How the Nokia 808 PureView conquered Everest

As the Nokia 808 PureView starts to roll out, leading climber Atte Miettinen shares experiences from the summit of Mount Everest

Published by Boc Ly on May 30, 2012

Mount Everest

For most people, climbing one of the world’s great mountains would be an achievement enough. But not for Finnish mountaineer Atte Miettinen, 36, who has set himself the daunting task of conquering seven of them.

Known as the Seven Summits challenge, he is attempting to climb the seven highest mountains on each of the seven continents. Fewer than 350 people have done it.

In May, Atte completed his sixth and the biggest mountain of them all: Mount Everest. Luckily for us, Atte also took a Nokia 808 PureView with him on the Everest expedition and took some great photos.

From his base in Dubai where he is resting before he embarks upon the final summit of Denali in Alaska in June, Atte spoke to me about his great endeavour and how it feels when you are standing on top of the world.

Why the Seven Summits challenge?

My first mountain was Kilimanjaro over 10 years ago. I was climbing mountains one at a time, graduating to more extreme ones each time and I started needing a goal.

I am a very goal-orientated person so I wanted something to strive towards and the Seven Summits seemed like a good way to go.

Is it a mental and spiritual challenge as well as a physical one?

Absolutely. Most people don’t realise that 10 weeks on Everest is not just climbing all the time. Physically it is very demanding but it is mentally demanding also and you have a lot of time to yourself.

When you are climbing it is difficult to breathe because there is not a lot of oxygen and hence you don’t talk a lot but you are in your own thoughts and I think you come back a much calmer person. You have a chance to process all kinds of things related to life.

Climbers up Everest

Have you ever felt like you couldn’t do it anymore?

I think on previous mountains yes but  part of the appeal of the Seven Summits challenge is that you discover that you are able to push yourself quite a bit.

Things that might seem amazingly difficult before you start, you realise that if you break them up into smaller milestones then you can achieve a lot of things and achieve very big challenges. I think that is part of the appeal of discovering the inner strength that you have.

How is the view from the top? Have you ever been disappointed when you’ve reached a summit?

I think you have to take every mountain individually. I’ve always had a feeling when I get to the top that, ‘I’m here’ and there is a satisfaction because you’ve reached your goal and at least in that moment you are not comparing it to the last one or the next one.

You enjoy the moment of conquering yourself and conquering the mountain and then after a while you start heading back down again.

How do you celebrate when you reach the top?

There have been mountains when you reach the summit at the same time as other people, and you hug them and high five them. On Everest I took my time getting to the top and once you get to the top you sit there and stare at the sunrise and admire it in your own head. But everyone is pretty tired so there is no jumping around.

Mt Everest

What about the Nokia 808 PureView? Do you enjoy taking photos on these expeditions?

I enjoy it a great deal. I carried a big DSLR as well but I had a big preference for the small and compact Nokia 808 PureView. It was much easier to carry around.

I was amazed at the quality of the pictures. It’s an excellent camera and I think the product will do very well when it gets launched.

It’ll be nice to look back at the pictures and remember the different things that happened on the trip and you appreciate things a lot more that way.

How will you go back to normal life again after you’ve finished this challenge? You have an MBA – will you return to the office?

The world is full of all kinds of challenges so I think it’s just a matter of picking something else to keep your mind occupied. I think that spending time on the mountains is great and challenging yourself is great but I am also eager to get some real work done.

I’m sure I can take a lot of experiences from the mountains and these expeditions and translate those into boardrooms or the office and utilize what I have learnt into practical work.

The Nokia 808 PureView has now started rolling out to markets, and will become available for sale in coming days and weeks.

I want a quick answer: will it be available worldwide??

    • epdm2be

probably not in the countries where Nokia tries to push the Lumia 900.

  • Dan Pearse

I wish Nokia would release the phone. I don’t feel like climbing Everest just to get one.

    • epdm2be

Perhaps you can try a nice hot vulcano then :-)
I’m sure this would be a great durability test for the device as well ;-)
Not to mention some awesome shots too…

  • http://www.omreddy.com/ Mahesh

when it will be available in India? its already may end and still no news of pure-view 808 availability in India… :(

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Yes – India is going to be one of the first countries where it will go on sale.

      • http://www.omreddy.com/ Mahesh

@iandelaney:disqus thanks for the reply … as promised today is the last day of may and still not announced 808 here in india.. can you tell me which month your gonna launch it in india? :)

ok thanks mate hope they will not delay again.. :)

    • jill dasani

      • http://www.omreddy.com/ Mahesh

@google-b22491d3d98cb373c519ab077fb6b0ae:disqus but they said they ll release 808 in may na.. ? then y the delay?

        • jill dasani

          Shipment issues is being cited.
Also may be something that’s also related to Final Firmware of the device .. being a camera centric device it should come out in a fully perfect form.
But a final version is now available on Navifirm so we will see 808 rather soon.

This is where a hardware camera button is handy.  Can’t be touching the screen to take a photo up there.

  • epdm2be

Funny how ALL those articles keep saying “The Nokia 808 PureView has now started rolling out to markets,” while in reality it nothing is rolled out at all.

    Stop deluding people!

It’s still in production/testphase/finalisation/whatever the reason for the delay. Putting such articles on here without a phone available to the real world will do more damage then good. Not to mention soon that iPhone 5 rumour mill starts and if that Samsung Galaxy S3 is in shops BEFORE the 808 then Nokia will definitly loose customers despite a great cameraphone.

Why not show us WHY the 808 is NOT in shops instead of a few selected happy few bragging on how wonderfull the device is. Tell us the problems (if any) and perhaps we might actually help you.

Andrew here from Nokia. I can assure you that the Nokia 808 PureView has started rolling out from Nokia’s manufacturing plants, but getting it transported into the market and onto the shelves takes a bit of time. We ask you please to just be patient for a little while longer.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WF5RDUGP22TCVJZLOWFIKFE3FQ Alin

Dear Andrew, OK, they might have started rolling out, but why is NOKIA so quiet about this???!!! When Lumia enters a market you organize public concerts and a lot of hype, why not the same for PureView???!!! Because Elop does not want it to succeed?  This behaviour makes Nokia customers to hate Microsoft – Nokia partnership and Lumia phones!!! (I’m one of them, owning a N9 and sure I’ll get my last Nokia phone, the 808 PV)

      • steelicon

        @facebook-523798707:disqus

Ok then. Release the Nokia 808 PureView RM-807 globally and in all markets.

Do not do a Nokia Store Exclusive launch, rather launch it to ALL RETAILERS.

What are you hiding? Does the RM-807 suck? Or does the Lumia range suck?

LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE what to buy.

Not this cockamamie selective market launch.

Do you really want to LOSE MORE REVENUES? Nokia cannot afford to botch this launch of RM-807.

WE ARE NOT BUYING MICRONOKIASOFT LUMIA.

Just to be clear with our position. Not now, not ever.

We would rather shift to Android than use WP7.5.

There. I hope it’s clear enough for Nokia.

    • epdm2be

“perhaps we might actually help you.”

… to put my money where my mouth is.

I run a small company and 4 times a year I submit a ‘info/newsletter’ to my customers. To make more people aware (especially since the majority of my clients aren’t the ones visiting sites like this) I decided to cover the 808 PureView amongs others.

If you folks at Nokia want to have a copy of this PDF-newsletter then let me know. I don’t garantee that this will lead to sales but at least a few more ppl will be aware of future Nokia technology outside the ‘regular’ channels (whom seen more interested in either boycotting Nokia’s Symbian products or speculating about Nokia’s demise). I’ll try to be as objective as possible. honestly :-)

Oh, I hope you’ve got some ppl at Nokia who can read Dutch because the document is written in dutch.

      • droopyar

Symbian is by far the best OS in the mobile scene actually, but Elop is paid by Microsoft.

  • http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hradayesh Nimavat

Did he use the phone without taking off his gloves? You can take photos without using the touch screen on Symbian Belle devices but you can’t fiddle with the settings. You also would not be able to use zoom without the touchscreen, but I heard that you can now use the volume buttons for zoom.

I am going to get my 808 in Hongkong as soon as it release, but I changed my mind due to the bad experience with Nokia Care.

I have left my C7 in Nokia Care for HALF MONTH, and no one from Nokia can confirm when will the repair complete. I am developing a local app for Belle using my C7 as a testbed, the repair delayed the app testing very much, but the only answer from Nokia Care is “wait”.

I believe 808 is an awesome device, but after sell service counts a lot. I may go for a HTC then

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Heidi Lemmetyinen

Sorry to hear you’ve had a bad experience with Nokia Care. I’ll get one of my Care colleagues to investigate what’s happening.

      • http://www.facebook.com/kapok Paul Lee

My C7 is back from Nokia Care after the long journey. Thanks Heidi :)

        • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Heidi Lemmetyinen

Glad to hear it was sorted!

  • steelicon

    Delayed again. :-/

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Heidi Lemmetyinen

All I know is that it has started shipping. But I don’t have any info on individual markets right now.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=624855599 Sibt Ul Hasnain Ashmal

when can you give us any details on individual markets? im intrested in Pakistan, it comes under MEA region as far as i know, and is just next to India, and China too where i guess the factories are, so could i expect it to reach me soon too? Please enlighten me on this kindly, thanks.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WF5RDUGP22TCVJZLOWFIKFE3FQ Alin

Guys, look at daily interest on gsmarena, it’s mindblowing, neck-to-neck with S3 (~120000 daily hits)!!! None of the Lumia phones managed to do that!!!! NOKIA WAKE UP!!!

  • steelicon

LOL maybe these geeks are hoping that they will match the SGS3′s 9 Million pre-order with their marketing stunt with Nokia 808 PureView RM-807. The whole Lumia series is a flop. Won’t happen.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=624855599 Sibt Ul Hasnain Ashmal

Do you care replying to others as well? i mean we all pay the same bucks for buying a Nokia device right? just that we are on your disposal and mercy we have been asking since days you guys are official you should be giving us info that we customers need, instead you people ignore, which leads me to think that this social relations team should be a bit more social towards everyone, including the ones who criticize, not just the once who are happy cause Nokia did something good to them, i dont mean to be rude here, all i want to know is that can ANYONE from your so called official Nokia blog team tell me the complete list of countries getting the 808? Is Pakistan included? Any Approximate timeframe when will it land here? and the Nokia press release states that the initial launch will be in “select markets” incl. Russia and India, can ANYONE Please tell me that what the rest of the countries in the select markets are? Pretty Please, i already feel im begging you guys from the admin, please have some respect and show equality to all the people here… We all love Nokia equally and we All pay the same amounts of our hard earned cash to buy devices.. Look at the people in Austrailia, wouldnt they want a PureView 808? or there isnt anything good to take photos of in that region?

    • Adam Duus-Boolsen

Relax… You’ll know soon enough whether it’ll be available in your country, just like the rest of us – well, we know it’ll be available (it’s on pre-order), but not when it’ll show up…
Sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint a time and place exactly, and experience tells the industry it’s better not to make a promise you can’t keep than facing the angry masses when the deadline slides or a country is bypassed.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=624855599 Sibt Ul Hasnain Ashmal

promises? they already broke the may launch promise in india and russia, and i just want to know what the countries in the term “select market” are… simple as that.
secondly, go to facebook, or mynokiablog and find the post where it shows Nokia has launched the 808 in Saudi Arabia mate, and its selling, not on preorder, that too for just 533US dollars…
and can u still give an answer why they arent releasing a device worldwide? i mean do i have to buy a lumia if nokia wants me to, dont i have my own free will, and i have to spend lots of bucks importing it from somewhere else…. rubbish marketing mate…. i love nokia, i have all the flagships from nokia, E7.N8,N9 and many more, but i dont love the way they release products, look at SGS3, announced in may launched in may, coz all development was done only mass production was left, Nokia on the other hand announces a device a quarter year ago, why announce when its under development… noone likes to wait a quarter of the year, its a long time in tech sector, new things are coming everyday people lost intrest so on and so forth mate, dont mean to bash you, but its the hard truth!!!

  • Adam Duus-Boolsen

Still, if it’s true (and it probably is – “weeks”), we’ll have our grubby hands on it sometime before July…! :)

  • dividebyzero

Cool. I only hope some day the 808 may have the chance of climbing the Bandeira or the Neblina peaks here in Brazil… Or is it true that the 808 is not very keen on the New Continent?

  • http://www.facebook.com/martin.eyles Martin Eyles

When will the Nokia 808 Pureview be released in the UK?

  • steelicon

*taps fingers on the table* Are we there yet? I have yet to see a _ SINGLE _ actual unit of Nokia 808 PureView RM-807 here. Are we there yet?

  • Stylinred

Where are the rest of the pictures? Atte Miettinen said all the photos are with Nokia who are going to release them in a video but nothing :/
