Lumia 900: It’s nice to share, with tethering

Published by Jason Harris on April 19, 2012

Sharing

SUNNYVALE, CA, United States -The Nokia Lumia 900 is not only gorgeous and easy to use, it’s also Nokia’s first phone that utilizes AT&T’s super fast 4G LTE network, which is spreading like wildfire here in the United States.

It’s no joke that 4G LTE speeds are ridiculously fast! In my trials around the country on AT&T’s LTE network, I’m seeing speeds around 15-20 Mbps, which is just astonishing for a mobile broadband network. That’s roughly five to 10 times faster than what you’ll see with vanilla 3G phones.

Once you’ve had a taste LTE it’s hard to imagine how you ever got by without it, but the technology truly shines once you combine it with another brilliant feature of the Lumia 900; Internet sharing.

Also called tethering, Internet sharing allows you to turn your mobile phone in to a mobile wireless hotspot to which you can hook up all your other gear such as a laptop, a tablet or whatever gadget you need to get online. Exclusive the Nokia Lumia 900 right now, Nokia plans to add Internet sharing to other Lumia devices such as the Nokia Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 in the near future.

Internet sharing on Lumia 900 White

Internet sharing in and of itself is nothing new but with 3G you rarely get an online experience that even remotely resembles what you’re used to from home. With the 4G LTE network on AT&T, I don’t even bother with hotspots at coffee shops or hotels any more, because the connection speeds I achieve on my Lumia 900 surpass even the fastest connection a “free Wi-Fi” connection can offer.

Another interesting facet to utilizing Internet sharing on my Lumia 900 is the reaction to those who I share the connection with. Whether it’s a friend I happen to be with or a work colleague that needs to access the net to get her work done, they’re always amazed at the connection speeds they achieve while tethered to my phone.

What about you?

Would you share your Lumia 900′s Internet connection with a friend? What about a stranger in a coffee shop? Would you share with them, or have you already?

    Hello,

Lack of Internet tethering in Lumia 800 disappointed me some time ago. If it had had it, I would have bought Lumia 800. But I was lucky at that time and would get 900 instead :) But, seriously, that was a big disadvantage of Lumia 800 compared with some Android phones.

    Cheers,
    Rustam.

wow, cnet poll show 60%of new 900 users are coming from Apples and Androids. Maybe many android users are finding tethering and the beautiful os meets their needs better. Sounds like it. When I get my 900 it will be the last I use my Android also. Hopefully,it shows up today or tomorrow.

I just hope Nokia’s near future is not couple of months, tethering on Lumia 800 is long overdue.

I know the “coming” response is tiresome when, of course, you want it now. But you’ll have it.

What are you paying for the tethering?

I keep reading about all these fantastic speeds on the AT&T network with the new Nokia Lumia 900, of which I have two, and I just wish I could get something close to the speeds mentioned in this article.  I live in Chicago and at home I can only manage to get 1.51Mbps down and .72Mbps up.  And I’m supposedly only 1 mile from the closest tower.  So, what is wrong with that picture?  Granted, at home, I can connect to my home Wi-Fi and problem solved, but what is going to happen when I leave the house?  I’m going to be out roaming around this weekend and I’m going to check various locations to see what happens.

Does the problem exist outside your house? In my last flat, I could only get one bar indoors (on any phone) but outdoors there was no problem at all.

What about USB tethering? Not wifi

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

What’s the use-case when that would be better? Remember your speed is limited by the 3/4G connection, not the link to your computer.

there are advantages with usb tethering……first by connecting any symbian or even nokia n9 to laptop using usb cable, phone not only works as wireless modem(using nokia suite) to be able to use internet on laptop but it also charges phone via usb and then on laptop using software like connectify we can easily share that tethered usb internet as wifi hotspot using laptop’s wifi…..normally laptop’s wifi broadcasting strength is high range compare to smartphone so laptop’s wifi hotspot can easily be used by other devices in any rooms of home

Some hotspot apps set up an ad-hoc network and as such can only use WEP encryption, so there is a much higher risk of unauthorised access and theft of information.

That said, I don’t know the capabilities of Windows Phone’s hotspot app. If it supports infrastructure mode, WPA2 and SSID hiding, then perhaps we won’t need a USB cable after all.

        I don’t have a wireless adapter on my PC…

Yeah, I recently bought a Lumia 900, and I’ve always shared my phones internet to my PC, earlier I had LG Optimus and iPhone 4 and both of them were able to usb-tethering.
I don’t got a connection at home cuz I thought my phone were giving me the same speed as I would have with a stable connection. But I dont have a wifi-reciever in my PC, so therefor I’m wondering if it’s able to download something to make it work? Thanks for replys :)

Agreed – I’ve read a lot of Paul’s stuff over the years and he’s a journalist with a lot of integrity.

Have you guys forgotten to add this to the Lumia 800. When is the update going to release? Its a big turnoff right now.

Perhaps you could trade your Lumia 800 with a Nokia N9. It has tethering included from the start and a lot of more benefits.

Lumia 900 on AT&T requires $50 data plan to use the hotspot on the device. Unlocked ones need not apply.

What is the point of locking down tethering on SIM unlocked Lumia? Had an unlocked Lumia 900 with Straight Talk SIM and couldn’t enable hotspot, got the message to call AT&T.  What a joke!

    • http://twitter.com/AChinaMan Daniel Eichman

honest question how did u get an unlocked lumia 900? is it branded att or rogers? if att could you please share how you unlocked it?

      • http://twitter.com/counterblow the person

Called ATT and got the unlock code. Quite easy.

    • http://twitter.com/counterblow the person

Did you ever get this working? I’m in the same boat. ST SIM and the phone is unlocked. Having this “shim” inserted into Internet Sharing is a crock and a farce. ATT is scum and Nokia should be ashamed for letting them put that in there.

I bought a Lumia 800 as I was loyal to Nokia and Microsoft but the lack of tethering is really annoying me now especially as there have been numerous rumours regarding it “coming soon”. I use tethering frequently but have to swap my sim into my old phone, which is a shame because I sometimes leave it there for a day or two before switching it back. If this facility doesnt come to the 800 soon I am seriously considering getting a HTC or Samsung as they have had this basic function for some time now. Shame as I love the phone and thought I was buying the ultimate phone, clearly not, or at least not yet………..
