Software update brings battery boost for Nokia Lumia 800

white Lumia

GLOBAL – Since launching the Nokia Lumia 800 late last year, we’ve been focused on delivering continuous enhancements to the phone through software updates. Today, we’re happy to announce the third software update in only four months.

This software version for the Lumia 800 (1600.2487.8107.12070) brings significant improvements in battery performance and power management. Originally scheduled for 18 April, we’ve now managed to bring the schedule forward.

But before you get all excited and reach out for that cable to connect your Lumia 800 to your Mac or PC, there’s just one more thing to know: the update will not span the globe all at once. It will be queued up over 4 weeks, beginning today (28 March) for the first batch. Subsequent phased updates will be on 4, 11 and 18 April. Click here to see if the update is available for your country or your operator.

Why updates are like herding sheep

If you don’t see your country or operator listed in the first batch, or even the second one, you may feel like you’ve been passed over, but there is a reason for this. Firstly, every software update for Windows Phone has to go through Zune (or its alter ego, Windows Phone 7 Connector, on the Mac).

The real-life analogy that I can think about to describe this is herding sheep through a gate. For a Windows Phone partner, developing a smartphone is like that: there’s always a balance to be struck between what you can do and what you’d like to do, between what you can offer now and later. But due to the urgent need to get this update in the hands of people, we were able to bring the schedule forward, although not all at the same time.

And since the new software needs to go through the mandatory testing and approval from each and every operator, the variant for your network will be slotted into a batch as soon as it’s ready.

A trio of Lumia 800s

Now that we’ve established the software update schedule and the reasons for the phased rollout, let’s get into the juicier stuff – what the software update brings you.

We’ve heard your feedback and comments: better battery performance is what you really want. And that’s exactly what you’ll get. We put the software through rigorous tests, and what came out was an update that shows significant improvements in battery life, whether it’s for talk time in 3G networks, browsing over WiFi, music playback, or simply, the overall usage time. Our internal testing also showed that for smartphones with similar battery capacities (the Lumia 800 sports a 1450mAh battery), the Lumia 800 was now among the top performers in battery life for the key measures that we concentrated on.

Full power ahead

Since I updated my phone, my personal experience – on average these last two weeks – has been between 25 to 30 hours of battery life with my daily usage pattern: numerous phone calls and text messages, browsing, push email on three mail accounts, some music to and from work, some GPS (Drive and Maps) – and with the phone in flight mode for about 5 hours when I sleep. I must admit, though, I can’t claim to be a power user in any area, but I’m no lightweight either.

Along with battery, we’ve brought enhancements to the bass in the audio so that you get better voice quality and even more enjoyment out of Nokia Music. We’ve also ensured that the soft keys illuminate at all brightness levels settings.

I know some of you are keen to know when features like WiFi tethering will be available.  We can’t confirm at this stage exactly when it will be delivered, but rest assured it is on its way.  I hope you will agree that we’ve prioritized those enhancements that will give everyone the most enjoyment out of their Lumia 800.

In case it’s your first time, here’s a video explaining the update process:

In the meantime, we hope you’ll enjoy the new software update, and as always, we’d be happy to know what you think.

Battery update sure does assist battery life. Had it for over a week now and battery is soo much better. I keep thinking it’s wrong when it says “time last charged 18 hours ago” and it’s still 40% left, and i’ve been using it all day.

Hope to get some great battery life from Lumia 900 too.

Great information, keep up the good work! But you have to sleep more, five hours is a nap :).

I’m not sure if many people have paid a keen eye to the existing bugs in the latest update (1600.2487.8107.12070) the battery fix may be all fine and dandy, happily chugging along with 21 hours and more with excessive usage. how ever, on the other hand it has ruined the camera. The white balance is totally off, while panning from different areas with different room lighting the colours go all haywire giving you washed out picture, there’s an excessive amount of flicker while taking in-door pictures and as for taking pictures in the night, it blows out all the colours leaving it with a greenish/yellowish glow tint.. literally It’s annoying as hell. I’m currently using my second Lumia 800, I got rid of the first one thinking that the phone was defective with the camera issue on the latest firmware (12070) and also not forgetting to mention I had terrible battery life on the previous firmware (11500) but the camera was fantastic on it. I got rid of my first Lumia 800 and got my self another one, back on (11500) firmware.. the pictures were superb, in-door, out-door and night photography and my battery was perfect on the (11500) firmware. For the right reason I was reluctant to update my second Lumia to the new firmware (12070) but decided to go ahead with it since I was under the impression that my first Lumia 800 was faulty and then right after I got done with updating the phone I was stuck in the same predicament as I was in with the first Lumia, an extremely horrible camera, though the battery seems to be perfectly fine.

Now I’m in a fix and avoid taking pictures cause of this bug, I’m growing frustrated with this phone and waiting impatiently for a resolve with the next update which is due when the Lumia 900 is launched where Nokia has stated that there will be many features including the panoramic view and the colour balance fix for the camera.

Nokia seriously needs to have this stuff sorted out ASAP, the Lumia 800 is currently still the flagship phone until they release the Lumia 900 and with the issues half of the world has faced with the Lumia 800, it’s definitely going to take Nokia down hill considering that this is their first attempt to introducing Windows Phone 7.

Like it’s said ‘The first impression is the last impression’.

To simplify it, (1600.2487.8107.12070) has a MAJOR camera bug!

How exactly a bug with the camera?

    • http://www.johanpaul.com/blog/ Johan Paul

I don’t see a major problem with the camera with the 12070 FW. In fact, I don’t see any problem with the camera compared to earlier FW..

      • http://twitter.com/ally_pereira Ally Pereira

You’ll have to try it indoors, try panning around with in-door lighting, florescent and incandescent lights. you’ll see the flicker and you’ll see the colours change.

        • http://www.johanpaul.com/blog/ Johan Paul

AFAIK the flickering happens also on 10500 FW (I hope it would have been fixed, but haven’t really tested it yet). And for me as soon as I focus on something indoors, the white balance is corrected and the colors are ok. But maybe you need to put manually some white balance setting as even with high-end DSLRs they can’t always get the white balance correct.

But I definitely can’t see a MAJOR issue with the camera.

          • http://twitter.com/ally_pereira Ally Pereira

That’s the thing, the 11500 managed to pick the colours correctly in auto mode without tampering with any settings (except for setting the focus to normal) while the 12070 also set to auto went totally wrong. Check out the images I’ve posted above.. adding a few more.

Yet and still, the T-Mobile US 710 still has not been updated to fix security and disappearing keyboard bugs.

Is this lack of US firmware updates the type of support that US customers can expect from Nokia’s entrance to the US?

Why should I consider or recommend the 900 if the 710 has been given timely updates or even a hint of info regarding updates.

I have a hard time looking past the fact that the Global 710 has been updated several times yet the branded 710 has not. Nokia should work VERY closely with US carriers to ensure the updates are a priority to quickly establish a respectable name and build trust with the new generation of Nokia buyers and the age of “how come my phone isn’t updated!!!!Nokia took my money and ran!!!!”

Does anyone at Nokia have an update or insight on US based updates?

    • http://about.me/prjkthack prjkthack

You’re talking about a different software update. Nokia primarily works on the firmware for their devices, with little involvement on operating system bugs and issues. Microsoft is the one who is primarily responsible for operating software updates like security issues and disappearing keyboards. Hopefully you’ll see T-Mobile push the update to your phone if T-Mobile even decides to do it, as that is always a major issue. If you want the update to your phone’s operating system, you need to appeal to Microsoft and T-Mobile, not so much Nokia.

      • Anonymous

What I am saying is, without communication from Nokia and or T-Mobile, the perception is that Nokia/T-Mobile doesn’t care. MS has don’e their part, Nokia has done their part on unlocked devices AND carriers in other regions AND they have announced updates and details pertaining to locations/carriers.

Microsoft has already updated WP 7.5 to fix the aformentioned bugs and Nokia has already updated the unlocked and other country/carrier variants as evident by Navifirm and Jan., Feb. announcements but the US is left out of the picture.

I haven’t heard a word from Nokia about the US 710 though, haven’t seen the appearance of the firmware and haven’t heard a peep from T-Mobile either?

It was my understanding that after Nokia gets the core WP update from MS, they create the Lumia specific unlocked firmware and then they work with the carriers to have carrier
specific needs added to the firmware and/or testing.
Is that correct? If so, my question is: Is anyone here or anyone from Nokia able to confirm that they have heard, seen, used or created an update for the US 710 AND what should we expect going forward with the 900?

I have bought my Nokia devices unlocked since the days of the N82 and I am accustomed to getting the firmwares as Nokia releases them. I am looking for information as to what is the US expectation because as of now, every single firmware update that Nokia has announced HAS NOT included the US versions of these devices and HAS NOT been announced to include the US devices.

To me, it seems as if the US is still an afterthought. I would be working dilligently, even ahead of the other countries, NOT because I am in the US but because according to Elop, the whole WP strategy is based upon Nokia’s success in the US. Looking at the communication from Nokia and the factual lack of updates, it DOES NOT seem that way.

Instead of assuming the worst, I would rather ask here and get more information. Does anyone, Yvonne or otherwise, have any information. I want to give Nokia a fair chance before posting an article about the SEEMINGLY lack of support.

I intend to be fair and knowledgeable so I want my expectations and consumer expectations to be in line with Nokia’s goals for the US devices.

We regularly release updates for all phones in the Lumia range and all variants. But as it’s the policy with operator branded variants, an update has to be tested and approved by the operator before we are allowed to release it. We are preparing and submitting updates including operator variants, but it is the decision of each operator if they want to release an update to their customer base or not.

I’m not getting anywhere near your numbers for battery life, but it’s much improved over 11501, that’s for sure. I get about 18-19 hours on a charge, and it sits at my desk for 8 hrs during the day while I work – I barely touch it. Basically, I take it off charge at around 4am (it’s on a timer) and plug it in at 10pm. 11hrs of that time it does zip. Screen off. So I’m not that impressed, but at least I can get through a day which is more than I can say it did before.

Bugs that need addressing are still quite plentiful. Please fix these as I want to love Nokia, but so far, although I love WP7, the hardware is leaving a lot to be desired.

    1. End call bug. This is ridiculous. This is a phone, first and foremost, so get this right. The issue is, on calls more than about 15 seconds, the screen turns off and won’t turn back on at the end of the call. I have to hit the power button and then end call, if the other person hasn’t done so already. Get this fixed, ASAP.

    2. Volume bug. When playing games, (and some people report on phone calls), the volume maxes out initially before reducing to the set volume. This is incredibly annoying. My experience is that music in games is always maxed, but the sound effects are accurate to what the game has set.

    3. Pink hue in the center of the camera. Lots of people are having this issue as well, including me. Google it, I’m not the only one.

Please fix these issues, add wifi hotspot capabilities and then maybe it will be the phone I wanted.

Been using the 12070 firmware since Telstra launch in Australia, however the battery life is still pretty poor. There must be a huge problem with the 3G radio as it still drains incredibly fast when just in standby, somewhere between 2-5% per hour. This is only with 1 push email and 2 live tiles, wifi/bluetooth etc off, with nothing else running in the background. I’ve noticed the battery percentage behaving strangely too, e.g. one minute it’s at %30 but the next it’s gone back up to %37. While I do appreciate the updates being released, there are still major problems 4 months after release, this is unacceptable Nokia and it needs to be fixed!

Also, there has been the reported bug with HSDPA on Telstra. My device always shows the 3G icon but seems to randomly display the H icon sometimes even while in the same areas. While network speed can be fast, it still poses the question if this actually is a network issue or just an icon problem as previously stated.

Same with me, just got my Lumia 800 on Monday. I did an update yesterday an now I have 1600.2487.8107.12070 installed. But still I notice a very fast drain of the battery. I only got two mail accounts via push and one life tile, no bluetooth and I am not any kind of hardcore user..

Thirty hours is preety good for phone life. Sounds like this battery boost is well worth it.

Hi Dinesh, thank you for your answer, could you please answer me a question?, I have been askint it all over the web and no body seems to know the answer. How does Microsoft verify the country you are in to have access to the market place?
        1. The country of theThe Credit Card
        2. The network operator
        3. The country where the live id is created
        4. The regional settings of the computer with zune installed
        5. The Regional Settings of the phone itself

For example, I live in Ecuador, and I buy an unlocked Lumia from Amazon, and ship it to my country, is ther any way a can download apps from the market, for example whatsapp?

In my live account settings I have a US address

        • Anonymous

They use the country of your Live ID but don’t use CC. Use MS Points.

I also maybe found a bug. When I’m playing music and have the phone on vibrate, the music doesn’t stop when receiving an incoming call. It stops after I picked up the incoming call.

Basically you won’t notice that you are being called when you play music and when the phone is on vibrate.

What is this BS? After the update, the battery on my Lumia 800 drains just as fast as before. In normal use, where ”normal” means minimum net browsing and a few calls. Nokia, all your fancy new efforts are in vain if you can’t handle the basics!

I received the 1600.2487.8107.12070 update 2 weeks ago in India, the battery life has improved but the music quality still lacks gr8 sound. The camera needs improvement, its a shame to compare pics of a CZ 8Mp camera with other phones, which only disappoints…

Hi, I updated my Lumia 800 to 1600.2487.8107.12070 and charged it so that on the battery saver settings, it shows 100%, but the estimated time remaining is still only showing 13 hrs (15 hrs with Battery Saver On).

So, this updated has NOT improved my Lumia’s battery life.

Each morning  I unplug the phone from the charger and by the time I get home and around 8 or 9 pm the battery goes into battery saver mode.

What b***s*it.. still lacks battery. Same problem as “Len Aye” below. I charge it every night, unplug charger in the morning. When i come home from work it has gone into savermode. I have WIFI OFF, GPS OFF, BT OFF, NO FACEBOOK. I make about 3calls, and listen to music about 1 HOUR. -Battery drained.. And soundqulality.. Jesus.. now it is TO MUCH BASS!!! I have to lower it to minimum on the receiver that i have connected it to via 3,5mm plug. Via BT the sound has “normal” bass, but the 3,5 plug is crap!

I would like to “downgrade” the phone to previous F/W, but thats not possible i quess?

I’m now testing keeping the luminosity sensor off, and brightness always at Low level. I’ll be doing some tests in the next coming days… Last night I tested letting 3G on while I slept (about 8~9h) and battery drained about 20%.

I bought a new Lumia 800 a week back. It had Firmware (1600.2487.8107.12070) already installed. After 100% charge, I get only 16 hours of usage. Any reason why the update works for some and not for others?

Just curious, are Nokia N9′s still unavailable for Indians?
(I assume that is where you’re from)

Not surprised, you prolly haven’t heard much at all about N9 in India.
Only “neck-beards” would know heaps about it.

quota ” know some of you are keen to know when features like WiFi tethering
will be available.  We can’t confirm at this stage exactly when it will
be delivered, but rest assured it is on its way.  I hope you will agree
that we’ve prioritized those enhancements that will give everyone the
most enjoyment out of their Lumia 800.”

You must be joking, since you havent taken the wifi tehtering seriously.
That makes most enjoyment of my phone.
I NEED to share my wifi with my laptops/tablet i dont want to have a dongel or any other thingy.

People complaining on 16h battery lifes dont have a life. You aint awake more then 16h a day annyway.
    More then enogh for me.

I did choose Nokia once again after my iphone died hoping that YES finaly they have come to their sence.
But i lack to much things, so im thinking of going back to apple once again.

My Nokia lumia 800 still drains in 16hrs (like how it was before) after the update! anything nokia could do about this ? any updates yet to be released ?

Hi everyone, thanks as always for your feedback on the software update. It’s fair to say that there are many who have experienced an improvement in battery performance, and some who have not. Usage habits play a big part in determining how long your battery will last, so we’re not able to comment on individual situations unless they were tested in a control environment. If you’re really experiencing issues with your Lumia 800, including facing difficulties with the download (for example, getting an error code), please take them to your nearest Nokia Care centre and I’m sure the good folks there will be able to help you.

  • Anonymous

Simple question that should have a simple answer. Will Nokia ever get the the battery issue sorted, a few updates and a recent one last week and guess what…..no difference

    • Anonymous

The .NET platform is mostly designed for fast desktop machines with nearly endless CPU power. But at mobile platforms the CPU power is limited by the Battery. So perhaps you have to wait for a new processor and battery generation to get this issues finally fixed.

hhmm strange I checked through the nokia website if my carrier has the update available and it says it does!! (Orange, UK). But i’ve plugged in my phone checked numerous times but i’m still stuck at 1600.2479.7740.11451 any idea whats going on?

battery lifes pathetic, the whole zune software to update thing is a pain, why not just stick to plug in and play? alot easier and alot more conveiniant, phone crashes and freezes all the time, for example the screen will freeze and you cant turn it off or on so its just stuck like that for ages, sucks that you cant download music from mobile browser straight to phone, for a hd capable phone theres not nearly enough actually decent games available. seriousley nokia. sort it out pronto.
