Nokia 808 PureView: new pics and initial availability

Nokia PureView 808

GLOBAL – Today, Nokia announces that the Nokia 808 PureView will start to hit the shelves in May. The Nokia 808 PureView is the first smartphone to feature Nokia’s award-winning PureView technology, with a high-performance sensor, exclusive Carl Zeiss optics and amazing imaging algorithms that together create pure pixels, pure clarity, pure control. Pure genius!

The roll out will begin shortly, with Russia and India being among the first to receive this new smartphone. Additional countries will be announced in the near future.

As well as receiving Best Mobile Device at Mobile World Congress 2012, the Nokia 808 PureView has also picked up the Best Imaging Innovation for 2012 from the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA).

Jo Harlow, Head of Smart Devices at Nokia, said:

“PureView has completely raised the bar on imaging performance for the whole smartphone industry – and Nokia is not stopping here. We’re going to carry on developing PureView for our future smartphones in ways that will again revolutionize the imaging experience.”

The Nokia 808 PureView uses a large, high-resolution 41-megapixel sensor with high-performance Car Zeiss optics and new pixel oversampling technology to create stunning photos that have never before been possible on a smartphone.

Plus, The Nokia 808 PureView also includes full HD 1080p video recording and playback with 4X lossless zoom and the world’s first use of Nokia Rich Recording which enables audio recording at CD-like levels. Previously, this has only ever been achievable with external microphones – not now, though.

Audio playback on the Nokia 808 PureView is first-class. Featuring exclusive Dolby Headphone technology, the sound delivered from your Nokia 808 PureView transforms stereo content into a personal surround sound experience over any headphones and Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 surround playback is also included.

Need more proof that the Nokia 808 PureView is the best cameraphone on the market? Take a look at these new images from the official flickr set taken with the Nokia 808 PureView.

Also announced today, Nokia and Carl Zeiss have agreed to continue their exclusive partnership, a collaboration that has resulted in a whole series of best-in-class cameras on Nokia smartphones.

“Carl Zeiss was a crucial partner in the creation of the first PureView experience,” said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices. “The benefits of our ongoing collaboration will be more PureView innovation and further advancements in smartphone imaging in the coming months and years.”

Are you looking forward to the Nokia 808 PureView and its technology? How will you use it? Let us know, in the comments below.

Any information on when it’ll be available in other markets? Also, the list of countries it’ll be available?

Not yet, but we’ll update you when we have more news on this.

    • Mike Day

My fairly cynical view is that they are limiting this information as they don’t want the 808 to affect the push of Lumia devices in key markets, thus no new on UK release.  I hope Nokia prove me wrong.

      • NMo9

They did the same with the N9. But for the N9, we at least had a list of available countries during the announcement…

I don’t think the 808 will affect the Lumia sales since the there isn’t a Lumia competitor to it. The N9 had one in 800.

kudos where deserved and if 808 PureView lives up to real life use, it should be a real winner, actually like Symbian know with that sensor will not come to a E7 form factor :( so if can type on-screen the 808 will be our new phone/s…

WE NEED 808 PUREVIEW IN THE US (UNITED STATES) WITH SYMBIAN

@kkt45:disqus …Surely, this device will be available on Amazon or NewEgg.  Carriers don’t want Symbian, but you knew that already.

Pureview with Windows Phone for the U.S., FTW!

      • Anonymous

Will they support the phone in US even thought it is not sold through carriers?.
If i have to buy a windows phone it will be Samsung not nokia. I always stick to symbiam.
We need a major LAUNCH in US for the 808 Pureview. Its not fair how Nokia is treating its US based Symbian FANS.

Selling Windows for phone dirt cheap and hiking up symbian phone prices.
What kind of marketing strategy is this?

Nokia need to stop forcing Lumia and only Lumia on the world’s major markets, and get a clue that (as the sales figures show) – many people don’t want Lumia, they want CHOICE. And they want Symbian phones. And they want the 808.

So wise up Nokia, and have the balls to release the 808, WITH major fanfare, in the UK, in mainland Europe, in the USA etc.

Nokia at least appears to be in dire straits financially and in market presence and you cannot afford to continue the slow corporate suicide of pushing nothing but Lumia when the masses clearly don’t want it, and can’t be bothered to wait for it when much better products will be available (808 Pureview, Galaxy S3, iPhone 5).

Now, all we need is price info. Would it be a barrier or enabler to help me jump from N8 to 808 or make me wait for 1 year for W8 based phone.

Even apart from celebrated camera and multimedia the upgrade is really very enticing
    - office apps
    - better processor, ram and battery

Then there are others which I don’t know how relevant they would be like NFC

Would I be losing on anything that my N8 has? Would I get to run all the OVI music that I have downloaded on N8 in its first year? Would 808 also come with music unlimited or equivalent?

I don’t think I’ll buy this if a new Pureview device is going to release itself months later. They need to be on point with sales and the future. I would prefer a Lumia Pureview device because of the apps and the apps only. Nokia Belle is more than enough for me. It would be perfect if it had all the apps iOS/Android has.

Nokia  N9 on us. Make sure your hardware and software is good this time, and DO NOT OVERPRICE AND LIMIT SALES ONLY TO SOME COUNTIRES of the Nokia 808 PureView RM-807 like what you did to the Nokia N9.

Congratulations! Now, please market it everywhere! Please don’t do what you did to the N9 – 14 countries at launch, and it stayed that way. Let us, the consumers, choose. Don’t create protectionist  markets for the Lumia. If you do, you will slide even further. It is remarkably baffling why you would erode a substantial, loyal userbase to try to gain market acceptance for your new child. Make this available globally is my request. And I mean, in the US too! Its a shame that Samsung has released a quad core processor phone (Galaxy SIII) and nokia has not even released a dual core phone. How can you out-sell them with mediocre specs in your phones. I guess maybe 2014 is when you wake up to the real world.
I want to see dual or quad core processors  in Symbian phones. We want it not to be fast but lightening super fast. That’s what i talking about.  Stop slacking guys. Forget windows.  its will crush with it.

Remember: If you fail to lead, then you will be led.

Nokia is being led by Apple & Samsung after failing to lead the smart phone world.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1224743977 Danijel Lučić

It’s not all about quad core! ;)
If an single core device is running also fluid and has more things I need why should I go for the quad core device!?
And fyi -> the international version of the HTC One X (quad core – 1.5GHz) has lost to the US (AT&T version of the One X) with “only” 1.5GHz dual core on benchmark tests!! ;)

So I just hope Nokia releases the 808 as soon as possible!!

to kkt45: You should start using more common sense instead of BS.

      1) Symbian, although, efficient and fast on current era hardware, is so densely coded that hardware changes are very difficult to implement. Hence this takes (a lot of) time. Some examples.

      a) Symbian is limited to nHD (640×360) or VGA (640×480) resolution. NO, that fairy-tale Fujitsu-phone is not real and doesn’t run Nokia Belle OS. So do not throw that in my face as evidence.

      b) Symbian is limited to broadcom cpu’s containing a single ARM11 cores…

      c) … with this in mind Symbian developpers use companion-processors (like GFX Videocore) as secondairy processor units and offload (some) code to them instead of using the main cpu-core. This makes it even harder to implement symetric-multiprocessor on Symbian.

D)… But  because Symbian is optimised to work with companion-processors it’s fairly easy to add another companion processor and offload certain task to it. THIS IS EXCACTY WHAT PUREVIEW IMPLEMENTATION IS ON NOKIA 808 PV!!! Nokia added another companion gfx-core to process image-sensor data. THIS HAS BEEN TOLD BY NOKIA ITSELF e.g. Mr. Dinning explained this thoroughly (listen to his review… again!). Since

      What has this for consequence.

      1) it’s quite difficult to implement this to other phone OS’s since they don’t rely on companion chips but use multiple cores approach to process more data. THIS IS THE PRIMARY REASON WHY PV WAS NOT USED ON A WP7-PHONE! Because WP7 can’t handle multi-core nor companion co-processor like Symbian does.

       2) WP8′s approach to handle more data is ALSO based on multi-core main processors. So Nokia has to re-write and modify the current PureView implementation for multi-core OR
      Microsoft must open it’s code
to use companion gfx-chips (like Symbian).

Another aspect is that WP8 is designed with multi-core and multi-resolution displays in mind so OBVIOUSLY Microsoft will not devote any more time to a (crippled in this respect) WP7 than necessary. So you DEFINITLY won’t see WP7-devices with PV-tech. This gives Nokia time to rewrite code for PureView-processing to ofload to other cores instead of companion chips (unless Microsoft does allow companion cpu’s.

Elop declared Symbian ‘dead’ because it would take too long to modify Symbian’s HAL into a micro-kernel with a modular approach to threads, ofloads to multo-core cpu’s etc… Not because it’s a bad OS. This doesn’t mean that Nokia isn’t working on it.

Anyway dome people just can’t understand how difficult it is to actually build an operating system (and changing it to reflect industrial changes in technology). They keep moaning about Nokia should this and that and multi-core and more pixels blablabla.

Sorry for the longwinded rant but I just couldn’t stand reading another naive comment about Symbian should have multi-core cpus etc.

In ESSENCE Symbian^3/ANNA/Belle DOES uses multiple cpu’s because it offloads more tasks to the videocore-gfx-processor than any other phone OS out there (that’s why it is so relatively performant with lower clocked cpu’s). I hope I made matters more clear to the more naive amongst us.

to kkt45: You should start using more common sense instead of BS.

Hey, BTW your tone of reply is very appalling.
The use of dual and quad core processors is just a marketing gimmick being use by manufacture to convince the average user that their product is faster. All i am trying to say is that for a phone to appeal to the average naive user it has to get some tough specs. Symbian Donna is speculated to run on dual core processor devices. which means they are working on it but  the pace is very slow. The market is moving very  fast failure to catch in time will be disastrous.
Nokia failed to catch up with the touch screen technology with pinch to zoom stuffs in 2007 when Iphone was released. Symbian 3 came in 2010 which by that time Iphone had already captured the market. Timing is very important here.

Nokia should stop nitpicking which country gets what device and what colour! Nokia should sell their entire portfolio of devices everywhere to everyone, no matter what OS it runs (Symbian, WP or even MSDOS for all I care). As long as it has a Nokia badge!

They did this with the Nokia 701. That I wanted in black yet only the silver version is on sale in this whole fricking country! Since this is gonna be Nokia’s most expensive phone to date they MUST do some effort to sell it to all who wants it.  Re-open the online store if necessary (Google also re-started it’s own online store because they know that there’ll be less Android devices on sale in 2012 from their “partners”)

To everyone : I work in a small to medium reseller / retailer store. I have friends who works for our country distributor. We need production numbers in sales. We need for someone to help us how to distribute Nokia handsets when and where they need them. Help us help you guys. We can do this for at cost with no profit at all, you pay for the shipment freight collect and deal with your local customs / tarrifs.
Right now, Nokia needs all the help they can get.

I only wish it looked more like the N8 instead of the C6… But I guess I should be happy with the fact the 808 even exists.

Nokia’s marketing strategy needs a complete overhaul. They are making losses and yet they are not aggressively marketing their products. Trying to push one product over the other is completely stupid. If Symbian devices or meego devices or WP devices sells, who gets the profit. Guess who? Nokia!. So why not devote the same efforts and resources to market and sell your products world wide. Today you hear of device X being sold in some areas only while people are demanding the products where it not being sold.
This strategy does not work according to financial reports. Unless making losses is your goal, which i doubt.
Symbian and Meego  devices need some advertising and dedication to OS from Nokia.

    • Anonymous

Correct. Again what I’ve been saying all along. Nokia could look a bit to Samsung. They sell ALL their devices EVERYWHERE. They don’t care what ‘customer wants’. They flood the market with goods, no matter what OS as long as it has a Samsung badge.

Nokia should do the same. It shouldn’t matter what Nokia device punters take home, as long as it’s a Nokia device. Nokia has a nice trio of exellent smartphone OS’s.

Symbian: the swiss army knife, the worktool

harmattan: the true iPhone killer and a potential worktool. Beauty AND brains.

WP7: bling bling and no Substance. A direct attack iPhone and attraction for the more ‘shallow’ amongst us.

They ought to build a range of easy devices with each one of these OS’s.

Plus they should stop enforcing WP7-devices to users whom don’t want them.

That’s what is taking its toll. Unsatisfied customers whom want e.g. a 808 Pureview in a country where Nokia-suits decides NOT to deliver it but only concentrate on Lumia’s. The debacle of Australians in this forum is the prime example!

And if the retail-channel works counterproductive… then re-open online stores… PRONTO!

In fact on a fellow pro-Symbian forum I posted this:

      —-

Nokia’s portfolio should IMHO be like this

      Symbian 601 : 3,2″ 1 or 1.3GHz, 512 Ram , no storage, EDoF : 250 euro
      Symbian 701: 3.5″ 1 or 1.3GHz, 512 Ram, 8GB in. storage, 8Mpixels N9-camera-module: 300 euro
      Symbian 801: 3.8″ 1 or 1.3Ghz, 512 Ram, 16Gb in. storage, 12Mpixels N8-camera module: 400 euro
      Symbian 901 (808PV) : 4.0″, 1,3Ghz, 512 Ram, 16/32GB in. storage, PV-camera module: 500 euro

      Lumia 610: 3.2″ WP7 model, no storage, EDoF : 200 euro
      Lumia 710: 3.5″ WP7 model, 8GB in. storage, 8Mpixels N9-camera-module: 250 euro
      Lumia 810: 3.7/3.8 WP7 model; 16Gb in. storage, 8Mpixels N9-camera module: 350 euro
      Lumia 910: +4″ WP7 model, 16Gb in. storage, 12Mpixels N8-camera module: 400 euro
      Lumia 1010: +4,3″ WP7 model, 16/32Gb in. storage, PV-camera module: 500 euro

      Asha/Harma N6: 3.2″ Meego Harmattan, no storage, EDoF : 250 euro
      Asha/Harma N7: 3.5″ Meego Harmattan , 8GB in. storage, 8Mpixels current N9-AF-camera-module: 300 euro
      Asha/Harma N9: 3.9″ Meego Harmattan, 16Gb in. storage, 12Mpixels N8-camera module: 400 euro
      Asha/Harma N10: 4.3″ Meego Harmattan, 16/32Gb in. storage, PV-camera module: 500 euro

And use the SAME cases e.g. Lumia 810/910/N9/801 etc
      and 701/Lumia710/Harma N7 –> same case as C7-00/701
White, red, black pureview cases accross all PV-models

      The 9-series have a small bump and the 10-series a larger PV-bump :-)

Completely ditch S40 (which is useless in this day and age of smartphones) as a ‘smartphone OS’ (talking about a burning platform) Then Nokia would have a clear and consistent productline with a vision. ALL their products would be easy recognizable across the entire portfolio. Each line covering enough target to suit everybody and enough OS-grade diversification plus cost reduction due to recycling product design and H/W-elements accross the entire portfolio. This way the R&D costs would be spread over the entire range.Unlike the current situation where Nokia spend millions on N8-camera module to be utilised in only one model. How stupid is THAT!

Also in the above example there are additional WP7-models to give enough leeway to promote WP7 and less Harmattan models as an incentive to honor the Microsoft agreement, without hurting the current range of (Symbian) products/customers (which even today still accounts for majority of sales).

Because in the end. It shouldn’t matter what OS costumers use on their phone as long as that phone carries a Nokia badge.

      Just my 2 cents

      • Adam Duus-Boolsen

“Nokia could look a bit to Samsung. They sell ALL their devices EVERYWHERE.”
They don’t, actually. Here in Denmark, they only sell the 16 gb version of the Galaxy S3 – grrr!!! :(

        • epdm2be

Yes, I know. The same in Belgium and Holland. It’s evn worse, for the moment only the white version is available (IMHO the blue version looks better).

At least we can get the SGS3. And if you need more storage then you CAN insert a micro-SD card to expand it (inlike the N9/Lumia800/Lumia900). While the Nokia 603 is nowhere to be found. Similar story with the N9 (which is on sale in Belgium but not in Holland). In fact I’ve never seen the 64GB N9 especially not that white one.

I’ve got no problem that Nokia favors their Lumia-range but deny a sale because of that, is just pure stupid. If there’s a market for a certain device then, sell it. Although there are probably ulterior motives for this situation.

Again I have no problem that certain models are not sold everywhere. Like the Batman Lumia 900 which is only on sale in Britain. As long as there’s a base model available.

In my own case I wanted an N9 but didn’t buy it because I wanted the 64GB model (as the memory arangement on the N9 Harmattan leaves a little to less free storage on the 16GB model to my liking). Thus in my case Nokia lost a sale of a expensive top model (and ‘m definitely not the only one).

In the end this will inevitably comes back to Nokia sales figures. But I’m sure that Mr. Elop has a perfectly good explanation for this >:->

        I agree with this guy.

Making one version of a camera to be used in one phone is not proper utilization of the economies of large scale.

Another thing I want to add is that models should be continued for as long as possible with the same name…

For example, in 2015, when Lumia 800 or N8 becomes outdated, it should not be discontinued…

It should be updated features wise to make Lumia 800- 2015 model and N8- 2015 model, just like automobiles…

I benefit is that past’s advertising contributes to the present & future brands, and ‘products’ become ‘legends’…

Like Honda has its CBR from 1990, and its past advertising has made its present easy, and CBR brand is now a legendary brand….

‘I’m myself an MBA and I wish I had a senior job at Nokia… would’ve done some things differently.

        Now, with 808 you’re removing N series too…??

  • TechInsane

The phone, is hot but what about the other features? call quality, email etc?

I guess this is enough waiting already. Can anyone tell me when does the 808 come to Indian stores?

I’m so eager to buy it, and sell my N8 in the process.. (yes, sell N8, for some cash contribution obviously, but would love to keep it)

Nokia 808 PureView Technology 41MP= 60 months or 260.7 weeks or 1,825 days or 43,800 hours or 2,628,000 minutes.

That is a total of 10,461.891 man hours!

The average minimum contract term for a factory in China = 6 months or 26.07 weeks or 182.5 days or 4,380 hours or 262,800 minutes.

That is a total of 1,046.1891 man hours!

A tenth! A tenth of ALL your efforts!

You should capitalize all of your hard work, sacrifices of blood, sweat and tears and MARKET and SELL RM-807 like CRAZY!

How many employees lost their jobs, resigned or stressed out due to work? How many families suffered for this? How many individuals toiled for this? How many children had to be without their dad or mom or brother or sister just to have this product released?

And now all of their efforts YOU WILL FLUSH DOWN THE TOILET?

Please Nokia. Do the right thing. For just even ONCE in your corporate life.

    • Samarth Singh

Such a sentimental post, it brought some tears to my eyes…

Ok. But what is this “right thing” that you’re suggesting Nokia should do? :D
They have already released it in Singapore, right?

(I just wished they’d have released in India first, but sad.)

      • steelicon

Do what they did for Nokia Microsoft Lumia Series for the Nokia 808 PureView RM-807. And please, do not shortchange the client base. We are the most loyal customers Nokia will _ ever _ get for years to come.

Ok, now its clear what you were saying. And I agree a bit…

They shouldn’t advertise the 808 too much, that increases its costs. One way they can treat the 808 as premium is written below: Symbian/ Belle is not a bad OS like Nokia people think…. Its good… But for the changing times, Nokia should just:1. Upgrade it once in the next year, to keep up with times,2. Get 50-100 free apps made for Symbian, the essential ones like RAR file opener, MP3 cutter, Tag editor, Media players, Sensor readers, etc. Believe in quality not quantity.I would choose an OS with 1000 softwares rather than the one with 1 Lac, only if the first OS’ apps are good quality, advert free and a free utility.3. And make changes so it can support a screen resolution other than 640×360…And it should retain its lost glory.

Hey check it out. It’s the Nokia 808 PureView. It comes with an official Joby Magnetic Gorillapod Tripod as well as an 808 camera stand. Equivalent price at £379. Not bad at all.

i am from united arab emirates and i just had my nokia 808 white .. though to share some pictures with you

        inside the box mini tripod

the price is 2149 emarati dirhams which is equal to 585.240 USD

The 808 PureView comes in its own standard packaging but the whole pack in itself comes in another box. That’s pretty neat, no? There’s a leaflet stuck to the top showing additional very useful accessories such as the camera cover and charger stick.

This should be the all region all market standard bundle for the exclusive special edition for the loyal Nokia client base and the early adapters.

C’mon Nokia, give a little love!

  • Samarth Singh

“” The roll out will begin shortly, with Russia and India being among the first to receive this new smartphone. “”

Guys. What kind of misguiding is this??

Vietnam received the 808. Singapore received and posted their box pics too, over the net. UAE received… And India is still waiting. I’m still waiting to get my 808.

This is sad. Why do you guys misguide? To create news?

Truly, brand loyalty is so-so ignored in all these corporates… Pardon me, if I spoke anything wrong. I can list sources of the information I posted here…

    • Samarth Singh

Finally, The 808 is released here… will get one for myself, on this Sunday or the next depending on my workplace requirement…

But they should’ve actually sent it to India first. Anyways, business world, isn’t it? :D

  • steelicon

    3 black, 1 white, 1 red.

  • Samarth Singh

Atleast Australian Guys didn’t get false promises for first release like we, the Indians got…
They said India would be among the first. Its the last now, after Russia, UAE, Vietnam, Singapore, and God knows how many more countries…I was thinking that since we Indians would get it first, I would publish a good first review and pics set on my favorite sites and blogs. But not anymore.
(PS: I don’t think this should get deleted, as I’m not giving false statements… Its the damn truth, politely put though.)

Maybe we are the test market and the beta testers for India? :p

    Nokia 808 PureView RM-807 @ PHP 24,900.00

Why did Nokia Philippines via Nokia Singapore via Nokia, Inc., limit the shipment of Nokia 808 PureView RM-807 to only 50 units when there are 55 Nokia Concept Stores, 2,990 Official Nokia Dealerships in the Philippines.

Yes, that is right, 50 units only of Nokia 808 PureView RM-807 arrived Monday morning, 11 June 2012. By Wednesday night, 13 June 2012, all stocks are sold out.

As you know there are lots of gray and black market Nokia phones coming from every market.

These DO NOT PAY Philippine taxes, and as such your actions by not bringing in more legit units may be frowned upon by the Government as unsound practices.

This is not good for your Nokia Concept Stores, your Official Nokia Dealerships in the Philippines as well as for Nokia, Inc.,

I just wanted the whole world and you to know.

Thank you for your continued and unwavering support!

    Long live Nokia!

I think they’re under pressure for a quick launch… So, lesser units sent are ok, in my opinion. People are wrong when they take black market phones and don’t give our government its due tax.

That aside, Yes, Nokia could’ve managed a better launch than this.

One month late for launch, Units are not in too many numbers, first launch promises broken, no FAQ’s yet posted on this site…

Will a Nokia staff reply back to clear what exactly happened? Please?

      • steelicon

Wanna bet if this were a WP7.5 Lumia device with PureView they will have brass band marching on every major city with motorcade and a night time party ’til you drop launching?

Poor Symbian/Nokia Belle users. 14 years of loyalty down the drain, all for no good reason.

No wonder we’re all in such a bad shape.

Can’t wait for this phone!!! Great job Nokia! :D

  • Samarth Singh

Just went yesterday to buy the phone… at the shop I trusted the most. Was SHOCKED to hear the pricing…

    N8: 17,000 only…. nice. Very VFM.
    808: 32,000! (almost double of N8′s price??)
Galaxy S3 from a particular other company: 37,000.

I thought Rs. 27,000 would’ve been enough to get 808, which is a cool Rs. 10,000 above N8′s price. But NO, it was not.

I have tested the S3 with my friend, and it was amazing… I know multimedia wise 808s better, but compare the specs and ask yourself… just rs. 5000 difference between s3 and 808??

This is coming from a loyal N8 customer: The company has taken customers for granted and will suffer for it.

No FAQ’s, no decent articles, no replies to our queries, all the time just promoting your partners who made the sound chip or took 808 to Everest.. And now the pricing is the worst!!
Will think about S3 seriously now.

Thanks for announcing the Nokia 808 PureView in our locality. Now please bring in the stocks. Thank you very much Nokia! :-)
