps with Drive like on symbian
    2. Transit does not yet work in Mumbai

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @C7User:disqus, we will consider your suggestion about compass. Please consider that we are constantly upgrading Nokia Maps with new features.
Can you also try again using Nokia Transport in Mumbai? We are actually using data from BEST and Mumbai Suburban Railway.

Great also do not miss the offline maps for Nokia Maps, strange that Drive application supports this but Maps does not.

The app did not work in Goregaon which is suburb of Mumbai so maybe whole suburban area is not covered yet will try the application in more locations to see who it works

Thanks @C7User:disqus for providing a more detailed feedback about Nokia Transport in Mumbai and do let us know whether you still encounter problems.

Both Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive for Nokia Lumia have been developed in a record time. Nokia Maps has been designed for a more urban use case when you would probably be online anyway (e.g. to find the latest, coolest restaurant), which is why we started implementing offline maps with Nokia Drive first.

          • Anonymous

Yes you are very correct that windows phone world is still a new world for Nokia and both maps and drive are complex pieces of software the teams are doing great job and I wish them well and same time we will keep demanding features to make it even better :)

I was also puzzled why it didn’t show up in the marketplace, but the workaround found it. Thanks.

I find it a bit odd to have the same app in a gazillion different names, since marketing something that doesn’t have a common name is probably a bit tricky, even though it makes sense to localize. Weird, huh? :D

I went crazy trying to search the app, and I was stupid not to realize it’s name wasn’t in english, but my own language.

Yes, it has basic subway coverage for Madrid (I believe that bus coverage is lacking though) the problem I find is that many times it shows you the correct routes from, for example, street A to street B, but fails to find the route form C to B even if C is only a few hundred meters from A.

For example it works from “Avenida de America” to “Gran Via”, but fails from “Francisco Remiro” to “Gran Via” even though “Francisco Remiro” is only about 200m from “Avenida de America” and the two routes should be nearly identical.

On the other hand, I love Nokia Maps. The new points of interest are very good even for small towns.

The two updates work really well. Nokia Map offline mode reminds me of the Nokia Maps on Symbian devices.
It seems that Nokia Transit in Sydney does not work so well. I couldn’t get routes.

The two updates work really well. Nokia Map offline mode reminds me of the Nokia Maps on Symbian devices.
It seems that Nokia Transit in Sydney does not work so well. I couldn’t get routes.

This looks awesome! I notice the Maps app for N9 was updated recently to include many of the features you talked about, but (unfortunately) there doesn’t seem to be a Meego/N9 version of Nokia Transport available. I don’t suppose it’s in the pipeline, is it?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @JoshLBS:disqus, indeed you can plan a public transport route on your Nokia N9 using Nokia Maps.

      With Windows Phone
as our new main smartphone platform, however, it is clear that moving forward
our focus for our mobile maps application will also switch to Windows Phone.

So no support for the Nokia N9?

At the moment we don’t have a similar application for Nokia N9, I’m afraid.

It would also make sense to have a possibility to choose between metric and imperial measurements even if one gets the public transport application from the UK marketplace. It is quite annoying to be stuck with miles which I have no idea about.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Yes, this makes sense, @teemulehtinen:disqus. Which is why we have similar options in e.g. Nokia Drive.
We will definitively look into it, in the meantime I hope you can get a feeling of how far stops are from the estimated time you need to get there.

I really miss basic integration of Nokia Maps with Nokia Drive. A simple ability to select a destination in Maps and then select “drive to destination with Nokia Drive” which would then launch Nokia Drive with the selected destination, would be nice.

Please tell me that there is a chance in a future update that Nokia Drive (Lumia 900) will include spoken street names as Symbian and Meego currently have?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Can the Lumia 900 navigate completely offline on both Drive and Transport now, with the updates?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-669243428:disqus, Nokia Drive supports a completely offline experience, but you have to be online to use Nokia Transport.

  • http://twitter.com/mlweiland Michael Weiland

I’m trying Nokia Drive on a new Lumia 900, with the hope that it can replace the need for a PND. Did a recent drive across Chicago with Nokia Drive and a Garmin (1490T) side-by-side, and have a couple of questions.

    1) Is it possible to display what the whole route will be? I see the “next” maneuver but couldn’t find a way to display the whole route.

    2) Couldn’t help but notice that speed limit signs display as the round red circles as used in much of the world but not in the United States. (We use black-and-white rectangles.) There are some good localization elements (e.g., Interstate routes use the appropriate “shields”), but this appears to have been missed.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Thank you @twitter-19806282:disqus for your detailed feedback. You have a good point about the localization, we will look into it.
If you want to see the route overview just tap on the map anytime during the journey. You will be also able to zoom in/out, pan the maps and so on.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-134208528:disqus, we are gradually expanding our coverage on our mobile apps and on maps.nokia.com
In Sweden we can currently calculate public transport routes in Stockholm and Göteborg. However, these routes are limited to train/t-bana journeys and they do not include timetable information yet.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

It’s odd that only LTE was shown on your device.
But don’t worry, Nokia Drive is designed to allow you to download maps only if WiFi connection is available and active.

      • Anonymous

My Wifi was active, but after downloading an entire US map I found that I have exceeded my Data Usage which was impossible. I looked into the data stats and it showed that nokia drive used my data connection to download them and not wifi, even though my wifi was fully active. Is my unit defective or something?

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Odd behavior… I am also not able to understand from here what happened exactly. Let me investigate internally whether we can reproduce it. As a quick fix, next time you are downloading maps, temporarily deactivate GMS data connection.

I really like the Nokia Drive experience except for one thing. When I lose the GPS signal, the display jumps all over the place, as if the app can’t decide where you are. Drive needs a dead reckoning capbility that continues along the specified road and the current speed while the GPS signal is being re-acquired.

    Hi Pino,
It would be great if following options are considerd.
    1. Set a starting location by user choice and show the path from there to the destination using Nokia Drive. As of Nokia drive has to determine the present location everytime i want to go to a destination
2.Ability to lock the phone buttons (soft lock) when in drive mode so accidently you dont press buttons causing the drive screen to transited to menu screens
3.PND’s provide ‘Points of interest’ (eg tourist spots around your location) which is the big reason they sell more include these in all maps if possible
    4. Provide Offline download and sync for Maps, ie i want to download maps in my PC and sync it by connecting the Nokia Phone using a tool this way i can offline download the latest maps/apps.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @google-10848074ce696314e38f909e76c3c46d:disqus, quite a long list of suggestions ;-) Let me go through all of them…
      1. We have found out that more people use Nokia Drive to plan a route ‘from here to there’. Why would you use Nokia Drive to plan a route from somewhere else?
      2. I will let the team know about this one, it seems a fair feedback to me.
      3. Points of interests are included in Nokia Drive too. Just type in the search box the name of what you are looking for.
      4. We support offline maps, however not in the way you are describing. Instead of having to connect your Nokia Lumia to a computer, you can download maps directly on your smartphone.

      • ravi k

Hi Pino Thanks for the detailed response,

for the #1 suggestion, that would help plan my drive from where i want to rather than my present location. you may still ask why? Answer is many times end user knows the route to a particular point, from which you dont know the route to the destination. I can save battery and unwanted navigation assistance till the required starting point.

For #3. Points of interests should be one single option, so i select that option and all points of interest around my existing location should be displayed(based on category etc..), I feel it wouldn’t be intiuative to type and find out.

For #4,  map downloads range to even 100mb in that case having phone on wifi is rather unwanted, I could put all required downloads on my pc (tool) and sync it dont you feel that will be better approach (you could provide this aswell to other apps).

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

          Hi @google-10848074ce696314e38f909e76c3c46d:disqus, here my answers:
          1. Good one, thanks for explaining. We will look into it and let you know. Please consider that we can’t include all suggestions. Some of them even contradict themselves ;-) But we are trying to offer an experience that makes sense for the most.
          3. Got it, I will report back to the team.
          4. I don’t see this happening in the near future. It would require maintaining also a pc software, while we are focusing on the pure mobile experience.

  • NaviSingapore

I have been a long time user of Navigation on Nokia phone and have seen  the improvements that have gone on.  A couple of points on the current version of Nokia Drive:
    1. Very frustrating that I cant save favourite locations on Nokia Drive – Currently my home address leads to the road behind my house from which I cannot access my house – if favourites locations were saved – all i would need to do was same my actual location as a favourite
    2. Favourites on Nokia Maps dont show up on Nokia Drive!!
    3. Cannot transfer favourites saved online on previous Symbian versions of Nokia Maps! I have lots of restaurants etc from my travels saved up and I cannot get these favourite locations on my phone.

A few tweaks will help make a good product really great.  Navigation is the primary reason I got the Lumia as a spare phone for when I travel.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @NaviSingapore:disqus, fair feedback. Indeed, we are already working on all these features. Just stay tuned and you will be among the first to know when those are being released.

  • dalydose

I am so thankful that Nokia is picking up the slack in this area.  I love having real navigatoin on my Lumia 900.  Moving forward, I’d love to see the following improvements:

    1.  Integrate with the OS more so we can send addresses from searches and contacts directly into Drive.

    2.  How about a US English female voice.  I don’t like dudes telling me what to do! Ha ha.  The British female is OK, but it throws me everything she says “motorway”.

    3.  Please get it to speak the street names.  It gets very confusing here in Los Angeles and I have to kind of look at the phone more than the road in conjested areas.

    4.  PLEASE have “Saved Locations” so we save places like Home, Work, Gym, etc.

    5.  Update the colors or at least let us choose alternatives.  The creme, white, grey and black is a little hard to follow on glances.

    6.  I’d like to be able to adjust the volume of the voice navigation separate from the system (music) volume.  The voice nav voice gets drowned out by the music and I’d like to adjust.

    7.  Voice entry??  Hmmm. Maybe??  :)

Please note that the existence of my wish list does not dimish my joy in having this app available!!

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @dalydose:disqus, I might have answered these same questions on another blog post, but here again my answers:
      1. We are working on it
      2. As soon as we find a nice US female voice, we will include it in Nokia Drive
      3. This is also a feature we had on Symbian and we are more than willing to port over to Windows Phone
      4. You can save locations as favorites or pin them to start with Nokia Maps and Nokia Transport, soon it will also be available for Nokia Drive
      5. We will consider this suggestion
      6. Interesting one… we will consider it too
      7. We started testing voice search on Symbian months ago so we are definitively looking into this too

    Hi Pino,

    1. When Nokia Drive decides the route, it should allow the end user to alter the path taken, reason many times it detects a very long route when the end user may know a shorter route. Best would be Provie an option like go through required street by choosing on the map along with the option of using what Nokia drive found. This reduces route recalculations if the end user takes the path(initial few miles/to a point) he wants to use for that drive.

2.I feel the battery usage was more while at navigation, i am not sure if this can be optimized by better logic.

Already many ppl have requested favourite locations, this is a very important feature for next update required pls.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

And more answers here ;-) I like your engagement, @google-10848074ce696314e38f909e76c3c46d:disqus!
      1. This is something we are going to introduce in the next release of Nokia Drive with MyCommute.
      2. Please use an in-car charger and in-car holder: it’s the best way to experience Nokia Drive.

Can you look to integrate Nokia Maps and Drive? Because I do most of my place search in Nokia Maps as it give me the phone number, open/close hours, reviews, photos etc., but if I want to navigate to that place I have to type in the address into Nokia Drive that the map shows. Simple comparison is the phone number, I can directly call the number that the maps show me, but i can only see list of directions to navigate and not the Nokia Drive. In this way you can simply eliminate the application Drive and just use maps for everything. I love Nokia Maps by the way :).

Second is that the Nokia Drive does not talk out the exits or streets to take which makes it impossible to use it without watching the phone screen.

  • ravi k

    Hi
Please provide option in Nokia Drive for Voice commands which can pause/resume as user requests. The app should still keep tracking in the background the present position so when the user requests Resume it fires back and resumes with present location instantly.

    Above option helps.
#Long drives where you may not need guidence all through, you can call out ‘Pause’ for eg. And call out ‘Resume’ as and when needed.
#Reduces distraction to driver can be considerd as great safety option.
    #Can save battery
#Can be extended in future to voice control the complete app with all options.

    Color coding:
As of now the only color coding you see in Nokia drive is the path on which you are driving is color coded (default blue). Please consider providing more details with color coding.

1.Alternate routes should be color coded (specific color)
(If Alternate route is used by the end user, the above info can be feed into app so no need to re-calculate the route again).

2.Color border based on Tranffic status (Green/Red/Purple) for (Normal/Bad/Moderate)

3.Hospitals/Resturants/Gas stations etc with color coding (as of now a small icon sort of pic is shown for these)

In a nutshell use the ability of the colors supported by the phone.

    Thanks,
    Ravikk

I have however some observations you might find interesting.

We are already thinking about ways to optimally use your smartphone in your car. You can read more here: http://conversations.nokia.com/2011/09/13/putting-nokia-in-the-driving-seat-with-nokia-car-mode/

While you are waiting for a potential pause/resume feature in Nokia Drive, do you know that you can use Nokia Drive in ‘assistance mode’ without any turn-by-turn navigation? Just start driving without entering a destination.

The color coding for traffic is something we are already going to implement in the next version of Nokia Drive.

  • BadtzBee

Is Nokia going to update Drive and Maps on WP7 to have the same features as Drive & Maps on Symbian? I’m feally a little ( ok, mightily) annoyed about the watered down version supplied to Windows Phone. Really! If I could get a refund on my Lumia I wouldn’t think twice about taking it.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @BadtzBee:disqus, actually the whole point of this blog post was to inform about our commitment to continuously update our location based apps on Nokia Lumia.
I feel your disappointment when comparing the feature set on Symbian but may I ask which features you are missing so badly?

    1. I would like the feature to select between different routes from A to B. Not sure what route my Lumia 800 picks now when it differs from my Garmin så I can’t compare. The Nokia Drives always predict that the tripwill take longer time than it takes.

Maybe select between shortest route or quickest route.

    2. And I would like that You turn on the speed camera feature in Sweden.

    3. An import feature to allow me to import my favorite places (POI) and maybe an alert when a closes in on them.

Anyway I like the Nokia Drive very much, thanks!

      1. We have a similar feature on Nokia Drive for Symbian that we will most probably port over to Windows Phone. Stay tuned!
      2. We work closely with different local authorities to provide this features in several countries. Please consider that sometimes, because of local regulations, this is not possible.
      3. This is one of the most requested features. We are working on it.

I was extremely happy with the features with my N8. My lumia 800 lacks the ones I use the most. The GPS has no preferences to choose or avoid Toll roads, Motorways, Shortest/Fastest route etc. Will these options be enabled in the coming updated, if yes. when.

Nokia Drive is in desperate need of more detailed voice navigation. When I’m on the highway, half the time it says “take the exit” and I have no idea which one it is referring to because of clustered roads. It should say “Take Exit 34″ or anything really that improves the context to its directions.
