Maps and the importance of offline

Maps and the importance of offline

Since we first introduced navigation on our smartphones, we’ve been taking offline maps very seriously. That is why we have been using vector maps since 2006. For smartphones to become the ideal personal navigation device that never leaves your side, they have to work with preloaded maps and completely offline.

Offline user experience

Offline maps are at the core of our navigation offering (with Nokia Drive) and we have been developing the perfect know-how over the past six years. Offering offline maps is not only about giving the option to cache some data offline for later use, it’s a complete experience.

Maps are either preloaded on the smartphone to offer a great out-of-the-box experience or people are taken through an easy first-use process to make their favourite countries and regions available offline. This provides an easy way to manage your offline maps that you can always go back to, regardless of service provider coverage.

An offline experience is not only about street maps, it’s also about offline available points of interest (POIs) to enable offline search, it’s about navigation voices (over 70 of them, btw) available on-device and offline rerouting.

Offline toggled

Size does matter

And where do offline maps actually go? They are locally saved on your device, the memory usage of which you are probably very protective, and rightly so. That’s why we are giving you complete flexibility and not limiting you to a 10 square mile radius. You can download an entire country (e.g. USA for 1.8 GB, China for 862 Mb, UK for 203 MB) or specific regions (e.g. California for 147 MB, England for 166 MB, Beijing for 63 MB): just like having a shopping list.

Numbers don’t lie

So now you have all these shiny maps stored offline and you are ready to go. What will you do with them? Most probably you are going to put your smartphone in your car and start navigating. In your home city, in your country or abroad for vacation. It would be a shame to travel somewhere and discover you couldn’t do much with the offline maps because no navigation instructions were available. This is why our voice guided turn-by-turn navigation is not only available for 1, 2 or 29 countries; it is available for over 110 countries.

For whom?

But the question remains, who can actually take advantage of offline maps? Nokia Drive with a full offline experience is available for Nokia Lumia, Nokia N9 and Nokia Belle smartphones. Even the Nokia N95, introduced in 2007 has offline navigation. And if you think offline maps are only a feature for premium smartphones, think again.

Many of our Asha phones also come with preloaded maps and preloaded POIs to make sure location-based services are affordable for people in emerging countries. We also haven’t forgotten about those out there using iOS and Android devices: they can visit maps.nokia.com from their mobile browser and discover they could have had cached maps available offline since last year.

Just dropped my uncle to La Guardia airport using offline navigation. I searched offline, and it instantly found the different terminals of La Guardia. Not one bit of internet data was used to travel back and forth. Thank You for this service especially when it is free. By the way I have a Nokia E7-00.

That’s great Muhammad, that’s exactly how offline maps should work.

Well, I drove through New Orleans for the first time with offline navigation. For anyone that drives through that city, the streets are so confusing! But thanks to this system, I had almost no problem.

  • Francois Magny

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were a blast in offline mode on my N8! Love Nokia Maps.

I remember having maps on my N91 (older than the N95), but this needed an external bluetooth GPS receiver to do navigation. It was great to have this all built-in on the N96. Even better now, since I’ve had an N8, it’s all free!

The best thing about this is that, no matter how much travel you do, you will never need to buy a standalone sat-nav again!

Another place where offline maps are useful is for walking. The Viewranger app does this wonderfully, with proper offline Ordnance Survey maps on Symbian devices. It’s not available on Windows Phone 7 though (only Symbain, iOS & Android at the moment – unless Conversations know something I don’t), so for now the only OS which gives me the best offline driving and walking is Symbian.

    • Federico

      True!
if nokia is so committed to navigation how come they haven’t yet managed to port the symbian experience to Lumia?

Also, after the acquisition of Navteq, have they expanded their coverage? NO!
still no Japan in nokia maps!

      • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

        Ciao @mrlovat:disqus,
As I explained several times here, for instance at http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/08/09/a-day-in-london-with-nokia-location-based-apps/, we have been developing for Windows Phone roughly for one year, whilst more than six on Symbian. Yet, we have managed to update 3 apps 3 times each in just 9 months and introduce 2 more in beta. Not to mention what we are doing with our location platform, now open to the whole Windows Phone 8 ecosystem.
And of course if you are a Japan-lover (just like me, actually) or if you travel often there, it’s frustrating to not have quality maps provided by Nokia. Nevertheless the coverage has increased dramatically in the last 6 years, basically doubling the number of navigable countries.

I just did a trip to Italy with the Lumia 800 and it was invaluable.  However, I will be much happier when we can have offline maps for “Maps” and not just “Drive”.
The problem was I needed to get a data plan there to get the maps into the app where I could sync my faves (maps).  I had the maps downloaded for drive which was ok, but then no faves.
To me it seems a step back given a year ago I was able to use offline maps w. GPS AND sync my faves that I put in prior to the trip using the E7.
I’m sure its just a matter of time and we’ll have that again, and then I can’t think of another map offering that will allow me to do all the input of waypoints on Pc and easily have them appear where I need them to navigate on the mobile.  I cant believe google does not have that still.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Indeed, we are working on extending offline functionality from Nokia Drive to Nokia Maps too

  • Taupo

On a side note, Nokia needs to bring its “after sales service” quality to Navteq to stay competitive. Here is an anecdotal example. A couple of years ago, I spotted a mistake in Google and Navteq maps. I provided feedback to both after the standard log-in etc. I received an acknowledgement auto-email immediately from Google with another email, personally addressed to me this time, within 72 hrs informing me that change suggested by me was accepted. Nothing so far from Navteq and the error is still there on Bing and Nokia maps. Secondly, adding local information to Google maps is much more user-friendly than Navteq/Nokia.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Thanks for this @Taupo:disqus, we are indeed improving this process too.

  • droopyar

Yes, i use my Garmin XT on my nokia 5800 phone and also nokia maps in symbian.

  • Daniel C

Is it possible for the app to turn down the volume of music playback on the phone when voice navigation commands are given?

I had the phone plugged into my car radio and couldn’t hear the nav voice over my music. Maybe not a complete fade-out like when phone calls come in but a significant drop in volume would be helpful!

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @google-82fdf2e288ac9a9e8e6612cf7bd87f4c:disqus, I remember answering this question on another thread, but I’m not sure it was you asking it…
This is a good suggestion anyway and I will bring it back to the team.

      • http://twitter.com/hopeenen Jukka Sariola

Hi @twitter-259199764:disqus and @Lhoylhoy:disqus you can read here http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/09/06/nokia-maps-for-windows-phone-8-goes-offline/ why it wasn’t technically possible on Windows Phone 7 to implement offline maps in Nokia Maps too.

          • http://www.facebook.com/juha.alaluusua Juha Alaluusua

            Hmmm…
            1. In WP7 applications cannot communicate with each other
            2. In WP7 Drive can have offline maps

Then how come it is not possible for maps to have offline maps? Since applications cannot communicate with each other Maps cannot possibly know that Drive already has offline maps. Obviously this would lead to 2 copies of offline maps, but would anyway be possible. Please explain the issue better if there is still something else preventing the offline maps.

        we’re waiting…

Nokia needs to immediately restructure its marketing department because at present they’re not doing a very good job.

A word of advice to Nokia executives that might be reading this –

Marketing should be a pro-active exercise, not a reactive one, so PR stunts like the one above are useless if they don’t reach the broader market. What Nokia really should do is embark on a world-wide advertising campaign (predominantly through TV) to promote these strengths, because as it stands, they’re not reaching the eyes/ears of potential customers. In technical language, this is called a “marketing pull campaign” and it works wonders for creating awareness.

    • Harry Kek

Yes, Nokia’s add on value to Windows Phone is fantastic BUT most people do not even know and compare to other phones which don’t do a good job.  I am using Lumia 800 and a Samsung Android at the same time.  I know which phone gives me a better phone calling experience; and which have more practical uses.

    • chintannapster

Nokia really should increase Advertisement and also make marketing very very good. Samsung doing really nice job in this and you can see the result.

Nokia has nearly stop the advertising on TV and on internet and that is the one reason of down selling.

    • Darafx

      I completely agree.
I already saw this “movie” before. When Apple launched iPhone, Nokia started to boast how big, good and untouchable it was, instead of doing something effectively to fight against the threat. One year later, Google launched the Android and Nokia again started to boast how complete and perfect was the Symbian OS. After 5 year, we are working on Carla. Yes, we have the best navigation SW yet but it is really important to focus on converting it from a strength to an real advantage, and believe me, it is not done only with boasts. In fact, Nokia completely forgot how to compete. It is normal when we spend so many time with no real competitors. Now that Google and Apple are focusing on off line maps, we will see people talking on streets about how “innovative” and “novel” are those new competitor’s services. In the end, it is not about only having a good product, it is about the business you can make with it. Nokia needs to avoid losing the “8 Billions Euros” (aka Navteq) advantage. Nokia needs to motivate people starting to use POIs and giving and getting real value from it. We are talking about doing business with Maps for at least 3 year and Nokia will wait Apple and Google to show how to do it?

Is it possible for the app  for using voice command in background ? Its very annoying, when u ride in new place, and smebody call u right before turn on the corner.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Indeed during a call you are not able to listen to turn-by-turn navigation anymore. We are working on a solution but in the meantime please reject the call if the maneuver is very important: it will also reduce the distraction.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ken.wallace.37 Ken Wallace

This application really needs an Avoidance option.  For example, the quickest way from Point A to Point B  is to use a toll road, ferry, freeway, but the driver may not want to use one of those routes

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-1228973028:disqus, this is a feature we introduced a while ago on Symbian so expect us to port it to Nokia Lumia asap.

  • WilkinLee

I am looking forward to the updated Nokia Drive where we can select routes to avoid toll roads etc as I think this is where it is still lacking functionality over my 6 year old TomTom one.

My question is what are we going to do in defending the turn by turn navigation space from Apple now they are using Tomtom over google maps?

At the moment Iphone users pay $50 for the app. Going forward it could be preloaded.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @WilkinLee:disqus, we have only recently started developing for Windows Phone so not all the features we had on Symbian (e.g. to avoid toll roads) are already implemented. But we are working on it.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Александр-Мартыньш/781139904 Александр Мартыньш

the main question is not when, its – will u make that some times or not :)

          • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

With the specific regard of house numbering in Nokia Drive, I have to ask what you exactly mean by that.
You can already enter a full address in Nokia Drive (incl. house numbers).

          • http://www.facebook.com/alexander.zinchenko Alexander Zinchenko

He means – to show building footprints in Nokia Drive with numbers. Not so important feature, I think, but some people wants it.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Александр-Мартыньш/781139904 Александр Мартыньш

Yep,its like a Alexander Zinchenko sad. Why cant u show us building footprint? I understanding why u dont do that, but its a little bit uncomfortable, when im trying to find house, and in the process of finding, i cant understand, does ND find this address or not (not the street, but the street with house number). In many cases i need to find address in Nokia maps (yandex maps) and only then, after i saw location of the houses on the street, i can use ND and be sure, that it will bring me to the right place.

I have just purchased the Nokia Lumia 900 with great disappointment. I can not use the Nokia Drive. For hours and hours the entire cellphone shop tried to assist me in getting it to work. You can not select a place on the map and say “Drive to” or “Walk to”. Eventually the staff from Nokia were so embarrassed that they recommended that I stay with my Symbian Nokia N8. Even the mpa colours are worse. This is a massive step backwards. The only reason I purchased the Nokia was for the offline map capabilities. What a disappointment. Nokia you have just lost another customer. All the drivers at the business get issued these phones for navigation. I have just cancelled an order for 37 of these Nokia phones. WHAT HAPPENED TO NOKIA SYMBIAN QUALITY MAPS?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @yahoo-2UQWO4UUQWW4FA2W4LAQUDVRYM:disqus , I totally get your point.
Nokia Drive for Nokia Lumia has been under development for less than one year while the corresponding app for Symbian is as mature as 6 years of development.
This means that right now we are prioritizing some features over others. Selecting a place on a map to drive to didn’t make the cut for the first 2 releases. You can of course always search for an address or place name.
Is there a particular reason why you need to tap a place on a maps over selecting its address? This will help us prioritizing this for the next releases.
Plus, please remember that Nokia Drive *does* have offline navigation even on Nokia Lumia.

At the same time we are also developing features that we have never had before, like the upcoming My Commute which learns your commute behavior and tells you how long you need every day to go to work based on accurate traffic conditions.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/2UQWO4UUQWW4FA2W4LAQUDVRYM Jason

         Hi Pino,

Thanks for replying to me. Here in Germany who do not expect these features to be missing. Often our drivers go to areas that do not have proper addresses. So we simply plan the trips for all the drivers and then zoom in to the street on the map and save the location into favorites. This feature is not a nice to have … we have to have it. Our other delivery guys often take the train into cities here in Europe and then use the Pedestrian function to “Walk to” to APPROXIMATE location. I gave the Lumia 900 to our driver yesterday to test. When he got back from the days delivery he said that I can keep the phone and he will stay with the N8. His words translated “… where is the Drive to function … they force me to input an address and it does not work for all the locations.” I gave the phone to the security guy at the door this morning and said to him that he could have the Lumia. Pino … I can not believe that the dropper function is missing to allow for “Drive to” or “Walk to”. I cancelled the order for 37 Lumia phones for Vietnam. ENABLE THE “Drive to” and “Walk to” function. Stop adding features that are not priorities and concentrate on what the people need !!! By co-incidence I see in this same conversation area that other people are complaining about the maps have this dull unclear look now. I spoke to our branch manager in Vietnam and China and he said they only use the Drive to and Walk to function. I will have a teleco. with them and make sure that they do not get the Nokia Lumia phones until the Drive to and Walk to dropper functions are fixed. Please do something like copy over the Symbian map functionality as is to the Lumia platform. PLEASE THIS IS SERIOUS AND I CAN SEE THAT OUR DRIVERS AND SALES REPS CAN NOT USE YOUR NEW LUMIA. They will all stay on the N8 phone. We have 872 N8 phones with our company and I make the decision as to what phone the company moves to because we have a small R&D simulation dep. here in Berlin. What works here cost effectively gets adopted with our branches worldwide.  Please do something as I am nervous about Nokia’s future.

        • http://twitter.com/jirigajda Jiri Gajda

Thank you very much for this response. You are definitely right that no one is interested in My Commute. I think users want to have the features of Symbian Maps, e.g. “Walk to”, offline Maps, etc. etc. I am also very disappointed with the Lumia location features. I still believe to my Nokia C5-00 but as soon as it stops working, I will be forced to buy an Android phone. Unfortunately, I will be forced by Nokia to do so.

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @yahoo-2UQWO4UUQWW4FA2W4LAQUDVRYM:disqus, thank you very much for taking the time to explain your situation.
I wish I could tell you that Nokia Drive on Nokia Lumia has the same feature set that its Symbian counterpart, but I admit that this is not the case. I explained in my previous comment why.
Now, coincidentally I live in Berlin too and I wouldn’t mind meeting you for a quick chat: I will be gladly report all your suggestions to the development team.

Hi there Pino, before i had this lumia 800, i had n97, i was able to input coordinate to navigate to places not available on the downloaded maps, i was wondering if this feature will be on nokia drive as well, because i live in a country with bad street names, and i find coordinate input very beneficial, so far i only find this in garmin GPS devices… would really appreciate if you could update me on this, thanks

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Fair feedback @twitter-106813201:disqus. This feature is not available in the current Nokia Drive for Nokia Lumia but we might consider it for future releases, many people have express their interest for it.

  • Douglas

Nokia, you really need to get rid of this separation between Drive and Maps. It’s killed the ease of use of maps rather than improve it. Secondly, this seems to only work for DRIVE, and NOT Maps. What’s up with that?? This is what I’m talking about with this separation of the two being more of a problem than anything.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @LessThanDoug:disqus, this separation between Nokia Drive and Nokia Maps is here to stay. But let me explain a bit why and provide you with more context.
We moved away from a monolithic app approach, we think that you shouldn’t browse through a jungle of menus and options just to… drive home. That should be as easy as tapping on your start screen.
But of course, at the moment, those two apps aren’t talking to each other enough and they don’t share the same maps data. But this is in the process to be fixed. In only one year of development we couldn’t port all the features from Symbian to Windows Phone.

      • http://twitter.com/hopeenen Jukka Sariola

Is this map integration between drive and maps still coming to wp7 or were you giving false information half year ago?

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-259199764:disqus sadly, Windows Phone 7 couldn’t support this kind of integration, which is why we have worked closely with Microsoft to make this happen on Windows Phone 8.

    “10 square mile radius”
Radius is a length, it isn’t measured in square miles.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Technically true, but in this case “radius” is being used as metonymy for “area”.

  • mancae90

When you introduced POI and manual target choice?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @mancae90:disqus, I’m not sure I understand your question.
Manual target choice sounds like “selecting a destination by long tapping anywhere on the map”. This is available on Nokia Maps but not yet on Nokia Drive.

      • mancae90

        Sorry for my bad english.
I wanted to ask if the next version will be added POI (Point Of Interest) as hotels, shops, hospitals and similar.

And also if will be added the target choice. I know that this is avaiable on Nokia Maps but would be more useful on Nokia Drive for ”turn by turn” navigation.
For example if i don’t know address but I know position on map, i check this position and drive to it with voice navigation.

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @mancae90:disqus you should be able to search for POI also in Nokia Drive. Just type “hotel” or similar words in the search bar.

          • mancae90

And for ”turn by turn” navigation? This option is the most requested by users, this is a serious lack of the app.

          • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Mmm, but Nokia Drive does offer turn by turn navigation…

          • mancae90

Yes, Nokia Drive offer that but doesn’t offer turn by turn navigation from a specific target select manually (as in Nokia Maps).

          • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Then you should refer to my first answer: not yet ;-)

          • mancae90

            ”Not yet”
It means that with the next version of the app that will be possible?

          • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

We usually do not disclose our products roadmaps. “Not yet” means it is under our radar and it will added in one of the future releases.

We hope in the next =)

it would be nice to be able to search by GPS coordinates to link between google earth’s easy search and Nokia excellent navigation. or just to breach the gap between platforms

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Good idea @facebook-757079201:disqus, we will consider it for future releases.

  • Daniel Mihailescu

Hello, it will be an phone with A-GPS in Asha series ?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @google-be17bf37d897d26687536bf986743635:disqus, we do not speculate on future phone models. At the moment we are very proud to bring a location-based experience also to very low price-points like with the Asha series.

      • Daniel Mihailescu

I am an Symbian Belle user and an 10 years Nokia user. I don’t consider Lumia, at least at this moment,  an upgrade to Belle. I was hoping to find in Asha at least a part of what was once Nokia.

The GPS apps that I use on Belle, are already available for Android, not for Windows, so I won’t miss them…

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-100002456961595:disqus, I feel your frustration and be sure that we are doing our best to extend our maps coverage to Pakistan too. But we do not speculate on the timeframe when this is going to happen. Just follow this blog to be up-to-date.

Are there any maps for Zimbabwe, and if there are how do I get them? My C5 has maps for neighbouring South Africa, Botswana and Namiba, but only shows some main roads for Zimbabwe.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-679088981:disqus, yes we do have street maps in Zimbabwe. On Nokia Drive for Nokia C5 you can also check whether there are updates available: we are of course committed to expand or improve our coverage.

Hi @google-664b43a49322ca0b7f40f4ad8c11ab73:disqus that’s odd and it’s quite difficult to understand from here what’s going on.
Try using A-GPS to get a faster GPS fix.

      • Akash Deep Satpathi

Thanks it only works in ONLINE Mode.

Help! I have just bought a Nokia Lumia 610 on the recommendation of an EE store assistant with the express intention of using Ordnance Survey maps on it: but it can’t be done. Can it?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-806429888:disqus I’m not aware of any app for WP7 with Ordnance Survey maps

Still nothing new about offline pedestrian navigation for Lumia 710? My patience with Nokia is soon over.
