Nokia Lumia 900: getting the big picture

 Nokia-Lumia-900-getting-the-bigger-picture

SUNNYVALE, CA, UNITED STATES - Nokia has quite a stunner on its hands with the Nokia Lumia 900. The phone comes well equipped in the hardware department with a whopping 4.3″ ClearBlack display, LTE data capability and that huge 1830 mAh battery.

However, for me, one of the most significant virtues of the Lumia 900 is the camera. You see, the on-board camera is not only an 8 megapixel powerhouse with Carl Zeiss lens, there’s another facet to the camera on the Lumia 900 that sets it apart. The Lumia 900 has the widest aperture at f2.2 and a wide-angle focal length of 28mm.

Unless you’re a serious photographer, those numbers might have gone over your head. In laymans terms, a high aperture lens will give you very nice images, even in low-light. And if you’ve ever taken a photo indoors on a regular point-and-shoot or mobile phone, you’re fully aware of the grainy images that result. Also, the front facing camera on the Lumia 900 is also wide-angle and has a large aperture, meaning video calls will be high quality.

The Lumia 900′s large aperture allows you to create amazing shots that resemble how your natural eye focuses on a subject then blurs the background. You have likely seen photos taken with a Digital SLR that have bokeh, that effect that shows parts of the seen that lie outside the depth of field. If you take manual control of the aperture on the Lumia 900, you can can create this effect on your phone, resulting in images similar to the one below:

Showing bokeh

I’ve used the Lumia 900 to conduct video calls and have taken advantage of the front facing, wide-angle camera. It’s especially nice when calling someone on Skype with my daughter accompanying me, because we can be side by side and the other party can see us both easily. It makes for a more comfortable video calling experience when you’re with another person.

Have you utilized the Lumia 900′s wide aperture camera capability? Post your photos! We want to see!

First off, I love the Nokia 900, that being said the camera is a major disappointment. If Nokia seriously paid any attention to any of the various windows 7 phone blogs they would acknowledge that the majority of Lumia 900 owners feel the camera is the most glaring feature that needs improvement

I know what Lawrence is talking about here. Not sure if the software is simply not keeping up with the hardware, but I haven’t been able to get anything too exciting in low light situations with the Lumia 900 camera.

Elop’s structural changes at Nokia has undoubtedly resulted in less R&D money

“I haven’t been able to get anything too exciting in low light situations with the Lumia 900 camera.” :-) I’ll be less diplomatic: Lumia’s low-light performance sucks. Actually, even in full light, using the auto mode is a hit or miss. You can get nice shots if you adjust settings, put it on something sturdy (to avoid shaking), and try a few times, but for the capture the moment in auto shots (i.e. real life use), camera really disappoints. Very nice phone otherwise.

It’s actually MS’s fault. The Nokia N9 takes pretty decent pics

Doubt that. Other WP take amazing pics. Try Titan II and Focus S. Nokia had problems with 800′s camera and it was then fixed by a subsequent update. Hope 900 can be fixed ASAP.

Most other WP’s outshine the lumia 900′s camera.  Its an issue with auto settings, white balance, exposure ect.  Needs to be fixed asap.

I agree, I only wish my Lumis 900 could rival the fun pictures my friends capture with their iPhone and Camera+. I’m no photographer: I simply want a quick, fun camera phone.

Agree, the camera issue is a real dealbreaker. Nokia really need to step up and fix this as it’s definitly a sw problem. Several sites reports big improvement on picture quality using 3′rd party software.

Why is Nokia STOPPING Skype video calls on the Nokia N9? Why cripple your own device? Enable Skype video calls!

I tried a photo from Creative Studio, and the photo quality does seem to be better.

Surely *somebody* at Nokia has seen users’ photos of the infamous “pink spot” in the middle of the Lumia 900′s photos??? Or is it a case of head in the sand (again…) ?

The Lumia 900′s “default” low-light performance suffers horrendously contrary to what I’ve read in many reviews.  Unless you have an understanding on how to manually manipulate the camera settings, you’re likely to just hit the capture button.  When I took pictures at night at a concert on the default settings or at a dim-light lounge where flash was manually set to “off,” the image was completely washed out from stage lights at the concert and everything in the foreground (closest to me) was grainy at the lounge.  So even if the camera consists of Ziess optics and 8 MP, it performs horribly.  My two-year old iPhone 4, on the other hand, still captures photos sharply with the OmniVision optics at 5 MP.
