Lumia 900 AT&T Cyan

SUNNYVALE, CA, United States - This has been a memorable few months for Nokia in the US. After an award-winning product introduction at CES, followed by an incredible awareness campaign (in which we decked Times Square out in a range of colors), the stars were aligned for a successful sales start for the Lumia 900. On Monday, we saw that kind of a kick-off come to fruition, with a very positive response on day one.

However, soon after this flagship device began selling, we identified a software issue. In short, a memory management issue was discovered that could, in some cases, lead to loss of data connectivity. This issue is purely in the phone software, and is not related to either phone hardware or the network itself. As a proactive and prudent measure, we decided to take immediate action. We have identified the issue, and have developed a solution.

If you have already purchased a Lumia 900, we are making two options available to you:

• You will be able to update your device with the latest software via Zune on or around Monday, April 16th.

or

• Swap your current Lumia 900 for an updated Lumia 900

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. As a gesture of good will, every individual who has already purchased a Nokia Lumia 900 — or who will purchase one between now and April 21st – will receive a $100 credit to their AT&T bill from Nokia.

We believe the Nokia Lumia 900 is unlike any other smartphone on the market. It represents an exceptional balance of power, ease of use and value, all wrapped in one of the most stylish, striking designs ever. At $99.99 at AT&T, we think the Lumia 900 is already a fantastic deal. And now, it’s unbeatable.

This is beyond a gesture of good will…this is the kind of a response by a company that cements customers for life. I am amazed at how FAST Nokia looked into this, found the issue and made an official response on fixing it…and the 100 dollars back is unreal. Nokia…because of this little pain in the neck glitch…you have made a customer that will rave about your products from now on.

I will be with Nokia for the rest of my life… I have already purchased the Lumia 710 & the Lumia 900. With WP7, Nokia Hardware & Nokia Services (and support!), there is no better value or experience on the market.
This is over and above what is required and while my phone is not suffering from this data issue; it is great to see a company be proactive and offer numerous solutions to their customers.
If I am given $100 by Nokia I will turn right around and buy the cyan purity headphones to match my 900. I think many others will do the same. Just keep those accessories coming to the USA and we’ll buy them right up.

        Thanks Nokia!

Wow, if I liked Nokia before, now I Love them. hahaha. Havent had a single issue since the 6th of April. Love the the phone. Missing a couple apps but the phone is turning heads. I’ve had a lot of my friends ask me about the 900.

Keep it up Nokia. You’re winning over more and more people. Now if only we have a PureView Lumia….. maybe i could retire my N8.

Will the $100 credit be given to only those who had data issue or anyone who bought a Nokia.

I got it today and absolutely love it. Only problem is that the chrome in the back is very easy to scratches.

What situations cause this issue to occur? I will be out of the country and unable to update my phone for the next two weeks and would like to not lose data service. I also want to say that this type of behavior is a shining example of what great customer service looks like :)

That’s a tough cookie. If possible you should bring your computer with you so you can update the software on or around the 16th. If you run into the issue, reach out to us here on Conversations and we’ll do our best to help you out.

Does this extend to those of US who purchased our Nokia from AmazonWireless?  I don’t know if I have a data problem yet, since I just got it today but the pictures this phone takes are really, and I mean really, POOR.

I had my son, who incidentally writes for a popular webblog compare images from my Nokia Lumia 900 and one on display at our local AT&T store. No contest.

Had this phone been the one on display, there I no way I would have given up my HTC Titan for this phone. I hope I can get some feedback as to how to proceed from here.  This will not do.

If you bought it with an AT&T service plan, you don’t have to do anything. The $100 credit will automatically be applied towards your account.

It sounds like the camera issue is specific to your particular phone.  If that’s the case, couldn’t you just swap it for another one?  I think Nokia is offering that option to current owners.  Of course, I’m not sure how you would go about replacing it since it was purchased online.  I hope you can keep us posted.

Had this phone been the one on display, there I no way I would have given up my HTC Titan for this phone. I hope I can get some feedback as to how to proceed from here.  This will not do.

    Nokia For Life!!!!! Well Done

  • Michael Prince

Thanks Nokia! Also props to AT&T for working tightly with you guys and offering a bill credit as opposed to a mail-in rebate. I know the rebate would have been MUCH cheaper as most people can’t be bothered sending it in.

AT&T should also be thanking Nokia for not blaming them for their issue and allowing Verizon to make a whole campaign out of what could have been helped a whole lot with an improved antenna.

Thank you for acknowledging this issue right away. Like some folks, I had a 900 on April 6 and spent a lot of time with AT&T support trying to get it to connect. I finally inputted a bunch of APN settings until I found one that worked but that was just a temporary fix and I exchanged my phone for a new one. The new one has a dead pixel so I was kinda discouraged about quality control. But there is no way I’m going to knock off even a “single star” off my rating for this phone. Despite the bad initial experience with QC, I’m still giving this phone 5 out of 5 stars. The dead pixel went away after I massaged it with a pen eraser lol! I hereby pledge my allegiance to the Nokia brand. You can call me a Nokia sheep :-)

I just claimed an exchange for my Lumia 900 with connection issues in the afternoon of  April 10th. They said I should receive my new phone tomorrow or a day after, so will the new phone be without any problems? Are defective devices totally removed form the shelves and warehouses so that they can send me a good one? Will I get a perfect device this time? Thanks a lot.

I bought the phone contract free. So would I get the $100?

Yup, as long as you have service with AT&T.  No contract needed.

      • http://www.facebook.com/icaireac Ivan Caireac

Is “have service with AT&T” means “I am buying the phone from ATT”? Because if I am buying it without a contract means that I don’t want to have any other service from ATT. :)

That is a great effort and service from Nokia and ATT. But will that include the phones already bought and are going to be bought from Amazon with ATT service? I am confused.

What about if you bought it from Amazon? And when will the credit be applied? Time Frame?

    • Anonymous

Same question I have Jonathan. I can’t help but feel like I’m going up under the bus with Nokia. I’m probably not but the AT&T time constraints is like a noose when problems like this come up.

Techblogger, Yes just wonder how they know that I have the Lumia 900 unless they are doing a sweep of all accounts to verify activation on ATT network.  So still curios if this applies to the Phone being purchased from Amazon or only through ATT Website / Store.  Also the time frame of the Credit. Anyone from Nokia care to respond???

        • http://www.windowsobserver.com/ Richard Hay

According to another reply deeper in the comments Jeppe @ Nokia said as long as the service is with AT&T then those who purchased from Amazon will also recieve the $100 credit.  Service with AT&T seems to be the key element for refunds/credit even for no contract pricing purchasers.

I wish this had come sooner. I ended up returning my Lumia 900.

I don’t even know where to begin. Wasted my entire day Friday calling customer support agents at AT&T because I couldn’t get my phone working. I got nowhere.

I was incredibly disappointed by the time I spent and the number of people I had to talk to on that got me nowhere. I couldn’t enjoy my new purchase and didn’t want to be stuck with a phone that didn’t work. I ended up switching the SIM back to my old phone and requested a refund for the Lumia 900.

I’ve spent a lot of time since Friday getting the charges reversed for the return shipping (back to AT&T’s store), getting a credit for  a $35 restocking fee, canceling and rolling back my upgrade (and fixing data plan issues when I activated my Lumia 900, and getting a refund on the $36 upgrade fee from AT&T.

    Terrible overall experience for me.

Let me get this right. Official launch on Sunday, they do this on Tuesday and you are unhappy. Sure some preorders arrived on Friday, but this is an incredible response on the part of Nokia. Clearly they are going above and beyond trying to make things right, and they should be applauded for that.

I had this problem, went to the AT&T store. They were out of Lumias now, but another store had one. I am going to the other store tomorrow to get my replacement – my question is, how can I verify that this replacement doesn’t ALSO have this bug? I really would prefer to be able to use my phone’s data connection for the next 5 days, rather than wait for the update. Is there a way to identify which phones work and which don’t?

You will update your phone using Zune software on Windows or the Windows Phone connector on the Mac.  Mac users won’t be left out in the cold here.  (My mom has a Mac and an HTC HD7, the Connector software on the Mac works great.)

I bet it’s actually a Windows Phone bug.

    • Anonymous

It’s not a windows phone bug. It’s a Nokia lumia 900 Software problem. It hasn’t effected all windows phones

      • dividebyzero

I don’t mean a WP bug that affects all WP devices. I mean it was a problem caused by the fact that Nokia is using a half-baked OS provided by this external party. I mean I bet it was the kind of problem that is far more difficult to happen with Nokia’s Symbian and Maemo phones, where they have complete control of all the software.

Even if it was a problem caused by Nokia engineers implementing a driver or something else wrong, Windows still was the difficult OS that made the job harder.

Windows doesn’t offer anything. Part of the reason Windows phone are nice is just because they force people to use better specs, such as Nokia refused to use in e.g. the N8. All windows offers is this, these “software problems” what for some reason will never stick as MS fault, it will always look like it’s Nokia who is doing it wrong. Well, they did wrong, when they picked WP.

Greetings, first of all thank you for the potential show of good will.  But please humor me in confirming the details.  I recently upgraded 2 lines on our AT&T account on 2 different order dates.  Both phones encountered issues but was able to get it working after trying some workarounds (I just recently received the 2nd Lumia 900 on our account and just got the workaround going literally minutes before posting this comment).  Will we be getting the $100 rebate on each individual line?  If so, do we need to do anything or it will eventually/automatically be credited on our AT&T acount?

    P.S.
My first mobile phone was a nokia 6190, good to be back with the LUMIA 900!

If I buy a no contract Lumia 900 from Amazon Wireless for $449.99, shall I receive the $100 credit? I am asking this b/c Amazon Wireless does not ask for my cell phone number or account number with AT&T for off contract purchase. I am wondering how Nokia would track my purchase and give me the $100 credit in AT&T statement.

I have AT&T account and I currently use a Blackberry.

Do I have to buy the phone from AT&T to receive the credit?

    Thanks everyone.

Where is the compensation for long suffering lumia 800 with terrible battery life users, those who have had to replace their phone 3 times….those who’s phone is still not behaving as they believe it should be but can’t bare to get it swapped again as they have already had to wipe 3 devices and lose all that was on there thanks to the lack of proper backup and restore?!?!?!

    Hi,

I just wonder why to give this credit for everyone that are going to buy a completely working device, not one with this issue. It gives an impression that each and every Lumia 900 has a problem and that’s why everyone get credit.

It would be reasonable and good will to give credit to the people who has suffered from this problem. Now everyone are treaded like there’s a problem.

    • Anonymous

Indeed, as reported, not all 900s are affected. This one-time offer is a gesture of goodwill and, in our opinion, the right thing to do
demonstrate that we’re serious about customer satisfaction.

I returned my Lumia Windows Phone today. NEVER AGAIN.

So your’re saying you’ll never use a windows phone again? You shouldn’t have returned it just becuase there’s a bug doesn’t mean you return it right away. You wait for official news from Nokia first. Sigh ……..they never wait

So – a couple of fine Nokia folk are reading – a couple of us Canadians have asked about this – so how about us?  We don’t have AT&T here, but that doesn’t prevent issues like this from happening.  Will we get a credit on our Rogers bills?

I have to admit that I am pleasantly surprised by my AT&T Lumia 900. First, I have no problems connecting. It seems to be limited to a few units. As for daily use it is actually providing me with more functionality than my N8. The tight integration with our corporate Exchange server, with my OneNote files and Skydrive, and (like it or not) IE9 have solved some of the problems I had while on the road. As for apps, I really don’t use that many “extra” apps but I have found a WP version for everything that I was using before. I have also found a couple of new apps that I could not get on my N8 that I had been using on one of my Android devices. I will agree that the camera implementation is a little bit of a let down…but honestly, if I want to shoot “literature quality” images I break out a full blown camera.

4G/LTE is truly quick although most of the time I am running on wifi. Call quality is excellent, as expected from a Nokia device. The AT&T apps that I did not want were very easy to get rid of, as you mentioned. I went to the marketplace and loaded Nokia Maps and Drive so I have a familiar interface again. I wish the Beta labs folks would get going on a version of the “sleeping screen” but that might not be possible within the MS constraints. With everything loaded that I want, plus a few hundred songs and 4 or 5 videos I still have about 6GB available so I am not running into any issues there either.

When driving I always sync my phone via Bluetooth and last night I received a text from my wife as I was driving home. Much to my surprise my radio went quiet and then a woman’s voice came on and asked if I wanted her to “read the message” to me or “ignore” it. Since it was from my wife I wisely asked it to “read”. When finished it asked if I wanted to “call” her or if I was “done”. I responded “call” and in a few seconds I was hooked up. I was never able to do that kind of stuff with my N8. I think I am going to be happy with this new device.

Finally, when you reach my age you will appreciate the larger screen :-)

    Congratulations to the Nokia team.

I just went into my local ATT corporate store, and they are telling me that they will not exchange phones until after the 16th. Is that the policy that Nokia is mandating to them?

    • http://twitter.com/lisafaye77 Lisa Estrella

I just found out from Nokia Cares (US) that we can swap out before the 16th.  So that store is probably incorrect.

  • http://twitter.com/kalex1 Alex

What about those who are not on ATT? I’m on Straight talk.  Bought my phone outright from wireless store.  Any way to get $100?

  • Anonymous

I’m sure I’m having the issue, is this why visual voicemail does not work? Is there a workaround until the software update is applied, I’ll be on the road this weekend. Does resetting the phone get data back?

    • http://exonyte.com/ Brandon Amedee

Visual Voicemail works perfectly. You just need to make sure that AT&T applies the Visual Voicemail item code to your account instead of the regular voicemail. The AT&T in-store staff where I went wasn’t aware of this, but checked because I mentioned it and found it to be true. I tested it before I even left the store just to make sure.

      • Anonymous

Thanks for the reply I appreciate it. my data has worked the last few days (since discussing with ATT) they told me they couldn’t get through to nokia about the visual voice mail (wonder why).Hopefully I can be alright till the update

How about those not in the US? I’m in Canada on Rogers and bought my phone outright. Do we get a credit or are we SOL?

P.S. I’ve tried all of Rogers’ APN settings on their site and none seem to work. Anybody know how to get it working besides waiting out the update or exchanging my phone?

I called Nokia Canada, 1-888-226-6542.  They said we’re SOL, according to them the 100$ credit is from ATT and not Nokia.  Perhaps they missed the memo…

I have another issue with my phone unexpectedly shutting off.  I don’t know if this is related to the data management issue.  I have lost a few things.  I really do appreciate Nokia addressing the issue so promptly.  Kudos to them.

I need lower off contract price points on ATT.  I have a L900 for myself, but the rest of the family does not carry data services.  I would like to upgrade there x6, 5800, and IOS phones to WP.  But, 710 price points are better than the L900 for this.

So how long will the wait be for more downstream phones?

Mine 900 is having the data issue and also an issue with the “pause/next” button on my new Nokia headset (Purity in-ear).
The skip works only works if the screen is “on” (even though the phone is still “locked”).

My previous Samsung Focus didn’t have this issue.

OK, There has been some confusion now on what exactly “as long as you have ATT service then you get a $100 credit” really means. Other post have stated if you purchased from Amazon or ATT then you would be eligible for this credit.  Why would ATT give a Credit when some people never bought the phone from them? I wish Nokia would give more detail of when the credit will appear and if it is in fact that the device had to be bought from and through ATT or just the Service.  I bought my Cyan Lumia 900 from Amazon so I sure hope I’m eligible.

Not that Samsung is bad but AT&T plain su*x at supporting their handsets. I am pleasantly surprised by Nokia and I have to admit, I like my new Lumia 900 more and more every day. Today I again discovered few new uses for it. THANKS :-)

I’m a T-Mobile customer looking to buy the Lumia 900 at At&t’s no-commitment price. Would the $100 discount work for me? I don’t know how Nokia/At&t would credit the money after the purchase, but I’d love it if they did :) I’ve been using an HD7 since WP7 came out, and I’d be thrilled to be able to afford this awesome phone. Thanks for all your help!

I bought a Lumia 900 from eBay and I wanted a warranty replacement since It has the data issue. AT&T and Nokia Warranty department said I had to wait 30 days -__-” Really?! I’m not happy with my Lumia 900. I guess Nokia doesn’t care about the customer and lied about the 1 year warranty.

Impressive.   Honest.  Excellent good will.   I am impressed with this phone but I wasn’t shocked to encounter a bug (annoying as it is) since I got the phone “hot off the press”.  But I can certainly wait a few more days for the fix and getting $100 credit is sweet!

Keep up the good work and relationships.  Phones like this will really push WinPhone back in vogue and Nokia to prominence in the US

Would it be possible to address people who didn’t buy their device from ATT? Will they be recieving credit, and are they able to swap out their devices? I’ve heard of others recieving this already, but I haven’t heard anyone who didn’t buy from ATT directly getting it, nor being able to swap their device out.

I wasn’t planning on buying a Nokia phone any time soon, but seeing such a prompt acknowledgement of an issue, a fix and even compensation, has made me reconsider.

This is remarkable handling of the situation. Congratulations!

That’s quick from Nokia to act on the issue. Hope there won’t be any delays.

I traded in my iPhone and purchased the Lumia 900 and at first was ecstatic. Hands down one of the best and most beautiful phones I had ever owned. But I started having connectivity issues right away. As this phone is for work and personal use I contacted AT&T right away. I can honestly say that it was one of the worst experiences of my entire life. The customer support was rude and were no help at all. When I went to the store were I purchased the phone to ask for help, I was told that “I should have bought an iPhone”. Can you believe that! I absolutely love the phone. If the connectivity issues weren’t there I would have kept it. But because of AT&T’s horrible customer service and lack of customer support I was forced to return the phone. I simply can’t be locked into a contract with that carrier. It’s a shame Nokia chose At&t to launch this phone. I absolutely love it, love it, love it. I know that Nokia is now offering to trade a new unit for my defective unit but the damage has been done. Quite an expensive and frustrating experience, especially after dropping ver 150 dollars on apps and accessories. At&t has left a bad taste in my mouth. I hope that future Nokia Flagship phones will be coming to other carriers.

I would still like a definite answer on what happens to those individuals who have bought the 900 outright and are not using the AT&T network / service. Nokia keeps dodging this question.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6UXCV4KJAGPHCWNTVPJBQ34PVQ Jose

I have exchanged my “defective” 900 for a new one on Monday. It worked flawlessly for 3 days then today, poooffff! No data connection again. My wife and I are planning a trip to Boston this weekend and I was so excited to use my phone to find local restaurants, shops, etc. How the $&@*(!@ am I gonna do that now? I still love this phone and I still think its the best phone I’ve ever had. Just poor quality control and I’m feeling like a beta tester. LoL!

The Lumia 900 is an excellent phone.   I also use an iPhone 4s and an Android phone (all good phones too).  The physical design, camera, and the RF signal strength on the Lumia is outstanding – clearly Nokia knows how to design the radio portion (unlike Apple with their Antenna-gate sillyness).  I do wish the Lumia had more apps, but that will be solved with time. This data connectivity issue is super minor – will be solved within a matter of days, not a big deal.   Even though most (non-technical) people think Apple is cutting edge – the iPhone doesnt even support LTE yet.  C’mon. My Android phones have had LTE for literally years.  Apple has, by far, the most inferior antenna/RF section – important for someone like me who uses my phone for  (wait for it)  making phone calls !!!

When I went to the store where I bought my phone I was told that if I do swap it for new one I wont get the 100 credit. Did this happen to anyone else? Sort of lame pre-ordering a phone on launch day only to have a phone that doesn’t work while those who buy it after me gets a phone and the 100 credit.

    People First?!

Hell yes, if Nokia would care about people we would already be able to buy everywhere in north america a Nokia N9 without paying excessive costs for import devices. But Nokia doesnt care, they dont listen, they are only following their own interests… not those of their customers.

I pre ordered the lumia 900 and I do like it alot. Except the obvious issues with the netwrok connectivity. I did speeak with ATT several times via phone and they say that I need an O series sim card, not the G series. I have already had the sim card replaced once. I was kind of mad about spending gas money going back and forth to the store and no result to fix the issue. However, I am very happy that I will receive a 100 credit to my bill. That makes me breath easier

Everything I have read indicates that as long as you bought or buy by 21 April and your service is with AT&T (here in the US) and Rogers (Canada) that you will get the credit on your bill.

    Hi,

Just came back from my local AT&T store, where I was about to buy a new Lumia 900…until the salespeople at the store told me “we are no longer honoring the $100 rebate because all of the phones in our store have been updated to the new software and no longer have the data issue.”  When I explained to them that the statement Nokia put out said that it would apply to ALL phones bought before April 21, they literally said “regardless of what it says on the Internet we are no longer honoring that credit.”  They said that I would have to take it up with Nokia and MAYBE they would honor it.  I then said “But it’s a credit that goes directly on my AT&T bill!” they shook their heads and told me I was flat out wrong.

Couldn’t believe it.  Needless to say, didn’t get the phone — would not give them the satisfaction — and walked out fuming, one less customer for Nokia.

Has anyone else had an experience like this?  Or are the people at my AT&T store in Sterling, Va. just idiots?

Most people at AT&T stores are just idiots. I’ve been trying to get a phone and they literally refuse to sell me one. I tried to get them to order the Cyan one for me and they told me that couldn’t do that for another 2-3 weeks and then tried to sell me an iPhone. I’m trying to find a way to get this phone so I’m thinking I’ll just order it for $50 on Amazon.

I bought my Lumia 900 as a pre-order via the AT&T Online store and received it on launch day. I have a 2yr contract with AT&T as I had to renew my contract with the new 4G data plan, having come from a 3G plan with a Samsung Focus.

I have since updated my phone with the new patch via the Zune software.  However, I just logged on to my AT&T account to see my current bill, and it doesn’t reflect any $100 refund from Nokia.

Can someone explain to me the exact criteria for which one might get this refund applied to their bill, and which billing cycle this will take effect? (Nokia, please provide a complete response with all details required, so I can take it back to AT&T if needed)

The AT&T stores reps say that the $100 is no longer valid, because all the phones got replaced in the store.

Can someone from Nokia comment on this ? Is the $100 rebate applied to any purchase (with the s/w issue and the newer ones) from any AT&T store before 21st?

Clearly there is difference between what the media (+ this blog says) vs what the AT&T store reps say.

Hi, How do you get the 100.00 rebate from Nokia? Will AT&T automatically put it towards any customers that purchase the Nokia lumia 900? I just didn’t get any rebate information with the phone so I would like to know how to confirm that I will be receiving it. Thank you, Debbie

Also purchased Lumia on 04/11. NO CREDIT APPLIED. Called both Nokia and AT&T, and am being kicked around. So much time wasted trying to get the amount promised credited to my AT&T account.

Almost three months since the last NOKIA post here. Have NOKIA left the U.S.A.? Surely something interesting has happened since April 11, 2012. I feel like everyone has left the room.

speaking of three months – it’s been over three months since this announcement and I’m STILL WAITING for my credit – and I bought TWO Nokia Lumia 900′s – **KNOCK KNOCK** Nokia – anyone listening????

I am a current Lumia 900 / AT&T customer. I bought the Lumia 900 in April on a 2-year contract. I would like to know if Nokia USA will offer early adopter loyal Nokia WP7  customers like myself a price break to defray  the cost that AT&T levies on customers who want to upgrade their device before their 2-year contract expires. My contract has a $250 penalty for upgrading devices before Nov 2013. When I bought the Lumia 900 there was no information put out by either Nokia or AT&T that it would end up not being upgradeable to WP8.

I obviously want to upgrade to the new Nokia WP8 device coming in September. Yeah, I get caveat emptor and that it’s an AT&T policy not Nokia USA, but I’m sure there must be several hundred thousand Lumia 900 users in the USA now that are in a similiar situation.
