Young, fast and fun: meet the Nokia 110 and Nokia 112

Published by Ian Delaney on May 15, 2012

GLOBAL – With the launch of two new phones today, Nokia continues its mission to connect the next billion to the Internet. The Nokia 110 and Nokia 112 offer a young, urban audience the power to connect on social networks, get fast, inexpensive access to the Web, and keep themselves entertained with an exclusive bundle of 40 games from EA.

Nokia 110

SPECS

Screen: 1.8-inch TFT LCD; 128 x 160px

Dual SIM capability

FM Radio & Media player

VGA digital camera

Operating system: Series 40

Size and weight:

Nokia 110: 110 x 46 x 14.8mm; 80g

Nokia 112: 110.4 x 46.9 x 15.4mm; 85.5g

Radio: GSM  900/1800

Connectivity: GPRS/EDGE, 2.0 mm Charger Connector, Bluetooth v2.1 with EDR, 3.5 mm AV connector

Both devices come with Nokia Browser, which reduces data consumption up to 90%, saving time and data costs. The phones offer direct access to Twitter, Facebook and other social networks from the home page. Email and Instant Messaging are also supported to keep the phones’ owners connected to their friends. The Nokia 112 also comes with the eBuddy instant messaging service preloaded.

The EA games will be downloadable from Nokia Store through an icon pre-loaded on the phones. Owners will be able to download the games for 60 days, starting from their first access to the offer. Key titles in the collection of 40 include classics like Tetris®, Bejeweled®, Need for Speed™ The Run, Monopoly Here & Now, and SimCity™ Deluxe. After downloading the games, they can be kept on the phone forever.

But it’s not just games. There’s a VGA camera built in so you can capture the moment when you’re out and about. To keep your ears entertained, there’s an FM radio and a media player that can play both video and music. Both support MicroSD cards up to a capacity of 32GB for massive media storage.

Both phones also come with Dual SIM capability, with Nokia’s unique Easy Swap technology allowing for a fast switch without opening up the phone. The phone remembers personalisation details from up to five different SIM cards, so it’s easy to share without fuss or keep swapping so you get the maximum value from different operators. Single SIM varieties of the Nokia 110 – dubbed the Nokia 111 (which is also quad-band) and Nokia 113 – will also be available in some countries.

Nokia 112

After all this, you might be asking what the difference is between the two phone models? Good question and it’s fairly subtle. The designs are very slightly different. Also, while the Nokia 110 offers 10.5 hours talktime from a charged battery, the Nokia 112 offers 14 hours. Standby time on both is measured in weeks rather than days: 26.5 days for the Nokia 110 and 35 days for the Nokia 112.

Before local taxes or operator subsidies the Nokia 110 will cost around €35, while the Nokia 112 will cost about €38. The Nokia 110 is expected to ship in Q2 2012 while the Nokia 112 will be available from the third quarter.

Will these phones be sold outside of emerging markets? I’d love the 111 here in Finland!

Not sure about any individual countries, but the 113 is targeted to Europe and Eurasia.

We are living in a global world. I’m still unable to understand why Nokia is refusing to sell some devices globally.

It feels like living behind the “big wall” in a censored, restricted world.

For the name of “subtraction design”, they turn off the light. Although we might think that all living things should need it.

    Wow.. this time I’m happy.

Super cheap Dual SIM phone with Bluetooth, Camera, EDGE internet and Micro SD card support.

Great keep it up and also bring all these feature to your Naive Windows Phone OS too.

I still have an old 3310 in my care for emergency use. I also use it wen I travel to keep my home sim inside and keep it on without worrying about battery life. But after 10 years of service battery is not the same, so 112 can be a good choice to replace it.

Still loving this simple, light phones

These super-cheap dual SIM phones have 64 MB internal memory and mid range Asha 200, 201 have only 10 MB.

I appreciate the 110 and 112 but why those Asha phones packed with low memory?

All these phones support SD cards. You are supposed to get one if you are going to need more memory. The alternative is to make the phone more expensive and less flexible.

Yes I know it but what about when you have only 10 MB of internal memory for the user storage and out of that 5-6 MB is full of preloaded apps and you can not delete or move them. It’s just horrible user experience. I have used all C2-02, 03, 06 and Asha 201, 200 etc phones and all sucks and runs very slow. Just read the user reviews and comments about the C2-02, 03 on the GSMArena or other popular mobile site. You will notice how ugly and buggy phone are those.

……I think I’m supposed  to see 305 and 311 announced, what happened?

  • Innocuous Hunter

I like the shape honestly. I am definitely considering to buy it

  • Jack Wang

Beautiful design, nice S40 (Bluetooth sync) upgrade to the Nokia 101.

But STUPID decision to save a few cents on the LED torch.

Nokia needs to differentiate itself with basic user tools like Li-ion powered LED flashlight. Probably killed by the incompetent cost management. That’s why it’s being butchered by Samsung in the low end.

People just see that it’s the same crappy featureset like Samsung, just better looks. Nokia losing market share because it thinks it knows what the user needs/doesn’t need.

    • dividebyzero

Some people may love the LED torch, but maybe they are not actively choosing Nokia instead of anything else when they go get their phones. It makes no sense to keep features that people may appreciate, but don’t actually _buy_. Better to stay alive than be defeated by Samsung and retain some sort of pride on extra features.

    • Anonymous

Whilst I’d personally value a torch on these devices (and may well get a 112 as a standby device myself anyway) we have to remember the target demographic, what appeals to them most, and above all: cost.

That’s why this device is stuffed full of Social Media, games and messaging goodness, etc., and dressed in funky colours.

Whilst adding a torch might seemingly add only a few cents/pennies to the BOM, it has to be designed in (and that’d cost more than the component price I’d guess) and this in turn may compromise other features. Additional ‘small’ costs are then magnified beyond the factory gate as intermediaries add their markup and Cost is King right now.

Far from being incompetent, it is decisions like these that actually demonstrate acute, considered specification of devices matched to the target market.

Above all else, if we take your argument to its extreme every Nokia would be a fully-specced, top-end device as there will always be some market sector that will be demanding this or that ‘missing’ feature.

You can’t keep ‘em all happy!

      • http://www.facebook.com/code565472 陳政文

They remove LED flashlight from all latest low to middle end phones, they are not “didn’t keep them all happy”, they “keep part of them constantly unhappy”, for me it’s like they say “please buy our lumia, it have light”, “please buy our lumia, it have AF camera”, “No? Then accept this, you deserve it.”

i am not happy to see Nokia not announce any of the Lumia or 3xx range, no updates on Pakistan’s version on Nokia Maps, no glimpse of developer support. And then Nokia Pakistan is saying me they put Pakistan on high regards by launching cheap phones in Pakistan as a first ever global event. Just to tell you the facts, NOKIA 610 CAN COMPETE WITH HTC AND SAMSUNG GALACY LINEUP IN LOW END, but you guys DONT HAVE A TIMELINE ON WHEN WOULD THIS BE LAUNCHED… by the time you guys think on this Pakistan won’t have a market left.. take this seriously and start thinking, Dont take dumb decisions for god sake

Developer page mentions that device has only 10 MB of internal user storage memory. While consumer page says that it has  “up to 64mb internal memory.”

    Something is wrong here.

I feel sorry for people in developing countries. Not only they have to endure famine and war, but their cell phone screen resolution is only  128 x 160. How much would a 320 x 240 screen have cost extra? Ten cents?

Nokias site shows the Spotify logo in the Apps group picture, does anyone know if Spotify will be available to use on the 112 model? Also I’ll miss the light too.

The Nokia site shows a ‘Spotify’ logo as one of the Apps that can be used with the 112, can anyone confirm this?
