All you wanted to know about Nokia location-based services

Published by Pino Bonetti on June 8, 2012

Location is one of Nokia’s core businesses. It’s one way Nokia will continue to make a difference to people as they move around in the real world. It’s an important Nokia contribution to the Windows Phone ecosystem: a series of apps and services exclusive to Nokia smartphones that truly differentiate. It’s the reason why Nokia is building the Where platform to create a digital, predictive model from all the places and objects in the physical world, including people’s activities.

We’ve told many stories about this business on Nokia Conversations. These include explaining Nokia’s commitment and vision behind several apps that run on Nokia Lumia, on your desktop browser at maps.nokia.com, and even on iOS and Android mobile browsers at m.maps.nokia.com.

As of today, it will be even easier for you to browse among those stories and follow those to come: just go to conversations.nokia.com/location, or click on the compass icon you find in the navigation bar on the left. It couldn’t be easier.

At conversations.nokia.com/location you’ll find our answers to your everyday needs and to unlock the opportunity for new adventures:

  • Being lost and needing to find the way
  • Travelling somewhere for the first time and needing to know the route
  • Knowing which bus to catch on a daily commute
  • Being able to avoid a traffic delay
  • Understanding the buildings around us
  • Making plans with friends and family for new adventures

Together with experts who are building our location-based apps and services, I’ll be writing on these pages and you can engage with us in the comment section. We’re looking forward to hearing from you!

Bring live traffic to Nokia Drive on the Lumia range and this will then make this a fantastic navigation tool.

Map data are continuously updated, so you just have to be a bit patient sometimes.

It would also be ideal if we users could report map errors or missing data (poi, road geo, addressing, etc) directly into Drive or Maps.

    NOKIA MAPS is so SAD!

I type in TOKYO, JAPAN and try to bring up a detailed map on one of the WORLD’S MOST POPULAR CITIES, and what do I see??

       Nada, zip, zero, ding…..

That’s right! I can’t travel to Tokyo and expect to use Nokia Maps because the level of detail is SO POOR, I could hand-draw a map of Tokyo that has more street detail!

On the other hand, zip on over to Bing Maps, Google Maps, Yahoo Maps, etc, etc. and I get highly detailed street level maps , satellite views, etc.

Thus, I don’t see how Nokia Maps is going to prevent me from getting lost in Tokyo, or help me find any street of note there. Not even talking about a 3rd world country here – one of the world’s top 10 ranked cities!

Hi @google-f844d6ac5f5c11d726fed976002ce23b:disqus, I feel your frustration. Unfortunately, because our map data for Japan is not good enough we do not offer navigation there as we do in other 110 countries.
But we are working on it.

    Two things I’m crying out for are;
1)Improved pedestrian routes in Maps – at least a compass mode that rotates the map as you turn so you can see which direction the shop etc is.
    2) An option to navigate to a POI from Maps using Drive. Integration between the two apps, and better Transport integration.

Hi @worldgoingmad:disqus, these are indeed highly requested features, which is why we are working on them right now. Stay tuned for more news!

Hi.I bought Lumia 710 a month ago and let me drop a few lines and share my experience with Nokia Maps and Drive.
In the beginning I have to admit, that these two applications are a huge disappontments. Why? I have always felt a sort of loyalty toward Nokia. However, Nokia is experiencing harsh times these days, I decided to buy Nokia. These days I am thinking of getting rid of my Lumia 710 and buying an Android phone as Google Maps and Navigation seem better.

    Why?

    Nokia Maps:
    * off-line mode is completely missing (You really think that somebody is going to use your Nokia Maps while abroad. Imagine the roaming data fees!)
    * pedestrian turn-by-turn voice navigation is completely missing (Why? This app is so great with Symbian!)
    * no possibility of synchronizing Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive (-forget me the pejorative vocabulary – but What an idiot decided to split this application into two separate ones?)

    Nokia Drive
    * navigation is not as accurate as it used to be with Symbian (Why doesn´t it display: Turn Left Towards Vienna/Gratz/A1, but only “Turn Left” or “Turn Left – Main Street, sometimes accompanied with the road number, but sometimes not, which can be very confusing for a driver)
    * Why cannot I choose an alternative route (e.g. the function available with Symbian through pressing the “5″ key)?
    * Why cannot I choose the fastest/shortest/optimum route or a toll-free route? (It was available with Symbian.)
    * Why cannot I set my home destination?
    * Why cannot I synchronize my favourites from Nokia Maps?

You always announce that there will be “an update” soon. But when?

When I was buying Lumia 710 I was convinced (based on some promotional documents) that Nokia Maps/Drive would be the same as with Symbian. I think Nokia should communicate these facts better and should not confuse their customers! Don´t you have any self-preservation instincts. As you have made much worse location-based applications, the flagships of Nokia, you are destroying and burying the company.
