Nine reasons to get a Nokia Lumia 610 (and perhaps one drawback)

Published by Dinesh Subramaniam on June 7, 2012

Nokia Lumia 610

The Nokia Lumia 610 has been at the centre of a heated discussion these last few weeks – resulting in both positive and negative stories and comments – thanks largely (or no thanks) to the fact that certain apps like Skype and Angry Birds won’t work on it.

The plain and simple truth is this: the Lumia 610 is our most affordable Windows Phone device, bringing the power of the platform to a wide-ranging audience – students, corporate users, soccer mums, tiger mums, and everyone else in between – and to regions where the cost of other models is prohibitive.

But what are you getting when you buy a Lumia 610? In many cases, a better deal than what you can get on other platforms. And let’s also be completely transparent about what you’re not getting.

1.     Fast access to all your information. The signature Live Tiles mean you can see all your notifications, launch apps and surface the information that’s relevant to you really quickly.

2.     Full email support. From Exchange Server, to Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail to a humble local ISP mail account, they’re all fully integrated into the Nokia Lumia and offer the best email experience on a mobile phone.

3.     Social from the start. Plug in your social networking details to have status updates, picture uploads and friends’ details right across the built-in apps on the phone.

4.     Unique location services. Nokia Lumia smartphones come with state-of-the-art Maps, Drive for turn-by-turn, voice-guided navigation, and now Public Transport planning available for free.

5.     Nokia entertainment services. Also free: turn your phone into a book with Nokia Reading or stream millions of music tracks from Nokia Mix Radio – which even works offline.

6.     Gorgeous design. The Lumia 610 is a fine looking piece of kit, available in four different colours, and with traditional Nokia build quality.

7.     Good camera – this is a 5-megapixel, autofocus camera, with a large f2.2 aperture and an LED flash for superior performance in lower light. Turn your photos into works of art with the Nokia-exclusive Creative Studio software.

8.     Office connectivity. Getting work done on a Lumia goes way beyond email. Read, write and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations with the Office suite and use SharePoint or SkyDrive for sharing and storage. And if you run a small to mid-sized business, Office 365 gives you secure email and everything you’ll need to that run that business.

9.     More than 80,000 apps from the Windows Phone Marketplace to expand and adapt your Nokia Lumia in almost every direction.

10. What’s the catch? If we’re selling this phone for around a third of the price of Nokia Lumia 900, then there must be something missing, right?

Nokia Lumia 610

The main functional difference is the amount of RAM. (RAM is the ‘working memory’ of the phone, as opposed to the ‘storage memory’ where it keeps your documents, pictures, music and apps). The Nokia Lumia 610 comes with 256MB of RAM rather than the 512MB found on the rest of the family.

What’s the impact of that? Well, when it comes to the regular operation of the phone and all the features we’ve mentioned, none whatsoever.

It’s fast and functional, just like the other Lumias in the family. But more affordable.

However, the lower RAM means that some third-party apps can’t be used. These are a tiny minority – less than five per cent of the contents of the Marketplace. They include the beta version of Skype available for other phones and a number of the most memory-hungry games, including Angry Birds.

That’s about it. Your choice depends on your needs and your budget, as always.

If having Angry Birds and Skype is a make-or-break factor in your phone choice, then the Lumia 610 isn’t for you. The next most affordable model is the Nokia Lumia 710, which has the regular 512MB of RAM.

Otherwise, if you want a great, good-looking smartphone with a whole host of unique, valuable features, the Nokia Lumia 610 is a steal for the price.

Where do the newly debuted Asha models fit into? They can do Angry Birds too! Not sure about Skype though.

    • OSagnostic

The Asha series do not have GPS.

  • http://aegisdesign.co.uk Shaun Murray

With the 710 under 100 quid in the UK now, how much is the 610? Is there a point in penny pinching?

    • TechnoB

if your on about the deal running at CPW that finished its now back at £130
although offer is marketed as an operator Pay&go device you actually get a sim free model with network sim chucked in.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NQJ2ZBGULJZA55XOLMX6BSI7EU Marcus

As an engineer, I can see why Skype could have a bit of a problem, since doing full-duplex voice in both directions without glitches may require quite a bit of memory to buffer and process data.

On the other hand, Angry Birds seems like an unlikely candidate for having bigger RAM requirements than, say, a full-blown web browser or Office suite – apart from being addictive, it is still a relatively straightforward physics-based 2D game as far as I can see…

I hope this is not an indication that running 3rd party apps in the XNA/Silverlight virtual machine puts a too heavy tax on resources of a low-end phone, and that scaling down the hardware requirements of WP7 is harder than originally thought.

Or could we end up in a situation where the low end Lumia phones are able to run the (presumably native?) built-in apps fine, but get pushed to their limits by modestly complex add-on apps?

    • Lovrena

Skype wokrs  fine on Symbian devices with 64 MB RAM and far less capable CPU (eg Nokia 5800, etc).  I see no reason why it should be more demanding on Windows Phone. It’s simply an inefficient implementation…

  • http://vikas-patidar.myopenid.com/ Vikas Patidar

If it has just 3.2 MP camera and 256+128 MB of RAM then it wold be great deal.

  • http://twitter.com/AnUtterTwonk Peter

I think Nokia made a big mistake not giving this device 512mb. Such a tiny increase on manufacturing costs and critical impact on usability.

    • MisterCats

Yeah, especially when you won’t notice an ounce of difference in anything you do with this phone. Yep.

    • OSagnostic

From what I have read it also has a lower power CPU (Cortex A5 @800MHz:disqus ) and lower power GPU (Adreno 200).
On the positive side this should mean better battery life.

  • droopyar

I use skype , angry birds and all applications perfect in my Symbian 5800 phone. So, why you buy the new Symbian Belle 808 PureView instead of this obsolete Lumia.

  • http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hradayesh Nimavat

Looking at competitors at same price range, none of them provide as smooth experience as Lumia 610(expected at price 11k INR) but on other hand Nokia’s own Symbian 603(price about 12K INR) supports all apps/games as latest Nokia 808 pureview so yeah Nokia did miss boat with pricing but I am more surprised that if Nokia put Angry Birds in Asha devices then why not have a deal with Rovio to pre-load Angry Birds lite version in Lumia 610!

    • http://twitter.com/dineshatnokia Dinesh Subramaniam

Hi Hradayesh, Rovio has said that they are working on a
version of Angry Birds that’s optimised for the Lumia 610.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/L6MUWTKNSYULP3W23O4UPG6WLY Suresh

    1. no keyboard. so being able to edit office documents is a most laughable comedy.

    2. no keyboard. so being able to do emails is another most laughable joke.

    3. live tiles:

MY MY MY. WHERE DO I START?

THEY ARE NOT ONLY UGLY, BUT THEY REFLECT THE DOUBLE STANDARDS OF NOKIA. Why would nokia make a big noise about energy saving, amoled and all that bleep, and force down the throats of users with brightly coloured power hungry UGLY tiles?

Mr. Kevin Shields compares these tiles to “dull icons doing nothing”, in his intro of lumia 800. WHAT DOUBLE STANDARDS?

NOKIA INVENTED ICONS THAT ARE USER FRIENDLY AND HAVE CAPTIVATED THE MARKET FOR A DECADE. but i guess everyone changes.

Let the whole perceived majority put their signatures on those live tiles and smoke it.

me and other few like me will continue to disklike it but happily smoke our pipes with “signature” E-series devices like E7 and BEFORE.

    • http://twitter.com/dineshatnokia Dinesh Subramaniam

Hi Suresh, it’s not difficult to gather that you’re a fan of
the physical keyboard. We respect the fact that different people have different
preferences when it comes to input methods. However, the Lumia smartphones are
no different to most other touchscreen smartphones from Nokia and other
manufacturers in that they do not have physical keyboards. Do give it a try and
you’ll see that the Lumia smartphones are easy to type with. Predictive texting
and suggestions for misspelt words make it easy for anyone to work on office
      documents, emails and text messages.

The Metro UI and tiles have been received very well by people using Lumia and
other Windows Phone smartphones, and they give quick access to information. Do
give it a try if you haven’t yet.

This is the result of the Nokia – Microsoft deal, a crappy OS running on a crappy “smart” phone that can’t even run angry birds.

    Please make it stop!

Ditch that horrible and resource eating Windows Phone OS and give us something different.

    • Jimmy_Jangle

       Resource eating?? Are you mental?

    • http://twitter.com/dineshatnokia Dinesh Subramaniam

Hi Roy, there’s nothing wrong with the OS, and there’s nothing wrong with the Lumia 610 either. A conscious decision was made to develop a smartphone with a lower RAM, which enables it to be sold at previously unseen price points.

For many people, a smartphone must do more than simply play Angry Birds (which, as Rovio themselves mentioned, could make its way back to the Lumia 610 soon). At this price, you’ll be hard pressed to find another smartphone that has free turn-by-turn navigation for over 100 countries, Office Mobile, a great reading app, free music with a catalogue of over 16 million tracks to choose from, a 5-MP camera, and so much more.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/ZUBU5INCM2KU56RBDUN767E4IM Vatsal

It means the only thing that matters in ur life is angry birds ???? Wake up .. dude. Nokia is the best. BTW use both (Android and Windows) and then decide which is resource eating OS.

Really good story.  I’m surprised a story like this is actually coming from Nokia itself.  Usually companies talk only about the good about their products not the drawbacks.  Lumia 610 is a great device for it’s target market.

it has more disadvantage and less advantage….

get a 710 instead in UK brand new PRICED less than 610 currently, zero drawbacks b/c it as the same internals as the L800

  • http://twitter.com/bennx Ben

I’ve been waiting to buy this phone. But Nokia keeps delaying the release. I can’t wait anymore.. I’m buying a Sony Ericsson. Wake up Nokia..

  • Gandangatororo

You know what people want? Sad – some people consider your phones to be bricks or dinosaurs. Then there is the problem of talking about a gadget 12 months before its release date.

Guess what, better gadgets from other organisation would be on the market. A still waiting for the 808?

  • http://www.profiletree.com/ ProfileTree

I Loved the phone especially the colors of the phone Amazing

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=705733838 Fabian Davy

The RAM issue is overblown. I have the phone and I loved it. Fast & fluid. Facebook integration is astonishing – snychronising contacts and events with the Calendar App. Good battery life when battery saver is turned on – impressive for a smart phone.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/L6MUWTKNSYULP3W23O4UPG6WLY Suresh

    Hi Dinesh,

Thank you for a tempered response.

However, i hope you understand that a customer has the right to shout and the company (Nokia) has the duty to listen.

Apart from tiles, what does it do better than Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional that i have on my Xperia X1 & Omnia Pro B7610? Or my E-series devices?

I agree that the mangoes and tiles do offer a very transformed UI experience, people do have different preferences, thank you for respecting that, but just why do you force Lumia on my throat?

Can you answer the following questions please?
    1. Whenever i enter a retailer, i see a stack of Lumias amidst huge banners, and the retailers take me to the androids section. Why?
    2. Whenever i enter a Nokia Priority Partner, with only Lumias decorating the walls and showcases, there is no staff that even looks at me or attends to me. They continue to fiddle with their own devices, or often, there is no people inside. Why?
    3. Agreed, Nokia’s present movement is away from Symbian, but E7 has no visibility. Why?
FYI, i have 3 E7s. For my fossil collection. We even have a group of E7 owners. But we are so ashamed of ourselves, that we are contented with our own darling devices and don’t make any publicity.

Shamefully, the market is moving away from “devices that work” to “toys that shine”. The unforgivable part is people like Nokia for Lumia are leading the show.

    My deepest feelings of sorrow.

    Hi Dinesh,
Absolutely authentic review. Loved it. And yeah, you’re right. The only real issue with the phone is that it can’t run a few apps. Big deal. It looks AMAZING and is sooo smooth. Totally recommended for a low budget + a nokia-lover wanting to try out a new OS.

  • Suyog Gore

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/MHHJXTKFU2TIINHQIFNIFE7JYM Shourya

hi there…..i had this question…..can nyone tell me how to find picture information captured on lumia 610?

  • wouter

i had a black berry it broke, so whent looking for a replacment. bud no black berry that get to my needs. so i went looking for something els. they all started with sony, samsung, htc,.. all android. i asked if they hadden’t something els. all my friend have one of those. so they said. nokia lumia 610. so i tried the test model in the store and was impressed by the smoothenes. yes you don’t have skype or fucking angry birds. bud i’m 27. why do i want angry birds anny way. and i pay my bill. so why call for free. you pay to call with your phone. also this phone, if you link your fb acount ot it, you can text and switch to fb chat in no time. so if you want to keep in contact internationaly. you mail and fbchat. so why skype. also the build in office is great. i can open pdf in a few seconds(app avaible), google doc’s and drive. agenda’s, google, windows live, fb, outlook. so no problem i can only be poss about it. becaus what ever i did with my bb this one is also doing it. even better for somethings. battery live is ok. its 2,5 days. not 5 like a old school cell. before you say what better than bb. for what i do with it yes. apps will follow. and the war between apple and android is going hard at this point i think windows and nokia will go around back to be on top in several years. don’t forget not everybody has a apple desktop or laptop. windows 8 on the new pc’s and laptops will have a good thing linking your phone. bud all in all i like the lumia 610. if you think its not up to do the job. pay more or get a android. bud i will say this. your loss. easy use of tiles, easy acces to pc. easy linking to zune and i love the idea of collor on a cellphone. maybe one thing nokia would add, sell the back covers sepperatly. so you can change your cover whenever you want. think about the nokia 3310, 5150,6310, 5110,… there is a market for this. everybody whants a personal phone. so get those covers for the 610,710 sepperate on the market and get the people to love this again. and what ever you think i don’t minded. thats my opinion. bud why buy something everyone else has. think differenly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tridib.dey1 Tridib Rambo Dey

how to turn of prediction text in lumia 610 it really sucks me

  • http://www.facebook.com/moazzemm Moazzem Hossain

Angry Bird!!!! is that all you care about people!!!??? I have iPhone 4S and I have angry bird, angry bird space. But I dont play it too much. Actually I dont play it at all. Bcoz I dont need it. I didnt even open this game for last few months. Your phone is your personal thing that you carry every where to college, job, party,on a date, or hangout with friends. Now tell me how many people use SkyPe when they are in college, on job, on a party, on a date with a beautiful girl???

Anyway, if angry bird or skype really matter to you or if your heart cant pump without skype or angrybird then go get yourself a PSP or game boy or other smartphone that can run those school boy things.

Nokia lumina 610 is awesome phone. I recommend it. and I am going to get one as my first windows phone.

  • SAURABH

  • Silvia

Sorry, I need an information. What about the data storage? Can Nokia Lumia 610 have an expandable memory?

  • Parimal Mishra

hi bro whats the funda of nokia music app? why after updation its not working ,i an having a nokia lumia 610……
help me please….. you can mail me at mishra.parimal09@gmail.com,i would be very much thankful to you for your help……

  • Annoyed

The sad thing is, if side loaded, the Nokia Lumia 610 CAN run angry birds, skype practically everything thrown at it.

I was even able to run Assassins Creed and other 3d games, sure the load time takes a few seconds longer, but it runs fine.

The problem is the Windows Market pace that has decided we are not allowed to run those apps on our phone.

I dev unlocked my phone a few days ago, and it can indeed run everything Windows Market Place says it “can not”.

So the issue is not with the phone, it is with Microsoft locking the Nokia Lumia 610 out for some unknown reason.
