Get Microsoft Office for Symbian

Published by Dinesh Subramaniam on April 10, 2012

Microsoft Office on your smartphone

GLOBAL -Third party apps can be good, but they often don’t feel quite like the real thing. That’s why, as from today, you can download the Microsoft Office Mobile app right onto your Symbian smartphone.

Until now you could only get the full Microsoft Office Mobile app on Windows Phone, but not anymore. We are happy to announce that from today, the Nokia 701, Nokia 700, Nokia 603, Nokia E7, Nokia X7, Nokia C7, Nokia Oro, and Nokia C6-01 will also get this much sought after collection of productivity apps. You can get them using the Nokia Software Update tool on your smartphone, or connecting your phone to the Nokia Suite on your PC.

Office Mobile apps will also be available from the Nokia Store in just a few weeks.

In February this year, we announced that OneNote, Lync 2010, Document Connection and PowerPoint Broadcast were available for Symbian. Now, Word Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile and Excel Mobile are the latest applications to join the suite of Microsoft Apps built especially for the latest Symbian smartphones.

The full office experience Office Mobile apps gives you quick access to your documents so that you can get more done while on the go, or when you’re not using your laptop. And because these apps were created by Microsoft, the functionalities are as close as possible – if not the same – to the Microsoft Office apps on your PC.

If you’re a Word user, you’ll appreciate the fact that with Word mobile, you can save or send documents while preserving tables, SmartArt and charts, or the pinch/zoom functionality to easily view and edit documents.

In PowerPoint mobile, you can edit presentation texts and speaker notes, or use the Outline view to quickly browse through slides. With Excel mobile, you can create charts, or insert formulae and view rich data and charts from anywhere.

Another really convenient feature of Office Mobile is that it gives you a single view to documents – whether they’re stored on your phone as files, as email attachments, or on your company SharePoint site.

There are a variety of third party apps or native apps on other platforms that go as far as allowing you to edit, but in my opinion, it’s just not the same. If you’re working on a Word document, nothing beats using Microsoft’s own app. If Excel is your thing, then you will not settle for anything less than the ability to modify data by accessing more than 110 formulae.

Office up closeIt’s also useful to know that these apps aren’t just for show. Using apps that were developed, certified and tested by Microsoft to read your work email, share notes, chat with colleagues, download and edit Word, Excel or PowerPoint files, and send them – just to list a few of the most common things that people do these days with their smartphones – ensures that your documents are compatible when you switch from your PC to the mobile phone, and that you’re not introducing any viruses that may linger in third party apps.

In tech companies, we refer to apps that are deeply ingrained into the platform or which were built specifically for a platform as ‘native apps’. The person who runs IT in your company refers to them as ‘safe apps’. If you use them, you may simply refer to them as ‘really useful apps’.

Couple these apps with all-time Nokia favourites like Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps, Nokia Public Transport and more than 100,000 apps in the Nokia Store, and you have a smartphone powerhouse in your hands.

What do you think? If you have a Symbian smartphone that falls into the list mentioned in the first paragraph, tell us more about your experience. If you have a Nokia N8, Nokia E6 or Nokia 500, we will announce availability for these smartphones later. The Nokia 808 PureView will also come with all these apps when it begins selling. For more information on Mobile Office apps or the full suite of Microsoft productivity applications, check out the Nokia for Business site.

    why not for S60v5 phones??

    • http://twitter.com/Gerii92 Gerald

Because S60v5 doesn’t support QtQuick Components that are used by these apps (and possibly some other dependencies that S60v5 doesn’t have).

And yet MeeGo-Harmattan does, & was in fact the driver in many respects for this tech :(

        • Anonymous

Did you really expect Microsoft to develop for MeeGo, which is the OS the Lumia range took over for?

          • Anonymous

            You mean Maemo6 AKA MeeGo-Harmattan.
Sure, it was done for Symbian^3…

It’s reasonable to expect the same for Harmattan.
Which (as I said) is the driver for much of the leading edge of Qt.

    I have 2 Comments.
    1) I love this update, our company has lync sharepoint, etc and all these apps integrate beautifully.
    2) Unfortunately the apps install to C: and the mail storage goes to C and I have only 60MB left after a week, so I am totally unable to utilize the apps. :(

Thanks for all the comments and questions. Yes, all the Microsoft Apps will come to the Nokia N8 and Nokia E6. We were unable to bring it to these two smartphones (and the Nokia 500) because of their software configuration. Rest assured, Microsoft Apps will come to these devices soon.

Also, Office Mobile will be available in the Nokia Store in a few weeks.

Now just get MS to update Skype on Symbian, to add in video calling.   Not much point to front facing cameras on most Nokia units, if you can’t video call.

  • http://twitter.com/heendrik25 Hendrik

Another great application for Symbian Belle – but tell me when I can expect this for my N8? A few days, a few weeks or a few months?

Another point would really be to update the Symbian Belle’s Skype app with the standard video calling feature – as there are several other agreements with Microsoft now.

Original MS Office on Symbian handsets? Awesome!
Oh wait, as usual it is installed on C:, which was just minimized to 42MB on my N8 by that glorious new Nokia Maps Suite (which cannot be uninstalled, not even single components like during the Beta). But as I have an N8, I didn’t even got the 1st Office apps package yet (which I don’t care about, but I do with this 2nd pack).
So please, please, please – listen to your users carefully. You know what they’re complaining about for ages now? Too less free memory on C:! So everything that’s not crucial or integrated part of  the OS should be installed on mass memory (at least optional).
I love to see ongoing support for Symbian, I really appreciate all that work that’s still done and I love all the Nokia apps. But what’s the point in making fantastic apps which cannot be installed or used properly due to the memory situation?
Let users choose a different drive than C: for mails, contacts, etc.. Let them uninstall the Maps Suite completely or at least unused components (e.g. Public Transport) and let ‘em choose another installation drive for apps that don’t need to be installed on C: to work properly.
And what about those 20MB reserved memory for the SW update? Is that really necessary?

since n8 has 16 GB inbuilt memory, why can’t they let install all these apps on to the n8 E drive (which is the inbuilt and fast memory).Allowing apps like nokia social, chat, quick office, adobe reader to install to this massive (in case of mobiles) will help save some precious space on C drive .Also option to change the default memory location of emails is also requested.

What I would love for someone to tell me from Nokia is WHY are these apps and all Symbian/Meego apps NOT being developed as QT applications…

If they were QT then all Nokia phones would benefit, not just symbian and not just particular releases of symbian.  It has always bothered me that even though Nokia said they were switching to QT for all development nokia maps and other betalabs projects stayed firmly with native development very much to the detriment of other QT based platforms such as Maemo and Meego – if QT was actually pushed as the main development platform then today the ovi store for the n9 would have a heck of a lot more applications available (a fully populated ecosystem as a particular ceo likes to talk up!)

Oh well with the shift to .NET I guess QT for Nokia is no longer as much of an issue…

Leaving Nokia E6 aside again. I thought this phone is one of Nokia’s business phone. Why do they keep on disregarding this phone?

Because E6 is a business phone…Nokia doesn’t care about business. Am returning my E6 this week.

its probably because of the size of our C: on the N8 this is a 50mb update and there isn’t that much space on the C:

Nokia just has to set it so the bulk of the files install onto E:… i don’t see why that’s taking them Weeks to do though when some Nokia fans have already done that within a couple of hours

took more than one hour to download with GPRS and the installer just says “Unfortunately there was a problem getting your updates.” Nokia makes us sad and unhappy recently.

Great apps, but there are two things I’m missing:
    - full SkyDrive support
    - HTML email display for Hotmail when using Exchange for Activesync

      • Soutiman Das Gupta

Hi, the problem is finally solved. There was a new update OTA and through the Nokia Suite called FP1. It was around 25 MB. I updated it and now the mail and widgets are working fine. There have been other UI changes and improvements.

Overall I’m glad that the mail is working fine.

With the FP1 update after the MS Apps, I feel that my Nokia 701 is almost at par with a Galaxy S2. However a notable exception is the inability to host any video calling app.

It’s peculiar that the S60 phones can have apps supporting video calls but not the newer S3 OS.

Video calls are enabled with Nokia Belle; you can make one by simply choosing video call when starting to make a call.

Hi. A version for Nokia E6 is coming also. The reason for a later date is the different screen resolution and form factor in this device. We fully agree on the need for this package for the great business device E6 is. Sorry for the wait. Kimmo from Nokia

will it be possible to install this somewhere other than the C drive? The C drive is really full and there doesn’t seem to be any way to make space there.

  • Munjal Savla

Hey, surprisingly, it is not showing up on my 701. Updated my E7 on the day the apps were launched. Any reason why my 701 is left out? Actually, bought the 701 just 2 weeks back, already got FP1 on it but no Office!!

Cannot login successfully into my corporate email using Office on my E7 after upgrade. Not really useful to have office that cannot login to corporate email or Lync!
