Nokia 808 PureView and Nokia Rich Recording brings true stereo sound

Published by Adam Fraser on March 23, 2012

GLOBAL – The Nokia 808 PureView has a truly mind-blowing camera. If you don’t know that by now, where have you been hiding? Not only does it use a 41-megapixel camera to capture what’s called a pure pixel, it also uses something called Rich Recording to capture pure sound. We think that the result is the richest sound you’re likely to have heard from a mobile phone.

Before we go into some of the details, we’d suggest you press the play button on the video above.

Done that?

Hearing is believing, as the video above demonstrates. It shows the Nokia 808 PureView pitched against two other competitor devices to record the sounds of a singing group, a car engine and a rock band playing a track.

 Recording

What you’ll notice is that the recordings from the Nokia 808 PureView are considerably better than the other devices.

What makes Nokia Rich Recording different to any other current high-end smartphone is the ability to record sound without distortion at around 140-145db. Most current smartphones record up to 110db. The Nokia 808 PureView records at volumes four times louder than conventional microphones.

The lower bass sounds are also captured without distortion and by combining the upper and lower range together you’re left with the full range of sounds. The result is almost CD-like quality.

Nokia 808 PureView

Given that the Nokia 808 PureView is capable of capturing some amazing HD footage with the video camera, the addition of true stereo sound makes the phone a great movie-making device.

The Nokia 808 PureView will be the first phone to feature Nokia Rich Recording technology, however we’ll be seeing it introduced to the rest of the smart devices portfolio in the future.

Are you looking forward to experiencing Nokia Rich Recording for yourself? Let us know, below.

      Quarter Two.

Ian, no offence, but quarter 2 means 3 months or 90 days, which isnt a very short time when someone’s waiting for such a great device, u know personally ive the cash in my wallet and if 808 would be in the stores tommorow, ill get it tommorow, i jst hope, that atleast the launch dates dont get delayed more, since i have a fear of it, because Damian Dinning stated that there is still work left on the low light optimizations of the camera, plus they didnt had the final h/w yet… what would u say about this???

        • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

I’m sorry but the only answer I can give is Q2. Remember that product development can extend beyond launch, though – the N8 got camera improvements this year.

right, they stated the launch somewhere in may… i’m still being patient since i know the device performance will be worth the wait… noone wants a buggy device that costs quite some money… so im fine with the waiting, but you know waiting has never been an easy task mate…

anyways thankyou for the information Ian… much appreciated :)

Hey. This is an awesome technology! But I have a question. Does the N9 already has some version of Rich Recording? Because I have been filming my band’s rehearsal and we were simply amazed by the quality that it gives. It gave a stereo picture without ANY distortions (and we play rock with loud guitars and stuff :D ), where not only other phones have failed, but also my old Canon PowerShot S2 IS has failed. Until that moment it was the best recording devise we had :D

And if the N9 doesn’t have the Rich Recording built in already, are you planning on making it available later?

    Thanks.

What I look forward to is using the Rich Recording tech, mixed with Xbox and Kinect, playing with a projected Xbox band and you, maybe a drummer, scanning your drums and yourself, playing and recording with the band using Rich Recording. This would be you and your instrument put into the track. Great education tool.

Why bother releasing this phone with the already-defunct Symbian OS?  We have to wait this long already – you may as well wait until you can get it out with Windows Phone OS (7.5? 8?).  I really want one of these, but I will not be buying one until it is available with a contemporary OS. Just doesn’t make sense.

    • Emme

Nokia Belle works just as well as any ather OS if you  are most interested in talking, photographing, navigating, listening to music, recording videos. Whats not working ia the zillions of apps.

    • http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hradayesh Nimavat

then you will have to wait for long time…..Microsoft would probably allow nokia to use customize windows phone after Apollo update which will be released in 2013 so this year will be all about Nokia releasing phones running wp os with Microsoft’s fixed hardware and software configuration….no pure view with wp this year

What´s the point to release these at all once they will not come to be available ?

    • Anonymous

Im buying mine ASAP. It will never leave the tripod and will replace the desire I had of buying an expensive camera. The Rich Recording is a huge plus and lends itself to a whole new experience. Also, Ovi does have some nice apps for such a device for film and musician use.

I cannot wait for this phone.  My N8 seems less cool and capable the more I hear about the 808, I know it’s illogical but that’s how it is.

actually its logical lol, ive got my third N8(no bugs or issues, i jst keep changing my devices, and im back to symbian from android, as symbian has everything i need with good battery and smooth performance after belle.and i broke my first n8, got in bronze for a change this time)

anyways, coming back to the point, as i said, it is logical, i feel the same, since 12 and 41mp is three times the difference plus the new technologies like pureview and rich recording just make the camera and video experience more pure and more rich, just cant wait for the device to hit the shelves, im going to get it in black, whats your color, i like white too, but then again it gets dirty in my hands too soon…

      • http://www.facebook.com/tamas.tokos Tamás Tokos

Black is the best but the red one…I think it is very unique and I will think about it! ;)

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=624855599 Sibt Ul Hasnain Ashmal

i like the red one too, but in my country if i walk around with the red one, ppl will be looking and laughing at me, the public here dont have a thing called “decency”…

and red would launch later, since all three colors dont release at a time, its the same with any phone… first only the black color releases, then the white and others, same happened with n8… first it was gray, then bronze and pink and orange blue green came later after 2 3 months…

Sounds good :-). Audio recording is one of the weakest points in my current smartphone (N97 mini). What is the audio bit rate the phone can use for video recording?
Too bad it comes in Q2, cannot get it for my summer holiday snaps and videos :-(

Yes of course… I have a N8 right now, and its recorded stereo sound is also one of the best I ever heard recorded on a phone.
Any chatter/ talking, is easily picked up clearly the twin mic’s.

If 808 betters even that, then I would want to know about it… How about a sample…?
