10 things you never knew your Lumia could do

Nokia Lumia 900

SUNNYVALE, CA, United States - For those who have recently bought a Nokia Lumia 900 or Lumia 710, we thought you might like an introduction to some of the clever ways you can use your new phone.

There are some great functions we want you to know about, that’ll enhance your phone experience and maybe turn you into a show off at the same time.

1. Take a photo without unlocking your phone

Let’s say you want quickly snap a pic by just taking your phone out of your pocket and pressing just one key. Here’s how: When your Lumia is locked and the screen is dark, press and hold the camera button. After a brief second, the phone app will come up and let you shoot photos to your heart’s content.

2. Scan a QR code without a special app

Most phones require a QR app to scan a QR code. However, with the Lumia 900 and 710, search is powered by Bing and therefore you can just tap the search button, then choose the icon that looks like an eye. From here, you can scan a barcode or QR code and be taken to the Internet destination to learn more. Very slick.

3. Make a video call using Tango or Skype Beta

Because the Lumia 900 has a front-facing camera, you can make video conferencing calls using the front facing camera on the phone. One added advantage of the Lumia 900′s front facing camera: it’s wide-angle, so you can easily talk with a friend by your side and the other party can see both of you.

4. Use the built-in FM receiver to listen to tunes via radio

This feature is hidden somewhat, but go to the Music application. As long as you have headphones plugged in, you can listen to FM radio on your Lumia 900 or Lumia 710. I love listening to NPR via my local affiliate, and the Lumia’s built-in FM receiver is perfect for this function.

5. Use Battery Saver when you need extra battery life

Sometimes, at the end of a busy day or at a conference, you need every extra ounce of life your battery can spare. If you want to eke out a few more minutes of stand-by time, check out Battery Saver.

In Settings, then Battery, you can enable Battery Saver which will discontinue your phone’s ability to get emails [EDIT: you can still make this happen manually] and a few other battery intensive operations. Calls and SMS still work, but Battery Saver has helped me out in a few situations. You can also set it to automatically kick-in whenever the battery is low.

6. Groups keep you close to who is important

In the Contacts application, you can create groups. I have one for my closest friends and one for my family, with a Live Tile assigned to each on my homescreen. That way, Facebook and LinkedIn messages for these people are updated, and I don’t have to filter them out the feed in my People application, which is key for me.

7. Use voice features on the go

I drive a lot and I always use a Bluetooth hands-free device to make sure I can keep my eyes on the road. When paired with a headset, Windows Phone can perform functions via voice such as text messaging and placing a call. For instance, to call my wife, I simply say, “Call Kimmy”; and opening and replying to text messages is as easy as following the voice prompts.

8. Easily find apps in the Marketplace without loading Marketplace

If you know the name of an app you want to install in Marketplace, there’s a fast way to get to the place to install the application. From your home screen, swipe left to reveal the installed apps list, then on the left, hit the on-screen search button and search for the application. Obviously, if it’s an app you don’t have yet, you can “search Marketplace” and be taken to the apps home quickly and easily.

 9. Find fun experiences around you using Local Scout

From the homescreen, click on the search button again. Hit the button on bottom that looks like the silhouette of a building. This is Local Scout and this amazing utility shows you places to eat and experiences to be had based on your physical location. Local Scout shows you places you may not otherwise know about and has helped me on a number of occasions.

10. Recall a business phone number by name

Let’s say you find a great pizza restaurant and you search for its phone number,  and make a call. Then, a few days later, you want to call them again – you go to your call history but you can’t remember the exact phone number you dialed earlier.

That’s not a problem on the Lumia phones. When you search for a business from Maps, then call it – the actual business name is archived in the call history, making it really quick to find the number in your call log going forward.

I would prefer MeeGo. Perhaps with a Dalvik VM to run Android apps just in case there is nothing better aviliable.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with Metro and Windows Phone 7 OS. Nothing. I owned two iPhones before jumping on the WP7 bandwagon and I don’t regret them one bit, for there is nothing my Nokia Lumia 900 can’t let me do that I need to do. Email, Text, Facebook, games, Office365, SkyDrive: Microsoft + Nokia offer has nothing to envy Apple or Android. Too bad they came in so late to the party because perception is not easy to change.

Android will lag, freeze and spew dirt on that processor, it needs an 8 core powerhouse just to launch an app

Only if you have a crappy “budget” Android. If you have a decent phone it will run rings around your gloomia.

I think the girl in the video would prefer a guy who cares more about this stuff.  Don’t wait guys, time doesn’t stop for you.

        ….aaaaand you missed the point.

The OP’s point was that Symbian offers loads more core OS functionality, not arguing who offers a larger applications marketplace.

I can play that game too: Windows Phone has only a tenth of the applications that iOS has.

Sure, Symbian is extremely skimpy with applications, that’s a given.

Again, the point is that Windows Phone as of now, is extremely simplistic-Fisher Price-esque.

I like Symbian too, a lot. However, it’s important to post tips for Windows Phone types too.  :)

    Unimpressed. Sorry.
    Symbian is more fun.

    • Jimbo

I don’t know about more fun, Windows Phone does have a nice, slick user interface, but Symbian definitely has *much* more core functionality than Windows Phone.

The fact that you need to sync with a PC client like Zune, just to load one of your own mp3s as a ringtone, shows WP’s limitation.  On my Nokia E72, you just select an mp3, wma or aac file (no codec or file size limitations, unlike Windows Phone) select ‘use as ringtone’ (or ‘use as alarm’ or ‘use as notification’).  Boom, done.

Ditto with lack of proper Bluetooth functionality, i.e. BT file sharing, or no access to the file system.

Tmobile in the U.S. is requesting the 900, so they must BE IMPRESSED.  seems America likes the Nokia 900.  One ATT saleslady said it’s selling better than the 4S.  Again, the U.S. may lead the world into the best OS and smartphones.  That could be because we have learned not to listen to the paid bashing media.  We learned that in the stock crash of 2007.   It seems the sales in the u.s. have many of the competition worried.

WebOS was better than Symbian too, in the 90′s. It’s time has passed. HP figured it out you should too. static icons are dead. Do you have to click on your cars dash to see how fast you are going or how much gas you have? I perfer to see whats happening at a glance and then decide if I want to click.

Click Search button then the music icon at the bottom. Mine does not work very well at all. It is totally hit or miss. Sometimes it takes forever for it to tell me it does not know, other times it takes forever to tell me the artist and sometimes it is instant.

My experience with the 900 has been mediocre so far.  However, I would love to see the Lumia brand succeed.  It is truly a beautiful phone and Nokia has always created solid phones.

Number 2, 7 and 9 are region specific and do NOT work at all in countries such as Hungary. What’s more depressing is that No.2 could work, but Microsoft simply choses not to enable it in other regions :( … local scout is a delight, people here see this in the ads, and when they realise that the actual phones can’t access local scout … well, no delight there I tell you. People don’t buy Lumias here, because they don’t want a half-metro experience with crushed delight and false ads. In regions like Hungary, the search button on the phone does nothing more than bring up a web browser with a very ugly desktop version search. Who would want that? And it makes me really sad, as I own a Windows Phone from the moment it was available in my country, and it has so much potential .. only if it could live up to it :(

Did you try the Nokia Maps version of finding out what’s nearby? (See my other post above.) One of the benefits that Nokia brings to the table is that they have very broad coverage for maps and place information.

Nokia Maps has a ‘what’s nearby?’ feature that has great international coverage and is based on a lots of different kinds of place ratings. Nokia licensed content from Trip Advisor, Qype, Lonely planet and many others to build up an overall rating that is used to filter and show the 25 things to do nearby. You can filter this info to just show the top 25 nearby restaurants and bars, sights, hotels etc.

What I bet few people know is that you can pin this functionality to the home screen by opening Nokia Maps, clicking on the ‘places’ pin, pressing the down arrow at the lower right of the screen, swiping right and then long pressing on whatever category you would like to shortcut.

I have Eat & Drink pinned and whenever I want to see what’s nearby to help decide where I should go I press that icon. Works very well most places across the globe.

One thing I want to know whether Lumia can do: can it be upgraded to Windows Phone 8? :)

    Cheers,

Right now we haven’t got any annoucements related to future versions of Windows Phone. We’re very much focused on rolling out our existing range of Lumia phones.

Heidi,Thank you very much for your reply. I am waiting patiently for Nokia Lumia 900 in the UK. Going to get it as soon as it is available. Anyway, I understand that Nokia may not have this information, but there are constant rumours that Windows Phone 8 would be released at the end of the year. I would expect MS to share some roadmap for Windows Phone as well hardware spec. If hardware spec is something like CPU – minimum 2 cores, display – minimum 1024×768, that it would be quite clear that Nokia Lumia range cannot be upgraded.  Also Nokia, working in close collaboration with MS, can ask for a favour and promise at least one upgrade for its flagship device. Many thanks,Rustam.

It would be SUCH a coup to just state that you’ll try your best to get Windows Phone 8 running on the Nokia Lumias. But I understand that you are probably very busy getting more current stuff right and that Windows Phone 8 is unfinished and probably next year’s topic anyway.

A great collection of tips, but some of them are not available in some countries. It is unfortunate that WP is tied to the registration country of the first hotmail address entered which can only be changed by doing factory reset and losing all the data and applications purchased in the process. For instance, this blocks many parts of Bing searches in your country, like for instance, music search by sample is disabled in most countries.

It also affects Marketplace seriously. Like for instance, if your phones’ registered hotmail is not in Germany, you could be out of luck when in Germany and wanting to download timetable and real time train information application of the German national railway company. Same is true with Amazon’s Kindle in many countries etc. There are countless useful applications which are not available in many countries.

While WP Marketplace is badly lagging behind Android and iPhone in the number of applications available, the reality is even worse when judged by total number of apps in each eco-system’s application store because in Windows Phone Marketplace the availability of many applications is so strictly restricted geographically bringing country-specific store’s application number even lower in most countries.

I would think that this intentional crippling of Lumias’s through Marketplace registration mechanish can hurt sales in many countries, where the competing mobile platforms offer phones without such clumsy limitations.

zsi. You bring up a good point re marketplace. But regarding your regional train schedule example, if you download Nokia Transport onto your device that you will have access to over 80 cities worldwide with full schedules and routing to optimally get you where you want to go no matter whether you prefer train, bus, tram, subway… One way we are hoping to get over the need for people to have to install specific apps for specific countries is to work to ensure that the core Nokia apps that relate to maps and transportation and drive navigation work in as many countries as possible.

    Good post.

If you’re an Xbox owner, then the Xbox Companion app allows for some awesome two-screen action when you’re watching movies via Zune.

It’s one of my favourite apps.

There is no Local Scout functionality in Canadian Telus Nokia Lumia 800 phones. :(

    • Anonymous

Change your search locale to USA and Local Scout works in Canada [Settings, Region + Language, scroll to the bottom and change "Browser & search language" to English (United States)]

      • Anonymous

Will it make the Local Scout application appear in my list and the GUI? There is no reference to it anywhere.

        • Anonymous

Once you make the locale change, go to bing search (magnifying glass hardware button) and along the bottom you should now have 4 icons instead of 3. The far left icon is for Local Scout.

Lawdy! Let’s not bicker about Nokia’s two platforms. WP will evolve and we won’t be surprised if what is missing now is added in WP8. We all love WP7 on the Lumia I’m sure; let’s just spread the word. I got two compliments/questions about my cyan NL900 last night when bar hopping.

As for this list, I think that’s all true for other WP devices. Maybe add in a mention of exclusive Nokia apps that other OEMs don’t carry.

Nothing on this list is specific to Nokia Lumias – your article is a bit of a stretch. At the very least qualify the story by saying it applies to all WPs.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

In case anyone else might need it, you can press the search button on the lower right. It will open Bing Search. Along the bottom you will see a row of options. One the far left is Local Scout, next to that is Music. If you are listening to music, just press and it will recognize it. You can either go to the marketplace or click close and it will store the song in history. Next is an eye icon wich will use the camera. You can use this for everything from UPC’s to QR Codes to translate text, etc., and lastly is a microhphone if you wish to search Bing with your voice.

How many of these 10 features does the Lumia 800 also have?

    • Vasco Reis Silva

      9. (No front camera, no video calls)

      • http://www.rudivisser.com/ Rudi Visser

You can still video call, provided you’re alright with people looking at your feet :)

    • http://twitter.com/velocirapt0r_ Michael Mroz

I’m a WP7 developer and was given a Lumia 800 by Nokia & Microsoft. Like Vasco said, it has all these features bar the front-facing camera.

In addition, the specs of this phone are much higher than pretty much any other smartphone (900 aside). I have never had an issue with non-responsiveness or lag, and would definitely recommend this phone.

Nokia’s Lumia 900 a great phone for most people. Those who’ve ‘invested’ heavily in the iphone/itunes/ipad ecosystem may be to far gone to consider this alternative.

    btw, call quality is fantastic
It’s easy, even fun navigating the menus.

cell phones aren’t the second coming though

Sure, after using it and some other wp7 phones:
    - try to get screenshot
    - try to find decent looking and working app (this is major), win7 works fine, but 3th party apps are s**t
    - try to use Adobe Reader
    - try to separate volume in games from voice/ring (like on iphone)
    - try to force it to use Wifi instead of Edge
    - try to get toast notifications to work (you get 1 of 100)

its platform that has great potential, but its not there yet. Mostly IMHO because bad 3th party apps. They don’t get Metro, and are very sluggish when scrolling, worst than Android.

    • http://menggoh.com Meng Goh

All good point. you can download adobe reader form marketplace though. Also another annoying features. Wi-fi turn off when the screen is off. Imagine having to sync your large music library from one of the streaming services. Not to mention every single streaming apps have complete shitty bluetooth implementation. Some don’t work, none response to forward/backward.

  • http://twitter.com/StfBauer Stefan Bauer

And the best thing about lumia. It doesn’t support tethering at the moment which make the lumia 800 quite useless for business

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/3TGKTJBR33R2Z427XWDTWOHNJE Geo

All of these things can be done with ANY Windows phone, not just nokia.  How about what the nokia does different/better/worse than other windows phones… like how long does the battery last, how visible is the display in sunlight, how does the voice and phone quality sound.  The OS and apps are the same, so these are the only real differences between windows phones.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

There’s no suggestion that these aren’t available on other Windows Phones. But, for our readers (possibly people who haven’t used Windows Phone before) this shows what is achievable on a Nokia Lumia smartphone.

In regards to feature #1. The Camera button DOES NOT wake the phone up every time. There is a clear software/firmware issue with the camera. The photo quality is not very good either. Wont focus well and very noisy.  This is heavily discussed on the XDA forums. I was able to demonstrate these FAILURES with a Windows Phone rep at a At&t store in Columbus, OH. He confirmed through trial and error that there are defects with the camera button not waking the phone and said he was going to contact his peers. I look forward to Nokia/At&t to provide us with another quick update to fix these camera issues asap!!

I am in love with my Lumia 800 BUT for the following issues :
    1. There is no time duration shown under the LOG. I mean the time is shown BUT no duration in minutes and seconds !!2. In my previous (E71) i could programm the mail in such a way that after 11 pm it will not check the mails and will commence again at (say ) 6 am in the morning. This is important otherwise the I keep getting disturbed at night !! If i put the volume low then the alarm will not be heard !!3.  If you send multiple SMS es and want to know who all it has been delivered ……all i can view is the receipt with the number …NO NAME IS MENTIONED !!!! To see the name you will have to click on the number !!
4.. Battery barely lasts till the evening.
    5.  Using the net for more than 15 minutes really heatsd up the phone !.
    6. There is no way  to delete the recent calls log….I mean it deletes in the calls list BUT does not delete in PEOPLE RECENT TILES….can you imagine what all problems it can create ;)

    • http://www.facebook.com/billy.sauls Billy Sauls

I generally turn my phone on vibrate only at night and the alarm still goes off.  I’m not 100% sure if it will work with the volume all the way down though (though I honestly think it will).  I also can’t promise it works on the 800 (since I don’t have one), but it has worked on my Samsung, LG, and Nokia 900.

we need FM transmitter on Lumia phones. So that we can play music on car radio.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MEASSIN3SIW2E7W2227PNV7JO4 Robin

      Yeah, where’s that FM transmitter? I mean c’mon, it’s 2012 over here…

      • http://twitter.com/Daves_Desk Hmmmm

Seriously, as you said it’s 2012, who the hell uses FM transmitters anymore, they are crappy sound quality.  Get a bluetooth receiver for your car like the belkin aircast, much better.  Assuming your car doesn’t already have bluetooth audio built in.

        • Fmtransmit

Everyone would use fm transmitters if they could.  Bluetooth is just another money spin and unnecessary if fm transmitters were available.  If your fm transmitter sounds crappy,  learn to use it properly, they sound superb when used correctly

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1186993407 Joshua Queen

Lol you are insanse dude. FM transmitters suck balls…ALWAYS. If you drive 10 miles a day, maybe they will be sort of OK, but the quality is still shit. No one would use FM trans over bluetooth if they compared the 2.

          • Fmtransmit

If your mind is about sucking balls here there’s not much point in explaining anything to you. But I’ll give it a go; FM quality is world renown for its clarity and has been for eons. I use FM over bluetooth and so do tens of thousands and so would millions of others if they had the opportunity. Millions of quality, classic cars have quality FM stereos with no BT.

          • Drae Day

you are wrong. I am not talking about those crappy fm transmitters on those belkin device. the ones on the nokia devices work flawlessly. If they do not then it’s probably user error. Or a bad car antennae.

        • Bataleon

My kitchen radio doesn’t have a Bluetooth receiver or AUX in. FM receivers are ubiquitous. It’s that simple :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1186993407 Joshua Queen

You have bluetooth. FM trans are old news and poor quality. Get a BT equipped vehicle and play music like that instead.

      • Drae Day

really buy a new car? ree ree. FM tranx on nokia n900 is friggan phenominal. Blue tooth has it’s draw backs though. Especially when getting next to other bluetooth transmitters. I use my fm transmitter on nokia n900 all THE DAMN TIME

The phone is a terrible joke. I have a nokia 800 for 3 months now, fully invested as opposed to investing in a Note! Soo dissapointed! Its a windows phone, yet i cant plug in a cable plug it into my pc and move, say a pdf, word doc, zipped file over. I have to email to myself or have constant 3g which eats the joke of a battery, to get access to cloud. Still means you will eventually have to download it to use it on the phone. Seriously? i cant got to options>ringtones>Choose a mp3 file from my music as a ringtone?? Really guys. I come from a village and even i could have come up with a much more creative based prison. The interface is smooth with the phone hardware, uses it well and optimum, but the ability and the lack of serious framework is really heart breaking! NOKIA should divorce NOW from microsoft. Thanks though

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1186993407 Joshua Queen

Ya because by “anyone” you mean you! I have had no issues with either of my Windows phones. I have had LOTS of issues with my Androids, and I refuse to use the for babies Iphone.

  • Farahbod Mohammadi

This is the worse phone that i have ever had. Battery drains in a few hours if you use 3g, and watch videos or use google map, I wasted my money, just go for Android or ios Phones. By the way I am using lumia 710

    • http://www.facebook.com/zahrans M Zahran Sallay

keep in mind that when using (ANY) smartphones, standby and/or talktimes will always be lower than a “dumb” phone. having said that maybe you’re using a faulty battery? if so you can easly swap it out for a new one.

one way to reduce battery consumption is to switch off 3G and/or unwanted background tasks when not needed.

google map? it’s good but (for me at least) nokia maps is the better option.

finally on the whole, the iphone has a similar talk & standby time when compared to the lumias but by many accounts android phones have a battery life ranging from similar to WORSE than apple or windows phones…

    • http://www.facebook.com/lin.is.larey Linda Larey Carey

your device probably needs a software update, failing that Nokia will replace the battery if it has a defect, but not even an android device battery will last long when you are watching videos etc

    2, 8 & 10 are new to me ^_^

But still WP 7.5 have drawbacks that I expected to be solved in Tango firmware such as:
1- Only Master Volume which control Ringing + Music volume together.
2- No Profiles (such as Meeting and Outdroor)
3- Can’t save numbers dialed during call (so u can’t save it after ending the call).
    4- No speed dial.
    5- No swipe typing.
6- Only one mobile number can be assigned to a contact (what if the contact have dual SIM phone.)
7- And no Arabic Keyboard for us yet :(
8- No Bluetooth sharing (well i can understand the viruses issue…)

Well thats all i got until now from my own personal experience with my Nokia Lumia 710…

Things you thought a 2012 top of the range (notr) Nokia Lumia 900 should be able to do but can’t.
    1. Take a spare battery. Change out on the go; why not?
    2. Be waterproof. (well it’s an issue)
    3. Use NFC
    4. Have an FM transmitter (other Nokias have it, why not notr
    5. Have expandable memory

Well anyways minimum offer should be FM transmitter and NFC

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=752479225 Chung Tin Long

      Re:
      1. Lumia is not the only option around. It wasn’t designed to be the most power-user-oriented phone, so you can’t really pick on it for this. Get a different WP that can swap batteries or something.

      2. Again, this is not the selling point. Shouldn’t we then start asking the same question about Motorola RAZR MAXX, Samsung Galaxy S III, iPhone 4S and the other brands’ flagships?

      3. NFC has very little compatibility worldwide as of now as it is too new. Even in many developed countries, it is completely unavailable at the moment. Thus, for a late 2011 / early 2012 model, both Windows Phone and Nokia would be paying extra to expedit a white elephant for most of its consumers.
This is also why WP8 and 3rd generation WP devices will have NFC as the technology becomes more and more widely used.

      4. This is not the point of a Windows Phone. The whole system was designed to become a minimalist version of the original Windows. That’s why advanced settings are cut to a minimum.

      5. Expandable memory is usually pretty useful, but think about the Lumia 900′s need to use up every square inch of its precious space. Nokia would much rather make a larger internal memory and do away with the space-wasting card slot. The Lumia 900 is a rather thin and very tightly packed device, and that is also why the battery could not be a user-replaceable one.
The WP was also NOT designed for advanced tasks that you would normally do with a computer effectively. If you need a more portable advanced task device, that is the gap for the Microsoft Surface Pro to soon fill in. Thus, expandable memory is not even necessary for a ‘essentials’ device like this.

I use a 8GB Omnia 7 (well, its battery is replaceable and extendable, so you may like this better) and 8 GB is honestly the norm of what you’ll need for a WP device.
16 GB is more than enough, but 32 GB is overkill.

The point is that Lumia 900 is, according to numerous reputable inforation sites, Nokia’s Flagship phone.  Other Nokia phones have the simple everyday user-friendly features the I have on the list but not the Lumia 900.  NFC is almost everywhere and that’s why many Nokia and other phones have it as a standard feature and the same with FM Transmitter.  Lumia 900 is not a minimalist version, it’s in direct competition to the world’s best phones.  It very inception was designed to keep Nokia from going under!  It is a flagship model of a major company that offers standard features as NFC and FM Transmitter on phones costing less.  A flagship BMW offers features not available to other models; that’s what a flagship model does.

Then don’t buy it. You sound like you’re trolling. I am a major techie, and I love the phone. The only couple of things that bug me, is my now playing list of music doesn’t scroll long titled songs, so I may just see the artist, and the keyboard should have calibration.

An FM transmitter? Are you serious? What is with people and wanting to bring the Atari of wireless back?

          • Fmtransmit

You’re no major techie dude. Maybe you’re the troller but let’s keep it civil here, we don’t even know each other. Peace. IF you were driving a beautiful classic car pre BT, complete with its original sound system you’d want FM so’s you could play your music in your car. Fact is it’s a simple hardware add-on that Nokia adds to many of its phones. My point is why not FM on the Nokia’s flagship phone?

Also, if you know an app name, you can BING it and it will give you a shortcut to go right to the app in order to download it or check the info on the app.
