Good romance: Nokia fans are goo-goo for Gaga

Published by Ian Delaney on March 28, 2012

Happy birthday miss

GLOBAL – On her 26th birthday today, Lady Gaga can also celebrate that she’s the all-time #1 most-downloaded female artist from the Nokia Music store in the UK, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, Russia and Malaysia. And she ranks in the top five female artists in a further eight countries across the globe.

In 2011, the Lady Gaga track ‘Born This Way’ (from the album of the same name) was the only track to appear in every single Nokia Music Store’s overall top 10 tracks for the year.

Last year, she also had the Nokia Music Store’s overall top album in Europe and a number of other markets with ‘Born This Way.’ However, for overall album downloads she was in fact topped by another female artist: Rihanna, who effectively had two top albums in the Nokia Music Store charts for most of the year.

Rihanna - top album artist

The popularity of solo female artists is clear: they represent five of the top ten most downloaded artists in Europe (the other five being four male soloists and the Black Eyed Peas.)

Mix RadioIn recognition of this rising popularity, and to celebrate Lady Gaga’s birthday, the Nokia Music team worked with her to create a Mix Radio channel featuring her favourite songs and inspirational artists in a mix that is available completely free for Lumia smartphone owners.

Some of the world’s biggest female artists have helped us create other exclusive playlists, including Rihanna, Lana Del Rey and Florence Welch – find them in the Celebrity Mixes section in Mix Radio on your Lumia.

Who is your favourite female artist? What tracks by female soloists would you like to see in a “Nokia Fans’ Top Female Artists” playlist on your Lumia smartphone? Go to Nokia’s global Facebook page now and let our music team know so they can get your favourites into the mix!

This is a great idea. I don’t know anyone else who offers this. Fans won’t want to skip a single track. I like all the artists you mention. But I’d like to see some indie bands do it too, mixing intracks that have influenced them as well as their own stuff.
